You can also make your own: http://www.evfit.com/pemmican.htm

This is the recipe that a few coworkers and I are looking at. In fact, that's how this the long trail of links that lead me got started. Sure, it is cooked (drying the meat and rendering the suet) but I think it is a definite 'lesser of two evils' thing here. Travelling with raw meat is damn near impossible but pemmican is wonderfully suited to travelling and beats fast food or roadside grill hands-down.

I am wondering what experiences you all have or if you have any tips or tricks for still being able to eat the standard American diet (or any other modern diet) after going raw paleo. I ask because I want to go raw paleo but I can't expect the rest of my unit, friends, family or business associates to do the same. I still need to be able to digest food at the Marine Corps Ball, down an MRE, eat at family functions and take clients/businessmen out to dinner.

Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated. :)

I find that list very, very suspect... For starters, the people who aim to get sub 2:30 times and win the race are not the vast majority of marathon runners who are out there to push themselves personally and have fun. I've run two marathons, the Big Sur International Marathon and the San Francisco Marathon, without soiling myself or feeling confused. I felt elated, actually, thanks to the nice endorphin kick and the charge in the air from a few thousand athletes. There was also a sense of exploration as I had never run those routes before and there was a lot to see.

I was, however, injured but have since learned the reason why. The vast majority of modern runners have terrible, terrible running form. And pretty much everyone has terrible walking form. That's because we've been wearing clunky Western shoes ever since we were little babies that robbed our body of the very thorough biofeedback system in our feet and eliminated much of our natural shock absorption. The soles of your feet are so sensitive so that they can tell you what kind of surface you are running on and prepare your body for every step you take, including adjusting for terrain issues. Our bodies need to feel the ground beneath them but because we bind our feet in so much padding they can't feel so we literally slam our foot onto the ground trying to make contact.

Then our shoes prevent natural running form. Rather than land on the balls of our feet and let our joints bend and absorb the shock we are taught to slam our heels into the ground and 'roll' forward to push off. Pounding your heel into the ground transfers all of that energy straight to your knee, which then absorbs the shock, and deteriorates it.

There's a few great websites and articles on the issue but if you really want to know the difference go for a walk without your shoes on. And not just on grass or sand. Your ancestors walked and ran barefoot on all sorts of unforgiving terrain just as rough and hard as asphalt and concrete and you should too. Just go for a walk and see if your usual walking form works for you. Try running a very short distance if you feel brave.

Your body will naturally adjust your walking and running form, as well as anything else you do, to eliminate injury and strengthen itself if you allow it to do so.

I would also like to say that Phidippides, the first marathon runner, didn't die from running 26.2 miles. He died froming running 140 miles to Sparta, then running back, participating in the march to Marathon and the grueling battle there, and then ran the 26.2 miles to Athens.

Health / Re: Post-Surgery and Scars

Ah. That is what I wanted to hear. The scars still go away under a rawpaleodiet. I thought it would but it's always nice to have it confirmed by someone who has had it happen and isn't making any money off me.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea runs in my family as my grandfather, uncle and probably my brother have it. Of course, no one in my family thought to tell their always-tired relative that there was a history of sleep disorders until the military diagnosed me. And the military didn't diagnose me until I fell asleep doing 70 on the freeway and offroaded my Corolla.

Anyways... Tried a bunch of different options and they didn't work. Finally, doc had me do a U-Triple-P (UvuloPalatatoPharyngoPlasty) to try and correct the anatomy. Basically, they went in and took out my uvula (the dangly bit in the back of the throat), my tonsils and part of my soft palette (separates your nose from your throat). Good news is I do feel a bit better. Bad news is I don't feel 100% and there are side effects: Difficulty swallowing at times, increased tendency to choke, fluids coming out my nose, fluids coming down my nose (mucus or salt water if a wave gives me a good tumble), this constant feeling of something in the back of my throat...

Long story short: I am hoping that a raw diet rich in raw meat will encourage cellular regeneration so that my throat doesn't scar too much and it will recover enough so that my soft palette starts doing its job again.

Also, any experience with healing scar tissue? AV claims his Primal Diet helps dissolve scar tissue which would be nice for my throat and other scar tissue interspersed throughout my body (shoulder, knees, chest...)

Just a bit about me...

I'm a 22 year-old male US Marine stationed in Hawaii, which is an extremely isolated and lacking state . There is one CSA and one co-op on my island and I plan on joining both. In fact, that is the greatest challenge I have with a raw diet: I'm not sure how I am going to get the food in the quality and quantity that I need without destroying my budget.

Anyways, I recently moved out of the barracks and acquired a couple of kittens. After doing a bit of research I decided to put them on a raw whole prey diet which they are absolutely loving and I, jokingly at first, told my friends that my kittens were eating better than I was. That comment, the reasoning behind why I was feeding them raw and a couple of avid cross fitters and paleo eaters at work all came together to make me do more research. Then I found AV's Primal Diet and reading that plus follow-on research led me here.

I'm going to raw to finally get the nutrients my underdeveloped body needs, finally reap the benefits of my exercise programs and address some chronic health problems. I'm hoping to undo the damage being in the military has done (surgery, vaccination cocktails, heavy medication, wear and tear) though the military has shocked me out of my rut on multiple occasions which is why I am here. I can't really complain. Still, I plan on getting out of the military and going into massage therapy having experienced first-hand the healing power of massage.

I just know that you need the proper diet too.

Anyways, it's a pleasure to be here and find more people with my particular kind of crazy.
