so glad to find this...
« on: August 20, 2008, 08:57:31 am »
hi everyone, im new to this but am very excited to get into it and have found the results to be immediate and encouraging...
im currently probably about 50/50 raw fruit and vegtables / raw animal.
this seems like a great resource and would love any tips for a beginner.
my biggest issue right now is trying to figure out organ meats that i will find more palitable...sadly im finding my gag reflex standing between me and my food at times.
any preperation tips that might help? or organs that might be a bit easier till im better acclimated?
thanks! great to be here.

Welcome Seesawsemiology!

You might find this helpful: http://www.rawpaleoforum.com/general-discussion/sticky-advice-for-newbies-wishing-to-slowly-ease-into-a-raw-animal-food-diet/

I find liver the most palatable and most nutritious of the organ meats. Maybe not at first but your taste will change until you actually grow to like it.

Have a look around and keep us updated on your progress!

Hello!

Lamb heart is very good IMO, and doesn't have much of a "gross factor" to it like some other organs.
The only thing is the fat on the heart gets stuck to the roof of your mouth like crazy!

When I first started, I'd cut it up into swallowable pieces and bolt them down with water - not unlike taking a pill.

Yeah, do what Craig said, but cut the stuff up into tiny slivers before bolting it down, so that you barely notice it.

Re liver:- Actually, most people find it the most difficult organ to get used to. Certainly, I had to try liver 2nd-last of the major organs. I found tongue and heart the easiest  to get used to.

Tongue is easy (and the most tasty) just make sure you wash that slimy gel stuff off it makes your spit go foamy!
Heart is pretty easy and I bolt liver because there's so much flavour.
I prefer just muscle meat and suet mainly but I eat a fair amount of liver because I enjoy the feeling of energy and spark it gives me.

I did what Geoff told me to sear the raw meat / organs first, then a little less each time.
Eventually I got tired of the whole searing thing and it made better sense and better taste to eat it raw.

Tongue and heart aren't organs guys!

They're considered to be organs, even if they're muscles as well.

Considered by who? I can see the heart being considered an organ although I don't agree with it (because it's nutritional value seems to be halfway between muscle and organ tissue) but I can't see tongue being considered an organ. It's totally a muscle. Organs by definition are "A group of tissues that perform a specific function or group of functions." - from http://www.biology-online.org/dictionary/Organ

Also from that site "Examples of animal organs are heart, lungs, brain, eye, stomach, spleen, bones, pancreas, kidneys, liver, intestines, skin, urinary bladder and sex organs."

So according to that site the heart is an organ but not the tongue, which I agree with.

I'm afraid wikipedia disagrees with you, among other sources(tongue is an organ-meat(it's always treated as such by farmers, anyway):-

Oow, good debate.  The tongue is definitely made up of skeletal muscle mainly, however, it is loaded with collagen too, and is different nutritionally from skeletal muscle meat from an animal's limbs, for instance.  From a strictly biological sense, the tongue is a sensory organ, hands down (just like the eyes), and serves a very unique function quite apart from that of other skeletal muscle tissues.

I think the muscle movement function of the tongue is more important than the sensory organ part. That is to say you would have a better chance surviving with a tasteless tongue rather than a paralyzed one. Wikipedia says a lot of things.

Definitely an organ. Googling under "marrow organ" or "marrow organ-meat" should provide results.

Marrow is an organ because it produces blood cells.
