General Discussion / Detox or bad reaction to beef?
« on: August 03, 2016, 01:32:32 am »
Lately, I've been noticing done symptoms that seem to crop up after eating raw animal fat. Last time I had similar symptoms, it was after eating raw, grass-fed lamb fat. The fat was delicious, soft, and chewy with that melt-in-your mouth consistency. The beef fat I had yesterday tasted very similar. However, after both instances, I woke up the next morning feeling pretty down emotionally, weird sore throat feeling but not as bad as when I've had an actual cold, general feeling of malaise/achiness/tiredness. These symptoms lasted a day or two last time and I'm just wondering if this could be a possibly detox from the animal fat or fits a negative reaction to animal fat? Any input? Thanks

Health / A question for the ladies...
« on: July 26, 2016, 02:35:28 am »
I just got my first visit from Aunt Flo since eating more raw animal meats and fat. Oh.My.God. Let's just say that it's literally a scene out of a horror movie. I don't think I can remember ever having this heavy of a period before in my life. Forget wearing a pad and a tampon, I've been going through those ultra-delux super overnight pads in less than four hours!!! :o.

I've heard that periods can be used as a detox pathway in the female body and that's the only reason I can really think of for it being so heavy! Did anyone else experience this it maybe have some input as to why it's so heavy since being RVAF?? Thanks so much!

General Discussion / More calories in cooked meat or raw meat?
« on: July 21, 2016, 02:56:54 am »
I use the Chronometer website to track my daily calories. However, I noticed that when I input an amount of raw meat, it gives me less calories than it does for the same amount of cooked meat. Why would this be? Why are there more calories in cooked meat according to the website, anyway?

General Discussion / To salt or not to salt, that is the question!
« on: July 17, 2016, 10:40:51 pm »
Hey all,
I'm on the fence about salt. I've noticed that when I have any salt (outside of natural salty seaweed or seafood) that I retain water like crazy! I'm pretty thin so I feel I can notice it right away and the bloat from the salt seems to last a day or two after ingesting it which is really annoying. I feel I do better without any salt in my diet but I find that about once a week I'll get intense cravings for chips! Although it's not the actual chips themselves that I'm craving I've realized, but rather the salt on them! Which then leads to the cycle of retaining water and feeling bloated for a few days after guiltily giving in to the cravings. I'm confused because I feel my body is giving me mixed signals; I'll get cravings for salt but then when I indulge (I won't even ingest that much when I do!), my body hates me for like two days after by retaining a lot of fluid! Ugh!!! What's the deal? Anyone else experience this or have any ideas as to what's going on? It seems to happen with all kinds of salt-sea salt, table salt, himalayan salt....except in the case of seafood or seaweed, then seem to be fine. But I'm not able to always consume quality seafood or seaweed every week as it's very pricey here for both so I don't know what to do?

General Discussion / Tallow Uses?
« on: July 13, 2016, 11:50:59 pm »
So I bought a jar of grass-fed tallow last time I was at Whole foods. I have no idea how to use it though lol. Anyone care to share some recipes or yummy uses for tallow for an inquiring newbie? :)

General Discussion / Making Pemmican....
« on: July 13, 2016, 11:49:26 pm »
Hey all!
I'm really interested in making some pemmican but I'm wondering if this can be accomplished if I don't have a dehydrator? I can't really just hang my meat to dry either because there are SO many flies here and it would probably be covered in maggots in a day :'(.  So I'm wondering if there is another way to make pemmican without a dehydrator?

General Discussion / How open are you about your diet?
« on: July 13, 2016, 08:46:10 am »
I'm curious how open all of you are about your diets? Do you eat in front of others at work or keep your nearing on the DL?

When engaged in conversation with an acquaintance, do you openly discuss your diet of the topic comes up?

For me, I tend to eat my lunch (typically a meat meal) at times when others aren't eating because I don't want to make them squimish. However, if they do happen to walk in on me with my face full of a raw meat meal, I will openly answer any and all questions they might have (trust me, I've gotten some pretty surprised reactions). I also openly talk about how this WOE has helped me heal from various digestive issues. If anything, I hope to at least be a walking example of health for what others might consider to be an "extreme" diet.

General Discussion / First time eating raw chicken, tips/advice?
« on: July 11, 2016, 02:45:39 am »
So the farmer who supplies me my raw chicken eggs said he'd be butchering some chickens at the end of the week and would sell me one with organs intact and all! I'm excited because I used to like chicken cooked and haven't even dared try any of the supermarket shit that's pumped full of antibiotics and hormones.  Any good ways to eat it? What is the texture like? I'm also thinking I might try some of the organs as they are small and seem easy to get down.

General Discussion / Raw Coconuts Vs. Coconut Oil
« on: July 09, 2016, 11:48:18 am »
I got to thinking about this while enjoying a delicious raw coconut: Does one reap the same amount of benefits by just eating the raw coconut as opposed to coconut oil?  It seems that there are dozens of articles and research out there that glorify coconut oil and often list it's numerous health benefits. Wouldn't it be safe to assume that one could reap the same benefits just by eating raw coconut meat? I would actually think a person could reap more benefits from raw coconut verses coconut oil as coconut oil is usually still "processed" to some degree. Thoughts?

Off Topic / Kratom?
« on: July 09, 2016, 03:08:40 am »
Anyone ever heard of it! They sell it down here at the pot shop and I've tried some. Apparently it's a part of the opium family? I used to abuse opiates in the past when I was a young and dumb experimenting teen and the high I get from this stuff is very similar! I really like it and it's legal...just wondering if anyone else has tried it?

General Discussion / Hormones me balancing on RAF?
« on: July 06, 2016, 11:56:07 pm »
This question is more directed towards the females but if any men have suggestions or personal experiences with their own hormones in regards to following the RAF diet, feel free to comment.

I suspect I have some hormonal issues going on. Up until a year or so ago, my periods were always irregular. Sometimes they were very light and short while heavy and lengthy at other times. I've also had adult acne that gets pretty bad during menses (but is slowly clearing since being raw). I also went to my gyno with right-sided ovary pain and they found a small cyst. I wassurptises by the cyst because I have never been in birth control but did have the copper iud in at the time and for some years prior. I'm thinking, and have read that the iud can upset the hormonal balance and cause ovarian cysts. I still feel the pain in my ovary though and it gets pretty bad during menses, ovulation, and during orgasm so I know it still has to be there. I'm hoping that by eating a high fat, raw diet, I can hopefully overcome these issues. Do you think this is a good course of action or should I seek other treatment?

So lately, I've really been trying to listen to my body and give it what it craves, I've been eating high fat content beef, coconut meat, coconut butter, coconut oil, grass-fed butter, tallow and realize from tracking what I've eaten that my carbs are generally 20-30g. I feel AMAZING! Don't know if ketosis has set in or not because I've only noticed being dizzy on rare occasion and feeling a bit fatigued at times. However, the extra fat and reduction in carbs has done magnificently for me! I notice changes fairly quickly in my body and have noticed a much more peaceful mindset, greater strength/energy at the gym, more lean muscle definition, hair and skin are beginning to get lustrous and strong (both were extremely dry from going low fat for even a few months), and satiety that lasts for much longer than carbs ever provided me! Just wanted to share some progress that I'm very happy with...I love this way of eating!

I have found the Holy Grail of food combinations...for me at least.  Last night, I melted some coconut butter and dipped some of my grass-fed beef flank skirt in it. Oh my goodness! I have never tasted anything so decadent and perfect! It was like they were a match made in heaven! ;D Mmmmm! I'm hooked to say the very least lol.

What are some of your favorite food combinations? I would love to hear how you combine certain raw foods or even some of your favorite raw food recipes. As a newbie, I'm constantly searching and experimenting for yummy combinations! So share away!!! -d

General Discussion / Let's talk poop...
« on: July 01, 2016, 07:36:51 am »
Ha! Ok, I know that poop is kind of a taboo topic these days but I have some questions regarding poop frequency and quantity on a raw diet vs. SAD.  As some of you may know from reading my introductory post, I got pretty constipated on SAD which really isn't a surprise.  When I switched to high-carb, low-fat vegan or 80/10/10, my bowel movements (regarding frequency) improved from having to take laxatives/enemas to having nice, formed movements at least 2x a day.  Before getting constipated on SAD, I was having 3+ bowel movements a day, typically after each large meal.

Since moving to an omnivore raw diet (lower carb, higher fat and protein), I've noticed I will only have one bowel movement a day.  However, it doesn't feel like I'm constipated or like it's a complete movement which is nice and I'm not complaining about that. However, what I am confused about is that many old texts (from soilandhealth.org along with other data) shows that it is optimal to move the bowels after each meal. I practice Intermittent fasting and typically eat only two large meals a day so I feel I should be having at least 2 bowel movements a day according to the research regarding such.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone else here has noticed a decreased amount of bowel movements per day on this diet. Like I said, I don't feel constipated or like I'm only partially evacuating, just wondering if this is "normal" or if I need to keep working on my digestion so I have a bowel movement after each meal like I did previously while on SAD. Any and all input is welcomed, thank you!

Ok, so some of you may have have gathered from my first post that I am still new to the raw paleo way of dieting as I tried the whole high-carb, low-fat raw vegan beforehand.  I really need some input/advice as far as structuring my new diet though to maximize my goals in and out of the gym.  I know for a fact that my body was screaming for more fat when I was doing the whole high-carb, low-fat vegan thing.  I lost some weight but I'm sure some of it was muscle as well because I just had this scrawny look to me that wasn't all that appealing.  Now that I am eating raw paleo, I want to start incorporating more raw fats into my diet. I first want to share my goals with you guys so you can see what they are and then give some input based off of that. My goals are as follows:

-Currently 125 lbs, 5'6" female with about 16-17% bodyfat. Would like to cut a bit to about 13-14% while maintaining muscle.
-Would like to increase my PR's in the gym as well.
-Would like to consume between 30-50g of carbs while incorporating a mostly ketogenic diet.

Here is where I get confused and need your guys' help.  I have calculated that with caloric deficit, I need to be consuming about 1350 cals a day to lose weight. I was thinking of splitting my macros so that I get about 90-100g of protein, about 100-110g from fat, and only 20-30g of carbs a day...maybe up to 50g on some days.  I guess my goal is to get into ketosis but I'm wondering if the 20-50g of carbs will be a problem in keeping me out of ketosis.  I was planning on consuming some fruit or a baked and chilled sweet potato (resistant starch) before bed to help fuel my workouts in the morning which are fasted.  I am planning to eat a high fat and protein meal an hour or so after my workouts to replenish the muscles for optimal growth. But then, I get confused because I have heard that some people notice greater gains when consuming their carbs right after the workout as opposed to consuming a protein/fat meal?

My daily routine is as follows:

-Train in a fasted state in the early morning before work.
-Eat my first meal (protein/fats) around 12-2pm.
-Eat my last meal around 8 or 9 pm (more protein and fats) followed by my 20-50g of carbs right before bed.

My questions are as follows:

-Even though I can feel my body wanting and needing the extra fat, will I put fat on while going from a moderate carb/fat/protein diet (currently) to a ketogenic diet as the body adapts to fat burning or will the shift just be apparent in some initial fatigue? I just don't want to take any steps backwards and gain more fat while trying to shed it.

-Will the 20-50g of carbs allow me to stay in ketosis?

-When would the best time to consume those carbs be...post-workout or right before bed to fuel the fasted workout?

-How long does it take to get into ketosis?

-What can I expect as far as training while on a keto-diet?

-How long does it generally take for the body to adjust to a keto-diet?  Any cons of entering ketosis?

-Is a keto-diet optimal for cutting to the bodyfat percentage goal that I have or could I reach my goals while still consuming carbs?

The reason for me trying this keto-diet is that I noticed that anytime I consume carbs (especially in the form of fruit) I tend to over-eat them and then not have much room for fat/protein.  I really feel that increasing my fat intake will help with some hormonal issues that have cropped up from doing the high-carb, low-fat thing for a while.  I don't plan on staying in ketosis forever, just long enough to meet my goals. I would sure appreciate if any of you who are more experienced with bodybuilding/weightlifting and a ketogenic diet could critique my plan and hopefully give me some answers to my (many) questions lol.
Thanks in advance!

General Discussion / How to get avatar and signature on profile?
« on: June 28, 2016, 09:20:30 pm »
So why can't I add an avatar or signature like I see other users have on their profile?  I have tried modifying it in 'profile settings' but don't even see an option to add an avatar or signature? Anyone know why this is and how to fix it?

General Discussion / Ideas for making liver more palatable?
« on: June 28, 2016, 10:44:39 am »
I'm still new to this raw meat thing but feel that my favorite meats tend to be cuts of beef or fatty fish like salmon or tuna.  I bought a beef liver and was able to get some of it down mixed with lots of sauerkraut. The texture is what really gets me. Just feels really slimy and it's very bloody. I don't mind that it's bloody so much as the texture that accompanies it...

Are there any ways to make it more palatable or ways of eating it that would better disguise the texture?
I could use any and all suggestions because I have this huge chunk of good-quality beef liver sitting in my fridge and know it's good for me!lol

General Discussion / Getting acclimated to raw fat.....
« on: June 27, 2016, 07:39:36 am »
So...I'm super sensitive as in I'm very aware of my body and all it's actions. G That being said, textures have always played a major role in my diet. I've never liked  the texture of fat in cooked meats so I'm wondering if anyone has a trick for eating raw fat? I have a feeling I won't be able to stand the texture but I need more fat in my diet. Fatty fish such as salmon seems fine but I can't imagine biting into a chunk of fat and thinking it tastes good. Any suggestions?

Health / Parasites?
« on: June 25, 2016, 07:13:49 am »
When my digestion went south on the SAD diet (prior to trying raw paleo), I begin to feel things moving, twitching, and thumping around in my body. It feel like worms...especially in my intestines and it seems to get worse at night. I am going to order some parasite herbs to try and get rid of them. However, since starting raw, these "things" have gone absolutely flipping crazy when I eat raw meat. As soon as it's in my stomach, I can feel things in my intestines and its wuite uncomfortable. I believe I got the parasites prior to eating raw but am curious as to why they seem more active since starting raw paleo? Any ideas?

Hello all!
I am a 27-year old female from the U.S. who has recently embarked upon this raw journey!

A little background info first: I grew up here in the U.S. and was raised on a traditional SAD diet.  I have always been highly interested in health and fitness which is, in part, what lead me to the primal diet.  Prior to adopting this way of eating, I was working out in the gym (weight-lifting and some cardio) while consuming what I thought to be a healthy diet of cooked veggies, carbs in the form of rice or sweet potatoes, and high amounts of lean, cooked protein in order to meat my caloric and macronutrient goals (because I was trying to reach a degree of leaness seen in female bikini bodybuilders).  I had done this for at least 2 years and noticed that while being able to stay relatively lean, my health, especially my digestion, were becoming increasingly poor.  I started searching online for possible solutions for my poor digestion (constipation, slowed transit time, bloating, etc) and came across HCLF raw veganism.  I tried this for about 2 months coupled with a 14-day mixed water/juice fast and found it to be very cleansing. However, I also noted that my energy was slowly declining and my hair, nails, and skin were becoming increasingly dry and brittle. I realized the importance of incorporating animals in my diet and came across this site after realizing that cooked meat was only going to undo all the progress I had made from going raw with fruits and veggies.  I have only been incorporating raw animal meats for about 2 weeks now.  So far I consume raw, wild salmon, raw grass-fed beef (liver and muscle meats), and raw eggs as it is difficult to find anything else unless I order it online.  I am still consuming some veggies like Spinach, lettuce, zucchini, tomato, carrots, and sweet potatoes (cooked).  I am also consuming fruits but in MUCH smaller quantities. I tend to consume papaya, watermelon, mangos, and bananas.  I usually try to split up my food groups so that my breakfast consists of fruits followed shortly by raw eggs (3-4), my lunch is typically a salad of some type with some nuts (sunflower seeds, cashews, almonds, pistachios, or pumpkin seeds), and then dinner is usually 4-6 oz of raw meat that I occasionally combine with sauerkraut or some leafy greens.

I have found that while my digestion is better on a raw diet and bloating seems to be pretty nonexistent nowadays (aside from "that time of the month"), I still seem to suffer from indigestion at times, some constipation...although I term constipation more as my ability to only go 1-2 times a day as opposed to having a BM after each meal (which is how I used to be before my digestion went south), and some occasional gas and excessive gurgling noises in my GI tract. I am sure that it will take some time for my system to totally adjust to this diet though and am hoping to see continued benefits in this area.
So far, I LOVE this way of eating! It feels SO natural and right and I feel I have a great balance of mental calm and physical energy from eating this way.  During my short stint of raw HCLF, I did feel quite euphoric (from all the sugary fruits I'm sure) but found that the sugar crashes were quite terrible and I had to eat ALOT of fruit and veggies to feel full.

Here are a few questions I have that I am hoping some of the older, more experienced forum users might be able to answer:

1. Physical fitness has and continues to be a HUGE focus in my life. Working out has helped me balance some mental issues (diagnosed bipolar a few years back) and just helping me feel better overall. Therefore, I am a bit wary of consuming so much animal fat and fewer carbs.  I am currently still trying to stick to a caloric deficit in order to achieve my body composition and counting my macros.  After reading through some of the posts here, I understand that animal fat is very beneficial for regulating hormones and whatnot but my fear is that if I up my animal fat intake while lowering carbs more, I will gain fat.  Would it stand to reason then that IF I maintain my current total daily caloric intake WHILE increasing my fat macros and lessening my carb macros, would I still be able to efficiently cut fat and build muscle. I know that in the exercise forum, there are males there that talk of eating moderate protein and high fat/low carb with good results aesthetically and strength-wise.  I am a female though and am wondering if I can expect similar results. I was thinking of making out my macros to represent the following split: 30% protein, 50% fat, and about 20% from carbs.  I have always been on the thin/slender side and have a decent amount of muscle on me already. I am currently at 125 lbs and I am 5'6".  I am about 16-17% bodyfat but would like to continue cutting until I'm at about 13-14%. I would honestly love to incorporate more raw animal fat but am just needing some reassurance that upping my overall fat intake will not cause me to gain more fat.

2. Besides proper food combining, is there anything else I can do to help with my digestion/bowel health?  I understand, as mentioned above, that healing is a progress and will take time and I have only been doing this diet for about 2 weeks. I am just asking to see if there is anything I can do to speed up the process as I really don't want to go backwards in terms of progress (like not eating veggies for a bit or reducing fruit intake even more, etc.).

3. Is there a limit to how much meat we should be eating?  Since I came from a high-protein, bodybuilding diet and saw the negative effects of too much protein (albeit cooked protein), is there a limit or guideline as to how much meat we should be consuming daily as I know that meat, even raw, is still acidic and therefore too much could create an acidic/alkaline imbalance?

I appreciate any and all responses and am very excited to be here among like-minded people! I look forward to getting to know you all better! :)
