Off Topic / handling stress
« on: July 21, 2009, 07:33:16 am »
A lot of the the foods and/or substances people consume are a means to alter perception.  There are probably some personality traits that we share just to have found our way here.  So how do you handle stress? That's got to be part of staying paleo, as giving into to altering foods/substances could be quite derailing.

I've never been an emotional eater, more the opposite really.  I'm not hungry when I'm nervous or upset about something.  Haha, though there was a time I had a really bad day and I invited friends over for a hot fudge ice cream sunday dinner!  I've never smoked, drink excessively, drugs or anything either.  My outlet has always been athletics.  I absolutely have to work out daily with very high intensity or I just don't feel balanced, eventually I'll be less and less happy with life in general. My response to stress is usually something for endurance to exhaustion, I'll even fantasize about running until I actually get to go. Hopefully by the time my run is over I've figured out how I'm going to handle the situation too.

How do you handle the stresses life throws your way?

For example, one of my problem food categories turned out to be nightshades--even tomatoes and bell peppers. I had suspected them a bit, but I initially decided they were probably Paleo and that the claims about them causing arthritis and the like were probably overdone. However, years later my health did improve when I eliminated them.

PaleoPhil, it took years between giving up the nightshades and noticing improvement?  What improvements did you notice?... arthritis??

Thanks!... Just curious :)

Hi Jayce,

Welcome!  You have a cool name.

I found my way here for IBS issues too. Diet does seem to be helping me though, but maybe that's cuz celiac runs in my family though I've never been tested.  It's not been an overnight fix though. I am  almost two months raw red meat and fat only and I feel like I'm just barely over some extremely thin line between health and illness.  Fruits and veg are definitely the worst for me too!  I can keep you updated, hopefully I'll have progress to report.  I'm also going to get the amalgam removed from my mouth in about a month.  I used to work with autistic children, so it's something I swore I'd do before I'd ever have children of my own, but now I wonder if there is any other implication for the IBS.

Raw Rob and Wodgina and maybe others have cured their IB issues, maybe they'll have more to say about how long it took.

Good luck!

Just bumping this up to see what people are doing these days.

Since this thread I've also replaced my VCO with suet tallow for my skin. I don't have any skin problems or anything, but I still think it's great cuz I only need a little bit and not everyday as a moisturizer.  VCO I used more frequently.

Hahaha, I think it's funny to bring this up on a forum that is predominantly male posters :)

Got to try some bone marrow... I love it!

So far it's been white/pinkish in color, but I just saw one that has brownish coloring where it's close to the bone.  It's okay?

Thanks!

Hey Tyler, I think you did good for yourself to have them removed!... maybe it will present in the long run?  I looked up the half-life of mercury and it's 15-30 years in the CNS without chelation.  Also I found that the amount of mercury absorbed is up to 15 micrograms per day per amalgam filling, fish and seafood portion about 2.3 micrograms, and environment 0.3 micrograms per day.  Well, I'm not an expert, but sounds that proper removal can be a good thing.

While I do believe that vaccination is unhealthy, I don't believe it causes the kind of mass epidemics re autism that has been claimed. I mean study after study has shown no health-problems from ingesting tiny traces of mercury(for example there was that famous syechelles study which showed that children of seychelles islanders who ate 10 times as much seafood as the average american citizen, did not have any neurological defects):-

Could be, but I don't think that example supports you.  There are three classes of mercury compounds: elemental, inorganic salts, and organic.  They are each unique in every clinical way from tissue distribution, biotransformations, elimination, diagnosis, and management.  Your example (fish) is organic mercury, but amalgam and vaccinations utilize elemental mercury.  I'm not sure the two can be compared for toxicity.

Plus, this could all be bs (I have no idea), but if the fish eaten raw, AV would  call it 'bio-mercury'... or something like that.  And I think he says this is actually detoxifying, while cooking would make it more deleterious.

Still wondering what you think! :)

Hi Dan!

Now for the questions.
-Should I eat my food right out the fridge or should I let it sit room temperature for a few minutes?
-Marinade? Is vinegar okay or does that damage the meat?

I do not at all like eating my meals cold.  My food is room temp when I eat it.

I think vinegar is supposed to be okay for white meat to marinate, but not red.  So if you want to add it to your red meat, just do so right before you eat.  I don't use vinegar though, so it's just what I've read.

If anyone has links or any book recommendations please post.

I think this forum has a lot of links for readings.  There are a few different diet types here with their own section, maybe you can peruse the section(s) of your interest and that will lead you to the books you want to read.

Anyway, welcome!, and what do you feed your dog?

such as amalgam fillings and thimerosal-containing vaccines...

I used to work with autistic children, so I'm kind of passionate about this topic.  The downside was that it just made me feel like autism was more prevalent than it really is.  It is on the rise though.  The amount of mercury in vaccines has increased something like 30-fold more than it was about 20 years ago.  And if a scientist were to write a grant using thimerosal for some aspect of the study, it will not get funded/(s)he will be asked to use a different mercury source.  (At least that's what a doctor told me.)  Pharmaceuticals will say that the benefit of vaccination outweighs the risk of autism.  I know so many people with autistic children though, I'd be afraid to vaccinate if I had kids... amongst other things that I think may contribute to the onset of this disorder.

As for amalgam fillings, I thought they were implicated in so many chronic illness and neurodegenerative problems.  I don't know anyone with experience here, so I don't know.  The industries, of course, will say that the toxicology is insignificant to cause any illness.... yet, amalgam fillings are no longer permitted.

Your thoughts?

Do most people here do crossfit-like workouts?  If so, do you also do other types of workouts (I know some people wrote about martial arts, etc.)?  What is the duration of your workouts and how many times per week?

Something about your writings is too darn cute!

I don't know much about your motivations, but your goals are obvious.  (You're way ahead of me with those liver smoothies ;))

I've never been that far west.  I went to Arizona one summer and was teased for the way I pronounce Oregon (with 3 syllables, lol!)  Have a wonderful trip!!

My fallback choice is raw organic egg yolks.
Same for me if I'm in a crunch on a raw fat source.  I love them, though, so it's not so intolerable for me.  Also, I would do better with lightly cooked meat than dairy, avocado, or nuts.  But that's just me.

Look forward to hearing about your trip!

I don't know if I'll be able to articulate this well, but I once knew someone who worked with autistic children who had a hypothesis about this based on that people without neurological deficits have more trace metals in their hair than those with, he thought this had something to do with an impaired elimination of trace metals by those with neurological deficits.  He then went on to hair = antenna.... like the cliche mental patient who puts a metal/aluminum hat on their head... he thinks that is the basis for that.  Actually, now that I think of it, he also said that mental patients have a tendency to eat raw meat, for which, of course, they are scolded.

I'm now also remembering the story of Hercules...  physical strength associated with his long hair, but physical weakness without it.

hey josh,

what about maybe a fatty ground meat and raw egg yolks?  i don't know if that works for you, but it would be easier to find an immediate source?

if eating starch/carbs works for you, that's one thing, but your writing sounds like you're making compromises.

Shelby,

I can relate to so much of what you have written. I went raw vegan at first, which I thought was helping initially, but then I got so sick... I weighed around 100lbs and I'm 5'7 and I was so badly anemic I looked like a ghost and my protein levels were dangerously low.

The pains of IBS are agonizing!

For me sugars (raw honey, raw dairy, even fruits) made things worse (I was the complete opposite of constipated!).  Vegetables came out the way they went in, so I figured there was no point to eating them either.  ACV, lemon juice and drinks like Kombucha I thought were to be alkalizing or with probiotics absolutely killed my insides.  I was  basically trying to combine what doctors were telling me and what raw vegan advocates were publishing and it wasn't working.  So I finally started eating what didn't make my stomach hurt... eggs, fish,  and chicken. (Chicken was always cooked, eggs hard boiled unless I just ate the yolks raw, fish pan seared.)  Then I started adding raw red meat, and letting go of the chicken and fish.  It's only been... less than 8 mos and only a few months really committed to staying without carbs and mostly recently to fully raw to see how that facilitates my improvements, but I've come such a long way!!, though I know I have improvements still.  That eating is not the least bit painful is amazing in itself! My lips are very colorful red again and I'm back to working out at the gym and other activities to put the weight back on.  I'm at 115 lbs now.  I don't have the confidence yet, but hope to at least be able to add back seasonal fruits from the farmers market without ill-effect.  We'll see.

Anyway, my major changes toward improvement didn't happen until I eliminated starches especially.  I am far better with cooked lean meat than any starch/carb.

I hope this helps!!  and wish you all the best, I really think you can significantly improve your health too!!  You're more than welcome to  contact me further if I can be of any help.

Do you notice any correlation between the time of day and quality of your digestive capabilities?

Also, what determines the timing of your meal(s)?... the clock, your schedule, true hunger only?
