Hot Topics / Creativity
« on: December 12, 2010, 08:30:12 am »
Raw Paleo makes me feel healthy and positive, but to be quite honest I have had much more creativity when I've fucked things up...hungover, caffeinated, carbed up...I seem to write and compose more easily and pull together ideas better.

Is this something that changes as you get into 1 year plus of raw paleo, or is it simply that modern vices give you an abuse-fuelled creativity that you simply can't get from being healthy?

Health / Ulcers
« on: November 29, 2010, 04:12:10 am »
I've been hardcore raw paleo for a few weeks now with no deviations, and have gone VLC - about 30g carb a day.

I feel ok but have had a couple of ulcers which I don't often get. Do you know what could cause this?

Presumably not vit b deficiency as I mostly eat red meat. My diet is mostly beef tongue, hearts, mince/ground beef, bone marrow, suet and for fruit a bit of melon or berries, or sometimes grapes. The occasional beef kidney.

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Sprint fitness/interval etc inside
« on: November 27, 2010, 02:20:54 am »
Now summers gone I can't go to the park and sprint, so wondering if anyone has ideas for what I can use for sprint (all out sprint, then full rest) and also Tabata training in my house.

It would be good if it didn't work the muscles too hard, like say press ups, as I'm lifting weights as well.

General Discussion / My jerky often tastes off
« on: November 19, 2010, 08:13:00 pm »
When I make jerky it's really random. About 50% of the time it's nice, and the rest of the time it tastes 'off'...hard to explain but it's not pleasant to eat...a slightly unpleasant taste that puts me off. Sometimes this happens within a batch and sometimes a whole batch is fine and then another one's bad.

I've used commercial lean roasts and ones from my grass fed supplier and they're both inconsistent.

Someone suggested ventilation before, but I can't see how it couldn't be ventilated enough. The hole is slightly bigger than Lex's if anything (but not too much). Have also tried 100 and 150w bulbs. I think the 150w was cooking the meat and spoiling it in the hot weather, but the 100w jerky can still taste bad.

Is jerky just inconsistent in taste?...should I eat it?...or do you have any ideas?

General Discussion / Cheap cod liver oil
« on: November 19, 2010, 06:44:35 pm »
I'm thinking of taking a cheap cod liver oil to boost my vitamin D over the winter, as I have been tested with deficiency in the past FWIW and raw meat doesn't seem to contain much. I don't really want to import blue ice from dr ron's.

Does anyone have any experience with the health food shop brands?

Or any other ideas....do the lizard or human sun lamps work?

General Discussion / Bitter Melon available in the UK
« on: October 17, 2010, 01:40:54 am »
Hi. Some people wanted to know about getting bitter melon in the UK. You can get it from Indian/Bengali grocers and markets. It's called 'karela'

Not tried it myself.

Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Melons
« on: September 28, 2010, 02:47:56 am »
What do you think of melon - honeydew, galia, canteloupe etc.?

They're all the same family as watermelons (Cucurbitaceae), and presumably are fairly closely related to plants that are very edible in their wild form..e.g. watermelon has sweet varieties found in the wild in Africa.

I find it's easier to eat melon and not crave more carbs, and also you can eat a lot as it's so much water and it satisfies.

Also it's easy on the stomach somehow...if I eat 2 apples it can make me uncomfortable sometimes.

Suggestion Box / Website loading problem
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:22:43 pm »
Whenever I visit the website for the first time and don't have a cookie, it always fails to load. 'internet explorer/firefox could not open this page' or somesuch. Then when I try again it works.

This happens on many different computers and different connections, so it seems to be the site. I'm UK based if it matters.

I used to think it was no problem, but now I do think we have a bit of a mission to educate people a little about raw paleo...for example some people have kids and are worried about having a bad image.

If people visit the site and it doesn't load a lot of them will go away without trying again.

Personals / UK - anyone have a surplus of pemmican?
« on: September 08, 2010, 11:14:31 pm »
Long shot, but does anyone over here have a surplus of grass-fed pemmican, or could plan to have.

If so maybe we could come to a mutually beneficial arrangement...I could do with a good quantity.

General Discussion / Help me decide my next step
« on: August 22, 2010, 10:21:36 pm »
I don't expect anyone to solve the age old carbs/zero carb debate, but I'm having problems deciding my next step and wondering if you can help me tease out the right course of action at all.

I had unexpected success going zero carb for 2 weeks, and basically felt fine on this diet. I tried eating an apple a couple of days ago to see what happened and found it too sweet. Since then I've eaten fruit <30g carb a day and it was ok...maybe my pancreas just needed to get back into it.

I feel fine, however now if I eat carbs I get bad carb cravings as obviously I'm not fully adapted to low carb.

So I'm thinking what to do now. I feel like going zero carb for a while, but have some concerns mostly based on what Lex has said. His feeling was that VLC would probably be best for most people.

I'm concerned about the ability to generate short term bursts of energy being lost, as it's important for how I train. Does anyone have details or studies for this? I'm interested to know if I could go ZC for a while without permanently compromising this...at what point do you start to lose it?

Also, my ability to exercise is greater when eating carbs atm so it creates a positive cycle...exercise helps adaption.

I feel ZC calling though, the feeling of being free from cravings.

General Discussion / How much bacteria do you lose by freezing?
« on: August 12, 2010, 10:38:05 pm »
I know freezing puts bacteria into suspended animation does it also kill a proportion?

If I freeze slightly high meat mix, then defrost it and eat the next day, how much bacteria am I getting?

Cheers, Josh

General Discussion / Do your high meat jars keep the smell in?
« on: August 09, 2010, 07:49:18 pm »
I've got these jars with a rubber seal and clamp down lid to hold it tight. The smells still getting out though. They're possibly not the real deal.

I was thinking of trying screw top, but wondered what type you have and if it works.

Display Your Culinary Creations / Lamb and mint jerky
« on: July 26, 2010, 12:52:29 am »
Just that. Lamb steaks with a bit of salt and lots of dried mint. I recommend fairly thin strips so it dries in 2ish days.

Just for fun, as the fat in lamb won't keep long, but tastes delicious.

I was just searching around doing some research.

As you may know, mitochondria in liver cells break down fat into ketone bodies that we can use for energy.

This sports article has some good information about exercise and increasing mitochondrial density. However, what jumped out was it has a mention of a study where rats were fed dessicated thyroid, and it dramatically boosted mitochondria in the heart and liver. I have been unable to track down the study. Let me know if you have any luck.

This may be very useful for us adapting to low carb eating. I'm definitely going to give it a try.

Don't eat too much though people.

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Working, Training, Eating, Sleeping...how?
« on: July 07, 2010, 03:58:31 pm »
I'm having problems timing all of this at the moment.

I sometimes have to exercise in the evening because of work, and some activities with other people are arranged around this like combat training.

It seems to make sense to eat after exercise to give the body protein...at least that's the standard idea.

However, when I have a raw meat and fat meal, I seem to get an energy boost between 2-4 hours afterwards and can't sleep for hours. That might be ok...but I have work early the next day.

I thought of eating in the day and training later, but think I will still need food after. This will be even more true when I start lifting weights.

What do you do about this?

General Discussion / My house stinks
« on: July 01, 2010, 03:51:34 am »
Meat scraps in the bin, bones left too long in the fridge before I get the marrow out, lunch containers I haven't washed up...meat in fridge I forgot about.

Yeh, obviously the solution is to deal with it all straight away but if you're busy and tired for a few days...

Any thoughts?

Your thoughts? Good luck to anyone recreating that diet. I thought it was important as it may add some weight to the idea of eating a varied diet not just meat and fat.

Health / Sitting on public transport
« on: June 09, 2010, 05:54:16 pm »
I try to avoid sitting in chairs as I think it's unhealthy and has bad cumulative effects on the body.

I have an issue with public transport. I can stand, but at the end of a long day I feel tired and want to sit...especially if I'm spending a couple of hours a day on there.

I've tried sitting or squatting on the floor, which can be ok, but when it starts to fill up people don't see you and it's a bit dangerous.

Has anyone found any better solutions?

Exercise / Bodybuilding / How big?
« on: June 09, 2010, 05:49:41 pm »
I find it hard to decide how big and strong to get. At the moment I'm fairly lean and do mostly bodyweight stuff.

I'm very tempted to start the weights and get big and strong. Not extreme bodybuilder, just functional strength and a good size. It's got a lot of advantages for life in our society. I can't help thinking it's not natural though and will have some bad effects later on.

It looks like our ancestors were runners first and foremost, fairly strong, but mostly lean and fit.

What are your thoughts?

Hot Topics / Using Xylitol as a carb source?
« on: May 28, 2010, 03:03:58 pm »
It's just given me diarrhea, that was mentioned but didn't know it would be so definite. I guess that's out then, but leaving the post for posterity.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
For those of us that eat carbs, what do you think of using Xylitol as a carb source?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylitol

OK, it's not paleo but it is naturally occurring in paleo foods like berries.

The main benefit would be it's extremely low effect on blood sugar. It's GI is 11 compared to berries c.30, sucrose 100.

Also it doesn't contain any unknown quantities like some fruits and it's easy to measure and store.

Downsides: it doesn't contain any micronutrients...but some of us have got that covered with raw meat. And in fact it may be a positive not to contain any antioxidants...e.g. the study that showed antioxidants reduced the body's own ability to deal with oxidation.

General Discussion / Law on jerky UK, shelf life
« on: May 12, 2010, 05:30:42 pm »
Hi. Has anyone got a link to the legislation on selling jerky in the UK or the name of the law? I believe it was said on here that the meat has to be cooked or cured, but would like to check out the situation.

Also, how long does jerky made just by dehydration last out of the fridge before starting to taste 'high' or 'strange'...I don't know cause I've always eaten it!

My friend has been trying a cooked paleoish diet, and wants to keep going a bit more seriously. He's not gonna go raw, but I want to try and help him stay on something relatively healthy.

He has basically been avoiding a lot of carbs in the week apart from a bit of sugar in coffee, eating cooked meat and veggies, getting some extra fat from eggs - without measuring calories. He loses weight from cutting carbs, but has lapses at the weekend when he drinks beer and gets takeaways.

So really two questions: I have suggested to him that it's a bad idea to randomly cut carbs in the week, then lapse as it's making his body go in and out of ketosis, trying to adapt but always breaking it with a carb hit. My feeling is that he should eat more carbs in the week to keep ability to deal with it...something like 1/3 calories from protein, 1/3 from fat and 1/3 from carbs which some bodybuilders favour. Maybe getting carbs from fruit and cooked tubers.

What do you think he can do about macronutrient ratio, given that he will continue with the occasional beers and takeaway?

The other question is given that he's not eating raw, how much green veg etc do you think is a good idea to eat. He won't be getting so many micronutrients from raw meat, so is the best compromise to eat veg and salad, or something else?

Oh yes, I would have thought omega 3's from fish like tuna would be a good compromise as well.??

Welcome your thoughts.
