Health / Re: Middle of night cravings -- help please
« on: April 07, 2013, 09:39:27 am »
i think i'd be concerned for the reason of my disturbed sleep first. if it's hunger waking you, then i agree with the others about more fat, or maybe just more food during waking hours.

and then after eating in the middle of the night, you are able to just go right back to sleep? that baffles me, i'm very awake once i eat, but i know some people do great sleeping on a full tummy :)

I thought it would  be fun to share some recipes or even decent products that people use for personal hygiene, beauty, etc.  I just read a book called 'no more dirty looks', and there were actually some good ideas in there.

make-up: for black coloring (eye liner, mascara, eye shadow) - mix activated charcoal with oil

lotion: after using just coconut oil all winter and my skin still being horribly dry and rough, i am now in the process of making tallow based lotion.  according to online sources, mixing 10 parts tallow with 1 part any room temp oil will keep it soft enough. essential oils optional.

avocados are such an easy way to add calories... and in public! ;D  plus i just like them so... maybe i'll start with a huge cut back before i ban them  :(

thanks phil for the post and resources!

Try Mercola's Krill Oil....

i'm going to look it up, but what do you know about the processing procedures??

Well, it sounds like your adrenals are in pretty good shape.  Tell me about your exercise habits, though.  Jessica managed to accidentally stop her menstruation partly through doing too much exercise + work.

I think switching back to mostly animal fats might be a good experiment.

Do there appear to be any OTHER hormone-related issues going on, that have changed in roughly the same time frame as your menstruation stopping?  I know this is getting personal, but it's cause for concern.

i posted a personal topic, so all relevant, personal questions welcome.

i really cannot think of anything else going on. i really feel quite great these days. this diet is a large part of the journey, but of course there's more, and together, especially these last few months, i feel like me, myself and i are finally coming back to one :D  i'm happy, and i'm optimistic.

my winter exercise schedule is less than summer, but it's usually a yoga class 3-4 days per week and then something with weights/body weight stuff a couple times per week. nothing too intense there. my work is nothing arduous at all.

when you wrote hormones, it made me think of sunshine... i haven't seen any in months!  maybe i could get some sun, earth grounding, and more animal fats. i think that could be a good start.

oh, yes, i forgot that i did look in the asian markets here. they have them boiled and frozen  >:

haven't found them fresh or frozen, not even online.  online there are uk and new zealand companies.

i think they are baby herring?  they're great, and i love the idea that i'm eating the whole thing.

does anyone know if/where to get these in usa?  i had them in uk, do the uk people, or anyone else,  eat them? i think they're really good tasting. easy way to eat the entire fish. i'm not finding them in usa, nor that anyone knows what i'm talking about.

Ioanna, how are your adrenals?  How long can you go without eating?  How many times a day do you eat? Are you stressed and tired a lot?  How well do you sleep?

adrenals... i assume fine?... i forgot, how would know??

i can go without eating just fine. i don't get jittery or anything. i usually eat two regular meals and sometimes plus a third smaller meal.

i do stress a lot, i'm too much a perfectionist. but i've been working on this and doing much better about it this year.

with sleep i am great! random insomnia on occasion, but mostly i fall sleep nearly immediately and sleep quite hard. i wake wanting more sleep during the work week, but once i'm up i'm happy and energetic for a long day.  on the weekends when i can wake wo an alarm i wake more refreshed feeling.

i think this all means my adrenals are good?

don't know if others have experienced this or not, but I had to give up avocados.  They were causing me pain in the area of my liver.  I would eat maybe one half to 2/3  of one a day.  Trust me, I like them, was hard to admit that they weren't good for me.  Reminds me of what I think Ray Peat said about them, that they are mostly pufa and then something about hepatic... can remember his wording.   I know if I eat them alone, as a way to test how they fuel me, they sit fine, but don't give me any real energy or feeling of strength.
Some of the online literature claims they are good for the liver, almost as a flush.  But I wonder if that's just for SAD dieters with their own set of maladies.

ahhhh, darn!!  ;D   avocado are so good, filling and sit well with me.  i've sorta been eating 1-2 a day in place of most animal fat, i wonder if this is something to do with my problem? i was trying to add some alkalizing foods to my diet since i otherwise don't really do well with any other fruit.  i agree with you... they sit fine, but no real energy. animal fats do a lot more for me in that regard.  i will try giving them a rest and see how that goes.  up my animal fats, and see if i get back on track.

ah, you are lucky, i think lamb organ mix would be very good!  our farmers market starts up again mid-April, so i'm looking forward to getting my organ mix again. i'm not sure if they have lamb, but now i'm going to ask  :D

my weight normal is within a 10 pound range, and i've been at the lower end of this range lately (ck, about the same weight as in that video).  but even then i was regular in my cycle. i don't feel too lean, i feel just normal.

i've been eating more plant fats lately... mostly avocado and the occasional olive oil for pesto or something. for animal fats it's been mostly egg yolks and fatty fish, and a lot less lamb or bison fatty meats that i had been eating. i had this idea that i was eating too much protein, so as my gi tract is healing and i can eat more variety i've been trying to incorporate more foods.  the plant fats digest easier for me than suet and marrow gives me horrible pain in my lower right abdomen (colon) after 12hrs (no idea why?!) or so of eating it, so that's out.  maybe i'll try eating more fatty fish.... i think the cholesterol is a good point!

thanks all for the replies!!

i have trouble enough getting food for myself that is not frozen (most of my food is bought frozen from farms), so how do you find fresh for your dogs?? i get dog food also from farms, in bulk, and frozen. my dog does not have skin issues, but i'm sure she'd be in heaven with fresh food.

anyone have experience with this? advice on how to get back on track? i'm so frustrated  -\

i tried the lamb "dog food" (meat, livers, heart) IT IS SO AMAZING.  way better then the lamb meat along, and its very finely ground so its almost like pate...very bright red.  i am going to try an order 10 pounds :)

where do you order this from?

edit: ah, found it, from the farm you're on presently. i was wondering why you would 'order' when you're living off the land ;)

i had cod with basil pesto too! :)

eve, i thought california was the only u.s. state that did not have to flash pasteurize the almonds??  i've even seen marketing claiming that their almonds are truly raw, not pasteurized, because they come from california.

Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Re: Raw meat only... for now?
« on: March 16, 2013, 09:05:48 am »
i did meat only for a while (about a year, but with some experimenting on occasion) because it was the only food i could tolerate.  when i ate like this my digestion was normal, but anything else and i was in pain, my colon spasming, and i'll spare the rest of details.  i agree with troll, and had found a way to enjoy organs too.  little by little i've been introducing more and more foods. i'm almost where i want to be, not quite yet though.

my experience with goat milk/goat milk kefir: i tried goat milk and did fine with it. i loved the calm i got from drinking warm milk.  i then tried kefir thinking that if raw milk was fine, then kefir would be even better.  what a disaster! i don't know why... maybe the acidity?... kefir is awful for me.   i still did well with raw milk though, but later on when i tried to increase the amount of milk, i didn't do so well :/    so i just stopped altogether.  the only reason i was drinking it is because i really enjoyed the calm of raw warm milk.  i must just like the opiates :D, and that would have kept me drinking it if it worked for me.  but i stopped rather quickly, i don't think it's a food for me.  that said, there are members here from time to time who get incredibly healing results with raw milk, so i think it's an individual thing.

fermented cabbage to this day is not good for me. i love it!, but it goes right through me seemingly undigested.

raw butter was extremely healing at one point. it lost it's magic for some reason :(

ground flax seeds are soothing to the intestines. i don't like the idea of eating nuts or seeds on any regular basis, but my body does so well that i eat a small amount a few times per week.  i'll stop as soon as my body doesn't need them anymore.  regular flax seeds have a laxative effect, but are also soothing.

honey depends on the brand, but i stopped eating it because it's too addictive for me.  i didn't notice any digestive benefits.

good luck!

Aajonous also writes on how to make the cheese yourself. that's the only cheese i would trust to truly be raw if i were going to eat cheese.

do you really trust any cheese in a store to be truly raw? their definition of raw is unpasteurized. at least, i'm guessing that they boil the milk before adding cultures.  plus the added salt.  it's too much, and who knows what kind.

i really like sweetbreads!! i've never just taken a slice of pancreas, but i love the flavor it adds when ground with muscle meat.

i finally found a source to try some new things. so far i've had pheasant and duck. both are great. the duck fat is now my favorite fat.  it's the softest fat i've ever had. i'm sure how i could now if the duck is really wild though. they have wild boar, but i was not so brave, maybe next time. any suggestions?

PP is the only other one to mention not getting any benefit from "high-meat".  Have you tried eating several big mouthfuls of "high-meat" per day? Also my own experience was that I only experienced the benefits of "high-meat" the next day after eating them - no idea why, but you shouldn't perhaps expect instant results.

not several big mouthfuls per day. i usually only eat at weekends. i can't tell if it's helping me or not though so i slack in preparing it.

You seem like a naturally cheery and content person Ioanna, it may be that people who's mood suffers more because of negative stimuli (processed foods, stress etc) notice more, the mood altering effects of high meat, due to the rule of relativity. The same way I don't really notice mood elevation from cannabis the way I used to when I was SAD because I'm so freaking happy all the time in spite of stimuli, thank you raw animal flesh. Just a possible theory, or could just be a variable built in biochemistry.

oh, that's a good point. if my mood were down, i might notice something more immediate. i'm kind of wired though, i was hoping for the 'high'  :D   also i was hoping for improvement digestion wise. sometimes my abdomen still feels a bit bloated which i think is bad gut flora?  so i've been keeping carbs low again and eating aged or high meats to try to get the balance back.
