General Discussion / A fluke in my pancreas
« on: October 12, 2008, 06:58:30 am »
Tonight for dinner I was eating raw pancreas and I came across a pancreatic fluke (eurytrema pancreaticum). Should I be worried about eating eggs? I have never worried about parasites in raw meat, but it is weird coming across them while eating. Weird to, since they are grass fed and finished. Although I don't really know the specks of flukes. Any thoughts?

General Discussion / Strange reaction eating spleen
« on: September 02, 2008, 06:59:17 am »
On Wednesday for dinner I was eating raw spleen. This is the first time I had the spleen. About 15min into eating it I started to get a severe pain in my chest(not like heart burn or indigestion) The pain was so bad I had to lay down. I got up frequently to get some water, but the pain continued until I got to sleep hours later. When I woke up the next day my neck and lower back were in so much pain I could barely move, my kidneys were also very sore. The next day however the chest pain was gone. The day after that (Friday) I still had the kidney pain, but the muscle tightness in my neck and back were gone. On Friday I also developed a fever. Saturday the fever was gone and the kidney pain was minimal. Today I am fine.

I have been searching and searching for what could have happened....with no luck. My first thought was that maybe something naturally in the spleen caused this reaction, but that seemed less likely the more I searched. Then I considered that it may have been a chemical residue left from either the washing or the inspection process. There was a taste to the spleen that seemed unnatural I don't know how to describe it (and yes I tasted it before the chest pain) If I had to compare it to something it would be menthol.

The only thing I found that would have been added by the USDA inspector is lactic acid, which does not match up. Does anyone have thoughts or input on this?

General Discussion / Testicles
« on: August 20, 2008, 07:58:21 am »
Does anyone eat these regularly and or enjoy them? I ate my first pair of cow oysters and I see now why they are called that. I enjoy a lot of different organs and glands on a regular basis, but testicles were a little hard to get down. Are they all about the same lamb, goat, bison etc.? I will probably have them again just to have assortment and I can't help but feel that maybe they will supply nutrients to my own testicles/sex organs. I have heard about people eating them in order to increase libido, but I don't know if that is true.

I have been on the zero carb carnivore diet for about 3 months now and it has been soooooo hard to get good raw fat (I should mention all my food is eaten raw). I just got off the phone with another farmer who had no clue what suet was, and when I told him what it was he said he would ask the butcher, but that he usually gets laughed at for these requests.(last month I asked for blood, so he was a little hesitant to begin with.) It really is a shame, he has 2 healthy grass fed organic cows at the butcher and all those healthy fats, glands, and what not will all go to waste due to ignorance. I have a sheep farmer who I spoke to and had to email the details of what suet is, so maybe this weekend when I see him I will get some, altough he usually charges $12/lb. for anything besides muscle...and that is a lot for suet. Then another farmer I spoke with said that suet was not found in grass fed cows and when I said I had other sources he said that the cows must be getting grains.

This is what I currently have:
Each week I get about 10-15 lbs of marrow bones
Each month I get about 12 lbs of ground beef from cows on pasture for 6 years (it is very fatty)
I also have unlimited supply of high quality fresh raw butter. The thing is though that I want to eliminate all dairy and would prefer to get suet instead.

I know that slankers and us wellness has suet, but at this time I can't order on line to be delivered. I also like to buy my stuff locally, if I can.

Does anyone else have these troubles? What do you think about using raw butter on this diet?

General Discussion / Best piece of meat I have eaten
« on: July 24, 2008, 11:43:30 am »
I have been reading the posts on here for a while. This is my first post and I wanted to share my experience from today. One of the farmers I get my meat from had fresh chicken gizzards from pastured chickens butchered within the day. This is the first time I had this organ and I was blown away by the taste and freshness. The fat was still attached and there were even pieces of digested grass stuck to them. I am doing the raw carnivorous diet, but those grass pieces really gave them a nice flavor.
