General Discussion / Re: Detox or bad reaction to beef?
« on: August 03, 2016, 02:47:10 am »
Hey Eric, thanks for replying. You mention that you usually ease your GI system into consuming raw animal fat. Can I ask what symptoms you get when you don't ease your system in to it? Also, I really trust the farmer where I get my grass-fed beef from. I work with his wife and they both know I consume the meat raw and how important it is for me to know that they are truly 100% free-range and grass-fed. They  are humble, trustworthy people who run a small family farm. The first time I ate a decent amount of the raw fat was yesterday but it wasn't that much, maybe 1-2 oz.
The lamb I bought from Albertson's and although it was labeled as being grass-fed...it's always difficult to tell but I was in a financial bind and decided it was better than non-grass-fed meat. I only ate about 1-2 oz of the fat then too and no ticked the same symptoms the day after so that's why I'm curious if it could be a detox from the raw fat.

General Discussion / Detox or bad reaction to beef?
« on: August 03, 2016, 01:32:32 am »
Lately, I've been noticing done symptoms that seem to crop up after eating raw animal fat. Last time I had similar symptoms, it was after eating raw, grass-fed lamb fat. The fat was delicious, soft, and chewy with that melt-in-your mouth consistency. The beef fat I had yesterday tasted very similar. However, after both instances, I woke up the next morning feeling pretty down emotionally, weird sore throat feeling but not as bad as when I've had an actual cold, general feeling of malaise/achiness/tiredness. These symptoms lasted a day or two last time and I'm just wondering if this could be a possibly detox from the animal fat or fits a negative reaction to animal fat? Any input? Thanks

Health / A question for the ladies...
« on: July 26, 2016, 02:35:28 am »
I just got my first visit from Aunt Flo since eating more raw animal meats and fat. Oh.My.God. Let's just say that it's literally a scene out of a horror movie. I don't think I can remember ever having this heavy of a period before in my life. Forget wearing a pad and a tampon, I've been going through those ultra-delux super overnight pads in less than four hours!!! :o.

I've heard that periods can be used as a detox pathway in the female body and that's the only reason I can really think of for it being so heavy! Did anyone else experience this it maybe have some input as to why it's so heavy since being RVAF?? Thanks so much!

Thank you for the reply Satya, I think I'll try to stay within those ranges you provided for a while and see how my body responds. Another question: I know that having too high of protein intake can cause some of the protein to be turned into glycogen in a kerogen if state. I've been keeping my protein around 30-40% of my overall calories which works out to between 80-100g of protein.  I typically shoot for fat being between 60-70% which works out to roughly 100-120g of fat. Do you think those ratios look ok for maintaining a state of ketosis?

Eveheart: I've tried them all---Pink Himalayan Salt, Sea Salt, and regular table salt. They all seem to have the same effect on me.

Jessica: I crave corn chips so maybe I will just try to eat some raw liver next time I get the cravings!

Dariorpl: I'm definitely not drinking too much water...if anything my water intake is probably too little vs. too much, don't know if this could be producing the craving for salt or not. I also like the idea of eating raw corn on the cob...never thought of that!

SB: Great advice as usual. I do feel like tge cravings come on stronger than usual after a higher carb day. I'm not at the point of drinking raw blood yet so I think I'll just stick to seaweed and raw eggs for now!

General Discussion / Re: More calories in cooked meat or raw meat?

Thanks for the replies guys!

Dariorpl-Your reply was especially helpful, thank you for going into detail, I think I understand now.

So my next question would be: What is the most accurate way to track calories for a raw food diet? Any links to calorie trackers that you all are using would be helpful too!

I'm still confused as to why cooked meat would show up as having more calories though? I would think it would be the other way around with cooked meat having less calories since cooking is supposed to denature food and would therefore reduce the size and amount of calories in the meat???

« on: July 21, 2016, 02:56:54 am »
I use the Chronometer website to track my daily calories. However, I noticed that when I input an amount of raw meat, it gives me less calories than it does for the same amount of cooked meat. Why would this be? Why are there more calories in cooked meat according to the website, anyway?

General Discussion / To salt or not to salt, that is the question!
« on: July 17, 2016, 10:40:51 pm »
Hey all,
I'm on the fence about salt. I've noticed that when I have any salt (outside of natural salty seaweed or seafood) that I retain water like crazy! I'm pretty thin so I feel I can notice it right away and the bloat from the salt seems to last a day or two after ingesting it which is really annoying. I feel I do better without any salt in my diet but I find that about once a week I'll get intense cravings for chips! Although it's not the actual chips themselves that I'm craving I've realized, but rather the salt on them! Which then leads to the cycle of retaining water and feeling bloated for a few days after guiltily giving in to the cravings. I'm confused because I feel my body is giving me mixed signals; I'll get cravings for salt but then when I indulge (I won't even ingest that much when I do!), my body hates me for like two days after by retaining a lot of fluid! Ugh!!! What's the deal? Anyone else experience this or have any ideas as to what's going on? It seems to happen with all kinds of salt-sea salt, table salt, himalayan salt....except in the case of seafood or seaweed, then seem to be fine. But I'm not able to always consume quality seafood or seaweed every week as it's very pricey here for both so I don't know what to do?

Satya- Thank you so much for the thoughtful response! I found it very helpful! I didn't know it was so easy to go back into ketosis and that is somewhat comforting to know it won't take another couple of days to get back into ketosis.

I'm curious though, how long were you VLC before you started noticing health issues? This is something I'd definitely like to avoid as I have heard that more females seem to have issues with VLC long term. Also, can I ask how many carbs you tend to consume on your carb-load days vs. your VLC days? Thanks so much! :D

Eveheart-thanks for the suggestions! If all else fails, I can use it for emergency food when the world ends and hey, in my opinion, we aren't too far off from the ending of the world as we know it anyhow....

Yeah, it does suck that's it processed to some degree but my thoughts were that I could use it to make pemmican plus it was on sale and I'm a sucker for a good sale lol. I probably won't buy more unless I can use it in a really good pemmican recipe or something...can't let it go to waste now can I?!

Tyler- I suppose I could try to buy a dehydrator when I have the funds, problem is, I haven't the foggiest idea of where one would even find a dehydrator! l)

Eveheart- thanks so much for the link to the homemade dehydrator! Also, would you mind sharing your recipe for the pemmican with tallow because I have a bunch of that stuff! Also, I'm curious as to why you didn't like the pemmican? Too dry or not enough flavor maybe? I've never had any type of pemmican before so idk if I will care for it or not....

Satya- Thank you the reply! I found it very helpful for my specific bodybuilding goals. I do have a few questions regarding your method of carb-cycling. You mentioned that you add some fruits or starchy veggies to your higher carb days and I'm wondering if you might be able to share what fruits and starchy veggies you add in as I feel I could probably benefit from doing the same thing?
I have been thinking of trying to implement a CKD and my thoughts are that I will try and add in at least 2 higher carb days, especially on my heavy leg days. You mentioned that you do roughly the same thing but I'm wondering, if I eat low carb (20-30g) for 5-6 days then eat higher carbs on my other 1-2 days, will this kick me out of ketosis?

I appreciate the feedback! I, too, am a certified personal trainer but only through ACE so although I feel I have a good understanding of the mechanics behind weight-lifting, I don't have much more than personal experience when it comes to structuring a diet around workouts.

So I bought a jar of grass-fed tallow last time I was at Whole foods. I have no idea how to use it though lol. Anyone care to share some recipes or yummy uses for tallow for an inquiring newbie? :)

Hey all!
I'm really interested in making some pemmican but I'm wondering if this can be accomplished if I don't have a dehydrator? I can't really just hang my meat to dry either because there are SO many flies here and it would probably be covered in maggots in a day :'(.  So I'm wondering if there is another way to make pemmican without a dehydrator?

General Discussion / Re: How open are you about your diet?

Cherimoya Kid- Where do you live that you would be chastised for a raw fish meal?!  :o That doesn't sound very fair at all! I didn't even know they could do such a thing over someone's choice of food.

Eric- It's awesome that you have so many years of experience with this WOE, I'm sure it does shut down the naysayers pretty quickly once they realize that the diet must be responsible for your good health!

Eveheart- I think you make some awesome points on the topic of mutual respect. I think as RVAFers, we do have to be extra careful in how we present ourselves, especially during mealtime. I imagine that if one were to let go one's inhibitions completely and just attack a raw steak in front of one's coworkers, the entire scene would probably evoke disgust more so than a genuine curiosity in the diet and it's benefits. Being ambassadors for this way of living and eating, we have the responsibility of presenting ourselves and our diet accordingly, so as to interest others and hopefully not repel them!

I'm curious how open all of you are about your diets? Do you eat in front of others at work or keep your nearing on the DL?

When engaged in conversation with an acquaintance, do you openly discuss your diet of the topic comes up?

For me, I tend to eat my lunch (typically a meat meal) at times when others aren't eating because I don't want to make them squimish. However, if they do happen to walk in on me with my face full of a raw meat meal, I will openly answer any and all questions they might have (trust me, I've gotten some pretty surprised reactions). I also openly talk about how this WOE has helped me heal from various digestive issues. If anything, I hope to at least be a walking example of health for what others might consider to be an "extreme" diet.

Iguana- Why do you hang it in the fridge? Couldn't I just eat it as soon as it's butchered...seems to me it would be the best at it's freshest, IMO anyways.

Eveheart- As I mentioned in my reply to Tyler, the farmer only raises egg-laying hens, for the purpose of collecting their eggs.  They have a large enclosure with which to roam and the ground they do have access too is well-grassed.  I should probably press the farmer a bit more about what all is in the corn-feed though.  I didn't realize the feed could have some less-than-desirable ingredients in it.  What would be the best questions to ask him regarding what he does/doesn't put in his feed?

Dariorpl- Thanks for the tips on how to eat/prepare the chicken! I liked your ideas, they sound yummy ;D  You mentioned making a "patee" with the chicken and I am curious what that is and how one would prepare that as I'm assuming it isn't a cooked dish...

Tyler- While I agree that buying chicken, even from an "organic" source, can be sketchy; the guy I am getting it from is just a small country farmer. He raises the chickens himself and he only raises laying hens. Occasionally, he will butcher the hens and that's why I am purchasing from him. I have seen their living conditions and they are very good. They are fed corn feed and have free range to eat insects as much as they want. Plus, the ones he is butchering will be young and succulent, only 8-9 weeks old.

So the farmer who supplies me my raw chicken eggs said he'd be butchering some chickens at the end of the week and would sell me one with organs intact and all! I'm excited because I used to like chicken cooked and haven't even dared try any of the supermarket shit that's pumped full of antibiotics and hormones.  Any good ways to eat it? What is the texture like? I'm also thinking I might try some of the organs as they are small and seem easy to get down.

SB, seems you might be meant to mentor me more than I thought! Haha I don't feel an addiction to it like I did back when I was a teen and trust me, if there was a choice for other psychedelics down here, such as DMT, I would definitely be doing it. Unfortunately, psychedelics are difficult to find here in the South given that most people are hooked on prescription drugs....huge market for that down here  -\  What is Sass though? I think I've heard of that before but haven't tried it...can it be bought legally?
