General Discussion / Re: Supplements
« on: July 17, 2008, 06:54:07 am »
I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on a multi-mineral/fulvic acid supplement.

I have a feeling I could benefit from this, just to make sure I'm getting all the minerals that I should be, as I'm sure that today's soil quality is nowhere near what it used to be.

US Wellness meats sells one: http://www.grasslandbeef.com/Categories.bok?category=Nutraceuticals%3AConcentrated+Liquid+Minerals

and then there is Shilajit, which I've taken before:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shilajit
http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/fulvic.htm

So I'm wondering what you guys think, if it's necessary, and if so which one would you go with? The one from US Wellness meats seems overpriced, but it has the benefit of being standardized

General Discussion / Re: Tomatoes Harmful?
« on: July 17, 2008, 05:02:28 am »
Goodness, I sure hope tomatoes aren't harmful!
I really don't think they are.
I eat tomatoes every day (as well as a good amount of organic ketchup with my meats... which, I know I know, is not raw paleo at all  :( )

Yeah, I can easily down a pound of raw ground beef and still feel light whereas I know that same pound of cooked ground beef would leave me feeling fuller.

General Discussion / boxcarguy07's Organ Meat Review Thread
« on: July 12, 2008, 09:22:49 pm »
Hello all!
I thought maybe this could be useful for some people, but it not, then at least entertaining for myself  ;D

I just got in a shipment of quite a few different organ meats so I thought I would post my experiences with them as I try them.
If this is more appropriate for the "Journal" sub-forum, by all means, would a moderator please move it there?

Anyways, here we go!

BEEF LIVER:

This was my first organ meat I've ever tried.
I ate the first bite without much hesitation. The flavor was sooo very interesting, like nothing I've ever experienced. I actually laughed out loud because of the newness of the flavor. It is quite bitter, and has a very prominent aftertaste that you can feel as you breathe out your nose. It is very slippery and juicy.
By the middle of it, I was growing tired of the taste. The texture was not that bad though.
However, by the end of it, I kind of enjoyed it. I liked sucking the flavory juices out of it and then chewing what was left.
It took a couple times eating this to really get used to it, but now it's like nothing at all to eat it. The first time I ate it I ate very small bites because larger bites were just too much, but now I can eat large bites no problem.

LAMB KIDNEY:

I'm just polishing off these right now.
This time I laughed out loud prior to even tasting it, just because it seemed quite absurd to my still-new-to-RAF brain that I was actually going to eat this. Plus they looked funny. They were "rose-bud cut", which makes sense when you look at them. They are actually quite pretty. Dark purple which fades to a lighter purple in the center, it actually did kind of resemble a flower.
All in all it was pretty good!
Salty and sweet tasting, which quickly dissipates into a bitter aftertaste which is akin to to raw beef liver but not as strong, but longer lasting perhaps.
It is pretty gelatinous in texture, but kind of "crumbles" as you chew it, and it becomes kind of a liquid the more you chew, which mixes nicely with the bit of fat that surrounds the kidney.

...more to come as I eat 'em!

General Discussion / Re: my first Slankers order!
« on: July 08, 2008, 06:57:30 am »
So I just placed my first order as well!!

LAMB:

Liver - 5 lbs
Heart - 5 lbs
Kidneys - 5 lbs

BEEF:

Marrow bones - 2 lbs
Liver - 5 lbs
Heart - 3 lbs
Kidneys - 5 lbs
Spleen - 3 lbs
Oysters - 2 of 'em
stew meat = 8 lbs

I was also going to order 12 lbs of suet, 8 lbs of ground beef, and 8 lbs of chili meat, but I'm living in my parents house over the summer and they said they will not let me eat suet while here (that's okay... I'm thankful enough they let me eat raw meat in the first place!)
so instead, I ordered 25 lbs of 75% lean ground beef from US Wellness meats.
I'll be ordering the above things from Slankers though instead next time, when I'm off at school!

I can't wait! I've not had any organs other than liver before, so I had better learn to like the others!

wow, thankfully not!

I would be in big trouble if so!

Things that give me gas are raw eggs (less so now than when I first started)
and nuts (so now I only eat hemp seeds, as those don't. I used to eat a lot of almonds, and those gave me gas)

However, my old diet of oats and protein shakes gave me worse gas than anything!

.............gas

Cool deal!  8)

I'm about to place my first order with them this weekend.
They have 30% off lamb right now (!!!), so I'll be getting quite a bit of that

General Discussion / Re: How many meals a day?
« on: July 03, 2008, 09:53:59 am »
1 or 2 for me. I was trying to follow "The Warrior Diet" before that calls for one large meal in the evening with light snacking allowed during the day.

Same here.
I eat very lightly during the day and then feast from 5:30 to 9:30 pm. I eat a large meal in courses.

General Discussion / Re: Moldy fruit?
« on: June 26, 2008, 06:05:13 am »
Yeah, I guess it's the mold's natural defenses... they're saying "this is my fruit now!" and apparently some produce potent neurotoxins. I don't think washing it off does much as I was told by the time mold appears on the surface, it's networks already run through the inside of the fruit.
But hey, I've been fine so far right?  :D

About the steak and liver... sounds good! How do you make carpaccio? I just ate some raw liver (gonna eat some more steak in a little bit)

General Discussion / Moldy fruit?
« on: June 25, 2008, 08:20:49 am »
Hey there...

I was just wondering if it is really that bad to eat fruit (specifically berries) that have grown a small amount of mold.
I usually do eat them (as long as it's just a little bit of mold) and I've always been fine, but I'm just wondering if I'm playing
russian roulette  :o

Anyways, I'm munching on a raw grass-fed rib-eye steak right now. Couldn't be happier  ;D

Goodness... I love fruit so much it's hard to pick favorites.
Raspberries are really good, but I eat way more strawberries.

Welcoming Committee / Hello! Introducing myself!
« on: June 20, 2008, 07:18:51 am »
Hello all!

I just ate my first bit of raw organ meat, so I now feel qualified to have an account here, haha.

It was 4 oz. of raw grass-fed beef liver. I do wish to share my experience.

I've never had liver before, cooked or otherwise. I ate the first bite without much hesitation. The flavor was sooo very interesting, like nothing I've ever experienced. I actually made some weird noises in response.
By the middle of it, I was growing tired of the taste. The texture was not that bad though.
However, by the end of it, I kind of enjoyed it. I liked sucking the flavory juices out of it and then chewing what was left.

I might marinate it in a little lemon juice next time.

I am pretty new to this... bought some grass-fed ribeye steak from a grocery store last week, ate that raw and it was delicious! And I ate raw fish (red tuna and mahi mahi) in the weeks before that. But that liver was something very new indeed.

Anyways, just saying hi! I have some questions but I will post those elsewhere.
