Other (Non-Diet-Related) Paths
« on: June 28, 2008, 03:34:37 pm »
We all here are focused on diet as diet is directly related to health, and health is far more important than wealth or anything else. However, I find it useful, at times, to read up on the self-improvement market, and (very occasionally) find (non-diet-related)books which prove useful to me. So, for example, I found Tony Robbins' ideas relatively useless(He even recommends a raw vegan diet, with cooked fish now added recently).I've found some other gurus like Ted Nicholas or Leil Lowndes useful, too. Anyone got their own recommendations re (non-diet-related) gurus?

Some self improvement books/programs are just absolutely laughable especially 'The Secret' wow that was bad! I wish they worked on me.

Dr. Wayne Dyer.  I saw him on a PBS fund raiser - about four hours long. My mother also gave me copies of his Power of Intention CD set. If I could define those teachings in one word, it'd be "Karma" but there's so much more than "you reap what you sow" or "do unto others." It's the genuine intention that's important.

i 100% agree with Craigs recommendation of Dr. Wayne Dyer, i have 6 of his cds and i still listen to them over and over on my Ipod. he's like a modern day philosopher, but he'd tell you that hes just giving you knowledge thats been around forever. he's spiritual, but very practical as well, and draws on everything from the Bible to Buddhism to Native American Wisdom, everything. i remember on one of his cds, him getting a question from a woman in the audience that asked how she can focus on becoming more spiritual since she has no time cause she just had a baby. Wayne's response was that having and raising a child to live a valueful life is the most spiritual thing that someone can do.

probably the best book ive ever read(actually it was an audiobook so i listened to it) was, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. its probably the only book ive ever "read" that i could literally recommend to someone as "the only book youll ever have to read in your life". seriously, its life-changing. but like myself, i would get the audiobook, just cause it seems that it comes across much better through audio, than it would reading it.

also, anything by Dan Millman is awesome.

also, the movie Rocky.

Anyone got any recommendations re financial gurus? This is the most devious field as there are so many dodgy get-rich-quick schemes out there. Also, can anyone tell me whether it's worth setting up websites/blogs with google adsense? I've heard it's a great way to make a lot of extra money, these days.

Only if you have original content. "Cookie-cutter" sites, sites with generated content from the net, will get you nowhere. Avoid them like the plague. If you want to make money with adsense, make your site original and popular, otherwise it's a no-go.

The U.K. is up there re currency. You probably wouldn't make as much as someone in a third-world country let alone the U.S. People who do well usually have tens or hundreds of sites to maintain.

If it's something you want to do anyway and can make some money at it, give it a try. I wouldn't do it just to make money though.

Bronson,

I'm surprised to hear that you're another whose listened to Dr. Dyer! He does say things that have been around forever but the way he says them makes you feel like it's more reality than fantasy myth, or legend.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Interesting. I did figure that I would need to do something I actually liked. We'll see how it goes.

Hmm, while I think that many gurus, such as those above, have a good message, to some extent, I have to admit I'm more interested in gurus who offer either greater detail re getting ahead in modern life or a more realistic/cynical approach, such as the philosopher Schopenhauer or Macchiavelli. Trouble is, that modern self-help gurus offer mostly only vague advice.
