Hot Topics / Re: Hangover treatment recommendations?
« on: June 23, 2010, 07:51:39 pm »
I know there's no real "cure" for a hangover. You're body is basically recuperating from toxins...but...does anybody have any hangover treatment ideas for during and/or the morning after some drinking...from a Raw Paleo perspective?

I've read it's good to drink a big glass of water between each drink which I did.

drink water between drinks ?  sounds absurd.

i start drinking water once i get home from the party.  i drink even more water when i wake up the next day.

that's the only thing i do really.  but i think Vitamins might be a good idea too.

how about just always have a bottle of water within an arm's reach and simply drink when thirsty ?  your body will know when it needs water - just make sure its always available.

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Re: Martial Arts? Which one is practical?
« on: June 22, 2010, 01:07:18 pm »
Ok Ive been doing Brazilian jiu jitsu for 6 months and it is very fun and I have no doubt it is at least one of the best martial arts for fighting larger opponents. But Im beginning to think it is not that practical for self defense out in the street. I feel that a striking art would be because you could take on more opponents than 1. What do you guys think is the best practical martial art for self defense? Ive seen pekiti tirsia and krav maga and they look good but is anything better? ???

i would start by running.  running, not jogging.  that means a program based on sprints.  for example you sprint about 2 - 3 blocks, then walk to catch your breath then sprint again etc.  i have to say though that training this way has caused one of my worst injuries that never healed - a torn hamstring, so be sure to start out by sprinting at MUCH less than full intensity.

Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Nuts vs Seeds ?
« on: June 21, 2010, 07:41:14 pm »
I find that on the average nuts taste better to me than seeds, except Hemp Seeds which i love.

But anyway, which is healthier ?  Can a generalization be made ?

at Whole Foods Hemp Seeds are $12 / pound.  most nuts at whole foods are $10 / pound which is almost as much.  if Hemp Seeds really are that much healthier it would appear that i should be mega-dosing them ?  Or is there such a thing as too much Omega-3 ?

this reminds me of vegan parents whose child died from malnutrition.  they didn't breast feed him because milk is an animal product.

i wish i was kidding.  but people ARE this dumb.

a word of advice - don't experiment on your baby until he/she reaches puberty.  during the first ~15 years of life or so the most important thing is not to be deficient in anything.  it's when you are an adult when u need to worry about eliminating all of the things from the diet that don't belong in there.

keep in mind science is usually wrong.  the best way to be safe is to use variety ...

General Discussion / Re: Raw Gourmet for me
« on: June 21, 2010, 07:16:21 pm »
Not my experience. I had to avoid raw eggs during my raw zero-carb phases. Raw eggs do provide a lot of instant energy, which is why AV recommends them, but, in the long-term, they can cause various side-effects, no doubt due to the avidin in them.

if i had no problems with cooked eggs in my previous life time does that mean i will have no problems with raw ones ?

My "gourmet concoction" is in smoothie form: Eggs, bananas & cacao powder in a blender.

Maybe not the best food combining but the taste and energy is unbelievable! Best "chocolate shake" I've ever had. I've been doing well on it for over 10 years.

my chocolate shake looks like this:

about 16 oz water.
two scoops syntrax nectar chocolate whey protein.
3 - 4 tea spoons hemp seeds.
1 - 2 tea spoons chia seeds.
a handful of nuts.

most nuts seem to work well except almonds which don't blend very well, and i haven't tried brazilian nuts.

with seeds you have to be careful - some of them have pretty annoying taste when blended.  i stopped using flax seeds because of this.  also some seeds ( like chia ) have a lot of fiber so if you use too much the shake turns into some sort of a gel that is impossible to drink, so you need to be conservative with that.  that's why i love hemp seeds - they have neither of these two seed side effects - you can put as much of them in your shake as you want.

i stopped using bananas in my shakes in an effort to reduce sugar and carb intake.  besides it tastes better without them.

i should try adding an egg to the mix :)

General Discussion / Re: organic raw eggs
« on: June 21, 2010, 07:01:42 pm »
I only eat the yolks. Adding squeezed citrus makes them decent. Adding honey makes it taste pretty good. I also like warm (leave them out at room temperature) yolks better than cold.

but is honey paleo ?  i know people always used honey but IN WHAT QUANTITIES ?

regardless to me honey is just a souped up sugar.  i don't eat sugar so i can't eat honey either.

if only i could use sugar i remember when i was a kid i used to blend raw egg yolks with sugar - it was AWESOME.

hm ... what about mayo ?  ( home made )

ok wait a minute.  i been eating ( cooked ) eggs a lot in the past, up to about 10 per day.  i never noticed any adverse side effects and it was always absolutely one of my favorite things to eat.  so what is wrong with eating raw ones ?  why should i experience problems ?

also how should i eat them raw - any tips on making them more palatable ?

I could only wish more people would stop reproducing, especially those with defective genes.

i wish ALL people would stop reproducing !  read my article about it here:

(I've been doing 900-1200 for nearly 4 years

either you're mistaken or you're a couch potato.

i burn a thousand calories with just my daily workout ( 20 miles on the bike @ 20 mph ).  i know a caveman isn't supposed to exercise like a pro athlete but i am not - pros cycle 6 hours a day, i only do 1.

if you're consuming less than 1,500 calories and you are fat you simply need to move more.

working out won't help MOST people lose weight.  for example i could easily consume about 6,000 calories a day and i could only realistically burn about 2,000 with exercise.  without a very good diet i would still be fat with any amount of exercise.  i used to weigh 240 pounds while exercising 20 hours a week back in college.

but if you already got your calorie intake below 1,500 calories at this point it makes much more sense to just burn them than to try restricting them even further.

cycling is by far the most efficient way to burn calories.  that's because it uses large muscles composed of slow twitch fibers ( these types of muscles can take a large volume of exercise day after day ) and because it leaves the lungs completely free to pump oxygen at maximum rate ( with swimming and even jogging airflow through the lungs gets somewhat restricted ).

They practice rotational farming and put a lot of love into the care of their animals which really comes through in the meat. As I've said it's the best I've found bar none.
I buy from their stall at the Gossett Brother's Farmer's Markmet in South Salem on Saturdays but they have a stall in Union Square on Saturdays as well as a couple other days in various locations in the city which might be easier for you to get to. They're very environmentally conscious though so you'll need to get to them; they'll never ship their meat.

seems that they sell in Brooklyn.  that's where i live half the time.  thanks.

So far as the caviar I doubt it. Find the department manager of the fish section and ask them, but it doesn't seem like the best place to source it.
Are you close to a coast? If you live near a coast you should be able to find real fishmongers (or whole markets) where they're getting fresh same-day deliveries and have more of a chance of finding something like that.

You can find wild fish at Whole Foods it's just more expensive and usually pre-frozen.
I've vacillated on the topic of frozen meats (It's a hot topic here) but lately have found myself favoring really good quality, but frozen meat, over fresh but lesser quality. I used to taste a difference and feel lower vitality in the frozen stuff but my best source of meat is far and away the best I've ever had, both taste and energy wise, and it's frozen so I put less stock in this now.

yeah i'm close to a coast.  sometimes i am in the san francisco area and sometimes in new york area but both are near a coast.  i am very lazy though - i would rather just go to whole foods :)

what is that source of frozen meat of yours ?

Carnivorous / Zero Carb Approach / Re: Euphoric effects from cacao

next time you want to get high on chocolate - use 85% valrhona bar - it will knock you out ...

66
ok so where would you recommend sourcing the good stuff ?

i have access to "whole foods" - do they have anything ?

the brain uses 25% of the total energy used by your body.  if the body couldn't produce its own glucose it would certainly be storing it.  instead your body is almost entirely protein and fat, with carb stores sufficient only for a few hours.  Certainly people don't go into coma after not eating for a single day therefore the body has means of producing the carbs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluconeogenesis

my father also keeps telling me how my brain needs sugar.  in reality he simply has a sweet tooth and eats candy, cakes, chocolate and ice cream 24/7.  that's how most people reason though - they reverse engineer the logic from the conclusions which they pick purely on personal preference.

I have no intention of "jumping in with both feet" into this deal, i want to sort of tip toe into it.  I am happy with my current diet ( which consists mostly nuts and seeds ) but there is always some room for improvement.

my diet is already LOADED with protein, both vegetable and animal.  in a day i probably consume about 60 grams of vegetable protein from nuts and seeds plus another 200 grams of animal protein from whey protein powder ( 4 - 5 shakes per day with 1.5 - 2 scoops each ).

my diet also has TONS of fat in it, but all of this fat ( and i mean 100% ) is currently from vegetable sources ( nuts, seeds and olive oil ).  i would like to add some high-quality animal fat to the diet.  by high-quality i mean both raw and with a good profile of fatty acids.

i am thinking of what foods of what i have eaten i the past could pass off as raw paleo - caviar comes to mind.  what do you think about it ?

another thing that comes to mind is that bright red salmon stuff.  but is it actually raw?  or did they do something to it ?

also i have to say both the caviar and salmon that i have tasted in the past seemed salty - is that inherent to it or did they add salt to preserve it ?

thanks for any input !

Welcoming Committee / what i don't understand
« on: June 18, 2010, 06:51:48 pm »
i understand the point of eating raw animals - that makes perfect sense to me

what i don't understand is - isn't it dangerous ?  aren't there parasites and stuff ?

i am already close to 100% raw but the fear of parasites in raw meat has driven me to a vegetarian diet.  and i am a protein junkie - a guy that used to eat about 2 pounds of chicken per day.

but now i understand that cooking is whack so i can't grill chicken like i used to.  at the same time i am afraid of eating meat raw.

basically right now i am on 5 huge whey protein shakes a day - that satisfies my urge for huge amounts of animal protein without actually eating raw meat.  but people are pointing out to me that half of my diet is ultra-processed which contradicts my own beliefs that processing food is evil.

so what can i do ?  i would like to at least add raw fish to the diet but i am scared.  i keep seeing that image in my mind of that japanese guys' brain eaten by worms - the guy who liked sushi.

can somebody explain the deal to me ?
