Display Your Culinary Creations / Raw Veggies Recipes
« on: June 10, 2011, 10:05:59 pm »
I don't have any photos. If I make these things again, I'll post the recipes as I do. Someone asked me for recipes, she being more of a "veggies" than a "fruit" person. I am formerly a raw vegan, so I have lots of these recipes. I do NOT guarantee they are necessarily paleo, though!!

But I think these recipes can be good for those of us transitioning into paleo. Not all of us are ready or even mentally able to just go cold turkey. So... here we go.

Corn on the cob. I found that raw corn on the cob is very good with avocado spread on it. I also use salt--you may or may not want to try it, depending on how you feel about that. But for me, I now eat butter, so I would even eat raw corn with raw butter. The salt IMO makes it more like "standard" corn on the cob. The avocado or butter adds a lot of fat to it, which is of course something we want.

Fries. I use jicama and just cut it up into small fries. I then coat with olive oil or whatever kind of oil you use. If you use spices, add them. I add a bit of garlic, some salt, and fresh chives. Do what tastes good to you. Remember, though, that jicama is a root veggie, and may not be paleo.

Zucchini Alfredo. I slice up a zucchini into "alfredo noodle" strips using my food processor. Then I grind up some garlic [I don't like it a lot, so I use a 1/4 of a clove or so--go to your own tastes] and add it to some cream [about a third of a cup]. I also add pepper and salt. If you add in some raw cashews and blend it all up to a silky feel, it tastes surprisingly close to real alfredo. To make this fully vegan, of course, you would only use the cashews, some water, the garlic, and the spices. I add chives because I have tons of chives growing in my yard. :p

Burgers. 1/2 cup or so of soaked raw cashews or macadamias, 1/2 cup carrots, a small amount of garlic to taste, 1/4 of a small onion, 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast, spices to taste. Blend in food processor until it forms a consistency of pate. Taste and add more yeast if needed. I use braggs here, because I like braggs a lot.

Mashed [not] potatoes. 2 cups or so of chopped parsnip small enough for food processing. 1/4-1/2 cup pine nuts [I don't like them, so I use less, but most people prefer more]. A bit of garlic, some salt if you eat it, a squeeze of lemon or lime juice (not fully squeezed, just a squirt of it), some oil, and a few teaspoons of water--just enough to let you process the parsnips. I can't wait to try this one with butter, I think it'll be delicious.

Primal Diet / No bread, no butter?
« on: June 10, 2011, 07:48:31 am »
How would you eat butter if you didn't have bread? I've found myself unable to eat bread, and as such, butter has fallen by the wayside. Yet it was one of my most staple raw fats.

Any thoughts besides "just eat it" which I can't manage to do or I wouldn't ask, lol.

So I've been trying to find a local farm and/or butcher to get organ meats from, but the only kind of "not muscle" meat I can find so far is tongue.

So... is it better to go ahead and get liver from the grocery store, or not? I'm uncertain, myself, as isn't organs and marrow one of the places that the hormones and such concentrate?

Thanks for any help!

(I'll be eating them raw, FYI)

Primal Diet / Question About Cultured Butter
« on: May 31, 2011, 04:11:01 am »
Strange question here. I can get cultured butter, but not raw buttermilk the cultured butter is made from. Can I just add some of the butter to a bit of milk to get the cultures, or do I need to buy it or something??

Journals / "Are You Really Gonna Eat that Raw?"
« on: May 28, 2011, 12:03:49 am »
So, I started a raw paleo diet. Yesterday, pretty much. Although I managed to eat some almost-but-not-quite raw bison steak the other day. It was hard, but I did eat it. It was a small amount, and I got through it.

Today, second strong day of being on the raw sort of paleo diet, I'm preparing to eat my first really, completely, totally raw meat. I've put honey and some cream with it to try to entice myself, but the psychological block is strong. I'm procrastinating by writing about it first... it's raw chicken, because that's what I've got.

Honey was a good idea, because I'm a real "sweet tooth" person.

I'm not liking the texture very much. Feeling a little queasy. It's the thought that counts, you know. My mind is screaming  -v !!

LOL, I wonder how long it will be before I quit reacting this way.

Three bites and my stomach is in knots. This is definitely not something I'm taking to. Maybe I'll put it into the mixer and blend it for drinking instead...

Whew, who knew it would be so hard!

Welcoming Committee / Greetings and Salutations!

New person reporting in!

I intend to do a sort of modified version of Vanderplanitz' primal diet. I don't accept the idea that we should eliminate vegetables and such to the degree he wishes. Our digestive systems and suchlike indicate herbivore. However, we are human beings, and thus we have adapted to be able to eat meat in ways that bears and racoons couldn't. It seems clear that omnivore, with herbivore prominence, is preferable for us. Single stomach, shorter intestinal tract than pure herbivores, etc. give credence to the need for meat (in my personal, non-medical opinion) and our opposable thumbs and ability to use tools also supports this idea.

Or perhaps that's just my excuse. :p

I tried a raw vegan diet for a really long time. I was listless, tired, sick, dizzy, and otherwise generally unwell. I listened to all of the "you're not doing it right" and "that's just detox" stuff and kept trying... but at some point, you have to accept that it's not working for your body (again, in my non-medical opinion).

Then I just gave up, and began to gain weight. So I went to a mostly raw veggies diet with some cooked meat. I was better, but still continuing to gain weight.

I believe that almost entirely raw (I will eat some homemade wheat bread, as per his suggestion), is the best way for me. I ate some raw meat (VERY big deal for me--I don't even like 'rare' meat and wouldn't even eat sushi), and I felt quite good. I had also started drinking raw dairy (which I am aware a lot of you frown upon) and it literally had phenomenal impact upon my general mood and decreased my pain.

So yesterday, I started out with his diet, except that I'm eating more veggies and such than he recommends, and probably less meat. In part due to financial issues, also.

I will keep my Excel logs and alter my eating as I go along. If I find the veggies aren't working out, I'll stop them. I think every Body is different, so I am preparing to launch into a primarily raw diet with only a bit of cooked bread that I make myself. Including raw meat (gulp!) and continuing the raw cream and milk I've been consuming.

My biggest fear, however (yes, dreadful, I get it) is that I'll gain more weight. Please tell me it's possible to actually lose weight on this diet. I did on the raw vegan diet (until I looked literally skeletal and shook all the time--not THAT MUCH, please!).

Thanks for reading if you made it this far, and good luck in your personal lifestyle journeys, also!!
