Health / Horrible pain, agonizing muscle spasms...
« on: March 16, 2011, 03:56:12 am »
This thread isn't to discuss my health problems as I'm in great shape.  My roommate's health, however, is a different story.  I'd like to tell about his problems and his diet, and perhaps get feedback from the group that I can pass on.

His problems started a few years ago when he was training for a triathlon.  At first he experienced a subtle pain in the joint that connects his right leg to his pelvis.  Over time it got worse and worse, to the point that now the pain is so severe that he's rendered largely immobile.  He tells me the pain comes as shooting pains from his joint down his leg, and he also suffers from sudden and severe muscle spasms that grip his gluteus maximus/minimus and most muscles around his right hip and thigh and sometimes in his lower back.  He can't sit, stand or lay down without feeling pain, and the painkillers he gets by prescription from the (Western) doctor are barely able to moderate the pain.  I often wake late at night hearing him wailing in his room next to mine, but he insists there's nothing I can do and the doctors he's seen (several types) have no idea what's wrong.  All they do is keep giving him stronger medicine, including steroids, valium, and Percocet.

Besides his joint problems, he also has a serious digestive disorder that causes him to have perpetually soft/loose stools.  When he needs to do #2 (solid waste) the need arises suddenly, and its quite, er...  loud.  You can hear him go from anywhere in the apartment.  It also sounds like it's quite painful, given the sounds he makes when he goes.  He's starting to realize, now that he lives with me (I guess he's mostly lived alone in the past), that going to the bathroom isn't supposed to be like that.

He eats mostly oatmeal (fantasizes about starting a business where he mixes up and sells 'gourmet' oatmeal recipes).  Aside from oatmeal he eats other grains, nuts (raw and roasted/toasted), some fruit (usually bananas), and usually one egg each day.  He occasionally eats meat, and he always fries eggs or meat in olive oil.  He probably gets 80-90% of his calories from carbs based on my observations, the rest from protein and fat.  He agreed to try to avoid gluten-containing grains for a while to see if that helps his digestive problem, but with his ongoing joint problem I don't know whether he's following through on this.  He spends a lot of time at the hospital and at another friend's house who lives closer to his doctor(s), so I haven't seen him eat much around the house lately and don't know what he gets when he eats at other places.

Ideas?

Suggestion Box / Symantics of raw meat
« on: October 25, 2010, 09:14:04 pm »
I was reading through a few threads this morning, and it struck me how we ALWAYS qualify any mention of eating an animal product by stating we ate it raw.  I ate raw liver, I ate raw beef, I ate raw lamb, etc.  Since this is a raw forum, I propose we all get in the habit of not qualifying every mention of food consumption with the term "raw".  I think we can take that as a given.

Primal Diet / Primal Diet books for sale

I have both of AV's books as hard copies, and would like to sell or trade them.  PM me if you're interested.  I'd prefer to ship them within the United States, as it gets expensive to ship them outside.

General Discussion / Preserving meat without freezing
« on: July 11, 2010, 09:07:12 pm »
I'm a hunter.  The nice part about being a hunter is I get a lot of low-cost, very high quality meat in the fall, assuming I'm on my game.  As I learn more about (through reading and experience) the benefits of eating my meat and fat raw, I'm drawn to finding ways to preserve it that maintain as much nutritional content as possible--or ideally enhance nutritional content.  Hunters typically preserve their meat by freezing, and I did this last fall.  I've read, though, that freezing reduces the nutritional value of meat by degrading enzymes and vitamins. I've also read (in AV's We Want To Live that drying also reduces nutritional content.  So I wonder, what other options are there for preserving large quantities of meat that don't involve drying or freezing?

Recipes would be great!

I live in the USA and would like to buy Aajonus' two books, but don't want to pay full price.  Anyone willing to sell their copies?  Or, dare I say this, anyone have the PDF versions who are willing to pass them along?  PM me and we can figure things out.

This book was published last year.  I just received it and haven't read it yet, and wonder if others have and what they thought.  Author is Lierre Kieth.  She was a vegan for 20 years before she apparently gave it up for health and ethical reasons.  The back cover of the book has a review from someone at The Weston Price Foundation.

Off Topic / Modern spear hunting!

Found this while doing a web search for companies that make spears.

Haven't bought any of his books or DVDs, but I suspect I will.  Spear hunting is illegal here in Vermont, but it's not illegal in all states and countries, so I might practice up for a few years and make some travel arrangements...

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Toshitsugi Takamatsu, the last ninja...
« on: January 11, 2010, 12:06:01 am »
I've been reminiscing over my years training in ninjutsu recently, and recalled a book I'd read years ago that the previous grandmaster, Toshitsugu Takamatsu, abhorred the cooking of meat.  He was Japanese so I assume he ate fish, but perhaps her ate other meats as well.  Anyone have more biographical information on him who can tell more about his diet?

Hot Topics / Evolutionary benefits of cooking?

I've spent a lot of time reading through this website, and the idea that people are meant to be raw omnivores seems to make a great deal of sense.  Among millions of species we alone cook our food.  Why should we be different than everyone else?

This begs two questions:

1.  Why did we (as a species) start cooking our food?

2.  If it's so unhealthy to cook our food, why has this behavioral trait been preserved over hundreds of generations and spread among almost all extant human cultures?

Off Topic / Beyond Civilization?
« on: December 31, 2009, 10:53:51 pm »
Daniel Quinn, best known for writing the novel Ishmael and its sequels Story of B and My Ishmael, wrote the non-fiction book Beyond Civilization around the year 2000.  Anyone else read this?  If so, what do people think about it?  I'm tempted to summarize, but there are such a diverse array of ideas in the book that I fear I'd bias people's views and interpretations of the book if I did so.

I live in Burlington, Vermont.  It would be cool to meat up with someone with similar dietary interests to chat.  I'm a raw omnivore, also into "primitive" skills, tracking, etc.

Welcoming Committee / Very first post...
« on: December 27, 2009, 09:11:45 am »
I was really pleased to find this website, I happened upon it while doing a search that had "paleo" in it.  I've been experimenting with raw diets for the last five years and have been experimenting with a cooked paleo diet for the last year or so after reading a few books on the subject last winter.  I killed my first deer this past fall, and have long thought raw game tasted much better than cooked, so this felt like a good time to explore a raw paleo diet.  I never imagined there would be resources like this available, but I'm glad there are!

No questions as of yet regarding the diet.  Solstice passed earlier this past week, and that was the start of my raw paleo diet, so we'll see how it goes.  I've already fallen off the wagon on a couple instances due to the Christmas holiday, which I feel obligated to participate in even though I'm not religious.

I guess I do have a question regarding my avatar.  Do people feel this is acceptable?  I figured folks who advocate a raw paleo diet would be accepting of images like this, but if anyone feels uncomfortable with it please let me know and I can change it to something a little less *messy*.

All the best...
