This post is directed to Goodsamaritan specifically but anyone with knowledge of Linux is more than welcome to respond.

I noticed you work with Linux for your profession.

I have a laptop that I installed Linux Ubuntu onto and made an error that unmounted the hard drive (I think) and now I must boot from a CD every time I desire to use my laptop.

Would you be able to assist me by chance? If not, I will understand!

Ubuntu is great, except when it doesn't work. I have been using Linux since October. I don't miss Windows at all.

I used Windows at work but Apple @ home. Can't say I miss Windoze.

I will try Linux @ some point. My buds are geeks and use Linux. I am curious, but don't have an unused computer to experiment. I suppose I could try a partition for Linux.

Why did you switch?

I switched because all my life I had been using Windows and had never had any option. Although it may seem presumptuous to assume that options should be available to choose what operating system I want to use in the first place, but when you consider the monopoly of Mac and Windows, its understandable to feel uncomfortable with the status quo.

Because when you think about it--really only those two exist? They aren't even that good! Linux is open-sourced and exciting to support.

I was using Linux way back in 1998 as a successor to our Novell server.
Windows NT sucked as a server so I chose Linux.

I was always using both Linux and Windows desktops.

Of course when Linux matured for the desktop, I stopped using Windows except for simulating customer needs of windows under a virtual machine.

I may partition my Mac and put Linux on it for fun and frustration

(learning a new system). I cleaned up my HD and now have about 140 GB space. I partitioned and put Windoze on it but have had troubles, so I don't use it.

Linux is very user-friendly nowadays, it should be an easy thing to get used to.
Funny thing is I (as a Linux user) find Mac to be a very frustrating experience

I've had to fix my girlfriends Mac a few times.. such a pain in the ass, even though the two systems are fairly similar under the hood as they come from a common predecessor (Unix).

Thanks for the thoughts. Which version would you suggest?

Any system tends to be a bit of a PITA to learn unless you have a friend who is familiar with it. I am interested in the challenge.

It's actually funny to hear Windoze users transitioning as they can't understand that Macs don't require you to do so much grunt work.

Ubuntu, with each version it actually looks more and more like Mac so I'm pretty sure it would be easiest for you.
I myself use Debian (Ubuntu is getting way too pretty for me

), but I think it's not the best distribution for a beginner.

Go download Ubuntu. Its easy. I put it on my grandfathers computer because he kept getting 'XP SECURITY CENTRE' virus's and now he loves it becuase he can just click around and cant mess anything up.

My UK processor is 4GHZ AMZ. I have been looking at gaming PCs costing 4,500 pounds plus which are even better. I am hoping that Moore's law still applies, but am worried that the only suitable high quality PCs will only ever be parallel processors.

That's 64bit but the 32bit Ubuntu will work fine as well (unless you have more than 4GB RAM).

What's AMZ? Why would you need so much performance (4,500 pounds plus)?

Athlon computers are AMZ. And the higher the performance, the less I have to wait re slowdowns during PC games.
