Servicing the bikes so we can start riding when it warms up....and ride to the lake for a swim a coupla times a week.

Today (Tuesday):

60 pull-ups
60 chin-ups
200 squats
400 calf raises

Just curious, why do calf raises when you can do things barefoot (sprint, walk, run, hike)?

I believe what neone was saying was that alot of the ZCers will claim that - contrary to common knowledge - that without any carbs the body actually will perform extremely well in endurance type situations (far better than any carb loading), but that it won't perform as well in short burst type exercise or in building serious muscle mass. Again..this is THEIR claim.

I really don't know what the long term solution is for best health or even the the best program for lifting in the short term. I experiment with a variety of things but overall I have no problem with short term energy or building muscle eating next to no carbs. most of the carbs I eat are from animal sources like organs and eggs and vegetables like herbs and mushrooms. I'll eat some fruit when I got to the market and get whatever I want which is usually 1-2 pieces of fruit 1-2 times a week.

So while I don't know if any of this is even healthy, I can say that if one is serious about using fat efficiently for energy ts certainly a commitment that might require an entire year or more of shitty symptoms... including massive chronic fatigue and virtually no energy for exercise. just my experience.

Very true KD, but then there are people like me who run on fat fuel. I have the absolute shittiest workouts when running on carbohydrates. My body loses energy really fast and I get extremely sluggish before I even get to the gym. Does not matter the carb source whether it be from fruit or not, although some low glycemic carbs such as vegetables will do. Either way, as long as I have a good amount of fat 1-2hrs before my workout, it is the best workout ever. I also am ketogenic, eating nothing but meat and maybe a fruit here and there like once or twice a week. I've been keto for months and have not had a single problem as of yet. If anything I have more energy, or it may be a placebo thing due to the fact that high fat clears my skin and I am more confident out in public. Directly or indirectly, high fat and low to zero carb works wonders for me. But then again, I will say I am eating a good amount of protein, which has the potential to convert 57% of aminos into glucose so the little carbs I am running on are from protein.

I think a good way to look at stretching is that yes it is not paleo, but neither is squatting 500lbs or doing bench presses, therefore, unnatural exercises may require unnatural rehabilitation. I am a proponent of stretching, unfortunately in spite of convenience, I never do them.

you know, we had another guy similar to you who had been all drugged up and had  learned all the dark secrets of bodybuilding
and how everyone now had to do bike sprints or whatever.

you are still missing or fudging some fundamental things

for one, you can do bench press one day a week for 10 minutes and have better results than hours of swimming.

swimming is a refinement exercise. If you want a body like Iggy Pop, you swim in the ocean. Thats what he did, and it works. However it happens to be a tremendous amount of effort, time and energy that most people cannot afford.  swimming in a pool is probably the most diametrically opposite thing to healthful exercise I can possibly think of, so it doesn't even possibly qualify as a healthy substitute for anything - including nautilus machines - as there is only negative net health there.

all these other things similarly you are massively trading efficiency (power-lifting) for time and energy, which also means added calories. I personally do not have these to spare, therefore anything other than short spurts of speed and cardio worked into full body exercises like box jumping, lateral jumps, lunges and jump roping have any use for me.

This idea that being able to swim or run is somehow useful skills is just totally subjective.

My statistical guess is .05999 percent of people I have ever met....scratch that:looked in the eye have ever needed to swim, run, or fight for their life. 99.999999% of people that are involved in running, bodybuilding, crossfit, powerlifting are just trying to get the type of body that they find is ideal and to hopefully also increase their overall health.

So while essentially everything you happen to now prize as the highest echelons of 'paleo' health I see as useless, I do gauge that many people even on this site could not lift my Slankers order (60 lbs) up to my third floor apartment. To me this is something useful, as with similar uses of basic lifting augmented by strength training exercise.

Back to bench, you can get excellent results just doing burpees and dips but they don't yield the same specific result, so therefore there is 0 critical argument there, making the only plausible argument one of safety.

if you are lifting weights, its probably a safer bet to focus on functional strength rather than isolated exercises. This is pretty much the only 'truth' I can see. as for benching..virtually every member of Iron Addicts does bench press, and these guys are all competitive strength trainers and not bodybuilders. Some of these guys are in their 50's and 60's. Years not doing bench did nothing positive for me and had the obvious result.

---

the other things is this is a health forum thats unlike others in the sense that it promotes a diet which proves particularly cataboliizing for most folks (by this I mean muscle built from old materials, not muscle built on the diet.) making much of this irrelevant anyway.

Its possible you've radically re-examined your past errors or whatever but if you are interested in truly learning in clearing out old drugs, tissues, and then re-building muscles on a raw diet, perhaps you are still somewhat oversimplifying things.

KD, I am just like you in your workout philosophy. What is functional in our every day lives is what promotes energy and vigor. I am interested in building a body that can set an example for others while also building functional muscles (instead of hypertrophy). A body that denotes power and athleticism is the true goal, while also being able to actually do the things you look like you can do (strength).

I for one also do not have the time to run marathons and swim laps, and personally it is boring for me. If one cannot gain both anerobic strength and increase aerobic capacity doing box jumps or sprints which may take 10-30 minutes as opposed to running miles that could take hours, there is something wrong. Also in the 21st century, we basically all have adrenal fatigue as a result of excess cortisol from exogenous environmental toxins, too much work, stress, relationship problems, and overtraining. Who really needs to be exercising more? Maybe if you are a sponsored bodybuilder who is being paid to train, eat, and sleep, but for the rest of us regular Joes who work and go to college like me, for those with kids, and stressful jobs, and a house to maintain, the last thing we need to do is exercise more, if anything we need more relaxation.

This premise is why I agree with KD, as the real goal in working out is getting the most benefit in the least amount time. Who really wants to be in the gym for hours?

seeing as i seem to be saying every gym exercise is crap i thought for the sake of clarity i will mention some that i think are NOT crap:

* bent over barbell row
* power clean
* standing press
* lunges ( although frankly i never did them, but they make sense )

also for any exercise that can be performed unilaterally ( one side at a time ) you should occasionally do it that way.  for example you should sometimes row with just one hand ( but don't assume you can handle half the weight you do with both hands - as it becomes a completely different exercise - so start from a safe low weight ).

* one of my favorite gym exercises is something i have never seen anybody do except me.  it is a unilateral pull down.  if you were climbing a mountain you would essentially be doing chin ups unilaterally - one hand at a time.

You dont think squats and deads are functional???

Another thing I dont always agree with is changing things up all the time. I have been doing this same routine for about 6 months and am getting killer strong, while my friends who always change it up are still stuck at similar weight ranges. There is something to be said about consistency and doing the same routine for a while. I think some people dont give their programs enough of a chance.

i used to work out in that rep range 5-6 reps per set.  you get very strong but i wouldn't say very fit that way.  and you also don't get the best possible muscle size this way either.

if all you do is low reps and you then go to a swimming pool and try to swim a few laps you will almost explode with pump afterwards.  try to switch up the rep range once in a while, or use supersets for better pump.

i suggest you vary your rep range anywhere from 3 reps 30+ reps instead of always hitting the same 6 reps.  don't let your muscle settle into a comfort rep zone :)

I appreciate the advice, but I am way more concerned about hyperplasia and building plywood as muscles rather than hypertrophy, which just builds balloons as muscles. You can still put decent size on while doing lower reps. I look to my diet for building size, not my workout program. If I am not putting size on, it is a result of not eating enough, not what I am doing in the gym. This is all personal experience for me. BTW I trail run all of the time in bare feet which gives me a killer workout that is real fun. I am over doing things that are not fun for me. If your workouts are not fun, what is the point? I must say I do do the 20 rep squat every once in a while, which is great. I also could care less about bench anymore, what do you think of benching man? I am also not concerned about my pump either because I get pumps very easily. If I do 1 set of weighted pullups my biceps and back are at a full pump with blood engorged veins. I speculate that eating raw red meat helps with this.

Sunday:

Weighted Chins:  3x7 with 70lbs (full ROM)
Overhead Press:  3x6 with 125lbs
Deadlift:              3x5 with 265lbs (slowly working back up with good form/ trying not to strain my back)

High reps dont work for me as I am sort of an ectomorph as well. But thanks again man.

58
Hate to say it guys but I am bailing on this pet food thing because I simply enjoy eating my muscle meat in its purest form. Eating ground meat is okay but not as enjoyable. I now eat 1.5lbs chuck roast per day, .5lbs of slankers suet, and .5lbs of organs from liver, kidney, adrenals, brain, lung, etc... I am blessed to have an AV rawsome food club 45 minutes away so I am taking advantage of it.

why not wear something like vibram five fingers ?

i run on pavement for practical reasons - because if i ever have to run in real life it is likely to be on pavement.

Sometimes I do sometimes I dont, depends on how Im feeling. I like to do the barefoot thing sometimes to toughen up my feet more than vibrams would.

« on: March 30, 2011, 08:49:41 am »
My friends and I used to argue about this topic all the time and we came to this conclusion: Diet is the foundation of health, exercise is just a tool used to gain a particular physical advantage. You cannot have successful workouts without successful dieting, but you can successfully diet without working out. Diet should always come first.

Diet and sleep prepare us for working out. Exercise should actually come last and should be considered the least importane. Exercise wont cure you of disease. People give exercise too much credit. Every smart strength athlete I know works out less and eats/rests more. The smart trainer emphasizes all parts of their life in order to achieve success. IMO it is a 3 part process: Diet, Exercise, Rest/recoup.

We should also compare sleep, but then everyone knows that is essential.

Does anybody else like that RAW type of workout when you run barefoot through the woods stepping on prickers, sticks, rocks and in mud/dirt and get all dirty. Jumping over logs and climbing vines and shit. Straight up primal workout. I did one of these for the first time the other day and felt like a new man. My feet hurt from prickers and stepping on rocks, but not in a bad way. I felt tougher physically and mentally. Its cool not worrying about running through prickers and just letting yourself get cut up. That really makes me laugh at all the people who avoid prickers at all costs. I digress, anyway, this is a sick workout and its nice to get some fresh air and get all dirty outside once in a while.

the calf can either be trained by ECCENTRIC contraction which occurs ONLY when you run ( and i mean RUN, not jog ).  or they can be trained by continuous overload ( hours at a time ) like hiking some mountains for the entire day for example.  you can't build calves in the gym - not possible.  this is my own theory but i know i am right.

You are absolutely right. Unless you are a bodybuilder taking steroids, but even then they still do a lot of incline treadmill walking. My favorite calf work is anything done barefoot. Primarily sprinting and walking barefoot up hills.

the range of motion is wrong.  just because it hits the right muscles doesn't mean it takes them through the right range of motion.  you don't get full contraction ( in chest and shoulders ) on the top and you overstretch ( risking injury ) on the bottom.  with cables i can adjust the range of motion until its just right depending on how i do them.

I def agree with you that some of the range of motion is wrong in dips, but that is why intelligent people do them correctly. Only go down to where the back of your triceps are parallel with the floor and you wont risk injury. I think dips is a great exercise, but def not the best.

pioneer, actually what neone wrote was half decent(the jabs AT alpha males, were not...they are victims of the system to we must remember)

i do not think wanting to make more children is the most horrendous idea but i agree that over population is just another unsustainable practice...i mean honestly i am scared for the world I will live in in 10 years, do i really want to bring someone into that? is it possible for me to spend my energy shaping a world i would want to bring children into and raising a child and keeping healthful enough to continue being beneficial??  i mean these are honest questions and i think they are very realistic for our times...i often worry that if i do not have children soon i will not be able to, but i would really like the world to be a much nicer future for them..i am not sure............what i do know is  that its best to be in control of ones mating urges regardless of marital status, financial status, health status, etc. and to always keep the future of yourself, your children, your communities and environment in mind because all of these elements influence who you are and how well your experience upon this earth is............

Good points, and I like your enthusiasm, but remember the notion you are using is to not reproduce BECAUSE the world sucks; that somehow your kin will live worse off later because it sucks today. Times change. Remember the depression. Who would've wanted to have kids in that. For one, they couldnt afford them, and two, they thought their kids might grow up in a poor environment, but, they didnt. Times change, we adapt, things happen, and while I dont agree with some of neone's points I do agree that some kind of inevitable cataclysmic event will happen that will wipe out a good amount of our race. But my point is that right now we cannot do a damn thing about it so why not reproduce, and raise good kids. We could be having a debate about having a couple kids per family over here on the west side, while on the east side, they are pumping out 7 kids per family in Libya and Kenya. Its all bullshit. Just worry about yourself and live your life the way you want to live it. Dont get sucked into the ideas of those yuppy environmentalists that purport that sex is the problem.

Im not telling you to have less sex or anything.  If you're with a partner and condoms isnt necessary then you can always use the methods that my wife and i use, which is combining 'Family Planning' method with withdrawl and neem seed oil.  You can still have a fulfilling sensual sex life while greatly increasing the odds of not conceiving.

But I dont actually expect people to expand their caring bubble outside of their own circles and i fully expect the world to run itself into the ground long before people realize they need to come together intellectually.

I think a lot of you dont get that you're still all part of 'the system'.  You either get your food from it, or get your food from people who are a part of it. So once it starts going to shit and the prices go up, you're going to find yourselves hungry. No, other people arent going on raw paleo diets.. but as soon as they're having REAL trouble getting food, those hearts i buy for $1.50 a lb are going to be looking pretty good.

And Pioneer, a zebra being killed relatively quickly and eaten for food is NOT THE SAME kind of suffering that a single mother with two kids and six jobs has to go through. (because the zebra dies and cannot learn from its suffering... haha)
Your dumbass thinking would mean that somebody who was locked in a cage and raped every day for 10 years is a better person because they had to 'suffer' more.. right? or is that not what you meant, and what you were really saying is that adversary and challenges builds character, mabye a little pain... but to say that the world has to SUFFER? what kind of sadistic shit is that?  Better tell your kids to sleep outside in the rain because all that suffering they're going to do, they'll thank you for later.

I think you guys want to have your cake, and eat it too.  You all go on about being true paleo and stuff, and fucking and breeding are paleo and since im a !!REAL ALHPA MALE!! i can do whatever the fuck i want to!!  but dont realise you're not living in paleo times, and the rules have changed, and you cant just go and 'DO WHATEVER I WANT!' (because you're a badass alpha male) because you're fucking it all up.  You neuter your dogs because they are hella paleo and 'do whatever the fuck they want' and can understand that an unchecked animal population is not a good idea, but fail to take a look at ourselves and mabye instead of having to cut our sex organs out, we could just.. you know.. be smart.

Wow, I cant even comprehend what you are trying to say because, not only is your writing atrocious, but you are just mumbling shit for the sake of arguing and throwing some f words in there and alpha shit to seem cool. The way you are talking about yourself is not alpha. The alpha does not need to prove he is already alpha, the alpha already is alpha and is secure with himself. Going on forums behind your computer acting all macho and calling yourself alpha and such is only feeding into your own insecurities. None of us here know you and do not care about whether you are alpha or not.

1 - you could beat the **** out of him ( martial arts )
2 - you could outrun him ( running )
3 - you could outswim him ( swimming )
4 - you could outclimb him ( hiking, climbing )

but you certainly couldn't use any WEIGHTS let alone MACHINES ( nautilus etc ) to do it.

I think I missed the part where you said that you absolutely need strength and muscle mass to be proficient in any of the above mentioned. The stronger, bigger martial artist is the better martial artist. The stronger climber is the better climber, etc... And so you think strength training and increasing muscle mass plays no part in kicking someones ass or climbing a mountain? I have personal experience in this because I always get my ass kicked by brown belts in jiu jitsu, until a weak, scrawny brown belt went against me, and I annhialated him. I am only a white belt and this guy was almost my weight, but weak and scrawny and I out "strengthed" him in every situation as a result of years of lifting. This strength is not applicable to real life?

We're not talking about using weights or machines in real life, where did you get that notion? Weights and good eating are always going to be the best way to increase muscle mass, period.

dips are a garbage exercise by the way - my condolences to those of you who perform them.

chinup is the best exercise that you can do in the gym - they make you do chin ups in any army.

deadlift isn't bad, but you have to not go overboard with deadlifting.  your leg workout must be about 90% running and 10% deadlifts, not more.

i was in the gym today.  i had the same workout i always do ( when i am in the gym that is, which is about once a week ).  first i ran on the treadmill ( it is raining outside ) for about half a mile at 9 mph.  then i did some power cleans, some chin ups, some standing presses ( with dumbbells ) and some cable crossovers ( flys ) for chest.

i do cable crossover in place of push ups.  push up of course is of course a staple exercise in the military ( along with running, swimming and chinups ) but between bench press, pushups and dips for me i always had best results with cable crossovers because unlike most people i actually know how to do them.

anyway i apologize for posting all this in the wrong thread - it just kinda happened this way.

You are just rudely giving us your conjecture with no scientific evidence to back up anything you say. You're doing bodybuilder chest flyes and talking shit on dips? I must say I agree with a lot of your points. Specifically your strong love for chin ups, but hold the personal views on exercises. If somebody wants to be a bodybuilder on this forum, who the hell cares? This is just us logging our workout information. I basically use this as a journal.

I am digressing, but anyway I agree that military training is some of the best functional training that can be done and very useful. However, military training is not necessarily the best training and is not based on science. The common man would not want to participate in military training in full extent and if you do I commend you. Reason being is that the catabolic hormone cortisol is drammatically risen with all that excessive training and lowers male androgens (opposite of what you want). How many times have you seen a muscular guy come back from boot camp scrawny? I've seen this plenty of times in my life, and sure it may be as a result of functional training, but is it really optimal, is it really healthy to lose your muscle mass and sex drive as a result of excess cortisol levels?

Don't talk shit on dips unless you know what you are talking about. In physiology it was proven by scientists that you only need 2 exercises to work the entire body. Chin ups with shoulder width grip was the first, which works 70% and dips was the other, which works the other 30%. If you do those 2 exercises, you will work your whole torso.

How can you talk smack on dips and not even realize their absolutely applicable functionality? Think about it, if you are in somebody else's guard (in jiu jitsu or in real life) you can easily do a guard pass with the help of dip strength. Doing heavy weighted dips helped me pass people's guard with ease in my jiu jitsu classes, and that is absolutely functional.

As long as everybody works the two largest muscle groups (legs and back) you'll be okay.

Max, you speak of human suffering as if it is something that can be controlled. Human and animal suffering is a part of life. A zebra being mauled by a lion, thats suffering, a single mother with two jobs raising a family, that's suffering. Sure some suffering is bad, but others is absolutely great and it molds our characters. I would not be the man I am today if I did not suffer and overcome my own problems. Suffering gives us the ability to make our lives better, and have a sense of personal pride.

Your argument actually seems to contradict itself quite a bit and if you study philosophy, you will see that this whole population argument has already been put to rest. The reason is that if we went along with your purported views to lower the world population to a "stable" number, how long before people begin getting pissed and begin to suffer because they can only have a set number of kids. If I was told I could only have 2 kids to replace me and my wife, I would suffer as a result. You are missing a huge point that people suffer when they are told what to do. People want and should want to live their own lives and make their own decisions. Driving this point home, there will never be an end to all human suffering, and there really shouldnt be, suffering makes us human.

Also, if we lower the population by none other than murder, that would cause plenty of suffering. And if we did achieve a lower population by murder, how long till we have to murder people again and lower the population once more?

If you look at the current fertility rates, you will see that we already are a dying race. Our epigenetics are all screwed up and every generation gets worse and worse. Basically what effects you will effect your grand kids and so forth. Doris Rapp, the world's leading pediatrician studies soy formula and its effects on young infants. Soy formula and other estrogenic substances fed to babies are not only causing our young men to go into andropause earlier, but also making men homosexual. Japan needs over 100,000 in vitro fertilizations every year just to have kids. Other countries are just as bad. I live in the US and am well educated of the birth rate. The US birth rate is currently 1.9, which is not enough to replace ourselves. Combine this with the fact that 15-25% of these births were of illegal immigrants, and counted in studies as legal US citizens as per the 14th ammendment, you will see that we are in a birth rate/fertility shithole. Check out the information the CIA currently has on population, the birth rates of higher income nations are lowering. It seems that the higher income nations are in trouble and will be replaced by individuals from lower income nations.

Yeah, that was a bold sweeping comment and it wasnt meant personally or to be taken as a literal truth. Its just my sense of humor, how everyone thinks they're a perfect specimen producing flawless offspring haha. (or mabye you still wont find that funny... im not talking about *YOU PERSONALLY*, i am being general.)
When you use withdrawl method coupled with condoms, you're pretty serious about not having children.
I have two siblings, younger and older.

I dont see if you were having a child for the 'right' reasons, that you would be 'unhappy' with it..  mabye i would have to have a child myself before i understood the disapointment that your first might bring, where you might get luckier on your second and they wont shame you as much.... haha.

But seriously... could you imagine what would happen if your entire town started eating a paleo diet? You would soon realize what i mean when i say that your diet is a privilege.  You and your family can eat 10 pounds of animal product a day because other families are living off of grain.  There is not enough quality food to go around, so if we already have a problem (what is it, 1/4 of the worlds population is malnurished?) and you guys on here are saying everybody should go ahead and have 4 children (and in 20 years those 4 children have the 'right' to have another 4 kids... etc..) what are you thinking? unless you're not, and you're just thinking about yourselves and your own families and aren't thinking about the big picture (which you are a part of)..
But then again, you're just being PALEO right?  Every small tribe for themselves.....

You make a valid point and no, we are not stupid idiots who do not look at the big picture. Sure, people eat grain, which makes more meat available to us, but if you think that we couldnt possibly supply all of the humans on this planet with plenty of meat every day you are highly mistaken. This is just another fallacy purported by those who think that meat is bad for you. When you say we could not possibly have everyone on the planet eating meat, what exactly do you mean? When you make a claim, you need to explain yourself fully. If you mean that we do not have enough natural resources and space to have everybody eating meat, well I just have to laugh at you. We can fit everyone on the planet in texas and still have plenty of living space. Area of Texas is 268,581 square miles. Assuming 6-7 billion people, that's 22,340 per square mile; this means each person gets 1248 square feet, which is about the size of a respectable apartment. Even if we had a ratio of 1:10 grassfed eating cattle to people, we could still fit plenty of animals for humans to eat at least 2lbs of meat per day.

You ask us what we are thinking, well to be quite honest, OURSELVES. The current notion in contemporary society of especially higher income nations is that we need to think about everybody else, even though 85% of the globe consists of lower income nations that are poor. Anybody that lives their life making accommodations for everybody else is not a true human, but an accommodator. If you want to be healthy, you better damn well start thinking about yourself and your family and eat plenty of meat, rather than thinking about "everybody else." Who cares about everybody else, care about yourself. Everybody else is still going to be miserable either way.

One of the biggest problems in health today is the lack of recognition and application of self help. Everybody is so concerned about the environment and what is politically correct.

To bring this argument about alpha males and alpha females home, is that alpha males/ females get what they want, period. They rarely make accommodations for others, others make accommodations for them. If they dont like a job, they find a better one. If they are not in a good relationship, they move on. I guess being an alpha male today means not being a pussy like everybody else who conforms to the masses. Alpha people do things the way they like to do it, thats it. No its not about squatting 500 or getting all of the ladies. To be alpha is to get what you set your sights on.

I think the world has enough people already, and as awesome as you think your genetics are and what a boon to the world your offspring will be.. they're not, they're just even more mouths to feed and add to the already overpopulated world. I think people should only have one child that you put everything into, that would be a responsible thing to do, i would think.

Classic anti life agenda, prob pro abortion and contraception as well. So many people nowadays are just like you, so faaarrr out on the left wing, thinking that the population should be controlled. If you don't like it, get the fuck off the planet and take some "responsibility" (according to you). As for the rest of us, we'd rather enjoy heterosexual sex that actually feels good and have the ability to procreate and produce successful offspring.
