Making soap from suet
« on: February 25, 2010, 04:21:02 pm »

Anyone made soap from suet before, and actually used it?

I had a lot of suet that I was not going to eat I decided to make some soap like the one here: http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/soapmakingoils/ss/rendertallow.htm

The thing is that the end product is not like regular soap at all and it leaves the skin very greasy.

Also do any of you actually eat the resulting white stuff?

Did you add the Lye to it to make soap?
The link you posted to just gets to tallow, it doesn't add lye or mix it...
If you tried to use the tallow as soap there's your problem. :)

If I recall correctly the traditional way they made the lye was putting wood ashes in a barrel with a hole in the bottom. You add water in the top and let it make it's way out the bottom into a catch-basin. You mix this with the tallow somehow.

No I did not add Lye and I think I will not do it because it's not a very safe substance.

I didn't try to use it for soap because I noticed it left the hands greasy when handled.

I don't see any other applications for it right now, but I will not trow it away yet.

I haven't made suet soap, but I've tried tallow soaps and goatmilk soaps and got rashes.  Now I tried grass-fed bison tallow soap, no rash!
