I was looking into those for a while now. Thinking about which plant I'm going to put in my student room.

I think such plants might live longer and be more efficient if they are "grounded", with an conductive rod or something.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Ground-Any-Plants-For-Optimal-Results-In-Growth-Ra/step2/The-proof-of-the-puddng/

"The idea is that when you pot a plant or remove it from the soil you have disconnected it from the earth and all the negative electrons the plant needs. When you pot a plant especially in plastic pots, it becomes insulated and starts picking up the AC electricity in the air causing growth stunting.
To stop the stunting you need to reconnect the plant with its natural environment - the earth."

Some commercialised products: http://earthandgrow.com

As a matter of fact, "grounding" yourself also has health benefits, according to some.

Fair enough, but  I live on the 1st floor(which means 2nd floor in UK terms). Ah, and in the US, it seems it would be called the 3rd floor!

We all go on about diet here but we often forget that there are other ways we can become less healthy. Not just via smoking/drinking alcohol/taking drugs/not doing exercise, but we can also become ill via air-pollution. Car-exhaust-fumes, like cigarette-smoke  contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic amines  in them which are (slow) toxins that affect human health. These 2 toxins are also created via cooking.Granted, cooked-food-consumers would be worse affected than us but I would imagine that most of us would be negatively affected to some extent by living near well-used roads.

Bear in mind, this is not only about air-pollution. Simply looking at green Nature  improves  cognition:-

Apparently, even just looking at photos of Nature helps improve cognition, so those who cannot very well bring potted plants to the work-place can just bring postcards etc.

Don't forget the degradation of plastics and paint in homes which produces all kinds of bad hormone-disrupting stuff. Apparently some house plants can absorb some of those. Anyways, it's always good to let fresh air in everyday or so.

This thread should go in the "Health" section IMO. There's already enough topics in the off-topic section as it is.
