General Discussion / probiotics
« on: June 01, 2008, 07:06:16 pm »
ive been taking probiotics on and off for probably close to five years. they do seem to increase digestion/food transit time/ general lighter feeling in abdomen, when eating cooked food, but when eating raw(paleo) i dont feel any need for them.

anyway, ive always wondered if the bacteria typically found in probiotics in anyway inhibit or compete with the bacteria found in the typical RAF diet?

Food amounts and bodyweight is certainly a mystery. I've seen people who outweigh me by a lot who eat a lot less. Crazyness.

i agree,

ive spent weeks at a time eating 1500cal(sometimes only 1000cal)a day, and didnt drop below 170lbs(5'8"). ive also eaten close to 3,000 cals a day for weeks and didnt break 180-182lbs. exercise, relatively, stayed the same.

i also, thank god, build muscle and lose fat quicker and easier than most. genetics are definitely a factor, i believe.

General Discussion / Re: Supplements
« on: June 01, 2008, 06:51:28 pm »
The only supplement that I need is sea salt otherwise I get easily dehydrated, get a rapid heartbeat and get over-heated.

Craig

Craig, how much Sea Salt do you comsume a day?

104
that was great, thanks for that Craig.

i wish they kept the Q&A protion.

p.s. Alpha-Glycerol-Phosphate, one more term to remember!   ;)

I doubt that dairy is responsible for atherosclerosis but it does contribute to osteoporosis because of excess calcium.

Craig

how does excess calcium cause osteoporosis?
ive heard that milk is more dominant in Phosphorus, and is therefore acidic in its breakdown which acidifies the blood which increases calcium excretion from bones.

is there a full version?

thats a good vid to show "common minded" people, cuz theres people in it with white coats, which means that you can trust them.  ;D

I'd really like to see the whole thing. It's a step in the right direction but I believe I heard more emphasis on fruits and vegetables than on fish, meat and fat. They should have more of an Inuit diet, don't you think?

I also wonder, are First Nations people allowed to hunt sea mammals?

i know, they call it "My Big, Fat Diet", and the only types of food i heard was fruits and vegetables.  ???

Info / News Items / Announcements / Re: Grass Fed Beef
« on: June 01, 2008, 03:34:47 pm »
Grass fed beef tastes great compared to feedlot beef.
That is as far as the beef I come across in the markets near where I live.

i couldnt agree more!
when i started a RAF diet, i would only eat Bison from Whole Foods because i enjoyed the taste and didnt like the beef that i would buy there, then they started getting 100%grassfed beef and its very identical to the Bison. big difference, grain-fed vs. grass-fed.

i do give him props for some of the stuff that he eats, but hes no "survivalist", hes a fake, and is an injustice to anyone who would emulate him in the situations hes in. hes over-dramatic and will do things that would be incredibly stupid if you were in an actual survival situation. Les Stroud is a good example of a real Survivalist.

Thanks guys. Perhaps it was a combination of reading both Art's website and thumbing through Good Cals vs Bad Cals.  Out of everyong, who likes to consume carbs pwo vs fat and protein? Do you notice much difference in way of recovery when consuming carbs vs protein or fat?

i didnt feel any difference with carbs post-WO. maybe, my muscles felt alittle fuller, more often, but i dont remember soreness/recovery or strength being much different. this is with weight lifting. with longer duration exercise, more like endurance exercise, i do think i had a quicker recovery rate.

General Discussion / Re: frozen/fresh meat
« on: June 01, 2008, 03:23:16 pm »
if your eating your meat raw, Fresh would definitely be better?

but if your cooking your meat, it probably doesn't matter if its fresh or frozen, would this be correct?

i do eat it raw, i assume that freezing kills off most of the bacteria and therefore would not be as good as fresh, that my main thinking behind it.

so with cooking i assume if it was frozen wouldnt matter seeing all bacteria, as far as im aware, are killed by cooking.

General Discussion / frozen/fresh meat
« on: May 29, 2008, 11:08:11 pm »
does anyone eat meat that hasnt been frozen?

i get most of my meat from Whole Foods and im not sure if its frozen before they put it out, i assume it is seeing its from New Zealand. Aajonus wrote that freezing meat is inferior to fresh, and sites animal studies where animals fed frozen meat had deleterious effects vs animals fed fresh meat. but i find it hard to get it fresh.

I'm trying to find this article that I read where the author had done several controlled experiments and dispelled the myth of taking in any carbs after a workout and that any carbohydrate would kill the growth hormone release afterwards. It was best to wait awhile after training to the let the GH peak and then to eat a meal consisting of fat and protein for hormone production and repair.

ive seen Colpo make the claim that Carbs pre or peri workout do suppress Growth Hormones but, carbs post-workout dont suppress GH and may even increase it: http://www.lowcarbmuscle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125
not sure how much truth is in that.

When I order my suet I get given chunks which weigh over a kilo each! so that lasts me a few days. I unfortunatley been throwing half of my food out a week, but luckily my brothers interested in RP.

How does HCl help with fat digestion, I didnt think acid did anything to fat. In what way do you not digest fat? does it go straight through you or does it just stay in your stomach?

Andrew

wodgina6722, do you order your suet online or from someone local to you?

what exactly is suet? i always thought it was just beef fat or something.

General Discussion / breakfast
« on: May 28, 2008, 01:53:52 pm »

whats your typical breakfast?

do you even eat breakfast?

i feel best with a light, late breakfast of berries or none at all. heavier breakfast make me alittle sluggish throughout the beginning of the day.

i havent read the book, but what ive read of The Warrior Diet makes some sense to me, just snacking throughout the day with a large dinner. digestion just doesnt seem to get along with activity to well.

« on: May 28, 2008, 01:48:20 pm »

im in a reading slump right now(but thats alright it'll balance back out when i snap into my next page turning frenzy!), but i was thinking about reading Fight Club next, since ive heard alot of people say that its much better than the movie, even though the movie was awesome.
it was a pleasant suprise to see Tyler Durden is a forum member here ;).

I'm reading Blood and it's Third Element by Antoine Bechamp. A good read so far, about a hundred pages in; explains the microbe theory and just how bunk Louis Pasteur was.
this sounds like an intresting book Justin, id love to hear a review when your done.

Primal Diet / Aajonus' views on meat
« on: May 28, 2008, 01:40:13 pm »

i havent read the "primal books" in a few years but i think i remember Aajonus making no distinctions between conventional supermarket meat and organic grass-fed meat. i did , and still do disagree and find it kinda weird that he would hold factory farmed meat to the same quality standard as grass-fed free-range meat.
does anyone know if hes changed his opinion on this?

Primal Diet / Re: Raw Dairy
« on: May 28, 2008, 01:34:37 pm »

when i was doing raw dairy i just had to drive about 45 minutes(still in Massachusetts) to a farm that sold raw milk and cheeses. all they did was put a sticker on the jug that said something to the effect of
" this is unpasturized and contains biological organisms" or something like that. it was a pretty cool set up, it was by the honor system, so id just have to write down what i took and what i expect to buy the next week and put my money in a cigar box. as far as im aware it was all legit, although it was kinda weird having to go at midnight and dodge the spotlights j/k ;D.
little hint: when you get the riddle at the door, the answer is "New England Clam Chowder".

Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Re: How many carbs do you need?
« on: May 28, 2008, 01:24:14 pm »

right on Craig, thanks for the excerpts and links.

i understand and agree with whats said in the excepts, it only makes sense to eat whole foods, but its just really hard to get out of the bodybuilding mindset that ive been in since 17 years old; "you need a quick source of protein immediately after you workout".

i did have a 1.5 yr stint of 100% raw paleo, but i just found that raw meat, being very neutral tasting, got pretty boring day-in and day-out and eventually decided to spice it up alittle with some cooked foods. i definitely felt best on 100%, not easy to explain to people who havent done 100%rawpaleo but you just feel really strong and clean and natural, im sure you know what i mean. anyway, coincedently i have had the urge to go 100% again for the last couple weeks and stumbled upon the link to this forum via the Sunfood forum, something may be syncronizing here  ;).

thanks again, and thanks for the forum.

because a raw liver shake everyday doesnt sound too appealing to me. im about 90% Raw Paleo, hey, i even drink coffee, im not worried about it. maybe one day ill be 100% but for now i feel fine. im not aware of these studies of fractionated animal protein being bad(although it wouldnt suprise me), do you have any links?

Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Re: How many carbs do you need?
« on: May 27, 2008, 07:13:25 pm »
i usually eat the same thing everyday give or take, so all my carbs come from berries with breakfast and lunch. but once in a while ill have a cooked yam just for a good glucose replenishment after a few days of low carbs. it really mostly depends on my workouts. if im just doing say chest/tri and some form of moderate cardio i wont supplement with carbs after my workout, but if im doing HIIT or just a long cardio session than ill add in some supplemental dextrose(25g+/-)in my post workout protein shake, which would bring it up to a 'high-carb day'(100g+).

i feel best sticking between 50 and 100g of carbs a day on average. there are days were i get below 10 and feel fine for the time being. theres also some days that i get maybe 150grams. but generally i feel best between 50 and 100grams.
