General Discussion / Quick question regarding Protein/Fat ratio
« on: December 10, 2010, 01:59:17 am »
Hi,

If you wanted to eat say 200g of fat in a meal, would you choose for example a piece of meat weighing say 600g that approximately looked 1/3 fat?

Sorry if this is possibly the most dull/simple question of all time!

Hi,

Guys please post any info regarding your meal frequency (Really interested in getting a wide range of thoughts/views);

1,2,3 meals a day?

Eat within a certain time period, then fast the rest?

Variable?

Does anyone here eat 3 meals a day?

Also time of day would be of interest as well.

Cheers

General Discussion / Raw Wild Game
« on: December 06, 2010, 07:54:24 pm »
Hey,

I have just found a local butchers that sells game. I asked him what they sell, and he said "Pheasant, Partridge, Grouse, Rabbit, Woodpigeon, Wild boar, Venison".

Which of these would people recommend?

Anything I need to check with the butcher prior to buying for eating raw?

He also said that I could request something and he would try and get it in. So any other recommendations for wild game?

Which is the best value for money?

Thanks,

Phil

General Discussion / Minor setback - Any comments would be good
« on: December 02, 2010, 01:49:54 am »
Hey,

Been RP for a while now, but just recently switched to one large meal a day. Earlier on in my RP experience I don't think I was eating enough calories, and felt cold at times as a result. I have been increasing my protein and fat consumption of late, and my temperature has much improved.

It is a bit too early to say whether one meal a day is a success yet or not.

This morning I ate more meat than I have done before.
225g of lambs heart, 250g of lamb breast, and 225g of lamb shoulder - all grass fed from my usual supplier.
I am obviously increasing my amounts as I am only eating one meal a day now, as oppose to three. It did feel like a lot to get through, and towards the end I was flagging somewhat, although I wouldn't say I felt full. More just sick of eating lamb!

I felt OK for the 3,4 or 5 hours, and then I started to feel sickly. I have chucked up a couple of times now today, and felt pretty sickly most of the day. I am through it now though.

I know people have mentioned that excessive fat intake can make you sick, however I am fairly convinced that I have eaten that amount of fat before and been fine. I estimate the fat content was about 200-250g.

However, I have never eaten that much protein before. Could this have made me sick?

Or could it be just that the large volume of food that made me sick? If this is the case, could two meals a day be more optimal for myself?

Or could it be dodgy lamb? (Usual supplier, never had any problems before, organic/grass-fed)

What are your opinions on this?

Cheers,

Phil

General Discussion / Suddenly really gone off raw kidney
« on: November 28, 2010, 08:39:11 pm »
Hey,

Despite being relatively new to raw paleo, I initially had no issues eating raw organs. I ate liver, kidney, heart and tongue.

I have suddenly gone massively off kidney. I don't know if I read it somewhere or if I have told myself this, but I can't get it out of my head that they smell like piss!! Apologies for the graphic description!

Is their strong smell that of piss? They do filter urine I believe.

Or have I just told myself this?

Also, could going off the taste be my bodies way of letting me know that I don't need this in my diet?

Are raw kidneys very nutritious?

I'm really into raw heart at the moment. Very tasty!

General Discussion / How many grams of meat per day?
« on: November 20, 2010, 04:22:32 am »
Hey,

Just wondered amongst you all how much meat you consume on average per day (in grams ideally)?

250g, 350g, 500g, or more?

The reason I ask is I have been increasing my meat consumption, and I just wanted to know what the upper limits tend to be.

Also what tend to be the upper limits regarding fat consumption?

200g = 1800kcal or more? 250g = 2250kcal???

Thanks,

General Discussion / Question for Tyler
« on: November 20, 2010, 04:17:45 am »
Hey Tyler,

Hope you are well. A few quick questions sir;

I know you are a carb eater, and that ZC did not suit you. Do you know about how many grams of carbs you eat per day? Or about how much?

Also, the majority of your carbs is raw fruits, yer? What fruits do you go for in the UK?

Finally, when you started your raw paleo adventure your adrenals were burnt-out. Did you struggle to tolerate the fruits at first, or have they always caused no issue?

Are you concerned about your fructose intake? Hehe, I expect not.

Cheers,

Phil

General Discussion / Colon cleanse
« on: November 11, 2010, 06:14:35 pm »
Hey,

Anyone done a Colon cleanse? What are your thoughts on them? Beneficial or not?

Also, I believe a recommended product is Robert Grays' Intestinal Cleanse. Anyone had any experience with this?
Or anyone recommend any other cleanse?

General Discussion / Liver Flush question
« on: November 11, 2010, 06:10:38 pm »
Hi,

Can you do the Liver Flush mentioned by Goodsamaritan using the dreaded Organic, Free-Range, Supermarket Eggs?

I cannot seem to source any decent eggs anywhere!

Thanks,

General Discussion / Gut bacteria
« on: October 26, 2010, 03:27:37 am »
Hey,

Does eating raw meat repopulate your gut bacteria, or is it only high meat that does this?

I currently take a probiotic supplement. Any thoughts on this?

(I don't do dairy by the way)

Ok, I know I have asked a few members of this forum (Tyler/PaleoPhil) this question already, but I would like to start a discussion on this to get everyone's take on it.

This question keeps on inhabiting my thoughts, and I'm sick of it. Hehe.

Right, my adrenals are not at 100%. To ease adrenal stress it is suggested to 1)make digestion as easy as possible, and 2)to reduce blood sugar fluctuations.

Ok, so when eating fruit it is ideal to eat it on its own (optimum digestion), however this spikes blood sugar. On the other hand eating it with a protein/fat source buffers the blood sugar spike, but has a negative effect on digestion.

Tyler says that everyone is different, however in his case he opted for the optimum digestion of eating fruit on its own, and had success this way. His blood sugar issues corrected themselves once his digestion was sorted.

PaleoPhil, again thinks everyone is different, but for him he was able to tolerate fruits better when combined with a fat source.

I think AV believes fruits are best combined with a fat source to buffer the blood sugar spike, although I am not 100% if this is his current stance.

The normal advice given tends to be for people with adrenal burnout to combine carbs with a protein/fat source.

Any other thoughts on this? Which way is the best way to go? Or is it all individual?

Or could Bitter Melon Fruit intake be the answer? Or perhaps only eating fruits with a low glycemic impact?

I defo feel I need the carbs, and don't really want to go ZC.

I know I am probably over analysing this, but when something is in your brain its hard to get rid of it!

Cheers guys,

Phil

As per the title,

Can you make high meat from frozen meat, or is this not ideal?

General Discussion / Question for Goodsamaritan - re Bitter Melon Fruit
« on: October 17, 2010, 11:08:31 pm »
Hi Goodsamaritan,

I have bought some Bitter Melon fruit (Karela) from a local Indian supermarket. Have no idea of the freshness, where its from, or how long it has been sitting on the shelf. Is this an issue?

Anyway, what is the best way to eat it?

Do you eat the outer pimply skin part (Surely not)? Do you peal it? Or do you just wash it, and then eat everything?

Do you eat the seeds and the white middle portion?

Or is it the harder green inner layer you eat, having peeled off the outer layer?

Do you eat it with carbs to improve glucose tolerance, or can it be eaten at any time to help with this?

Cheers for the tips.

General Discussion / Very Low Carb - Low Temp - Increasing Carbs?
« on: October 15, 2010, 04:04:23 am »
Hey there,

I have been RPVLC over the last few days and have started to feel really cold. I am thinking it may be due to the VLC intake.

Any thoughts?

If you were to increase carbs on a RP diet, do you think fruit is the best way to go, or maybe raw carrots or salad perhaps?

Or perhaps raw coconut butter, or even cooked starches?

Again, your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

General Discussion / One meal a day
« on: October 13, 2010, 10:27:07 pm »
I would be interested in people's experiences on Raw Paleo one meal a day?

Find it useful?

I would be especially interested to hear from anyone who has used this approach with adrenal fatigue?

Cheers

Hi,

Think the title of this post says all that needs to be asked?

"OK to combine different animal proteins/fats in the same meal?"

General Discussion / Constipation
« on: October 03, 2010, 08:40:55 pm »
Hello to the lovely members of this forum,

How do people get on as regards constipation? (Especially those on zero-carb diets!)

I have been struggling of late, and I guess it is of no surprise, with my increased protein intake (I normally on average have 3 meals a day, with a protein portion approximately 150g-ish in weight with each, although this is sometimes quite a fatty portion/ sometimes it is fairly lean like an organ meat).

My protein is normally in the form of red meats, liver, lamb, beef, and so also I believe the large quantities of iron can also have an impact in this area. I had liver four times last week.

I still eat some starches (Raw carrot), but no fruits. And I eat plenty of fat, although I am currently trying to eat even more.

Just wondered how people get on with this, especially on an all animal based diet.

Thanks

General Discussion / Best bones to get sizeable amounts of marrow
« on: September 28, 2010, 10:25:38 pm »
Hey guys,

Just done my fortnightly visit to my butcher. I was really pleased because it looked like I was walking away with lots of bone marrow, because I had acquired numerous pieces of bone marrow bones.

However, having got home it appears that there is pitiful amounts of bone marrow in these bones. I have just gone through four chunks of bone and have got minimal marrow.

Are there specific bones to ask for in order to get maximum marrow?

Cheers

General Discussion / Fat recommendations
« on: September 25, 2010, 11:32:22 pm »
Hey guys,

I need to add some serious extra calories to my raw meals in the form of fat. I already eat enough protein.

I currently struggle to get decent eggs to eat raw, and I have not yet located a decent source for fish yet either.

I currently ask my butcher for the fattiest cuts of beef/lamb, I get bone marrow bones, and I ask for additional animal fat trimmings.

Is there any fat source other than these that I could ask for specifically? Is there a particular area on a cow/lamb that is pure fat that people ask for?

Any particular favourites? I get the impression that bone marrow is a favourite with most. Not tried suet yet (Don't even know if this is available)

Also, does the fat trimmings people get tend to have like a chewy thin skin like membrane round the outside? I have been pulling the inner fatty portion out of this membrane.
Do people know what I am mean, and if so, do they just get it down them, or do they remove it?

Cheers,

General Discussion / Storage of animal fat
« on: September 22, 2010, 12:03:34 am »
Hey guys,

Does animal fat, and bone marrow need to be stored in the fridge? Or with it being saturated fat can it stay at room temperature?
My supply is currently in air-tight plastic wrapping in the boot of my car.

Does bone marrow occasionally have really darkish bits around the outside edge of the inner bit? Not a lot really, just wondered if people still eat that bit as well. Kinda like the occasional dark bits you get in an avocado.

Also, just thought I would mention that I am really getting into the RPD thing now.
I can happily munch away at raw beef, lamb, fat, bone marrow and liver, and it has only been a few weeks since I started!
All 100% grass fed of course.

Thanks for any advice

General Discussion / Raw eggs
« on: September 19, 2010, 07:09:24 pm »
Hi,

I want to add raw eggs to my already increasing raw diet.

However I am concerned about Salmonella, mainly because I can currently only get Organic Free-range eggs from the supermarket (Tesco). It says on the box that the chickens are vaccinated against Salmonella, which I guess is not the best of moves!

What is the general opinion on this?

Is it not worth the risk, unless I can find a good local supplier?
Or would you go for the raw option over cooked even with supermarket eggs?

Cheers

Hi,

What is the best/simplest way to increase your fat intake during a raw meat meal, without also increasing your protein intake as well.

I already ask my butcher for the fattiest bits of meat, however I would like to try adding more fat to my diet. I want to do this without increasing my protein intake any further.

I used to add Coconut oil/Olive oil to my meals, but I have been advised against this recently.

Cheers folks
