Health / Re: Crohn's Disease for 10 years. Need dietary suggestions!
« on: October 16, 2009, 09:50:59 am »
I don't see any point taking this "frozen" discussion so deep.

For most of us frozen meat is the only way to go about it.  Surely, it'll be nice to live next to a good farm and have fresh meat every day.  Even better if we had our own farms.  But we don't.

Let's concentrate on figuring out what works best for each of us.  I personally don't care how it works on the molecular level.  As long as it works that's all I care about.  All I want is to feel great and be healthy and spend my time with my family instead of constantly googling for answers.

Fruit would be perfectly OK if you don't mind extra sugars.  One average-size apple has about 15gr of sugar, that's about 3 full tea-spoons.

To know for sure you would have to take your stool to the lab.
Otherwise we can only speculate.

It could very well be you got some kind of unfriendly bacteria.  Cholera does similar thing only on much bigger and nastier scale.  Usually this goes not last long.

Ground meat is especially vulnerable for bacteria contamination.  Solid meat, on the other hand,  is sterile inside, only surface can get contaminated.

If you have a good stomach with super strong stomach acid, then it should take care of any bacteria.  Otherwise it might pass thru and there you have it.

Primal Diet / Re: Raw Milk Question
« on: October 13, 2009, 03:36:00 am »
In theory yes.

Milk sugar, Lactose is a disaccharide that consists of galactose and glucose. (from wikipedia).
Excess glucose in the blood triggers insulin response.

In reality, it'll probably depend on how much milk you are going to consume.

Eat often
Eat MORE than just being full.  Almost like a kid and ice cream.
EAT CARBS!  And eat them with, or at least close to, your meat/fat.
Lift weights, lift heavy, get near to/achieve muscle failure often
Eat ALOT
Eat MORE than just being full.
Get plenty of and good sleep at night.

These are all very good points.  Unfortunately, they only apply to a healthy person with healthy GI system. Those who have difficulty gaining weight usually have some kind of GI problem and above tips can easily aggravate the situation.

I also do not believe in so called "fast metabolism".  In a healthy system all extra (unspent) sugars will convert into fat by the liver for use during leaner times.   If this does not happen then GI system is not working efficiently and there is some kind of problem.

If I eat more carbs I get health issues that make it even worse.  Also eating more than just being full only slows down digestion/absorption and puts more strain on already weakened GI system.

The solution is to recover your GI system.  Surely, easier said then done as I am still trying to recover my digestion.

So far I have found that eating when hungry works the best.  Eat something small and salty 10-15 min before the meal.  Eat in smaller portions.  This way stomach gets empty rather quickly and will be ready for the next meal.  When I eat big portions it tend to sit in the stomach forever.
I avoid starchy food as they give heavy bloating.  Fruits and leafy greens do not appear to give me bloating. A slice of bread also does not give bloating.
Rare meat and fat in moderate amounts with little salt digests pretty quickly.

I really hope I get to the point where eating more carbs will result in some fat deposits.  So far it is not the case.

I am in the same boat, very hard to gain weight regardless of what I eat.  I suspect some inefficiencies with digestion and/or absorption.  All animal fats are digested pretty much the same way, bile emulsifies fat, then gets absorbed in the small intestine.

I am trying different food combinations to see which gets digested the quickest.  I think the longer it seats in the stomach the less likely it is getting digested properly.

Well, antibiotics will screw up your bowel pretty bad.  Last time I had to take antibiotics it took me about a month to get back to normal.  Antibiotics will kill a lot of useful intestinal microflora and it'll take some time to recover.

I'd say go back to whatever diet that made you feel the best and then very slowly transition to whatever you are trying to achieve.  I think any drastic changes are really hard on the body.

Also, try to eat smaller amounts, it really helps if your stomach does not produce quality acid.

I found doctors are really of no use. They tend to treat only symptoms. Like, you have pain, here is aspirin.

I'm curious what kind of stomach do you have to be able to take 3lb! of meat at once?  Are you feeling pretty empty in only an hour to add 13-16oz butter with 6 eggs to it?

I'm impressed.

If I eat more than 150gr of meat it just sits in the stomach, taking forever to feel empty.

My gums are progressively receding, don't bleed, not inflamed, just receding.  I stopped eating bread and dairy.  Do not eat many acidic fruits.  Have not transitioned to raw meat-fat yet.  Will gradually try it.

I like Durian, have not had it in a long time but there is nothing like it on earth, if can stand the smell.
