General Discussion / Re: Staying RAW in Winter?
« on: August 12, 2012, 08:41:40 am »
Very interesting on the cold thermogenesis stuff.  I always wonder like, how can thin-furred critters like birds, squirrels, rabits, etc stay warm in the winter?  Obviously they have a fur coat but if I had their "coat" it would not keep me warm.  I do instinctively think that humans have evolved to handle a lot more temperature extremes than we currently do.  more of a health thing.  I will try the cold showers thing because I love the idea of sucking in cool fresh air.  I actually enjoy just breathing air especially in the very early spring and fall/early winter.  I feel as I get healthier I will be living off of the elements more and less off of food so it's good to keep learning about it all =)  I also liked the idea of rolling the meat in a little oil on a skillet.

@ Ioanna, makes sense so you eat your meats at room temp?  Honestly think part of my problem is congested liver/GB so the good fats are not digesting great all the time

Welcome man,

Yea I think you will find that while some of us have slightly different opinions, there hardly ever seems to be any negativity anywhere.  We all are just trying to be healthy and find the best things that work for us.  Don't rush into it but let your body lead you what it wants you to eat.

Yea, This all sounds good.  I just haven't fully delved into the large amounts of raw animal foods thing yet.  My body is liking the transition.  I think one thing I keep overlooking is eating foods more room temperature.  I mean if we get back to "nature" as Inger states, animals that eat animals eat them warm usually.  No warm-blooded animal is refrigerator temperature when they eat it.  So yea, I think lots of salmon, bone marrow, raw butter, eggs, and fattier meats sounds like the way to go.  @Inger, can you sum up cold thermogenesis for me real quick?  I do hot/cold showers sometimes but my adrenals are not the best so I need to be careful with all of that to not get chilled.

« on: August 11, 2012, 07:31:05 pm »
Hey guys,

Raw seems a lot easier to me during the summer.  Lots of fruits, fresh veggies, plant fats, etc.  As fall and winter are rolling in I can see me wanting more and more cooked foods, etc.  For those staying fairly high-raw, what are some things you do to stay warm in the winter?  Especially concerning food.

It is very funny to me as well.  The more I evolve into healthier and healthier eating, I swear everything I used to eat and that I see others eat just seems comical to me, like a BIG JOKE.  It's like a cartoon world.  Pizza sticks, donuts, starbucks, etc.  Eating simply, mono meals, less seasonings, etc means faster eating, less cleanup, etc.  We are definitely not omnivores meant to munch on grass all day.  Whoever or whatever created us meant us to be able to eat as fuel and then move on to enjoying/working on life.

Don't push into it too quickly.  I think one mistake when going paleo is trying to be as strict as everyone on here.  You have to remember that most here are very disciplined and dedicated to eating extremely well.  I would say mistake #2 would be cutting down on carbs too quickly.  Some people just need more.  If you are cutting out grains don't be afraid to rely on root vegetables like sweet potatoes, turnips, rutabagas, parsnips, carrots, beets, peas, potatoes, etc.  Eat enough fruit as well if it sits well with you.  I agree that following your own body is the best guide.  Don't get locked into the whole 30% protein, 30% fat, blah blah.  It depends who you are, what you do, and where you live.  SMILE ;D

Just be careful to listen to your body always man.  The seasons change.  We change.  You get older, you switch jobs, you switch locations.  Don't fall for the trap of getting locked into a "diet" and thinking you have "found" it.  Some days I eat as a vegan, some days I eat a lot more meat and eggs and butter.  Summer has been hot here.  I have ate a lot more fruits and plant fats (avocados, coconut/olives oils, etc) with smaller amounts of animal foods.  In the winter that will probably flop.  More bone marrow and fatty meats.  There is a reason there is so much disagreement about "diet" in the world.  We are all different, we all change, and we all just need to be taught to eat real food, listen to our bodies, and acclimate appropriately.

General Discussion / Re: Should I stop eating raw while traveling?
« on: August 01, 2012, 06:56:28 pm »
Wow, big decision.  Very cool, seems like you are looking from all angles.

Most hotels will supply mini-fridges if you request them.  How do you do with plant fats?  These would seem to be a lot more accessible on the road.  I have been looking into road-tripping lately so I have been thinking about all this too.  Things like avocados, raw eggs, raw nut butter, cold-pressed coconut/olive oil, sardine tins, all have pretty decent shelf-life.  I mean ultimately you really need the fridge.  Also consider bringing along a juicer or a
"nutribullet" with you on your trips.  I mean, is it like you go away then come home and repeat?  Or away for extended periods?

I think if it's for extended periods it would be worth taking a day or 2 and finding all the good quality organic grocery stores/farmers in your area.  Most of these have web-sites or contact info.  Check eatwild.com  These have a good listing for local farmers.  I think it can be done, it just is all about prior preparation.

Agreed,

I think all of this stuff is about to gain huge attention.  Cooked paleo is all over health magazines and the internet now.  All it takes is a few celebrities to start popping raw eggs, sashimi, or a little raw liver in their "workout shake" and the population jumps over "the line."  I think people are generally good, but most people live in FEAR.  They can't bring themselves to consciously do something if the leaders (politicians, celebrities, doctors, CEO's, etc) tell them that it is ok.  I think probably 95% of the world is always waiting for that other 5% to really make the changes in this world.  That is why we need to be the 5% that makes GOOD changes happen.  ;D

Do you get enough sea salt in your diet?  Weak adrenals love salt.  Other than that, good fats, carbs, and proteins should do the trick.

Right, but assuming the nutrition is there, cooked broth is less of a strain on digestion than just cooked veggies I would think.

General Discussion / Broth Nutrition?
« on: July 31, 2012, 12:08:03 am »
Ever evolving with the diet.  I don't plan on dropping out root veggies or steamed veggies anytime soon but after a lot of crock-potting, I have a question.

-Do we think cooking vegetables in a crock-pot or other low and slow method for a few hours and then drinking the broth and throwing out the vegetables provides the calories, sugar, minerals, and nutrition from those vegetables in an easier to digest format?

I feel like this is probably true.  When I use things like carrots, parsnips, etc my broth always tastes very sweet.  I personally think some fiber is good for me, but I currently eat a lot of fruit right now so I don't think the vegetable fiber is that important.  What you guys think?

Health / Re: Joints problems and plantar fascia on cooked paleo diet
« on: July 30, 2012, 06:33:22 pm »
Yea I agree,

Probably too much acidic build-up from all the heavy cooked meats and fats.  Alkalize your system more.  Careful with the raw veggies though (unless juiced, blended).  The fiber may not be the best thing in large quantities.  Lot's of water, green juices, fresh air.  Raw eggs and avocados are some of my favorite foods/snacks.  One thing you will learn with the primarily raw diet is that there is almost no clean up most of the time =)

No, fasting would not be required.  Fasting is tricky.  I mean, you really need to have the nutrition/health to be doing it.  If not, the body gets stressed too much and it's counterproductive.  Building up the adrenals are a big key here.  I tend to just do a daily green juice with maybe celery, beets, beet greens, or carrots, spinach, whatever.  Dandelion is good here, but yea I would check about all this I have no idea about breast-feeding children  ;D  I think the most important thing is to listen to your body and eat lots of good quality, preferably raw fats.  The root veggies will probably help you a lot too.

-From a more mental/emotional perspective; Make sure you are relaxed when you eat.  Bless your food, don't watch the news, maybe listen to some nice music, whatever relaxes you.  You have to be out of "fight/flight" mode to digest well.

General Discussion / Re: Butter???
« on: July 29, 2012, 11:39:18 pm »
I find my body likes raw butter a lot.  Very nourishing for the adrenals, nervous system, etc.    People in India have been using it for thousands of years as a healing food.  It's all about what sits for you.  I know it is hard, but you just have to trust your own body and intuition.  One thing I have learned is that there will always be people FOR and AGAINST just about every food out there.  If we focus on the negative, we never accomplish things.  But for sure steer clear of anything pasteurized.  In my opinion, you need high amounts of saturated fat and starchy veggies in your diet but that is just my thoughts.  Seriously, just sit down with a big bowl of sweet potatoes, broccoli, smothered in butter; bless it, eat it; and tell me how you feel afterwards.  I can almost promise you will be glowing.

One thing I have realized over time is that it is not so much how many calories you eat but what are you ABSORBING?  If the liver is clogged = no bile = no fat (especially cooked fats) digestion.

Yes, there are gentle ways of cleansing the liver.  I would put the order something like this:

-MILD: lots of juicing, greens, carrots, beets, apples, etc.  High raw juices, easy on the fiber.  Also raw egg yolk and liver would be here too.  Liver is more of a healing/cleanser for the liver.

-MODERATE: Dandelion greens in juices, peppermint oil (thank-you dorothy), milk thistle, other herbs that stimulate bile flow.  Coffee enemas would be a great help too

-INTENSE: things like Liver flushing, fasting, etc.  I really wouldn't recommend this type of stuff unless you are having serious problems, especially with kids and breastfeeding.

Meal ideas:  stick with easily digestible mono-type meals.  High-calorie options include raw eggs, avocados, olives, coconut/olive oil, steamed potatoes, peas etc.  Don't be afraid of the starchy tubers.  Just mix them with other veggies to slow down the absorption.  A winner around here is steamed sweet potatoes with brocolli with large amounts of coconut oil, raw butter, or olive oil.  You can easily get 600-800 calories in a meal doing this.  It's a long dual-sided process.  Ultimately, you need to improve digestion/liver function/absorption and at the same time give your body stuff it can easily process. Hope this helps.  ;D

As a mild "treatment/preventative" you could add things like raw garlic, coconut oil, fresh cinnamon, oregano, etc to the diet.  These all discourage parasites without pushing you too hard.  That is crazy with the breast milk, I can't imagine having to do this stuff and worry about that too  ;D

I agree enzymes can be helpful very short term.  They should only really be needed if your eating cooked fats anyway.  If your liver/GB is "stuck-up" you should really be doing some form of liver-cleansing to unstick it.  I had this same problem.  The more I clean up my liver, the more fat i crave and the more weight I seem to gain back.

Farmers markets are bar-none the best place to get organic, local foods.  They should have the closest thing to wild fruit besides growing/foraging your own.  I think raw vegan have improved their health by eating a cleansing diet.  It has a lot of vitamins/minerals, easy to digest (minus the fiber), etc.  It is just lacking/deficient in a lot of stuff we need also.  Some need more than others it appears and it depends on climate, activity levels, etc.  My diet isn't really that far off.  I mean I would say I eat maybe 75% vegan/vegetarian with around 25% coming from stuff like raw eggs, sashimi salmon, bone marrow, liver, crockpot chicken, etc.  Most of what I eat is fruits and vegetables and I feel better every day.

I would say that some of us cook veggies and tubers, etc.  Sometimes lightly cooking meats.  To me, it's more about listening to the body.  Eventually, the body will evolve towards purer and purer foods.  Welcome, man.  So you a chef then?

I would consider dropping the "all-raw" thing.  You have to remember that if I eat a pound of raw carrots (Fiber included) there might be 10 units of "living" energy in those carrots.  BUT it doesn't do me any good if it takes me 20 UNITS just to process and eliminate the fiber lol.  So i don't eat raw carrots.  "Man does not live on bread alone."  I would start looking at early life traumas, why you are fearful of life.  Other things that could help are:

-sunlight
-deep breathing fresh air
-EFT
-grounding
-moderate exercise

It just seems you are very centered on this raw-vegan type thing.  You may look into chinese medicine or something like that.  Some people simply don't do well on all raw diets.  If you are really concerned with the cooked food, just add some sauerkraut or fermented veggies with it to help digest.  If you are fearful of your food, your body will not want to assimilate it.  One thing that helped me a lot was to sit down and bless my food every time I ate it.  Take a minute to calm down the fear and "get to know" your food.  I know, somewhat silly but it is very real.  9 times out of 10 this worked for me.  A plate of raw veggies may look good to some "guru" but your body may be saying what the hell are you doing =) Give me some chicken soup.

How much of this do you think is emotional (no disrespect)?

It sounds to me like you are stressing out too much about the diet.  Jump on a weston price style diet for nourishment.  There are easy foods that most people have no problems with.  I don't personally need that much meat at the moment.  Some high calorie foods:

-avocados
-raw eggs
-bone marrow
-potatoes/sweet potatoes with good amounts of coconut oil/olive oil, etc
-crock pot meals

I would seriously cut out the fiber, it sounds like your digestion is screwy.  Think soft, mushy, easily digestible.  Is your temp going up yet?  Use your bodies judgement.  It knows what it needs right now.  You just need to drop your mind out of the equation.  If a juicy meatloaf and potatoes sounds amazing, eat it.  You can worry about the details later.  Also, look into 3rd chakra/perfection/self-criticism issues as these are critical in digestion.  That's all i got.

They are natures "decomposers."  They feed off dead, toxic material.  Rotting stuff, etc.  The more toxic and unhealthy we are the easier it is for them to leach on.  They are just a different form of life, IE: parasites.  They don't want to kill their host, but rather live off of them.
