General Discussion / Homemade Fermented Coconut Milk
« on: October 25, 2013, 06:28:18 pm »
Hi guys,
several days ago I made some coconut milk (from old coconut plus water), put it in the fridge and totally forgot it for a week or so.
Yesterday, I found it and it smelled like cheese. It was all set up in pieces.
I decided to give it a try and so far, so good.

Do you guys eat this?

Over the internet I found articles about culturing coconut milk into cheese but always with the adding of some specific bacterias..
I wonder if that is strictly necessary since it seems it worked very well without anything..

Instinctive sleeping and resting postures: an anthropological and zoological approach to treatment of low back and joint pain
[/size]

If you are a medical professional and have been trained in a “civilised” country you probably know next to nothing about the primate Homo sapiens and how they survive in the wild. You probably do not know that nature has provided an automatic manipulator to correct most spinal and peripheral joint lesions in primates. In common with millions of other so called civilised people you suffer unnecessarily from musculoskeletal problems and are discouraged about how to treat the exponential rise in low back pain throughout the developed world. Humans are one of 200 species of primates.1 All primates suffer from musculoskeletal problems; nature, recognising this fact, has given primates a way to correct them.

Intuitive running, to me, means running for attunement. This goes beyond any workout routine, there's no making it into a business model, or becoming certified in it, and it doesn't lend itself to competition or media attention. This is more like a meditation, but an engaged meditation. Tuning into what's around me, myself, my running partners. I want to become sharper on my runs, physically, but also in relationship. In how my brain works.

What they do not vALUE,
they will not PROTECT
and what they do not protect, they will LOSE.
Charles Jordan - Play Again

Quote
One generation from now most people in the U.S. will have spent more time in the virtual world than in nature. New media technologies have improved our lives in countless ways. Information now appears with a click. Overseas friends are part of our daily lives. And even grandma loves Wii.

But what are we missing when we are behind screens? And how will this impact our children, our society, and eventually, our planet? At a time when children play more behind screens than outside, PLAY AGAIN explores the changing balance between the virtual and natural worlds. Is our connection to nature disappearing down the digital rabbit hole?

This moving and humorous documentary follows six teenagers who, like the “average American child,” spend five to fifteen hours a day behind screens. PLAY AGAIN unplugs these teens and takes them on their first wilderness adventure – no electricity, no cell phone coverage, no virtual reality.

Through the voices of children and leading experts including journalist Richard Louv, sociologist Juliet Schor, environmental writer Bill McKibben, educators Diane Levin and Nancy Carlsson-Paige, neuroscientist Gary Small, parks advocate Charles Jordan, and geneticist David Suzuki, PLAY AGAIN investigates the consequences of a childhood removed from nature and encourages action for a sustainable future.

Health / Staph infections
« on: September 26, 2013, 11:01:57 pm »
Hi guys,
since I ve moved to the tropics, I periodically get staph aureus  infections.
When I moved to Europe in between, they disappeared.

Last, 3 days ago, after the trail in the forest when I got bitten by some mosquitoes and then scratched with my "dirty" nails  8) and caused it to get infected..

I am now cleaning my wounds with hot water and it is SO  painful..  :'( :'(

A fruit friend of mine told me once somebody gets it first time, s/he will hardly get rid off..

Is that true?

What s your experience about it?

Hi guys, I ve received an email sponsoring this intensive and interesting course in rewilding.
http://www.bodyenlightenment.me/university/be-wild

Id like to participate since I believe it is very useful, especially for us that we are seeking a more natural approach to life.
The total cost is 349 us dollars.
I thought we could join forces and share the costs of the whole curse, making it more accessible to those interested (I am the first in the line!).

Also, by the time the course will start, I believe I ll be already on the deserted beach I found with no internet connection and I need to have the calls stored somewhere to be downloaded later on..

Take some time to think about it.
Registrations Close October 5 at midnight.

Any help is appreciated!

Feel free to PM me for further details.

May the Spirits bless you!

Journals / Aura´s Rewilding Journey
« on: September 20, 2013, 03:14:36 am »
I thought about starting a journal writing my experiences on this rewilding path. I ll gather some of my old posts in here and add new ones as I write them..

But first, let me introduce myself..

When the River meets the Ocean – a short biography of a Inner and Outer journey in search of the Immortal Self
by and of Aura Licht

Early Childhood and Adolescency: Like a Fish out of water

They call me Aura Licht and I am a youg woman from Europe, class ´83, born and grew up in a big capital city. My biological parents abandoned me in a hospital right after birth and since then I embarked on a quest to find my “true” biological origins and eventually this personal path of self discovery broadened its way and fueled the desire in me to discover the roots of humanity as a whole.

In a sense, I was born an anarchist and a solitary creature.

What I call the “pristine nature” in Man was pretty much vivid in me throughout my whole life and institutions as well as education and civilization itself did not manage to extinguish this ancestral fire of ultimate Freedom within me. After all, it was the closest thing to a heritage I had.

Since my early childhood I have been always the “rebel” of the family, the girl that could not sit right at the table, the weird one, the crazy freak with strange ideas, the one that questioned authority and rules, that could not value money, that refused religions and their gods and who thought humans should be free to exist on this Planet.
I struggled to fit in society and around the age of 23 I started to perceive the very narrow cage I was trapped in.

At that time I had a job and a stable relationship, a highly processed diet and a sedentary lifestyle.
I left everything behind and allowed the “alchemy” to take place.

Food Revolution: Cleansing the body from toxic substances

Seven years ago I instinctively switched to a raw food diet and my overall sense of clarity and health improved astoundingly. Unfortunately my rational mind - addicted with old educational patterns and need for dogma – prevented me to see the limiting and dangerous global implications of a neolithic vegan diet. Although I was never solely moved by animal rights, it was the idyllic biblical view of a fruitarian paradise that I wished to achieve the most.

The Trip: In search of Paradise

Few years after the dramatic dietary changes, I embarked on a trip to build my private lush fruit forest. Together with some friends we travelled the world to find the “perfect” spot on earth and while doing it, some people left and some other joined but our overall inexperience, egotism and stubborness prevented us from setting up a proper place in the tropics where to finally settle down in a foreign country.
Eventually, I found myself alone, the others gone back to civilization.
It was during this time of loneliness and deep introspection that I felt really free to explore the roots of human lifestyle and challenge myself to push this quest a step further...
It was not by chance – I believe so– the last member departure was on the 4th of July, America´s Independence Day and mine..

The Fall of Dogma: The Last Frontier to Liberation

Freed from vegan dogmas and faded away desires of a “neolithic paradise”, I entered the world of the hunter/gatherer lifestyle, indigenous nutrition and medicinal plants.
As the dogmas and stereotyped alien ideas left my mind, my heart quickly returned on the main reason I started this venture: discovering the ancestral Nature of Man.
For the very first time on this journey, I was willing to accept whatever reality may come, I was ready to confront myself with the “true” me, fusing in with a reality that is what it is, beyond the duality of “good” and “bad”.

If there is a thing Nature cannot provide the human souls with – because of its being One in essence/origin - is certainly the biblically so-called “Free Will” to attune to her. That is something some individuals acquire when separated from their true environment. A gift that comes with the confrontation and experience of opposites. A tool we pay an hard price for.

I guess that the developing of the Free Will is the spiritual reason why we left the forest in first place.

The New Era: Present Day and future Projects

I am currently living on a forest property in South America where I am reconnecting myself with the quintessence of Nature, finding strategies to rewild my being.
Because my knowledge is limited, I am soon moving to live with indigenous people of this region, learning their ways to surthrive.

After that, my plans are to set up a property that would serve as a “rewilding school” for all of those that are ready to leave civilization but have none or poor knowledge about it. You can read about it HERE (edenwithin.blogspot.com)

What if all you need is already right there in front of you? In a world where media constantly sends us messages about how to look, what to wear and how to think about life, it’s going to take someone wise and wild enough to get us thinking about going back to nature as a way to harness the true power we have as a species; to revive the vitality we once had as a natural part of the planet.

Hot Topics / Your ancestors didn't sleep like you
« on: September 12, 2013, 11:29:43 pm »
Hi guys,
it has been a few nights I fall asleep early (around 18:30 - it is already dark over here) and then wake up, say at 23:00. Then I just cannot fall asleep again for 3 to 4 hours, finding myself in the mood of dancing, writing, my thoughts run smoothly, I am very creative. Finally, I go back to sleep at around 02 am and then wake up naturally at 6:30/07..

I was sincerely wondering if this pattern is to be considered "natural" and today I just found this article totally randomly..
Quote
Your ancestors didn't sleep like you

Ok, maybe your grandparents probably slept like you. And your great, great-grandparents. But once you go back before the 1800s, sleep starts to look a lot different. Your ancestors slept in a way that modern sleepers would find bizarre – they slept twice. And so can you.
The History

The existence of our sleeping twice per night was first uncovered by Roger Ekirch, professor of History at Virginia Tech.

His research found that we didn’t always sleep in one eight hour chunk. We used to sleep in two shorter periods, over a longer range of night. This range was about 12 hours long, and began with a sleep of three to four hours, wakefulness of two to three hours, then sleep again until morning.

References are scattered throughout literature, court documents, personal papers, and the ephemera of the past. What is surprising is not that people slept in two sessions, but that the concept was so incredibly common. Two-piece sleeping was the standard, accepted way to sleep.

“It’s not just the number of references – it is the way they refer to it, as if it was common knowledge,” Ekirch says.

An English doctor wrote, for example, that the ideal time for study and contemplation was between “first sleep” and “second sleep.” Chaucer tells of a character in the Canterbury Tales that goes to bed following her “firste sleep.” And, explaining the reason why working class conceived more children, a doctor from the 1500s reported that they typically had sex after their first sleep.

Ekirch’s book At Day’s Close: Night in Times Past is replete with such examples.

But just what did people do with these extra twilight hours? Pretty much what you might expect.

Most stayed in their beds and bedrooms, sometimes reading, and often they would use the time to pray. Religious manuals included special prayers to be said in the mid-sleep hours.

Others might smoke, talk with co-sleepers, or have sex. Some were more active and would leave to visit with neighbours.

As we know, this practice eventually died out. Ekirch attributes the change to the advent of street lighting and eventually electric indoor light, as well as the popularity of coffee houses. Author Craig Koslofsky offers a further theory in his book Evening’s Empire. With the rise of more street lighting, night stopped being the domain of criminals and sub-classes and became a time for work or socializing. Two sleeps were eventually considered a wasteful way to spend these hours.

No matter why the change happened, shortly after the turn of the 20th century the concept of two sleeps had vanished from common knowledge.

Until about 1990.
The Science

Two sleeps per night may have been the method of antiquity, but tendencies towards it still linger in modern man. There could be an innate biological preference for two sleeps, given the right circumstances.

In the early ‘90s, psychiatrist Thomas Wehr of National Institutes of Mental Health conducted a study on photoperiodicity (exposure to light), and its effect on sleep patterns.

In his study, fifteen men spent four weeks with their daylight artificially restricted. Rather than staying up and active the usual sixteen hours per day, they would stay up only ten. The other fourteen hours they would be in a closed, dark room, where they would rest or sleep as much as possible. This mimics the days in mid-winter, with short daylight and long nights.

At first, the participants would sleep huge stretches of time, likely making up for sleep debt that’s common among modern people. Once they had caught up on their sleep though, a strange thing started to happen.

They began to have two sleeps.

Over a twelve hour period, the participants would typically sleep for about four or five hours initially, then wake for several hours, then sleep again until morning. They slept not more than eight hours total.

The middle hours of the night, between two sleeps, was characterized by unusual calmness, likened to meditation. This was not the middle-of-the-night toss-and-turn that many of us experienced. The individuals did not stress about falling back asleep, but used the time to relax.

Russell Foster, professor of circadian neuroscience at Oxford, points out that even with standard sleep patterns, this night waking isn’t always cause for concern. “Many people wake up at night and panic,” he says. “I tell them that what they are experiencing is a throwback to the bi-modal sleep pattern.”

Outside of a scientific setting, this kind of sleep pattern is still attainable, but it does require changing our modern, electric lifestyle. Very cool person J. D. Moyer did just that. He and his family intentionally went an entire month with no electric light.

In the winter months, this meant a lot of darkness and a lot of sleep. Moyer writes “…I would go to bed really early, like 8:30, and then get up around 2:30am.  This was alarming at first, but then I remembered that this sleep pattern was quite common in pre-electric light days.  When this happened I would end up reading or writing by candlelight for an hour or two, then going back to bed.”

Moyer didn’t set out to reproduce our ancestors sleep pattern, it just happened as a byproduct of a lot of dark hours.
Should We Revive Two Sleeps?

Although history shows that two sleeping was common, and science indicates that it is (in some conditions) natural, there is no indication that it is better. Two sleeps may leave you feeling more rested, but this could simply be because you are intentionally giving yourself more time to rest, relax, and sleep. Giving the same respect to the single, eight-hour sleep should be just as effective.

Note too that two sleeping needs a lot of darkness – darkness that is only possible naturally during the winter months. The greater levels of daylight during summer and other seasons would make two sleeping difficult, or even impossible.

Perhaps two sleeping is merely a coping mechanism to get through the long, cold, boring nights of the winter. Today, we don’t need to cope. So long as we give our sleep the time and respect it needs, getting the “standard” eight hours of sleep should be fine.

But next time you wake up at 2 AM and can’t sleep, just remember your great, great, great, great, great grandfather. He did the same thing every night.
Update

Well this article proved exceedingly popular! Thank you to everyone who visited, or took the time to leave a comment. I would encourage new visitors to have a read through the comments below for some interesting ideas and perspectives. I learned two things in particular:

1. This is far more common that I thought. A lot of commenters either practice, or used to practice this kind of sleep.

2. Another possible reason for two sleeps is tending the fire during the night. Several clever readers noted that in order to keep a fire running through the night, we would need to get up and tend it.

Inspired by this article

foodandhealthblog.wordpress.com/2008/04/11/can-fruit-be-considered-primeval-food/
I started (again!) questioning my very "instincts" and this was what followed:

On a BASIC level,

Can we really get to our "primeval" instincts when we are surrounded by fake foods?
I mean, most of the foods we have available now did not exist "back then"or if they did, they are very much different in shape, taste, nutritional profile.
Therefore how can I fully apply instinctive eating into such a agricultural/confusing/sick present time?

and more PHYLOSOFICally..

Can we really get to "THE truth" when our thoughts are distorted by man made duality?

(I m starting to think dualism originated together with the neolithic era.
Not sure exactly why, but I have got this feeling.)

Loren Cordain - Origins and Evolution of the Western diet: Health implications  for the 21st Century

Quote
There is growing awareness that the profound changes in the environment (e.g. in diet and other lifestyle conditions) that began with the introduction of agriculture and animal husbandry approximately 10,000 years ago occurred too recently on an evolutionary timescale for the human genome to adjust. In conjunction with this discordance between our ancient, genetically-determined biology and the nutritional, cultural and activity patterns of contemporary western populations, many of the so-called diseases of civilization have emerged. In the U.S. and most western countries, diet-related chronic diseases represent the single largest cause of morbidity and mortality. These diseases are epidemic in contemporary, westernized populations and typically afflict 50-65 % of the adult population, yet are rare or non-existent in hunter-gatherers and other less westernized people. Evidence gleaned over the past three decades now indicates that virtually all so-called diseases of civilization have multifactorial dietary elements that underlie their etiology, along with other environmental agents and genetic susceptibility. This talk will trace the origins of the Western diet and discuss the health implications.

Dr. Cordain is a Professor in the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. His research emphasis over the past 15 years has focused upon the evolutionary and anthropological basis for diet, health and well being in modern humans.

Dr. Cordain's scientific publications have examined the nutritional characteristics of worldwide hunter-gatherer diets as well as the nutrient composition of wild plant and animal foods consumed by foraging humans. Over the past five years his work has focused upon the adverse health effects of the high dietary glycemic load that is ubiquitous in the typical western diet. A number of his recent papers have proposed an endocrine link between dietary induced hyperinsulinemia and acne. Currently, Dr. Cordain's research team is exploring the connection between dietary elements that increase intestinal permeability (primarily saponins and lectins) and autoimmune disease, particularly multiple sclerosis.

Dr. Cordain is the author of more than 100 peer review publications, many of which were funded by both private and governmental agencies. He is the recent recipient of the Scholarly Excellence award at Colorado State University for his contributions into understanding optimal human nutrition. He has lectured extensively world wide, and has written three popular books (The Paleo Diet, John Wiley & Sons; The Paleo Diet for Athletes, Rodale Press; The Dietary Cure for Acne) summarizing his research findings.

I find this video quiet interesting and sheds insights specifically also on the paleodiet.
Enjoy!

Off Topic / Ode to Life - a poem

Hi guys, yesterday I went to the lake in the property where I am staying and spent almost an entire morning bathing (in water and sun),  being naked, dancing and words came for me to assemble them and to form this poem.
I thought sharing with you would be a nice idea.

Ode to Life
by Aura Licht

Oh my beloved Golden Sun!
I yearn for thy warmth every day.

Giver of Life, embodyment of the gods most high, to you I give my Spirit for it to be infused with Thy everburning Fire.

Oh Silvery Moon, cast the darkness of Ignorance away from my path, for the black shadows of the night are devoid of Wisdom.

Oh Mighty Winds, there is not softer touch than the one of your gentle fingers, invisibly shaping the stubborn gross Matter of my existence.

Oh the whole of Creation, there are no sweeter words of love to Nature than in the songs of Thy creatures  abiding in the Forest joyously singing odes to Thee.

Oh dear  Mankind, there is no food that alone could ever sustain your fleshes and nourish your spirit once deprived of its divine spark within.

(The) I cannot exist without Thee. It is thanks to  You that (the) I came to be, in order to experience both the Inner and Outer aspects of Reality.

But no longer the “I” is going to fool me and make me believe we are separated.
For the pristine Waters of eternal Consciousness where once You arose from, are but a liquid mirror reflecting Thy neverending Mercy I am bathing in.

Off Topic / We are the white-rice of our race
« on: August 24, 2013, 08:27:11 am »
One more thought I had today.
As I was thinking about cultures from different parts of the world, I stopped and looked at my life and sensed I pretty much grew up with no culture at all..

I never felt a "national identity" nor a "family identity".

Always felt belonging to somewhere /someone else. Not really clear where/who though...

That gave rise to the following:

I feel white (and not by chance my skin is white as well) as a brand new canvas where I am now ready to write a totally new culture, this time a more right brained oriented, infused with ancient tribal knowledge but most important of all, infused with Consciousness.

Perhaps white is the color (or better the discoloration) of a human race spoiled of all its core values, waiting to be inscribed anew.

A processed race. Like  processed white rice where each individual is but a tiny grain of 100% starch which - by the way - resemble so closely the profile of today modern diets.

Civilization is dissecting people and food more and more everyday, trying to get to the "material core", thinking that by simplifyng we could get to understand ourselves and the world but by doing so, we are basically cutting out all the fundamental parts that makeup the whole.. and the inner essence of things slips farther and further away from us.

If only we could see this..

I believe the reason we left the forest (the Garden of Eden) was to get conscious and exercise the "free will" to choose between "good" and "evil".
The "good" being conscious co-operation with the technology of Nature, the second being the development of a finite, primitive and deadly man_made technology.

I aim to become a true Earthling, summoning the savage spirits of my ancestors lying dormant within the cells of my body.
Blood is the true imperishable legacy to this Planet. The Vessel of our primal identity.

My skin will embody the essence of fire and it will be red at the sight.
It will be finally one with the soil. The same soil that hath created it.

General Discussion / Wild snakes of the local river
« on: August 24, 2013, 06:23:44 am »
Here are some sources of food for some people of this region.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunectes not sure which one of the four subspecies..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boa_constrictor

Next week, probably on saturday, I will meet one of the village elders who is supposed to know just about everything of this area.
I ll ask him about the flora and fauna and share knowledge in general with me.

I asked some locals to take me hunting with them but they refuse since "it is exclusively for men" heh
but they told me they will share the snake with me, if I want.

I noticed that the thought of eating fishes/seafood and also reptiles does not disgust me as much as eating herbivorous animals. I cannot stand their fleshes.

Off Topic / Modern Kids Stories affected by the virus of civilization
« on: August 24, 2013, 02:14:03 am »
Today I was at the local school to read stories to kids and to my surprise, they came with a book about a funny paleo child that used to paint animals in caves and everytime he did that, bisons, deers, all kind of birds, mammuth etc... would gather around him.
Unfortunately though, people from his tribe blinded with greed, took advantage of the situation and killed most of the animals so that they ended up without food and instead of hunting/gathering, humans became agriculturists..

I did not like the ending - that came totally unexpected as I did not know the book - but I quickly turned its message to a more proactive one - that is respect and care for the natural resources around.

And it came just about right because we went to pick some cherimoyas right after. ;D

This event stimulated some thoughts into my head, like

  • Yet again  we can see that "total faith in civilization"is  lurking at every corner and it is scary the way and the means it uses to propagate itself like a deadly virus..

  • It was sad and alarming at the same time to notice that the writers of this story pointed to this passage in history of man as if it was a "blessing". And it is ever present  in civilization..

  • Faith in agriculture is same to faith in technology.
We are moving towards an era where the food will be made of plastic and 3d printed foods http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/jun/04/nasa-3d-printer-space-food and the premises are just the same as for the gmo`s - saving world from hunger.
This time we will get supersick and die instead of bugs and billion people will be exterminated within maybe 1 generation?

I sincerely cannot believe how people can still buy into this delusion.. >:

Off Topic / Queen Rain and the St(c)reams of Inner Awakening
« on: August 23, 2013, 07:05:16 am »
Late this afternoon I had a walk in the forest within the property I live.

I enjoy taking off my shoes and feel the humid, wet and soft sensation of mud and stones underneath the soles of my feet.

Looked at my legs; so "dirty" my mother would say, "now go and wash yourself".

Fortunately for me, she could not see.
Unfortunately for her, she could not see.

Keep walking, listening to the birds singing, a quick look at the horizon, farewelling the Sun.
Suddenly, a voice come from the forest behind me.
It is the sound of Energy transformed into Matter.

It is the Rain. Queen Rain.
As she gently flies with her invisible  wings, raindrops like tears bless the creature of the World Below, in a playful cry of joy.

(I hear she is coming. She is just there behind  but did not yet touched me).

The sky gets dark. The wind start to blow. Trees, palms and shrubs are shaken by it, like impatiently waiting to be embraced by the watery arms of Queen Rain.
Seems like all Nature bows and waves to her coming.

And I am standing there, in the midst of this wild temple, waiting for my turn to become united with the Flying Waters of Creation.

When finally reached by its liquid fingers, shivers like quick st(c)reams flow down my body, awakening those inner ones, running underneath the layers of my bodily microcosm.

And suddenly, I feel so nourished, so refreshed by this touch of Life no human invention could ever replicate.

Hi guys,
last night I dreamt I was swimming in a river and catched a healthy  big salmon  plus, walking on the shore a little later, I found a big squid.  :o
I was with an imaginary friend and he speared its brain out.
We sat and ate the squid first but not the head..
