General Discussion / Diet coke and cooked beef burgers are the cure
« on: August 27, 2013, 04:03:31 pm »
I had a conversation between myself and someone, where I was persuaded into eating cooked beef burgers and diet coke, with lots of garlic. I do feel a fool, I guess it shows how desperate I am to try things that might help me. I worry about my sanity a little now :P

A very bizarre point is that I actually feel the best I've felt for ages. All my symptoms are very low. Any idea why? Placebo? Caffeine? Coincidence, as they do go up and down anyway? Garlic?

General Discussion / I'm lost on the raw paleo path
« on: August 24, 2013, 10:41:51 pm »
Okay here is a little rant or description of some issues I'm going through, some doubts and confusion about my diet and lifestyle and what kinds of choices I am making. It's a bit crazy and intense but it's where I am right now, and some feedback from this community would be great, because I value some of the opinions here. Here goes..

List of problems:
- Fatigue and tiredness
- Poor libido and some erection problems
- Urological problem: discomfort and burning in pelvic floor area. Over frequent need to urinate. - - - Can be slightly uncomfortable when urinating. Slow flow when urinating.
- Find it hard to empty bowels sometimes, and some discomfort in bowels.
- Depression and tension
- Diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia / Myelodysplastic Syndrome which means: Blood cell counts (White, platelets, neutrophils, red blood cells) are low.

But they have been improving over last 2 years or so when I have been eating raw 'palaeo' with raw cheese and milk too diet. Though my cell counts are not perfect they are pretty good, and doctor I spoke to recently doesn't seem to think they account for some of the tiredness I feel.

Attemped solutions: meditating as much as I can. Doing my best to relax, and exercising without overdoing it too much. Trying to do more yoga/stretching too.

Diet wise I really don't have a clue. Ginger, Chilli, Dairy, and drinking more than a small amount of fluids in the day seem to make urological problem worse. But then sometimes I doubt if these foods are the culprits when I get symptoms when I've been 'good.'

I have cut out all dairy, but I don't see how I can eat enough calories. I have a fast metabolism and am naturally skinny. I put on weight but now I'm losing it. I lost nearly 10kg, and I've come to a point where I'm almost scared to eat anything because I'm worried it's going to make any of my symptoms worse. I find it hard to eat enough calories and feel weak sometimes when I'm not eating enough. I don't see how to eat enough calories on this diet without dairy etc.

I think I might be eating too much protein, too.

I am half considering giving raw palaeo diet up after so long at this point. It is all so confused. I am sort of trying zero carb atm, even a teaspoon of honey at the moment seems to make my throat feel a bit sore as i eat it, what's with that? Lots of raw fish, some oysters, raw beef.

I feel like it's a mental illness, being this obsessed by food. the way it restricts me, and occupies so much of my thoughts and energy. I feel like maybe fuck it, I should just relax about it and eat whatever.

This probably seems a little crazy, and that's probably because it is. So you are aware I am getting professional medical help for these issues too, but I wanted some opinion from some raw paleo people too.

Thanks :)

Health / Lack of libido
« on: March 22, 2013, 06:14:42 pm »
Hi, I wanted to discuss a very frustrating and embarrassing problem I have been having. I have a real lack of libido and problems with getting / maintaining an erection. I have also noticed a decrease or lack of night time erections too.

I have a health problem 'aplastic anaemia' which can make me tired at times, and perhaps I have been stressed recently too. I am trying to rest as much as possible and do my best to be relaxed in general, and not worry about the problem too much which can only make it worse.

I wonder if anyone has any advice, any things I should do or certain foods I should go for / avoid.

Thanks,
Isthmus

Hot Topics / Shellfish =[
« on: April 23, 2012, 03:18:38 am »
Alright, so I ate mussels on two occasions about 8 months ago, after the second time I  spend the next couple of days with high temp and sicking my guts up. I have eaten oysters twice recently, the second lot I ate just the other day and I got food poisoning (I guess) again. So I have about a 50% rate of getting food poisoning so far with eating raw shellfish...

Supposedly plenty of others here experience no problem with raw shellfish? I don't get it! I really don't think I'm going to touch them again, at least for a long time, based on my personal experiences with them.

General Discussion / Salmon in the UK
« on: April 14, 2012, 07:04:17 pm »
Hey,

I have some questions re salmon (as a UK resident). I am living in the South East, and I find it difficult to find wild salmon. The only salmon seems to be farmed / from Scottish Lochs. The only time I can get wild salmon is when I go to a big Sainsbury's, where they sell packaged wild Alaskan salmon fillets which are great. This isn't much of a solution as it's not very near me and I don't get there often.

I wanted to know if Loch salmon is relatively bad, it is farmed right? And also if any other UK residents can get hold of wild salmon, and if they can then where / how?

Thanks a lot!

General Discussion / Carbs and Spots (Acne)
« on: March 23, 2012, 06:09:09 am »
I have been slowly working out that certain foods give me spotty skin. My skin is pretty good really but when I abstain from certain things it really clears up and looks it's best.

Seems that raw honey causes me to go spotty, and more recently I have noticed that fruit causes it too. Apples and Kiwis definitely make it worse. Haven't really done any experiments with other fruit. I have a feeling Banans might not be as bad, but I'm far from certain and feel they possibly still cause my skin to get worse.

I really seem best when I'm eating close to zero carb as possible. Just meat, animal fats, eggs and some coconut oil. I'm going to experiment with (raw goat) milk which I have drank a lot in the past. I have a feeling that milk doesn't actually cause much of an issue for my skin, despite the fact I've heard that it can for others, but I'll do some experiments and see.

I wanted to post it to see if anyone has any similar experiences and see what you people think, and if you have any advice.

General Discussion / Carb Sources

So to those of you who are eating carbs: are there some good sources of raw paleo carbohydrates other than fruit? What are your main sources of carbs?

General Discussion / Diet and Social Interactions
« on: February 08, 2012, 08:41:30 pm »
I've been eating essentially completely raw now for around four months or more.

I am generally a socially confident person but I realise that I am still not completely confident with being open with my diet to people. I am trying to understand why this is, wondering if perhaps it's because I'm still not confident on some level that it's the right path etc.

I might be helpful to hear other people share their experiences regarding their diet and 'society,' if anyone is willing.

To give an example that came up today at the fish counter: the guy asked me what I was going to do with the large quantity of coley fillet I had purchased. I told him I didn't know, that I'd bake it or something, rather than being honest and saying  I was going to eat it raw. I guess in situations like that it's because I fear someone is going to be like 'what the heck' and give me a hard time, so it's just easier to lie. Yet still I walked away thinking to myself why wasn't I just upfront?

General Discussion / Uni Film Project: Palaeo Diet Direction?
« on: November 04, 2011, 04:41:30 am »
Hey all,

I am reading anthropology at university, and have been set the task of creating a short film to be completed before xmas: a group project along with two other students. So obviously any direction that I might want to take the film in has to be passed by them as well. Essentially it's going to be a short piece (in the order of minutes), and pretty limited in it's scope considering the time frame.

I have a list of topics, all of which are all very broad, on which to base the film. There are two, one in particular, that just scream make a film about food and specifically Palaeo diet. One title is “Stone Age Diet,” the other is “We are what we eat.”

I am posting really just to see if I might gather up any flashes of inspiration or great ideas any of you might have. Obviously either title is incredibly broad, so the film needs to be given some kind of direction. I have two initial outlines on how to approach it so far:

One would be along the lines of a short interview about my diet, and some sort of 'demonstration.' Something toward the sensationalist side of things might make good film, like eating raw beef heart – nice and big and bloody. Then perhaps filming peoples reactions and responses, and through that, explore the taboo nature of eating raw meat in our culture in some way.

If that works out too one sided, i.e. based around 'me' and my diet for my fellow group members to take (although the intention in the first idea is not to make a film about me, but use that as a platform for exploring some aspect of the diet itself) then an alternative could be to explore the theme of 'we are what you eat.' We could potentially document in some way the diet of each of us, and look into whether we agree (or not) that we are what we eat.

These are some initial thoughts. I would greatly appreciate input of any kind any of you might like to contribute!

General Discussion / Keeping Meat and Fat in the Fridge for Week(s)
« on: October 10, 2011, 03:00:13 am »
I want to buy a large cut of meat to keep me going for like a week, maybe longer - cutting off what I want as I go.

I wanted tips or advice anyone might have in doing this. Do you have some suggestions of what cut of beef would be a good one? And does anyone have any experience of how long and how well it would keep in a fridge?

Also a source of fat to keep me going too. What about a large slab of suit? What is suet like, is it a good source of fat? Or what other rich sources of fat are there in beef?

Thanks for your help. Just as I have really got stuck into RP I am living away from my source of meat, and if I could buy in quantity and keep it going for a week or longer the better - that would be awesome.

Peace,

General Discussion / Hard Fat on Beef Heart
« on: October 04, 2011, 05:23:47 pm »
Hey I have a quick question,

I get beef hearts some times. The heart has some really hard fat; that's what I guess the tough white stuff is. Is it good to eat? Is there anyone else here who gets beef heart and knows what I'm talking about, who can advise me?

General Discussion / Local Water Source
« on: August 23, 2011, 02:49:38 am »
I currently reside in Hastings, East Sussex, UK. I want a clean source of natural water near by, but don't know how to go about finding one. What sorts of water sources are safe for drinking, and how do I go about locating one near to me. Google searching didn't turn up anything helpful for me, searching along the lines of "springs in East Sussex" etc.

Any advice or general discussion on this topic would be helpful.

Off Topic / Barefoot walking technique
« on: July 19, 2011, 04:14:50 pm »
I have recently begun to get interested in and experiment with the barefoot running technique, i.e. landing on the forefoot.

I had a question for barefoot walking, do you walk in a different way too? Do you barefooters here walk in a similar manner to the running technique?

Thanks for your help,

General Discussion / Fermented Cod Liver Oil - Method?
« on: June 10, 2011, 03:43:08 am »
Hey all,

I would love to find out a step by step method for fermenting cod liver oil; and presumably it can be done with other fish livers too. A sacred food from many ancient nordic and arctic cultures, like many fermented foods it is surely full of powerful health giving properties.

I would have no clue where to begin!

Do any of you know the ways of fermented cod liver oil?

Peace

General Discussion / Grassfed, what's that?
« on: March 14, 2011, 10:34:11 pm »
Hey,

I've been working diligently to find a source of top quality grass fed beef. Some here have told me it's easy! I broadened my search to the whole country, and it seems to me there are only one or two that do not supplement their cows at least a little, in the winter for example.

E.g. From a raw dairy supplier in South East UK:

"The farm is an all grass farm, most of which is permanent pasture on the land on the Pevensey Levels. On the upper western side of the farm, grass leys that are rich in red and white clover are grown. The cows graze all these fields once the ground is dry enough 'to turn them out' in the spring, until the ground becomes too wet in the autumn. The cows are then housed indoors for the winter. They are fed grass silage in the winter that has been made from lush spring grass and clover. An organic pea bean and wheat mix is also fed to the cows to supplement their grass diet."

I've been phoning places, googling and asking around at the butchers near me, and I'm not getting very far. I get some pretty weird responses some of the time. One place I called turned out to be a distributor/abattoir not what I thought, they were really pretty hostile. One guy in a butchers was a bit slow, and didn't have a clue what I'd just asked him and started talking about the amount of fat on the meat. Another guy said something along the lines of "Well, yeah, I guess. I've seen the cows on the fields..." That didn't inspire me too much.

General Discussion / Whole Sea Bass - Where to start?
« on: March 12, 2011, 01:55:11 am »
Hey guys,

I got a whole sea bass here. Where do I start? What bits are good to eat? Stomach and intestines I should discard. Are the organs good to eat?

I am a major rookie here! All the help you can offer on where to go with a whole fish will be super appreciated.

Peace,
Sam

Edit: It being a relatively small fish would you bother with any of the innards or not?

Edit Edit: What about bones? :D

General Discussion / Questions on Seafood
« on: March 10, 2011, 04:21:12 am »
Hey,

I have quite a few questions about seafood. When I am down by the coast I will try and get some really fresh fish from the local fishermen if I can. Being in the middle of the country (UK) getting really fresh fish isn't an option. Any raw fish meat is okay to eat raw? Being new to raw meat I have the same concerns about health. Pretty much any fish meat I can pick up will be okay?

What about heavy metals in fish. My understanding is that our seas have become pretty polluted, and it raises health issues about fish, especially the larger ones that eat other fish. What is your take on this issue?

I would also like to know if there's anything particular to look out for. Organic? Some fish is farmed. Fish wild caught? What kind of questions do I need to be asking the seller when I'm looking to purchase fish for raw consumptions?

It feels like there is such a VAST amount to learn as a newbie RAF person; I will really appreciate any patience and advice you can spare me.

Peace,
Sam

General Discussion / Trying to Source Grassfed
« on: March 08, 2011, 06:48:41 pm »
Hey guys,

I spend some of my time in Hastings, East Sussex, where I know a good few places I should be able to get some good quality meat.

The rest of my time I am in Oxford (actually just outside), which is where I am now. I checked with what I considered would be my best bet, a butcher's selling mostly organic meat. They told me the cows are grassfed in the summer, but in the winter, i.e. now, they are fed on grains.

What do you think of this? Give me some advice please.

Thanks,
Sam

Welcoming Committee / Hey - Questions on Raw Meat (Surprise!)
« on: March 08, 2011, 12:55:48 am »
Hey all,

I have been (attempting) to research eating raw meat for some time now, but I am finding it difficult to find information to satisfy me.

I have a lifetime of social conditioning to overcome here, I really can't get my head around what raw meat is safe to eat.

For example if I go to the butchers there there may be some rump steak sitting behind the glass display. If I ask for a cut of meat it'll be taken to a chopping board (that's surely had lots of different meats cut on it) and and cut for me. Is this kind of meat safe to eat raw? Does it need special handling to make sure it's okay to eat?

I am glad I found your forum, there seems to be a lot of inspiring and interesting people here. I hope some of you can help (re-?) educate me!

Thanks,
Sam
