Hot Topics / New book re addictiveness of fast-food
« on: April 01, 2010, 08:05:29 pm »
OK, an ex-head of the US FDA(Food and Drug Administration) has just written a book in which he blames fats, sugars and salt for making foods highly addictive. An article of this is shown below:-

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/dietandfitness/7541646/Old-fashioned-hunger-doesnt-come-into-it.html

Now, he blames particularly the combination of fats and sugars as the main culprit above all behind such addiction to fast-foods. Naturally as always, he chooses to ignore current scientific data showing that opioids produced by cooking are in fact  the main culprits behind addiction to modern  junk-foods(of course, harsher, modern cooking/processing makes things even worse than previous gentler cooking methods such as boiling).

Judging from past posts on other forums, most RVAFers view the FDA as a sort of "Great Satan". I'm not generally a fan of the more extreme RVAF conspiracy theories re the FDA, but it seems to interfere a great deal re removing peoples' rights to certain foods etc. I'm not too familiar with the FDA's nefarious doings as I'm from the UK, but I do recall the   FDA's ridiculously low setting of recommended mercury-in-fish limits , which are way, way, below the point at which any harm could occur from such ingested mercury.

General Discussion / Eat pemmican and get atherosclerosis!
« on: March 30, 2010, 07:59:01 pm »
A while back, I'd mentioned that there were very few studies done on the consumption of rendered fat such as pemmican. Fortunately, I just encountered a referrence to Cordain finding scientific data confirming that pemmican-eating Inuit had extensive atherosclerosis as a result of such dire food:-

"Here is part of a Cordain interview about finding extensive
atherosclerosis in an old Inuit woman from 1520 AD.

"…..I’m very farmiliar with pemmican. I’ve got all the pemmican stuff
forever. Stefanson tried to get a grant in World War II from the U-S
army to feed the troops pemmican.
I’m not saying that pemmican isn’t a healthy food. It’s probably an
expedient way to provide calories over a North American winter. It’s a
very great way to store these things. An all pemmican diet, I don’t
think is a healthy diet for a number of reasons. If you only eat
pemmican, I think you’ll become osteoporotic. You won’t get any
vitamin A. If you eat only pemmican, you will promote atherosclerosis.
So I just bring to you one paper that I’d like you to distribute. That
paper is published in an obscure journal, the Texas Heart Institute
Journal in 1993. So nobody’s read it, because you can’t get it on
Medline. What this guy did, he was a physician, an MD PhD by the name
of Zimmerman. Zimmerman was a pathologist, and he was lucky enough to
be in Alaska when a 400 AD, so we’re talking 1600 year old, frozen
Inuit mummy was recovered. He did an autopsy on this, and he sectioned
the coronary arteries. So this is 400 AD. These people had never seen
white people. They had only eaten what Steve Phinney had suggested
people eat–fat and protein–and significant atherosclerosis in a 53
year old Inuit woman, on pathology. That wasn’t just the only case. He
then was privy to another group of frozen Eskimo bodies that were
recovered in Barrow, Alaska, and these people date to about 1520 AD,
so just slightly after the time Columbus had discovered America. Once
again, no influence of Western civilization. So presumably, they were
living at Barrow, 60 degrees north, they were eating meat and fat
their entire life. They might get a little bit of berries sometime in
the summer. Extensive atherosclerosis was in the older woman, who was
30. All three of them were osteoporotic. They were severely
osteoporotic on that type of diet. So you can give this to people who
claim that all we need to eat is meat and fat...."

http://www.meandmydiabetes.com/2010/03/24/loren-cordain-caution-on-saturated-fats-disaster-with-grains-will-be-public-after-march-25th/comment-page-1/ "

*EDIT* It seems I was apparently wrong in not mentioning the original source after Cordain, so I should add that the above quote was by Kenneth Anderson, and featured on the PALEOFOOD list-group.*

There are other examples such as Mann's study of the Masai which confirmed that they had atherosclerotic tendencies. All this data is most useful as it counters the foolish notion of Weston-Price that hunter-gatherers in the Neolithic era all were super-healthy, and shows that even lightly-cooked, relatively unprocessed diets can cause a degree of ill-health.

Here's the article(it just talks about the harm of "fat" in general, though it's clear that the problem is mainly  that the fat is cooked:-

Primal Diet / New Radio Interview From Aajonus
« on: March 27, 2010, 01:42:51 am »
from another poster on a different RVAF diet group:- "Aajonus has just confirmed the radio interview for April 9th, two weeks from today, 8:30 - 10am EST. Again the show will be archived in mp3 format and made available to you via the internet.

For those who wish to listen live via internet go to www.wgdr.org Not sure how many people can listen at once. The direct call-in phone number to me in the studio is 802-454-7762. Callers will be put on the air directly with no screening or introduction. Internet listeners will need to turn down the volume on their computers as there is a 30-60 second delay in the webcasting.

I'm still compiling questions, and looking for new ones. So, keep thinking about what you would like to ask Aajonus and send them to me."

Off Topic / US Health Bill
« on: March 23, 2010, 07:01:01 pm »
I see the dreaded US health bill is now being passed. This will no doubt hurt US rpders as they now will be expected to pay for the endless pill-popping that SAD-eating americans go in for in a big way, with all the compulsory health insurance. Plus, the US government is laughably making claims that the vastly increased costs will be met by taxation of the most well-off. These idiots have obviously never heard of the Laffer Curve:-

Primal Diet / Survey from Aajonus
« on: March 13, 2010, 03:20:48 pm »
Here is an e-mail from an acolyte of Aajonus with surveys to fill out. If you`re interested, fill out the various surveys etc.:(not sure if this is needed but AV`s e-mail address is optimal@earthlink.net)-

Hello!  If more people were aware of the benefits of the Primal Diet, it might be easier for us in the forms of individual support,
laws to enable us to have the good food we need, more active opposition to governmental or big business interference and
so on. Please view the following points and take action:
1. This survey http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2LVDLP6 is for you, the subscriber.  Expressing your views on this survey
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2LVDLP6 will enable me to communicate the benefits better to potential subscribers.
It only has 10 questions and will only take a few minutes.
2. If you have ever wanted Aajonus to come to your city to deliver a Primal Diet Workshop and consults, now you can see
exactly how to go about this and what is needed on page http://www.wewant2live.com/site/811618/page/937343, which
you may also reach as the 5th navigation bar on the left "Aajonus' radio shows, lectures, workshops, potlucks and more".
Aajonus gives the requirements on the bottom part of this page.
3. Aajonus would like us all to be self sufficient; the ideal would be for each of us to have a farm although for most of us that is
not practical.  I have found a horticulturist whose methods most closely bring about natural organic vegetables - and with the
least amount of work; you can get the flavor of this at www.organicfoodforless.info.  You may view my blog on this subject at
 www.DiscoverOrganicGardening.com.

Thank you!

Off Topic / Get it off your chest -Things/People You hate
« on: March 09, 2010, 01:55:58 am »
OK, here is a new thread.-

I hate helmeted psycho skiers because they cannot properly see where they are going nor can hear as well as others and are more likely to end up causing accidents as a result.

I also hate French computer keyboards as it feels like I`m trying to type on some  bug-eyed alien`s keyboard instead. So far, typing posts seems to take 3 to 4 times as long as a result and I keep on mistakenly  pressing the blasted "q"  button instead of "a".

Off Topic / Couple of things
« on: March 05, 2010, 04:52:35 pm »
Before this disastrous skiing holiday , I asked a new grassfed meat(lamb/beef etc.) as to what they fed their animals on. They rapidly stated that they fed them on grass most of the time but in the winter fed them on some grains. Watch out when you read that the meat is grassfed as it is often the case that it is not 100% grassfed. Now some people such as myself can find way round this such as getting most of their raw meats from wild game, but most should be leery as hell about this.

Another thing:- After a long delay, I intend to add to rawpaleodiet.com when I get back. My initial intention is to add a raw myths section with 1 or 2 paragraphs debunking each point such as the ridiculous mercury-in-fish theory, the laughable noble-savage theory etc. There are others such as the notion that the more raw food you (over) eat the faster you'll recover. Any suggestions re other myths to debunk are welcome.

I'm bored and don't want to stay in bed for 23 hours a day. So I've thought of a few things:- some big airlines are offering raw vegan meals to people who specially ask. We could e-mail them to get them to do rpd-friendly meals if we wanted. Plus hospitals could be coerced to provide suitable raw meat dishes(that would be wonderful right now). Oh and someone e-mailed me an old e-mail asking me for interviews, I explained I couldn't right now and that others such as rawkyle and lex had previously suggested they might be available for such(I hope my memory is correct re this?).

Hot Topics / New York Cooked, Palaeolithic Diet Meetup
« on: February 17, 2010, 06:00:48 am »
http://www.meetup.com/Eating-Paleo-in-NYC/

I'm rather concerned about the raw-milk meeting mention as it's a non-palaeo-oriented subject.

At any rate, my intention re mentioning cooked, palaeolithic diet meetups is to generate more interest on social interaction among rawpalaeos, even within a cooked-paleo framework. I would love it if RVAFers could have the same number/proportion of meetups/potlucks as Cooked-Palaeos,Primal Dieters, Raw Vegans etc., within the general population.

I also note that some formerly 100% raw vegan gurus have been recommending some raw animal foods(usually raw fish or raw eggs or raw dairy), so I increasingly view rawists in general as not being diametrically opposed to each other.
