Neanderthal sticky thread

Since palaeo-anthropologists routinely focus on the Neanderthals, here is a permanent thread on the subject...

Cause and effect are distant in time and space in complex systems, while at the same time there’s a tendency to look for causes near the events sought to be explained. Time delays in feedback in systems result in the condition where the long-run response of a system to an action is often different from its short-run response. — Ronald J. Ziegler

The irony - past artists would routinely portray Neanderthals as hulking, shuffling apelike types, yet it turns out that Neanderthals stood straighter than humans and could walk far further. Realistically, Neanderthals should be shown as to the right of humans, in the usual "ascent of man" portraits, as it's clear they were more advanced in a number of ways.

More evidence that Neanderthals were not more primitive than modern humans, indeed quite the reverse:-

I don't know. We had tools for hunting and everything. We are not primed for sprinting or endurance running. We are primed to think to obtain our food.

I wonder if cannibalism led to the growth of bigger hominid brains? It certainly seems to have been widespread in the Palaeolithic era.
