General Discussion / Explaining to a SADieter why RPD is safe+better
« on: December 18, 2012, 02:48:06 pm »
Hey everyone. I'm composing info for why RPD is safe. I thought maybe it could be stickied, in the appropriate section of course.

And it could include things like, how grains and antibiotics lead to acid resistant strains of e.coli and other pathogenic strains of bacteria.

I just want a thread explaining why even though the meats are raw, there's no need to worry over dangerous bacteria or parasites. Which is most people's main concern.

General Discussion / Iodine and calcium
« on: December 15, 2012, 10:13:53 am »
Hey everyone. I plan to be fully RPD by the end of January. I have a few questions though regarding certain nutrients that I think my specific carbohydrate version of the diet will be lacking.

Iodine, good sources are seaweed, and salt with added iodine. However I want to avoid both, being seaweed isn't SCD legal, and salt with iodine usually has added impurities. Does anyone know of some good RPD sources that I can make a regular part of my diet?

I know I've posted on calcium before, but again I'm a little concerned that my dairy free RPDiet is very low in calcium. Are there any of you that take calcium supplements? Or are there foods high in calcium you eat regularly? Have any of you been eating RPD without any calcium supplements and/or calcium rich foods?

Are there any other nutrients I might be missing? I think I am a little (orthorexic) obsessed with my diet, like Tyler pointed out. I mean... I make sure all my supplements are SCD legal, when I eat all raw, I don't cheat. And I have my diet mapped out to the tee of exactly which foods I'd be eating for the week, excluding fruits and veggies. Lol

General Discussion / What kind of water do you drink?
« on: December 11, 2012, 07:45:21 am »
I've been drinking tap water  -v since going back to mainly SAD.

I notice it feels like I don't get the full benefits of drinking water, detox, assimilation of nutrients, etc. It feels like every little bit I drink my body's trying to detox the chlorine and other crap in it.

I was drinking distilled before. I just started again. I'm noticing I feel more hydrated with distilled, and it feels like I can drink less and feel better.

Display Your Culinary Creations / Fermented raw plant foods
« on: December 08, 2012, 05:08:32 pm »
Besides getting lots of friendly bacteria from high and fresh raw meat. Getting friendly bacteria from fermented plant foods is a good idea too.

By consuming a variety of bacteria types, you ensure your digestive tract is able to digest the various plant and animal foods you consume.

All of these are easily made at home, and not just cheaper than the store equivalent but much healthier since they avoid the additives (or being pasteurized).

Important Info for Newbies / Fermented plant foods
« on: December 08, 2012, 05:07:59 am »
Hey everyone. I was wondering if there could be a sticky thread on fermented plant foods.

I've looked into making homemade dill pickles, sauerkraut, and cortido.

I think it's great to get a variety of bacteria from raw animal foods, high meat, and fermented plant foods.

What do you guys think?

General Discussion / Freezing as bad as cooking?

Info on damage caused by freezing:-

(from sticky thread in info for newbies)

This article seems to consider freezing just as bad as cooking. Would any of you agree?

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Getting muscles on RPD
« on: December 03, 2012, 09:56:37 pm »
Hey everyone. I'm pretty familiar with weight lifting. But I'm unsure about how a RPDiet would work with bodybuilding.

It's my understanding that the body needs about 1 gram of protein per pound of muscle. Assuming I have about 150 pounds of muscle. That means I'd need about 150 grams of protein daily.

I know that's the "standard" on a cooked diet. But what about a raw diet? Would you need less protein since it's unaltered/denatured by cooking?

Hot Topics / article on raw milk
« on: December 02, 2012, 11:06:50 pm »
I heard about an article that showed when a pathogenic strain of e coli was added to raw and pasterized milk, the e coli multiplied rapidly in the pasterized milk. the reason given for that was that the healthy bacteria didn't allow the pathogenic strain of e.coli to multiply.

I wonder if the same thing applies to meat. and once it's cooked a pathogenic strain of bacteria could easily multiply, while on raw meat that wouldn't happen.

Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Sourcing quality foods in Miami, FL
« on: November 29, 2012, 11:55:32 pm »
Hey everyone. I'm looking to expand my sources of quality foods in Miami and surrounding areas.

I'm already a member of 1. "Miller's Organic Farm" - http://www.myhealthyfoodclub.com/
So far I've been impressed with their food quality.

I used http://www.realmilk.com/where02.html#fl to find more places.

2. "Alternative Real Good Foods" looks good also. Here's their price list. http://www.alternativerealgoodfoods.com/real_food_5.html

They have wild-caught King Salmon for $13.95/lb. While Miller's has wild-caught Alaskan Salmon for $14.50/lb or $12.50/lb for 2 pounds, but they don't specify what type of Salmon it is. So this other option is good.

I also don't think they charge a fee for their foods, Miller's charges 24% for shipping for orders under $100, and 20% for orders over $100.

I also found 3. "Farm-fresh Club at BM Organics," and contacted them asking for a price list and if there's a membership fee.

I also found 4. "http://marandofarms.com/"

If any of you live in the Miami area and have a good source of animal foods or produce I haven't mentioned. Please let me know. Thanks.

General Discussion / is raw meat safe to cook if stored for a long time?
« on: November 29, 2012, 06:37:56 am »
Hey everyone.

My dad had banned raw meat consumption in the house, however I still eat raw eggs and drink raw milk.

He says I can have raw meat in the house, I just can't eat it raw, so if I cook it it's fine.

So my plan is to buy about 2-3 pounds of chuck roast from Whole Foods, cut it up into little pieces. Fill up mason jars to the top. Then freeze everything except one jar.

My question is, suppose he's home when I'm home and I'm hungry for meat. Can I cook meat that's been stored in a jar for say a week at refrigerator temps?

Would it be dangerous in any way?

General Discussion / Omega 3:6 ratio of foods
« on: November 27, 2012, 01:24:38 am »
Hey everyone. I'm doing some research on the omega 3:6 ratio of various foods.

We all know that grass fed animals have significantly higher omega 3's and less omega 6's. I've read online that grass fed beef, buffalo, lamb, etc. can have an omega 3:6 ratio of 1:2 or 1:4.

http://www.texasgrassfedbeef.com/omega_3_fatty_acids.htm

I've looked into a few nuts and fruits/veggies fat ratios.

Food - amount of omega 3 and 6 - approximate ratio

Walnuts - o3=2,542mg, o6=10,666mg - 1:4
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3138/2

Avocado - o3=30.8mg, o6=473mg - 1:15
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1843/2

Almonds - o3=1.7mg, o6=3,378mg - 1:1987
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3085/2

Pecans - 3=276mg, 6=5,777mg - 1:21
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3129/2

Macadamia - o3=57.7mg, o6=363mg - 1:6
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3123/2

Cashews - o3=17.4mg, o6=2,179mg - 1:125
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3095/2

Chestnuts - o3=26.6mg, o6=223mg - 1:8
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3101/2

King Salmon - o3=375mg, o6=30.8mg - 12:1
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/ethnic-foods/9971/2

Grass fed beef - o3=5.9mg, o6=22.4mg - 1:4

Grass fed bison- o3=10.6mg, o6=73.1mg - 1:7

(All based on 1 oz servings)

As you can see, most nuts, have horrible omega 3:6 ratios. With walnuts being the best (1:4), and almonds being the worst (1:1987).

Salmon has an excellent omega 3:6 ratio, grass fed beef is ok, and nuts and avocados are bad.

But if we get most of our fat from say, raw beef fat, marrow, and fatty fish. Wouldn't nuts and avocados be ok in moderation?

Health / treating alopecia areata
« on: November 09, 2012, 08:54:19 am »
Hey everyone. My brother seems to have a case of alopecia areata.

It's a condition where he lost a piece of hair, with no other symptoms.

"Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes patches of hair loss. It is common and can occur at any point in life. The hair loss happens quickly and creates round patches of smooth skin with few or no hairs left. It usually happens on the scalp, but can occur anywhere you have hair including the face, arms, legs and even eyebrows. Rarely all the hair can fall out - a condition called alopecia totalis if it occurs on the scalp and alopecia universalis if it involves the entire body.

It's not known what triggers alopecia areata other than that the hair loss is caused by one's immune system attacking the roots of the hairs. Stress might be a trigger for some, but for many people alopecia happens spontaneously - that is, without a known cause."

from - http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/05/23/how-can-we-treat-my-boyfriends-unusual-balding/

Based on it being the immune system attacking the hair roots, I suggested the hygiene hypothesis. Perhaps the sterile environment has caused his immune system to react to his body. So I suggested fermented foods, possibly raw animal foods.

"To treat this condition it's important to calm the inflammation that is happening under the skin. The best treatment is to inject a small amount of steroid into the area of hair loss to stop the process. Once the inflammation resolves, the hairs grow back. Unfortunately it can take months (even years!) for the new hairs to grow as long as the other hairs that never fell out."

Based on reducing inflamation, I figure what better than a high fat, raw paleo diet (my, Raw-SCD version of course  ;) ). So I prompted him to try the RPD. Any further advice is appreciated. Thanks.

General Discussion / where to find truly raw nuts?
« on: November 06, 2012, 07:56:18 pm »
Hey everyone.

I'm looking for cheap sources for unpasturized, raw almonds, and possibly other nuts.

I've found 2 sources, but they're both some what expensive.

I think I'll give a few sprouted almonds to my neighbors for them to plant.

So anyone have any good, cheap sources of raw almonds.

Health / Who eats raw pork?
« on: October 30, 2012, 10:09:49 pm »
Alright guys, here's the question. Who eats raw pork?

What are your standards for high quality pork, for those of you that eat it.

I red a disturbing article about pig parasite eggs causing problems in the brain.

Anyone care to chime in?

Health / Pastured soy free duck eggs vs pastured soy free chicken eggs
« on: October 03, 2012, 11:15:01 pm »
Hi everyone. The farm I get food from has duck eggs and chicken eggs, both pastured and fed scraps like raw pork and beef. The chicken eggs are fertile, I'm not sure about the duck eggs.

Would you guys consider the duck eggs a better choice for eating raw? They're a little more expensive.

What are your opinions?

Primal Diet / raw milk benefits
« on: August 28, 2012, 08:16:47 am »
Howdy folks.

I haven't really mentioned this much, but I've sort of been eating more of a SAD diet than a raw paleo diet.

My finances are rather prohibitive, I've recently downgraded from my previous job. So I'm eating one, maybe two raw paleo meals daily tops. Unlike when I had a good amount of income and every meal was raw. :(

I have a really good source of raw, grass fed cows milk. And I had a dream last night that I was drinking raw milk. So I'm looking into adding it to my regimine.

What are your takes on raw dairy?

Journals / DaBoss88's healing schizophrenia journal
« on: August 13, 2012, 11:22:08 pm »
Hi everyone. Hopefully I can inspire someone with a mental illness to treat themselves naturally with this journal.

When I turned 18 I had a pychiatric episode and I was baker acted. I was put on meds, but stopped them once I left the hospital.

I went a year and a half episode free. Then was baker acted again. This time I stayed on meds. I gained about 50 pounds in a short period of time. And the side effects (lethargic, incapable of doing much) were horrible.

Around age 20 I started taking supplements. Like a high potency multivitamin, vitamin c, other antioxidants. And I noticed I had more energy and some of the side effects of the meds were at least being combatted.

At age 21-22 I started taking high doses of niacin, with other supplements. Per the recomendation of an "orthomolecular" pychiatrist, Dr. Abram Hoffer.

It helped a lot, so much I started school. Finished the 3 month vocational program, and got a better job.

With the higher income from that job, I started the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. A fruit, vegetable, nut and meat diet that rebalances the gut flora.

When I turned 23, I learned about the raw paleo diet. I started eating raw meats, fruits and veggies. Unfortunately I didn't know the importance of a high fat diet, so I was on a relatively low fat diet. And I was hospitalized again. I also cold turkeyed my meds which may have contributed, and I also stopped the supplements.

When I got out, I started a high fat rpd. And I've been doing great ever since. I eat 1.5 oz of raw beef fat with every meal. I also started the niacin and b complex again.

General Discussion / Making a 'raw paleo diet' facebook fan page?
« on: August 13, 2012, 01:09:32 am »
I've seen a lot of facebook fan pages for the specific carbohydrate diet. I thought it would be good for there to be a raw paleo fan page on facebook to get more attention to this diet.

What do you guys think?

Hey everyone. I'm sick of fowl tasting and smelling raw beef fat because its been sitting in my fridge for to long.

I want to cut up one jars worth, freeze what's left. Then unfreeze and fill another jar when I run out. Then refreeze it.

Will that denature it in any way, more than initial freezing?

Can I freeze mason jars without them breaking?

Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / benefits of parasites
« on: July 26, 2012, 10:31:21 pm »
There's a lot of debate as to whether parasites are beneficial or destructive. Most health professionals and nutritionists claim they're very bad. While Aajonous and others on this forum consider them beneficial.

Well I found a link that shows some interesting benefits of parasites in sharks and humans.

http://www.scienceinschool.org/2011/issue20/horrors

^ This link shows that a certain parasite in a species of shark may reduce heavy metal toxicity. The parasites had significantly higher levels of two heavy metals compared to the sharks. Suggesting the parasites may have been leeching heavy metals from the sharks, therefore protecting them from toxicity.

It also shows evidence that parasites in humans may reduce allergies, eczema, and asthma.

Are there other benefits? Maybe. Feel free to post links to any parasitic benefits you can find on the web.
