Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Food combining, especially fruit
« on: February 07, 2016, 10:52:15 am »
I find that certain fruits can really cause digestion problems (cramping, gas) if I combine them wrong. Persimmons are the biggest offender, I can only eat them next to bananas, honey, or dates, NO other foods. Dates mix well with anything for me, and bananas mix OK (not great) with most foods. However, bananas don't mix well at all with watery fruits like mango or oranges. Papaya is the only exception. Papaya mixes well with pretty much anything. It's a good buffer between non-agreeing foods.

Health / Fatty wild fish and vitamin D
« on: February 07, 2016, 10:46:11 am »
I found that I had vitamin D deficiency back in 2008 by experimenting with different supplements. I found that it helped reduce skin problems (I have chronic mild dermatitis and dandruff), tooth plaque, tooth sensitivity, and insomnia, as well as improving my general mood and temperament.

I have found that, as long as I am eating plenty of fatty fish every day, these symptoms don't return. I can go months without needing to supplement. However, they return after just a couple of days if I skip fatty fish.

I had assumed that the levels of vitamin D in fish were too low to really do much, but I think the fact that they are in whole food form increases their usefulness. Certainly the total amount is much lower in fish than in my supplement pills, but the fish works just as well, perhaps even better, in my experience.

Health / Repetitive Strain and carpal tunnel syndrome--how to beat them
« on: December 11, 2015, 01:33:02 am »
I have struggled on and off with these problems since college. I am a percussionist as a hobby/side-job, and I got my degree in percussion performance. As a result, I did a LOT of drumming around that age. Typing has also aggravated the problem. For many years the problem went away. It returned briefly for a few months, but now I have figured out how to beat it.

The RSI problems have returned twice, both when I was consuming lots of raw dairy plus bone meal. However, as soon as I started taking magnesium supplements this time, it went away.

Obviously, RSIs are an inflammation response. Different people have different amounts of natural inflammation response, so not everybody will get them to the same degree. However, for those of us who are prone, a solution has to exist. I believe a great deal of the inflammation response is actually to calcium crystals in the tendons, etc.. Calcium deposits easily in the body and has a very spiky surface. As a result, it tends to cause damage to the inside of the arteries, leading to blocked arteries. Anyone who has ever been cut by a sharp oyster shell knows how sharp and spiky calcium tends to be.

So how do we beat the problem?

1. Magnesium. It's something most people are deficient in, and it's calcium's antagonist in the body. I supplement with it from time to time, but there are foods that are rich in it.

2. Vitamin D, whether from Sun, fatty fish, or supplements. It moves calcium where it's supposed to go in the body.

3. Correct posture and movement, like the Gokhale Method. This won't completely solve the problem, but it helps, and it's generally useful for any physical activity.

I think another reason that calcium causes RSIs is because it's used by the body to contract the muscles. Magnesium is used for the opposite, and if your balance is too far toward calcium, those muscles in the affected areas can never fully relax and recover.

Health / Lack of boogers on raw paleo
« on: December 06, 2015, 11:06:42 am »
Twice in my life I have accidentally lucked out and just stopped having any boogers at all, for a period of time. That means none at all, at all.

The first was in 2005, while I was doing a lot of sungazing. I was also eating some seawater precipitate at that time. This lasted for several months, until one day I ate some dried fruit, from a Chinese grocery, and the boogers have been back for 10 years....until Thursday.

Thursday morning I woke up after a night of little sleep (because of someone else keeping me awake) with severe-ish liver pain and little energy. I was tired most of the day, and ate little until the pain subsided. However, I noticed there were no boogers that morning, and I've had no boogers for 3 days now.

The only thing I've been really eating differently was some deer liver, heart, and fat. I've had those in the past without this effect, though.

Any ideas? I'm not aware of any commonality, dietary or supplements or anything, between 2005 and today. I've not sungazed recently.

Hot Topics / I've been experimenting with coffee
« on: November 18, 2015, 11:40:04 am »
I know it's neither raw nor paleo, but I don't drink it every day, I generally only have it 4 or 5 days a week. It used to give me a little acid reflux, but no more. I have noticed that it can drain the adrenals if I'm not careful, but there's a recent study finding that coffee drinkers live longer, and are much less likely to get certain neurological disorders. ADD runs in my family, and it definitely helps me focus.

I personally have found that mixing foods, even raw foods, is more disrupting to my "food intuition" than eating lightly cooked foods. Usually the next meal after mixing foods is hard for me to figure out what my body needs to eat.  On the other hand, I don't notice much effect on my food intuition from eating lightly cooked foods. Any thoughts or experiences you guys have to share?

I've been investigating Esther Gokhale's method for several years now, and I've come to the conclusion that she's really got Paleo human movement/posture nailed down pretty well.  She studied the posture and movement of traditional peoples for many years, and has a book, DVD, some youtube videos, and a series of 6 lessons that she teaches.  Here's her website:

gokhalemethod.com

I would like to start a sub-forum about her work, as well as human posture and movement in a general sense.  It's been a passion of mine for many years. Feel free to share thoughts.

General Discussion / Monsanto is paying people to spam Reddit

Monsanto is paying people to spread lies and misinformation on Reddit.

Let them come here.  I will ban them.  And ban them.  And ban them.  And ban them. And they will destroy their credibility by doing what they are doing.

Let's not forget, they spend 6 million dollars a year on lobbyists in Washington, D.C.. This company cannot be trusted anymore.

General Discussion / Need a bunch of testimonials on high fruit/low fat
« on: February 24, 2012, 02:55:09 pm »
I've been having a big argument over at the forums at rawfoodsupport.com.  DurianRider trolls like a motherfucker over there, half the members hate the shit out of him, but he has a few supporters.  Several members are eating 80/10/10 and claiming great results.

One of the posters is asking me for testimonials about fruit-eating and 80/10/10.  Positive, negative, whatever.  Detailed is good, pictures are also good.

If you're like PaleoPhil and simply can't eat fruit, then give the symptoms that fruit causes.  (Yes, Phil, I know that fermented honey has allowed you to eat fruit again. :) )

So let's hear about your fruit-eating and what it has brought you.

Health / Clams make my nails stronger and healthier
« on: July 26, 2011, 03:45:14 am »
I have noticed that eating clams, particularly the smaller varieties, helps my fingernails and toenails to be stronger and look much healthier. I don't know why, but it definitely works.

General Discussion / I was in an oyster-eating contest today
« on: June 19, 2011, 10:45:57 am »
It was a last-minute thing, the entry fee was $5, and I got to eat 2 dozen excellent quality oysters.  I came close to winning, but only got second place.  I ate 2 dozen oysters in less than 1 minute.   :)  Are you guys impressed?  :D

Like many of you, I have had my share of health problems with fruit, mainly sore teeth and anxiety attacks. However, besides eating only high-quality fruit (please see my sticky thread in this forum about Brix and health), I have found that supplementing with bone meal and healing clays like Terramin to be VERY helpful if reducing these problems.

I have found that taking bone meal or clay with the fruit is very helpful, particularly with sore teeth. I will often have 1/4 teaspoon of bone meal after every 2-3 fruits, or even between every fruit. Some people are not suiting to a VLC or ZC diet, and I find this an excellent way, along with choosing high-quality fruit, to avoid the strange health problems that fruits often seem to cause.

Questions? :)

General Discussion / Brix and health
« on: June 01, 2011, 11:43:49 am »
I am going to do a series of threads/posts  on Brix, plants, and health. I will accept questions, but please, 1 question per post, and no more than 2-3 questions daily.

You can find a lot of good info over at Rex Harrill's site, http://crossroads.ws/brix/index.htm, but I'm going to summarize it here, and take questions, and add my own thoughts as well.

A Brix meter, properly called a refractometer, measures the total amount of dissolved solid matter in a liquid. Winemakers and orange growers often use Brix readings to decide when to harvest their crops. Once a grape reaches a certain Brix, it is harvested.  Orange growers that produce oranges used for commercial orange juice are paid more for higher Brix readings, and they don't harvest until their fruit reaches a certain Brix level. The reason is that the taste of the higher Brix oranges is much, much better.

Plants with Brix readings above 12 generally are not attacked by juice-sucking insects. I believe that this Brix level of 12 is also one at which many fruits become health-giving rather than health-damaging.  In my experience, my health is much better when I refuse to eat fruits with Brix lower than 12.

Some cattle farmers will also pay a higher premium for higher-Brix hay, because it is much better for the health of their cows.

There are a number of ways to improve Brix in plants, including organic soil supplements, foliar feeding, and choosing plant varieties with lower yield.

I generally recommend using a Brix meter on all fruits/veggies that you will eat, and avoiding low-Brix plants whenever you can. It is possible to find high-Brix produce, with time and effort.  In some places, the local fruit is always high Brix, because of excellent local soil quality. For the rest of us, we have to grow our own, or find sources of fruit that are high Brix.

Questions are welcome. Please feel free to read Rex Harrill's site.

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Question about weight-lifting
« on: April 26, 2011, 10:16:34 pm »
Hi folks,

I've had plenty of experience with exercise and martial arts, but have never bothered to do any amount of weight-lifting.

I knew a guy from the old rawpaleo yahoo group who had been trying a new method for a while.

He said he would lift a very heavy weight (like in a military press, or bench press) to maximum extension, and then just hold it there for several minutes.  He said that keeping the muscles still encourages cross connections between muscle fibers, which would increase strength as much or more than actually moving the weight up/down. Any thoughts? He said this wouldn't increase bulk, but it would increase strength.

In this thread I hope to include ALL causes of crooked teeth.  So far we have

1. Vitamin K-2 deficiency.  K-2 helps widen the skull, jaw, and probably ribcage.  If the jaw isn't wide enough, the teeth don't have enough room.

2. Calcium and Vitamin D deficiency.  The bones won't form correctly without these.  Magnesium and phosphorus also play a very small role here.

3. Individual genetics.  You can inherit a small jaw and large teeth, resulting in a increased chance of crooked teeth.  You can also inherit a problem, larger or smaller, with processing/using Vitamin K, Vitamin D, etc..

4. Racial genetics.  The longer a particular population is on grains, cooked food, etc., the smaller their teeth/jaws get.  This takes thousands of years.  Some groups (notably the Australian Aborigines) have very large teeth/jaws, since they have been on cooked/modern food like grains for only a very short time. Other groups, like East Asians, have smaller teeth/jaws (and even lack wisdom teeth, in many cases) because they have been eating grains and cooked food for a very long time. You can see pictures of relative tooth sizes in Dr Price's book. The Aborigines have very large teeth, whereas individuals from other populations often had teeth less than half that size.

5. Jaw exercise.  If you're eating mush that doesn't require chewing during your growing-up years, then your jawbones will not be as large, dense, or well developed as someone who is constantly chewing on tough things.

I put those in rough order of importance, although remember that's only rough order.

Any thoughts?

I have looked all over the internet, but I can't find it anywhere.  I am mainly interested in the vitamin A and D content, as well as the fat/protein/carb content.  I have been eating about 4 ounces of it 5 days a week for about 3 months now, and I would like to know its vitamin content.  I have been eating so much of it because I can get it very cheap, like $9 US a pound. It's fresh, not frozen.

Off Topic / Check out this crazy clip about raw meat eating
« on: August 22, 2009, 11:22:58 pm »
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ppkoy0M4OA

This guy is great.  :)

This is a trashy TV show where people switch families for a couple of weeks.  I think it's neat that they found a raw meat eating family.

I had a pretty terrible lipid profile on my last blood work (although everything else was great, my liver enzymes were right for the first time in 10 years).  There is a pretty severe history of heart disease in my family.  I'm not 100% sure what caused it, it was either:

1. job stress
2. lots of raw bacon fat (I doubt it, but it was preserved with a little salt and sugar)
3. raw chocolate (again, doubting it, just throwing it out there)
4. Adderall (which is very hard on the heart, like all amphetamines)

I don't work at the same job, I don't eat much of the raw bacon fat anymore, I've pretty much cut out the raw chocolate, and I'm off the Adderall and on something else (a non-stimulant, and yes, I am very ADD, and it helps me)

I have been eating more fruit, partially because

1.  it's really hot this summer
2.  It doesn't seem to mess with my head as much now, no panic attacks, etc.
3.  I think it might help with the lipid profile, i.e., reduce chances of heart disease

I have also been eating a lot of dolomite and bone meal.  I have actually found that those two things really stop the fruit from damaging my teeth.  I put a little bone meal or dolomite under my tongue right after eating, and swish it around for 5 or 10 minutes, and then do it again.  I do this for probably 30 minutes to 3 hours after each meal, and it really has helped my teeth.  I don't plan to keep on eating this much fruit, but the dolomite and bone meal have really, really helped my teeth a lot.

Hot Topics / My experience with vitamin D supplements
« on: July 18, 2009, 01:21:22 am »
I started taking the Now brand softgels about 10 months ago.  I have taken anywhere from 1000 IU to 10,000 IU daily.  My most recent blood test showed a blood level of 92.3, (and I was taking about 10,000 IU daily for about 2 weeks before that), so now I take about 1000-3000 IU daily.  I actually noticed that I feel better when my blood levels are not quite that high.

Here's a list of things that vitamin D has helped me with

1.  sleeping through the night without waking.
2.  I don't grind my teeth at night nearly as much
3.  I am much more calm
4.  my tooth sensitivity issues are greatly improved

I also tried the Carlson Vitamin D drops, but they appear to have no effectiveness, that I can tell.  I've tried one or two other types, but the Now brand definitely gets the job done.

I used to be very anti-supplement, but this has convinced me that moderate supplementation can be good, maybe.

I think it's much easier to get Vitamin A from food than Vitamin D.  Liver alone can give you enough Vitamin A, and when you add palm oil, you've got plenty.

I really think my body does not process vitamin D normally.  I had rickets when I was a child (I have noticeably curved shinbones), and the fact that it helped me in so many ways as soon as I started taking it (within 1 or 2 days) really makes me think I don't process or use it normally, or something.   But whatever.

Questions?

Right in the middle of a very routine telephone conversation with a US supplier of grass-fed meats I find out that a doctor has to fax them a prescription so I can get some thyroid.  Apparently it's a law here.  LOL

Does anyone have any suggestions?  I emailed Dr. Tom Cowan.  Maybe he will help me out.  I don't feel like educating any of my local doctors enough so they will do this, nor do I feel like going to the trouble/expense of setting up and going to an appointment with one of them just for this.

Are any of you reading my little debate with Alex Stanley?  Are you finding it entertaining at all?  I fear I may have gone over the top with my last 2 posts.  He's probably about to get personally insulted or insulting, because he has no logical foundation for what he is saying.  If it were a swordfight, he'd be like the Black Knight in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail",  who gets his arms and legs chopped off, saying "I'll bite your legs off!"
