NEW-B
« on: February 08, 2010, 03:34:45 am »
Hi everyone.

This is my first post and Ive read alot of posts inside the different forums and find this site Very Interesting. I have tried raw meat before out of curiosity mostly and never noticed any side effects. That got me interested and I ended up stumbling upon this site :P. The one thing Im having trouble with is all the conflicting advice and how naturally everyones diet is going to be somewhat different. What Im getting from it is that dairy and grains are a for the most part a no no( I did read somewhere that aujonus does drink raw milk). Also that grassfed and as organic as possible is the best choice( the most untouched or natural). The trouble comes when Im thinking of starting and I read things like you cant eat just meat or you need to have 50%veg-50%meat or some posts say nuts and seeds. To me it seems to make sense that you would somewhat need at least a little bit of fruit or vegetables for extra nutrients, would I be able to get those from a wide variety of meats ie game, lamb and types organs and such or am I conditioned by society to think that you need fruit to be healthy and thats not really the best option? Again Im just starting havent even bought meat to eat yet or anything. Advice would be greatly appreciated thanks! :)

Yes dairy, grains and cooked foods are to be avoided. Raw wild game or raw wildcaught seafood is the best choice but many people are only able to get grassfed/organic meats which is pretty good. In some circumstances if you can find 10)% grassfed meat that is not officially organic that's OK, just make sure the source is of high quality.

As for raw zero-carb or raw omnivore, Newbies are best advised to start with raw omnivore. This is because even people who do well on raw zero-carb have to go through a lengthy transitionary period full of side-effects before they get used to the new regime. With raw omnivore, you just go through a short period of detox(I for example had to visit the bathroom every 30 minutes in the first 2-3 days of switching to rawpalaeo as the toxins from cooked foods left my system). Obviously, if you find out you have some hypersensitivity to carbs, it would then be worth trying raw zero-carb, of course.

Ultimately, you will find, though, that every individual's diet is astonishingly varied and different from each other. I for example go in heavily for raw wild game, while Lex orders 100% grassfed meat-mixes from Slanker's , GoodSamaritan goes in for exotic fruits like durian and goatmeat etc. etc.

awesome thanks! Im determined to go cold turkey when I do this so I wanted to make sure I had some facts straight first. I find it interesting how ther is a detox process, maybe this is why people who have had raw food never do it again cause their body detoxes and they unknowingly think it will go on forever. What kind of side effects should I see? Also what kind of carbs fruits, veggies or both and what kinds typical celery and carrots or exotic ones?

Yes, people suddenly switching to raw might be turned off it because of such initial detoxes - mind you, people who turn to RVAF diets usually do so as a last resort after all other diets have failed them, so they're usually quite patient.

As for side-effects, they will vary greatly from individual to individual. Other than those 2-3 rather awkward 2-3 days of green diarrhea, I had a minor detox occurring once every 2 to 4 months, lasting from 2 to 7 days each, for the first couple of years or so. These detox episodes decreases in terms of severity, duration and frequency until they finally stopped after  c. 2 years. But others may have more serious detoxes or even no detox at all (I've heard that long-term fasting can remove the threat of detox, but I definitely don't recommend it as it can be very, very dangerous indeed).

Sometimes people find they get an allergy to a specific raw food, such as raw dairy or raw veggie-juice, so not all painful symptoms are genuine detoxes. I define a genuine detox as being of usually a minor to moderate nature, with one feeling slightly better after the detox-period than before it; if one just feels steadily worse afterwards than before the detox, then it's no detox but something else.

This is very, very important for all newbies. Remember it well. :)

That's just foolish advice given that rawists have a number of other reasons, not directly related to health, for following a rawpalaeo diet - some may have a rawpalaeodiet-eating spouse or may be primarily interested in weight-loss(raw diets are known to be very effective against obesity and I keep on being asked about raw diets re weight-loss from newbies). Then there are those who are still relatively healthy but who are concerned re aging in the future(again, raw diets do not speed up aging as much as cooked-diets do with their heat-created toxins such as AGEs). I'm quite impressed by what GS and co have done with their children re starting them on rawpalaeo while young as they can then avoid all sorts of potential issues that the vast majority of us get on SAD diets prior to eventually learning about the rawpalaeodiet.

well i think it takes a special type of brain/personality to do this type of diet long-term if you aint sick starting out and you just do it for the reason of believing that it's the healthiest diet out there. I mean most people starting out doing the raw paleo or primal diet dislike eating the foods they eat, at least for me. so constantly eating foods you dont like eating and not anticipiating your next meal is hard on the psyche.

Some people come to this diet absolutely loving the taste of raw animal foods from the get-go. I was a (partial) example. That is, I immediately took to raw seafood and raw plant food. But the point is, encouraging people to start a rawpalaeodiet BEFORE they start developing the usual health-problems gained on SAD diets, makes more sense over time.

if it aint broke then dont fix it. I do believe that some people out there, even on this forum, who do better on cooked whole food diets with certain foods eaten raw. but then there are those who dont ofcourse. I just think people should be given a warning, regardless of whatever new diet your embarking on, that ones health can actually fall rather than rise when doing this. It's just that when some food doesnt suit someone then the person should quickly stop eating it before things get worse and find an alternative, even if it so happens that the alternative right/healthy food for that specific person is cooked or non-paleo. I am not arguing against going raw-paleo but i am arguing for the idea that it cooked food can be healthy and if eating raw paleo doesnt work out for you then quickly stop and try something different and open your mind to any food, not just raw or paleo. I am still experimenting (a journey) for myself which is the right diet/foods for me, still learning and learned that bone marrow doesnt suit me, probably just the dry type, and i think raw beef doesnt too. But i think raw fish/seafood and eggs goes good with me, but i am not quite sure about veggie juice.

This was me. I love raw meat (particularly beef) and don't want to eat other foods. I consider myself really lucky as it suits my lifestyle and my body with no issues.

Exactly.  It's about preventing future problems as much as anything else.

i regret saying that i dont recommend it if your still healthy on cooked food. I say go ahead but eat more fruits and vegetables rather than meats. dont just dive in and eat raw steaks and organs with little fruit or vegetables on the side, that will most likely be harmful. slowly start incorporating raw animal foods if you like, but remember that you dont need as much as some here on the forum say.
