Hot Topics / Re: Acid/Alkaline Theory of Disease Is Nonsense?
« on: September 29, 2011, 01:09:24 pm »
I followed Dr.Young's "pH Miracle for Weight Loss" pretty much to the letter for 4-5 months.
I read that article during this time and it pissed me off.
I don't know who's book or website "Gabe Mirkin, M.D." is writing about, but I got the distinct impression that he has never read any of dr.Young's books or any of the other acid/alkaline books that I have thumbed through.
I have no idea who he is trying to discredit because, it's like he doesn't understand the acid/alkaline theory.

"Anyone who tells you that certain foods or supplements make your stomach or blood acidic does not understand nutrition."

I have not read any claims by dr.Young or others that you can change the acidity of the blood or the stomach more than extremely slightly (I'm talking hundredths of a pH point)

The idea is that all your body's processes are acidifying except for digestion.  Digestion actually uses up acid, leaving behind an ash to alkalize your body.  If you eat foods that require a lot of acid to be produced, it has a net positive affect, drawing more acid out of your body.

The way I look at it is, say I'm going to eat 2000 calories today.  I can either eat 2000 calories of food that is very easy to digest, and my stomach will have to produce very little acid to break it down.
Or I can eat a whole bunch of "alkalizing" foods for which I'll have to produce more stomach acid to break down therefore slightly reducing the acid levels in my body.
It's something that you can appreciate when you are used to eating alkaline, and you opt for a couple acidic meals in row...heart burn.  You didn't need nearly as much acid to digest that McDonalds or what ever and now you're left with an excess.
That's why dr.young calls the stomach an alkalizing organ, not because he's an idiot, but because it is the only organ that consumes acid stores in your body.

"You should not believe that it matters whether foods are acidic or alkaline, because no foods change the acidity of anything in your body except your urine. Your stomach is so acidic that no food can change its acidity. Citrus fruits, vinegar, and vitamins such as ascorbic acid or folic acid do not change the acidity of your stomach or your bloodstream. An entire bottle of calcium pills or antacids would not change the acidity of your stomach for more than a few minutes."

Yes your stomach controls it's acidity.  That is the point.  The more alkalizing things you put in it, the more work you will involuntarily do in creating a stronger stomach acid which has a net alkalizing affect on your body.  The body gets rid of excess acidity through your urine, so the more acid you put in that body, the harder your kidneys have to work to pass it through.  the theory is that your body resists this extra work and begins storing the acid in your fat.  Then your body resists again when you try to burn off the fat, because the kidneys then have to go to work dealing with that acid.  For me, it explained why I would always hit a wall when trying to lose weight.

"All foods that leave your stomach are acidic. Then they enter your intestines where secretions from your pancreas neutralize the stomach acids. So no matter what you eat, the food in stomach is acidic and the food in the intestines is alkaline."

Yes, Gabe Mirkin, M.D, is probably absolutely right about this, and I don't think dr,Young would disagree with him.  Who the hell is this guy arguing with?

"When you take in more protein than your body needs, your body cannot store it, so the excess amino acids are converted to organic acids that would acidify your blood. But your blood never becomes acidic because as soon as the proteins are converted to organic acids, calcium leaves your bones to neutralize the acid and prevent any change in pH. Because of this, many scientists think that taking in too much protein may weaken bones to cause osteoporosis."

Dr Young also says that your body draws calcium out of your bones to keep your blood pH back to normal.  That sounds like a very shitty consequence of eating too many acidic foods to me.

Anyway I think you get the point.  My personal opinon about the alkaline diet is that it probably increases longevity, is certainly good for weight loss, and cancer prevention, but I have observed that I had low energy levels on it, and I get the same vibe from others I know who were on it, and also from people like Dr. Young himself.

I think that this guy wrote a very slanted and unresearched article, and he is probably a closed minded old fart.

I would be interested to know what Dr. Young thinks about eating raw meat.  I know he is against cooked meat.  But I haven't been able to find out his opinion on the matter.

Hey guys

For breakfast I ate
1/2 an avocado
1 tomato
5 slices of leek
a quarter of a cucumber
12 sugar peas
celtic salt to taste
flax seed oil
4 tablespoons of shredded coconut.
liver (120 grams)

At 10 am:
1/2 an avocado
1 tomato
5 slices of leek
a quarter of a cucumber
12 sugar peas
Real salt to taste

At 2 pm I ate:
about 300 grams of strip loin

For supper I ate:
340g of strip loin
2 egg yolks

I felt sad/pissed off the majority of the day today.
I'm gonna try giving up tomatoes and peppers.  Gotta go shopping for new veggies, although I don't know what the hell I'm going to eat.
What is a more sensible alternative to the flax oil?

One thing that helped me out was going to a French restaurant and ordering steak tartare.
Then I went and got my own grass-feed meat, and I used the ground beef to make little raw hamburgers.
I mixed the meat like I would for regular hamburgers, garlic powder and onionds and stuff, then I topped the patties with sliced tomatoes and pickles and onions and stuff.  It was delicious.

Didn't mono eat today...
My boyfriend didn't really understand what I wanted so he had all my veggies cut up for me for breakfast and lunch already...(he's a mono eater actually)
Breakfast was:
4 tablespoons of flax oil
4 tablespoons of shredded coconut
2 tablespoons of hemp seeds
Celtic salt

For lunch was:

1/2 avocado
1 tomato
1/2 green pepper
1/2 a leek
12 pea pods
4 spears of cucumber
Real salt

Around 130pm I ate:
About 350g of tenderloin, followed by about 8 small tomatoes someone from work grew in their garden.

At supper I ate:

340g of cod fish which I dipped in salted flax seed oil.
1/2 cup of sauerkraut
Celtic salt to taste

Shortly after I drank the water of one coconut

I drank the water of one young coconut

then half an hour late I ate:
1 tomato
1 avocado
12 pea pods
4 spears of cucumber
celtic salt to taste
2 tablespoons coconut
2 tablespoons hemp seeds
a drop of fish oil
two tablespoons flaxseed oil

I am overwhelmed/afraid by the idea of mono-eating.
I leave home for 15 hours a day and I'm afraid I will starve, while having to work physically.
Also when I get hungry, I crave several things at once.  I have trouble enjoying the thing that I am eating, because I am already thinking of the next thing I am going to eat.
However I will try it.
Tomorrow I will bring my foods to work whole,
I will eat breakfast this way too, and if I can handle it, I will try supper like this too.

Threw up after second piece of tenderloin

Seem to be having problems gagging on fat lately

And I salted all my food today, real salt on my first 2 meals, celtic salt on my last

Had 10 full stalks of celery before going to bed.
Woke up in the morning ate
1/2 cup broccoli
4 spears cucumber
1/2 green pepper
1 tomato
2 tablespoons shredded coconut
2 tablespoons avocado oil

At about 930 I ate:
1 tomato
1/2 cup broccoli
4 spears cucumber
1/2 green pepper

I felt crappy like I was a bag of sand,

At around 1 pm I ate
250 grams of tenderloin

Still felt heavy

Ate an apple and a banana to try to shake the feeling and be productive (hope I didn't overdo my carbs for the day)

this had only a very minute positive effect

Started to feel better around 4 pm, when my project partner gave me a kick in the ass via e-mail.

Yes, I guess you can say I'm working my way into it.  I have trouble not "treating" myself on my days off, and since I just cut out fruits, honey and nuts like 3 days ago, I have been having more difficulty.
My first two goals are to recover from adrenal insufficiency and lose weight.  I love the idea of eating raw, and in my opinion I'd say that I eat practically no dairy or grains.
I am still working on improving my network for sources of more variety of organ meats.  I figure it will be about maybe another 6 months before I have my sources lined up all slick, I give up "treating myself" and I give up freezing my food.
I wasn't using sweeteners other than Stevia until I cut out the fruit.  I noticed that I lost 5 pounds in the last 3-4 days.  I didn't want to jeopardize that by using honey as a sweetener, or using fruit as a treat instead.
I REALLY appreciate all advice, and I am taking all suggestions seriously, hence why I just cut down on carbs, and increased my protein intake. I know I have not been doing too good the last two days.

on a side note I have a few little calcium deficiency spots in my recent nail growth, now that I have cut out almonds my calcium intake is really low.  I was watching a video on secrets of longevity and zak suggests making a bone broth, where you slow cook bones for two days than drink it.  Apparently calcium is nor destroyed by heat.  It has the advantage of getting other nutrients out too...One thing I've loved doing since I was bout thirteen is eating chicken bones from KFC and out of those rotisserie chickens.  I would bite of the soft ends, chew them and swallow them then crack the middle parts open, suck all the marrow out.  If the bones were pretty thin and crispy like the rib bones, then I'd just chew them up and eat them whole.  I was craving doing this today

So guys, I have been avoiding eating meats that have not been previously frozen for 14 days.

It would be convenient to just go to the grocery store, pick out a wild salmon or whatever and eat it before freezing, it would probably taste better too.  The couple times that I have eaten beef without freezing it first, I have enjoyed the flavor more.  I'm worried though about catching a parasite.

I have heard about people dying from eating fish without freezing first from an article on how sushi was invented.

I guess it's something I will have to consider.

k, I was stuck in town all morning and afternoon.  Here is what I ate today:

Breakfast:
2 mini cucumbers
1 tomato
1 avocado
1 lemon
2 tablespoons of hemp seeds
2 tablespoons of shredded coconut
celtic salt to taste

Lunch (11 am)
7 sashimi pieces of yellowfin tuna
6 sashimi pieces of tuna belly
1 sashimi pieces of what I think was surf clam (the hard waxy sashimi)

An hour later:
A thing of cut up vegetables from the grocery store which included:
7 cherry tomatoes
7 baby carrots
1 large piece of cauliflower
a handful of broccoli
6 short celery sticks

An other hour later
20 ml of full-fat ranch dressing (prepackaged, refrigerated, but probably not raw)
1/4 cup of sliced mushrooms
1/4 cup of red pepper
1/4 cup of green pepper
a few small pieces of purple onion

Then I got a pack of sugar-free dentyne ice and went through 6 pieces of that today

At about five I drank a caffeinated Tim Horton's coffee with 2 cream and 2 sweeteners ( I limit my coffees to a couple a week)

I've got kelp and dulse flakes in my kitchen.  I use to sprinkle the dulse flakes on everything I ate.  I'll start using them again, if you think it's a good idea.  I will have to experiment with the kelp on how to eat it without cooking it.  One seaweed I really like is arame, but I can't find raw arame anymore.

I'm having 4 raw egg yolks, a handful of cilantro a handful of sliced white mushrooms and celtic salt.

There is a store in Edmonton (5 hours south of here) that sells wild caught game.  I bought a rabbit from them about a month ago.

I'm sure I can get organs, It will probably involve ordering them way in advance.  None of the places I go to stock brain or lungs or anything like that.
I bought kidneys from the place I get my steaks and livers from and they were super nasty.  My cats wouldn't eat them either.  Either they were frozer burned or I'm going to have to try really hard to get used to kidney.
I can probably harass some hunters and get local wild caught meat.
They sell wild fish at the grocery store.  I have some in my freezer.  I used to eat fish every couple days, but since I got into the steaks and the livers, I've lost a lot of interest in the fish.  Especially when I'm working.  I have three days off now, so I think I'm going to indulge in some salmon and cod.
I bought raw shrimps too, and a duck breast.  I eat duck breast about once every couple weeks.  Apparently raw shrimps are really high in taurine.  I wonder if my cats will like them.
