Because of the dodgy Out of Africa theory,  all the prehistory books portrayed Neanderthals as dumb, ape-like brutes who could not speak. In the 80s, when I first read about Neanderthal burial customs etc., they seemed always way too complex to be nothing more than apes.

The out of africa theory is mostly dead.
Multi-regional is in.
Multi species.
Most of us today are hybrids of those multi species.

There is no 1 human race.
The powers that be are trying to mix us all to blender into 1 race.
Keeping pockets of pure breeds might be a good idea.
