Health / Re: My 8 year old son has been diagnosed with tuberculosis
« on: August 11, 2009, 02:14:03 am »
I think plenty of rest, raw animal fat, moderate raw animal protein or even better organs like liver (or heart etc), and low/very low or even zero carbs. Plenty of mineral water (of course not excessive), and not much quantity-wise for meals as digestion takes a signicant ammount of energy, so moderate. Minimise stress, like computer games, tv, intensive exercise etc. Maximise de-stressors, a little reading, walks, things that are fun like gental family games. Plenty of fresh air, and a moderate ammount of sunshine and light exercise, or very light exercise (like walks). Plenty of sleep, but not excessive.

If one insists on spices/herbs for certain reasons (like stimulating immune system) I would personally suggest them in the absolute smallest quantities. The body if give the environment it has adapted to it will run optimally, and although I can appreciate certain responces can be achieve using various herb remedies - i think they may be simultaneously stressing the body in doing so.

I think there is also an importance of listenning to signals your body gives, while being armed with the knowledge you have learnt.

I wish him all the best goodsamaritan, I will be thinking of him, and your family.

Sincerely

David

If its a great source, and they are the kind of people I like, i definately tell them what I want, and what I plan. They know what you want, and so are better at giving it to you - win win.

General Discussion / Why is there amylase in saliva?
« on: August 04, 2009, 09:50:21 am »
I know amylase breaks down starch into simple sugars. What rawpaleo food contains starch?

I know the answer is perhaps a simple one, but google can be unhelpful if you cannot phrase the question correctly.

Thanks guys/gals!

Carnivorous / Zero Carb Approach / Re: Raw Liver?
« on: July 29, 2009, 08:53:34 am »
I felt amazing after eating great quality raw liver.

I would simply eat an amount thats relative to how much there is compared to an animal. Ok that sounds a bit limp, but lets say.... if I haven't eaten a decent meal for a few days, I kill a deer, there is only so much liver. I bare stuff like this in mind, it seems fairly simple. I would eat the organs/blood/goodies etc first, warm, then the calorie dense fat would be the mainstay. Everything else would be excess.

To me this seemed slightly slightly fairytaleish to me at first, but the more I eat meat and fat, and the more I think about animals, and getting my hands on a deer, it is slowly becoming less and less idealogy, and more reality. When truely hunger and listenning to your body, it all becomes clear....

I think even above the great health benefits of eating this way, I would have to say my absolute favourite thing is the new outlook I have on life. I feel slowly more and more grounded, and am becoming more able to see lifes simplisity. Maybe thats just part of 'heathiness'.

It is a definate possitive, upward spiral.

Oh but sorry, yeah liver was/is absolutely fantastic. I WISH i could get a fresh warm one :), but  quality grassfed/wild is still amazing -
a slow introduction I find works better with new foods, so start with a little. Then more.... Oh and I just cut it quite finely, after letting it get to room temp. Then really relish the stuff (i eat it with chop sticks, served with a cup of warm water with a little sea salt dissolved in) its sooo good.

Carnivorous / Zero Carb Approach / Re: My tooth
« on: July 29, 2009, 08:33:07 am »
I'm looking forward to Lex's bone tests, those should be interesting. I don't have any experience of such radical 'healing/remineralisation' but I had 2 tiny holes and 1 medium holes in teeth after eating loads of fruit during my vegan 6 month experiment. I found raw fats really helped, but also low carb. I no longer have any sensitivity, only when I experiment with a fair ammount of fruit/honey. I think the lower the carbs the better maybe. I also think that fat might have the added bonus of killing bacteria maybe in the mouth? This is guess work, but i briefly read about 'oil pulling' and the effects other oils/fats had (supposedily) on mouth bacteria.

Who knows the exact science, but by all accounts raw fat seems to be a great thing for teeth.

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Re: Randy Roach about bodybuilding
« on: July 29, 2009, 08:24:36 am »
Yeah i'd agree with that, theres such a difference between the look of Mega BB's now than back in the 'old days'. I do recall reading an article about a relatively successful and known BB of the past (maybe last 10-20years) who was known for eating large ammounts of raw meat. I remember it vividly because of a story about him eating raw steak on a park bench in some brown paper, accidently ripping the steak from the paper hiding it, and apparently getting a very funny look from the women with the raw steak hanging from his mouth! :)

I'll try and find the article if I have time, it was quite cool.

(just found the guys name, Armand Tanny)

Hello to the north, and may i say how pretty you are!

Hm, dont know if i can help with your freezer/butching problems, although if i had the space/means I would LOVE to get a whole deer and butcher it myself! I could get all the good stuff, blood brains and all! mmm.....(sounds a little manic! :) )

I know Lex (whos been eating raw meat for ages) eats from frozen, and he's better than just fine, hes doing great. Sure 'ideally' dont freeze, if one had the choice, but i wouldnt worry too much right now.

Oh i also much prefer chunks, cuts, joints the bigger stuff to mince (for taste and freshness) But, mince is cheaper, so for now thats what i get :) . For now...... (again dont worry!)

I found at the start I did better eating fresher meat, i found stuff sitting in the butcher next to where i work was a little too much in the way of 'happenin' meat and gave me a slight upset stomach. In contrast when I bought some delicious beef from the farmers market/markets that was nice and fresh (although frozen) it was grrrreat.

Look round the website, ask a bag load of questions, and experiment. Eat what you enjoy, and ease slowly in - I'm possitive you'll learn a bunch of stuff, be happy that you did, and reap the rewards they have to offer.

Hope that helps. :) ....and welcome! :)

-healthy relationships/social life (guess this would not just be less stress but more happiness!)
-breast-fed as children (very important, no?)
-potentially fasting (definately felt this one once before!)

good stuff.

I dont mean to sound unappreciative but 'healthy paleo diet/lifestyle'? I know that!! I was curious as to thing people might be able to quantify like the above that you might not recognise!

Your not even trying!  :P

(I'm joking a little of course, i know the overall answer in simple :) )

Do you tell all these people, ie your doctors etc about your diet Lex? I remember you said you didn't tell your dentist. I definately would, i think i would reval in their reactions! (maybe that shows me as being slightly immature!)

But seriously they might find it fascinating.

Stay out of cities, read (sf and pre-feminist fantasy), J.S. Bach, commune with Nature,  nap whenever I feel like it, live on pemmican, more.

This has been so successful that I find it useful to jack up mystress level with coffee (organic!) and cigarettes in order to do combat with the forces of darkness on the internet.    ;)

lol

Off the top of my head, i have a few, but was wanting to get a god idea what with so many people falling sick this time of year and onwards.

I have...

1.Minimise sugar consuption
2.Minimise stress
3.Minimise pollutants
4.Plenty of rest/sleep
5.Plenty of sunlight
6.Plenty of water
7.Plenty of exercise
8.Plenty of healthy fats
9.Adequate protein

Anyone have any to add? or any to question there?

I have no idea why people cling so much to the idea of recipes and cookbooks and diets and mixing foods etc. I have NEVER seen the point.

Note: Maybe recipes have merit for some people in some ways psychologically. I personally don't understand it. *shrugs*

Is this sort of comment really necessary?

--Just made a nice 'recipe' (my supper) by warming some water in a pan, putting in fatty coarse beef mince (450gs) and a palm sized piece of beef liver. I added some honey, a pinch of sea salt and a handful of redcurrants+blackcurrants. I really like my meat a little warm, and think it must be amazing to eat a warm liver of a freshly hunted animal. The difference in taste between a healthy cows and non's liver is incredible too.

Oh, and I would definately not add any currants next time! They did not go well, but the rest was lovely.

Its the closest thing to a recipe i make i think!

Although just remembered...i have been making a few....

--Few duck eggs/hen eggs, small handful of berries, pinch of salt, dab of honey - smoothies for breakfast. The berries I bought at the market are redcurrants/blackcurrants/gooseberries/straw/rasb/blue.

Honey is like crack for me, I buy a jar intending to use it sparingly and its gone in 4 days! Doh!

But yeah, those are 2 i like.

The full history is: About 6 months ago I was doing a moderate carb diet with 'healthy' fats meat and fish and veggies cooked and raw which felt great. Then I was doing cooked paleo, then raw zero carb which didn't work out. Most recently I was trying to get back into raw paleo but breaking it with loads of fruit or a carby take away.

Hmm, my history is very similar to this, and have experienced very similar symptoms. I find that the minute i eat some sugar I am fine! Surely this is all just sugary gut to fatty gut adaption? After all it is a lifetime of eating one way vs a few weeks/months/years of another that is totally different. I have a feeling this is the general vibe most will give here. Perhaps you can feel a little more relaxed knowing someone else is in the same boat.

I'll keep you posted, we'll figure it out mate.

General Discussion / Re: Are there any Nutarians out there...?
« on: July 18, 2009, 03:56:00 am »
I've found the same thing. Sometimes so called "health food" can make me feel way worse than so called "junk food." For example, a greasy fast food burger would go down better for me than a falafel or hummus pita sandwich from a chic vegetarian "health food" place. Potato chips or even candy and ice cream would go down better than nuts or seeds.

I know what you mean :)

super inf, am i right in saying that you mostly eat just fruit? that would surely mean you might have real issues digesting even 150g worth of nuts and their high fat content too....

General Discussion / Re: Are there any Nutarians out there...?
« on: July 17, 2009, 08:30:29 am »
I personally find nuts very hard to digest. Eat in small ammounts if at all. A nut really doesnt want to be eaten at all, and interfears with digestion. I guess it needs to defend itself somehow, so shells, anti nutrients are its weapons. My guess is that they would have played a relatively small part (but a part none-the-less) in our historical diet. I think one can maybe gain from simple processing such as soaking/sprouting to limit these factors - if one wanted to eat them. Also, nut are of course seasonal.

This is definately the first time I have heard the word 'nutarian'!   ;)
