I found an interesting documentary on water:

Not really much to do with this thread, but it's pretty neat anyways

General Discussion / bugger...tried some "conventional food" today
« on: February 15, 2012, 07:15:02 am »
Came out of the gym today, ate my daily 20oz ground beef + 10g cacao beans + 10g walnuts post workout snack, and then had the hardest craving for turkey pepperettes and whiskey.  (Pepperettes are mass produced cured meat sticks)  SO I thought OK I'll try some pepperettes.

My effin' head is pounding now.  Heartrate very high compared to what it usually is.  Holy headache.  Every beat of my heart is like a shockwave going through my head right now,  WTH!   I'm shaking and feel weak and am bloated.  Brutal.  It's already subsiding, I ate about 250g of the stuff.  What gets me is that people eat this stuff EVERY DAY!!! :-O

Ingredient list from the package:
-turkey, potassium lactate, salt, sugar, hydrolyzed corn protein, potassium choride, spices and spice extracts, onion powder, dextrose, lemon powder, sodium ascorbate, garlic powder, smoke flavor, sodium nitrite, smoke.

I feel like shit.  And typing out that ingredient list makes me feel even more like shit, like what the fuck was I thinking!  I threw the rest of them out...and I didn't give into the whiskey btw, lol.  I hope I haven't gone too far backwards now :(  But at least it's really hit home that raw paleo is the way to go.  I'm still blown away that I used to be able to eat this crap every day, and the general population continues to do so :O

Yeah, I'm wondering  about the same thing, Adora.  I got some wild venison from a friend at work, and then he told me "yeah, it tastes really great because practically all they eat is the corn from the corn-fields around here!"
...which I don't think is so great :-(

HAHA yup.  My extended family on my dad's side are all farmers and peg about $30k worth of soybeans and corn lost to wild animals every year.  I'm not sure what this is as a percentage of overall yield though...they have about a dozen farms  so I'd think this is on the smaller %%.  Still though, that percentage would be similar in any other farming area.

I don't have a problem eating wild game if it comes from up north, where there are no people and the animals are truly eating their natural diet :)  But around farmed areas...ughh ya just never know!

Thanks!!!

It's too bad we can't eat wild turkey!  Around here is so much farmland, one never knows what they've been eating...how many soybeans or corn laced with who knows what chemical concoction :(  Grain gets spilled in the fields too and they'll eat that as well.  I shoot a couple turkeys every year and give the meat to my neighbours who cook their food....same with my deer :(  So sad that if I want naturally fed wild game I have to go to a wild game farmer.

Hey, so I've been eating a pretty one sided diet lately, with the only meat source coming from beef. (raw of course)

Been doing a bit of reading on here and see that it's the opinion (by GCB and others) that variety is important, so I'm going to try some other meats.

I was thinking trying chicken, turkey, and duck.  I have access to "certified organic" birds, but unsure what that means exactly...I'll be asking the farmers what they feed their animals before I buy..so what sorts of things should birds be consuming so it's safe for us to eat?  Or what shouldn't they be consuming?

Thx

I am intrigued as to what sorts of food you often eat at work?

Ground beef, every day!

I eat at work for everyone to see.  Besides being amusement for ppl who don't know about my eating habits, it's no big deal, really.  They all tell me to be careful and blah blah about parasites and whatnot, then dig into their donuts or Pringles chips with a side of soda, haha

grass fed, corn finished ground beef over here....I buy the beef by the side and get it all ground up.  40-60oz/day, no issues here.  But I do know my farmer, butcher, and animal!  They say it's grass finished since corn is considered a grass, but nothing otherwise

Has anyone tried eating bones?  I don't mean the marrow, like actual bones....filing, crushing, or grinding down some bones, and sprinkling the result over your meal, or mixing it with some water and drinking it...or?

I couldn't find any info online about this....I'm unsure too if we humans could efficiently digest/process bones.  I was just thinking about this as a source of calcium/minerals.

Thoughts?

Hi Matt,

if you are afraid of parasites just buy prefrozen fish...

Löwenherz

Does prefrozen kill the worms too?

shellfish at least appear to have less parasites overall, I'm not too worried about eating those raw.

I didn't think about the manmade toxins angle, thanks for that!  After doing a bunch of reading online (re: parasites, worms, etc) I think I'll be staying away from any raw fish...

I like fish but have never eaten it raw.  Saw some at the grocery store today tho. (one I rarely go to)  There was Whiting (whole, not gutted) and Trout. (gutted)  Both the kinds of fish came from Lake Huron, and were labelled "fresh."  Of course the girl behind the counter had no idea how fresh exactly, but they hadn't been frozen.

Anyways, how do I know the source is safe?  Or how old it is? Is there some way to tell by looking at the fish?  Do I need to gut the Whiting before eating?  I did some reading about fish and there's a lot of scare tactics out there regarding parasites and whatnot....so I need some guidance plz :D

I DID buy some live oysters which tasted wonderful btw.  I still don't understand how TWO live ones can cost $3, when you can buy a can of 15 smoked/processed ones for $0.95 lol

There are also bicycle shorts which have added padding for added comfort.  You can also use a skin lubricant (athlete grade) like Bodyglide which makes things more comfortable....most people think that pain from a bicycle seat comes from pressure, but it's actually friction.  I've had no problems with any pain after starting to use the Bodyglide and I ride almost daily.

I have no idea if there are any studies comparing diseases assocatied with cycling...

I love my beef heart, but it's far too tough for me to eat raw.  I still slow cook it, which makes it tender and taste fine....but I wish it was raw.  I thought I might try grinding it up, or making it into a paste in the food processor...or??  Anyone have any other ideas?

General Discussion / how long is beef good for after thawing?
« on: August 25, 2011, 06:07:51 pm »
So my paranoia has set in slightly lol.

After I thaw beef from the freezer, and left in the fridge, how many days "should" it still be ok for to eat raw?  I've been letting it go max 24hrs, but timing things all the time can get complicated.

And what if left in a lunchbag for a few hrs at a mediocre cool temp...how long can I leave it before cooking might be needed?

Opinions welcome :)

I'm in southern small town ontario-Shelburne.  I was there in Whitehorse once just for work...literally just for a day.  If there was decent work for me up there I'd easily make the move!
