I was at a Nourishing Traditions workshop this weekend, and Sally Fallon noted that chickens fed soy will pass the antinutrients in soy into their eggs. I wonder what percent of egg intolerance issues are actually due to soy antinutrient contamination? Most chicken feeds contain soy in varying amounts, and all chicken farms I've found always feed their chickens at least some commercial feed, even if organic.

I don't think meat is what drove our evolution. I think it was the fat that our ancestors found with the meat in the animals they scavenged or killed. Our big brains are made of fat, after all. If you want to be more specific, I'd guess saturated fat and/or cholesterol are the most important biomolecules.

I'm not trying to defend Sharon Palmer or James Stewart. It sounds to me like they're involved in finagling of their own, and if they've violated the law they should be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Thoth, your most recent post is nonsensical enough that I wonder if you were high on something when you typed it.

The post previous where Aajonus attempts to defend himself is a bit out of context. Is he defending his statements in the snippet of audio that's been circulating? If so, it seems like his defense attempts to divert focus from his apparent extortion attempt ($500,000 from Palmer) to issues of Stewart paying dues to a trust fund he apparently controls, an issue not even mentioned in the audio clip. If his defense is not directed at the audio snippet, then I don't have enough context to know what to make of it.

And a PhD might not mean anything to you, but it means a lot to some people. It obviously meant something to Aajonus, otherwise he wouldn't have paid serious cash to buy one from a diploma mill. It also means something to me, because I labored for four years to earn a real one from an accredited university. And it means something to my consulting clients, who pay me top dollar to work for them.

I never claimed he lied to be an 'evil' person. His fake PhD and fantastical stories bother me because he makes us all look ridiculous.

Off Topic / Re: Study claims CR is better than IF dieting
« on: June 12, 2012, 07:06:51 am »
IF is intermittent fasting (or intermittent feeding, as it's used in the article TD linked to). This means allowing modest periods of time (up to a day or two) to pass between meals once in a while. CR is caloric restraint, which means deliberately and commonly eating a lower than normal caloric intake each day. They are both about reducing caloric intake, but differ in their frequency (IF is less common caloric reduction while CR or more common).

General Discussion / Re: High calorie foods?
« on: June 12, 2012, 02:54:18 am »
Find some grass fed beef suet, back fat or bone marrow. Cut them into small pieces and treat as a finger food. Those foods are about as calorie dense as you're going to get. Nuts, regardless of how you process them, have a lot of anti-nutrients and don't strike me as something useful in the context of detoxification.

Although I'm happy to criticize Aajonus and his finagling, I have to agree with GS here and say I want more context before I draw any conclusions. This is a small snippet of what I assume is a longer conversation (and longer recording?). Of course, the snippet that is available doesn't cast AV in a very positive light, particularly given other recent findings...

I am very aware of the work Aajonus does to promote the availability of raw milk. Although I applaud him for that, it doesn't get him off the hook for his fake PhD and fantastical stories. Leaders in any movement need to carry themselves with a high degree of dignity, lest they become a burden to their movements. Aajonus Vonderplanitz is becoming quite a burden.

Mike Adams is a joke. No argument there. But Aajonus Vonderplanitz is also a joke. And a fraud.

Both men have offered a few good ideas, but in the end their behavior, whether it be turning to goofy tabloid reporting with fear-mongering 'internet news networks' or buying fake credentials and inventing guru origin stories, give them the appearance of back-stabbing snake-oil salesmen. We'd be best to let them settle into the dustbin of history.

I suspect they're all scammers, including and especially Aajonus Vanderplanitz. Yeah, he does advocate ideas that some of us have found useful, but we're foolish to continue holding him high given that he's dug himself into such a deep hole regarding his credentials and trustworthiness. Time for AV to enjoy a downward spiral and hit rock bottom. Hopefully he enjoys a soft landing, maybe in a few years he'll start being honest with people and stop building his business on silly stories.

Administrators might consider removing the "Primal Diet" section so he doesn't drag this website down with him.

We don't care because we know what is truth - but when there is one lie from someone in such a spotlight the assumption is that there is likely more...

Exactly. I have brought this issue up on another thread in the past. This proves beyond any doubt my long-held suspicion. Very frustrating that someone who takes such great pains to turn themselves into a public face of the raw food movement would do something so foolish. A real PhD isn't that hard to get; I finished mine last summer...

General Discussion / Re: Cooked vs Raw fats
« on: June 03, 2012, 09:07:24 pm »
In the same way that chemical changes (denaturing) happens to protein when it's heated, chemical changes happen to fats also. The higher temperature and longer heating period used, the greater the changes.

General Discussion / Re: Blending
« on: June 03, 2012, 09:06:09 pm »
Possibly. I can't say for sure whether blending or beating denatures proteins, but these processes certainly promote oxidation. Whether blending or beating, as processes, are good or bad will depend on whether the amount of oxidation outweighs other benefits that these processes deliver. That depends on what food you're talking about, and how long/much you blend or beat it.

For what it's worth, I don't beat or blend eggs, but I do blend greens and plant materials when making smoothies and juices.

And while you're welcome to experiment with wodgina's sleep deprivation method, that sounds like a bad idea to me. I'd instead suggest getting a good night's sleep, not eating anything after 4 pm or so, and getting up with the sun each morning.

You can learn more about Non-Violent Communication here: http://www.cnvc.org/. My favorite resource is the CD set entitled "Speaking Peace".

Another great psychological resource that helped with healing a lot of historical and ancestral trauma for me was re-evaluation counseling, also called co-counseling. You can learn more about this here: http://www.rc.org/.

Not sure where you live but you can probably find groups of one or both of these that practice locally. They'd be valuable to plug into.

Hi Charlie, I don't visit this site too often anymore but saw your post and I can offer you a success story. I suffered from severe depression from the ages 14 until about 22, which included symptoms identical to those you've articulated and culminated in a suicide attempt. My diet certainly changed afterwards, but I can't attribute my recovery entirely to diet. The things that most helped me include:

1. Eating less processed food, then eventually more raw food, and finally focusing on getting raw fats with a proper balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 (i.e. about 1:1)
2. Reducing my exposure to environmental toxins, including cigarette smoke
3. Getting sun over my entire body (you need to be eating lots of good fat for this to help, otherwise your body can't turn the sun into vitamin D)
4. Spending quiet time in nature (Jon Young calls this a 'Sit Spot')
5. Learning and using the communication process called Non-Violent Communication (I started this practice about the time I started eating more raw foods, which was in 2003).
6. Talking to people about particular things that bothered me in my life (NVC was a pre-requisite for this in my case; at first I couldn't bear the thought of talking to people, so I started by talking to trees and rocks while at my sit spot and eventually reached a point where I could talk to people)
7. Became more active (yoga, martial arts, hiking; although I don't do yoga anymore, just martial arts, lots of low-intensity workouts including long walks and brief high-intensity workouts about once every 7 days)

If you want more details, let me know. Feel free to send a PM if you'd prefer that option.

General Discussion / Re: manual juicers
« on: June 01, 2012, 08:38:35 pm »
I own the wheatgrass juicer that's featured in the second link you pasted. It's okay. It juices wheatgrass and similar leafy greens tolerably well, but anything that's more dry or more moist just doesn't work. You couldn't, for instance, juice pine needles in it (although some internet sources claim you can), nor can you juice vegetables like cucumber or carrots. You certainly can't juice fruits in it, just makes a big mess.

For juicing, I'd recommend getting a Vitamix and blending, then straining the pulp out with cloth to make your juice. Yes, there will be a small amount of oxidation but if you start with fresh produce your juice will still be highly nutrient dense. If you can't afford a Vitamix (refurbished models are quite reasonable in price) then I'd stick with wadging until you can.

My two cents...

General Discussion / Re: Interesting post on AGE's
« on: May 18, 2012, 09:51:03 pm »
Very interesting article, glad you linked to it here. To a degree TD is correct in that the article focuses primarily on the impacts of eating cooked foods without explicitly saying so, although their generalizations are still useful. I think a diet consisting of mostly raw plant material and including modest amounts of raw animal foods probably is ideal though, as even raw animal foods have far more AGEs and AGE precursors than plant foods.

I use a razor. I keep my head shaved. This has worked wonders to my scalp health, it feels nice and requires zero maintenance.
