Hot Topics / Massive health problems. Good bye raw paleo!
« on: June 22, 2013, 05:50:37 pm »
It's my duty to share my very disappointing experiences of the last months with you.

I got massive health problems on my raw paleo low carb diet. At the beginning I felt very energetic, strong, healthy and sometimes even euphoric. Unfortunately things went differently.

What have I eaten?

Mainly fruits, wild game meats and grass fed beef. 100.0% raw. Zero grain fed meat. Zero dairy. Wild fish and seafood 1-2 times per week. Low carb, high animal fat.  Main calories came from grass fed beef fat. Carb intake between 0 and 80 grams per day. Round about 75% of the meats were frozen.

What happened?

- I ended up in hospital for the first time in my life.
- massive inflammations in several parts of my body
- gastritis
- sharp pain in my colon
- diarrhea and bloating
- colonoscopies revealed inflammations of the appendix and the whole colon
- lab tests showed high levels of clostridium perfringens
- a colon tumor was found and removed
- huge inflammatory eczemas
- persistent eye infections
- extreme irritability and nervousness
- sometimes heart problems
- impaired glucose tolerance
- dental calculus

I started my raw food journey 13 years ago. Vegan diets as well as high fruit low fat raw paleo diets never caused such inflammations in my body. I believe that the colon tumor was a result of these inflammations. I felt very frustrated when I got the message. Unfortunately a fruit based raw paleo diet is no solution in the long-run. I have already damaged my skin, joints, teeth etc. too much on such a raw food diet. In my case all the inflammations were clearly caused by raw animal fats, beef fat and wild boar fat.

The interesting thing here is that the same fats do not cause inflammation, diarrhea and pain if I eat them cooked.

The inflammations became so aggressive that I needed cortisone. I'm now very slowly recovering on a cooked paleo low carb diet. Cooked vegetables have been very helpful in reducing inflammation. I can't digest raw broccoli and other hard vegetables. They irritate my gi tract. To be honest, I'm nevertheless still not "healed" from the idea of a raw food diet. Because, as we all know, a raw food diet is the way to eternal youth, immortality and paradise. Unfortunately fruits accelerated the aging process of my body like no other substance. Unfortunately raw grass fed animal fats gave me inflammations (Michael Eades has written about this problem), a tumor, eczemas and irritability. Unfortunately my body can't handle raw vegetables...

Good bye!

Van, you look very young for someone who must be at least in their 50's :)

YES, Van, tell us more about your story and your transition from a high sugar instincto diet to a raw paleo low carb diet.

Unfortuantely I spent over 20 years sneaking up on carrots and the result was not what was advertised by the bugs & bunnies folks.

LOL! Good to hear from you, Lex.

You have done a lot of research. What are your thoughts about folates and manganese and (theoretically) expected deficiencies on a meat based ZC diet. Even if we eat liver every day it's nearly impossible to reach the RDAs..

How much water do you drink in a day?

Sleeplessness is part of my life for more than 25 years. I tried everything, without success.

The only thing that works for me in this regard is a raw zero carb meat based diet. This diet lets me sleep like a baby, not always but very often.

I have a meter and I was shocked how bad  my laptop was.

Which EMF meter do you use? Could you recommend any brand?

It is about healing, and about what really works for everyone who has ever honestly tried it.
There is a recent post by someone who really needs to do rzc, but you have so intimidated people here that nobody dares mention the obvious answer to her  problem. Pemmican.

William, do you believe that cooked fats are better than raw fats? Or do you just assume that cooked fats are as good as raw fats in the sense that they are not "damaged" or harmful at all?

I've eaten the meat of bull calves, and didn't like it. Maybe because they were not steers?

Grassfed "Baby beef" is a hype in Switzerland. It always tastes like shit, imo. Even more drastical are the taste differences between very young wild boars (0 - 1 year old) and 2-3 year old wild boars.

As Rogue mentioned, it's just all about ROI in the farming business.

It makes sense to me that nature makes old animals much more flavourful.

the average cattle owner is 70 years old. Most of the old cattle fences are rotten and won't hold cattle anymore.

Good times for newcomers?

Sabertooth, have you thought about writing an e-book about your story, your healing process and raw paleo diets? You could sell this book on a special website, for example, like Aajonus..

It would be an very interesting read for many health seaking individuals.

We’ve got confused ever since the Neolithic era, or a bit before when we started to cook food. Our pre-fire ancestors were not that confused and animals in the wilderness aren’t either. Just like them, I’ve absolutely no idea neither about insulin levels, nor about of how much proteins I eat as well as no idea of how much protein is contained in the foods I eat.

Eating really raw paleo keep you away from confusion and thus you don’t need those contradictory dietitians and gurus advices.

No thanks, Iguana.

As far as I know eating "really raw paleo" means for you: Eating every single day piles of overbred sugary neolithic fruits that never existed in human history until very recently. It's a nice illusion, far away from "paleo". Instincto is long dead.

yes, raw since then, But, did do a year or two on Macrobiotics inbetween.

Wow, that's a very long time!

Either your avatar picture is very old or you look much much younger than your age.

How many years are you eating a raw paleo diet based on animal fats?

This is not the actual episode. My cousin found the original pilot that was somehow released on the web, there still no word on if an actual show will be aired. The interviews were cut to shreds and the editors put their own spin on the show, but overall they didn't portray me too badly.

Very professional! They produced a nice TV drama about your lifestyle. It's very smart to start the show with a roadkill shocker.

Little to nothing is said about the possible health benefits we can get from raw animal foods. But who expected this?

I hope you got a suitable amount of money from the producers..

So I wonder, why is Greg Ellis featured here so much in the last few days?

He's just one of many low carb bodybuilders. For me, it's fun to see the 180 degree contrary beliefs of the "experts". BTW: I don't see Ellis as an expert.

Caldwell Esselstyn is an real expert, imo, for example. He recommends a very high complex carb diet to all his heart patients and seems to be really successful. Bill Clinton is one example. One the other side of the spectrum there is Ron Rosedale who sees all glucose from food as more or less toxic...

Dr Ron Rosedale:

"You require no more than 45 to 50 g of protein per day and any extra would be detrimental. I would not have more than 15 g per meal as there is almost no way that you could utilize anything extra without just turning it into fuel."

Found on his website www.drrosedale.com.

Any comments?

The old question: How much protein?

Greg Ellis believes that at least 2.2 grams of protein per kg bodyweight are optimal for our immune system and overall health:

How old is Ron Rosedale? His photo on his website does not look youthful at all. That is why I feel skeptical about his diet theories. But if he is very aged in biological age, then I might give his theories another look.
His secretary told me that he is now 62 years old.

Here is a video with Ron Rosedale from last year:

Ron Rosedale, M.D.—The Deeper Roots of Health and Diet as Told by Our Ancestor’s Ancestors on Vimeo
Does he look younger than "normal" people at his age? Hmm.

I'm convinced that his concept contains a huge mistake. He says "only fat is free fuel". According to his book he seems to believe that ALL fats are ok, including unsaturated plant fats. PUFAs accelerate aging more than any other substance, imo. And then there are some absurd recipes in his book, for example baked almonds! Heated PUFAs age us even faster..

From my experience, his recommendation for protein intake is way too low.

In his last newsletter email my 'good friend' Greg Ellis wrote that his protein intake was as high as 400 grams per day. LOL!

He's overly optimistic when it comes to increasing one's life span due to keeping Leptin and Insulin levels controlled.   Protein intake is something I don't think he looks at necessarily as toxic, but more as how excess is converted to energy as opposed to repair and building, and thus the excess increases insulin and inflamation  etc.

He seems to be very theoretical in all his thoughts.

How can it be that many starch eaters reach a very high age?

Ron Rosedale believes that it is good to keep our insulin levels as low as possible. Endocrinologist Diana Schwarzbein believes that chronically too low insulin levels have adverse effects on our hormonal system and overall health. We are a confused species..

I find that Matt Monarch looks more and more like Gabriel Cousens.

I always have to laugh about his enema enthusiasm. If he really lives on nut butter with all the enzyme inhibitors plus tons of plant cellulose it's no surprise to me that he needs enemas several times a week.

Malnutrition.  He was iodine deficient, probably also selenium deficient and boron deficient.

... and possibly folate deficient.

But why selenium? Beef is full of Se afaik.

I share the opinion that large amounts of meat/protein eaten at one meal is toxic.  I spent several hours in consultation with Dr. Rosedale, and mentioned how the Bear ate and quantities.  He was very quick to give his opinion that Bear would have continuing cancers.    I think too often we look at carnivores, like lions, or wolves, and describe their gorging on meat as something that is good for us.  Rosedale is one of the few who continually points out that nature didn't intend for 'us' to live long extended life spans, but just long enough to pass along our knowledge and protection to our offspring.    In short he believes long healthy life spans for humans are a result of keeping blood sugars level and low, all the time.

Wow, very interesting! I tried to reach Ron Rosedale but he doesn't offer consulatation any more. At least most of the year. He seems to travel a lot.

Rosedale is VERY skeptical about protein intake. From my feeling he is overanxious. And don't forget that he usually thinks about cooked protein, like all others. Cooked meat feels indeed very very toxic in my body. It's completely impossible for me to eat more than small amounts of cooked animal protein. But raw meat feels OK and not toxic at all. Of course, this is just a feeling.

What was your impression of Ron Rosedale? I find his thoughts about longevity too pessimistic. BTW: Nora Gedgaudas seems to have absorbed Rosedales teachings par for par..
