CK- you did mention that, I guess I thought that maybe such large quantities of it might negate the weight-loss aspect lol. At any rate, I'm so glad I have a cast-iron bowel, it never gives me the runs or even makes me have to go! If it did, I probably wouldn't eat so much lmao! ;D

I'm glad to hear that raw coconut probably has more benefits because I have been on a coconut binge lately! Honestly, in addition to my raw meat, I tend to average a coconut a day!!! I just crave coconut and can't seem to get enough! Are there any negatives to consider like possible weight gain from eating so much coconut in a day? I feel like I'm craving it because although my meat tends to be marbled with fat, it's still quite lean and so I think I naturally just crave more fat.

SB- I would love to try making my own coconut butter! Just out of curiosity, do you tend to make or buy yours these days? If you do buy it, can you share where you get it from/which brand you get? Thanks!

General Discussion / Raw Coconuts Vs. Coconut Oil
« on: July 09, 2016, 11:48:18 am »
I got to thinking about this while enjoying a delicious raw coconut: Does one reap the same amount of benefits by just eating the raw coconut as opposed to coconut oil?  It seems that there are dozens of articles and research out there that glorify coconut oil and often list it's numerous health benefits. Wouldn't it be safe to assume that one could reap the same benefits just by eating raw coconut meat? I would actually think a person could reap more benefits from raw coconut verses coconut oil as coconut oil is usually still "processed" to some degree. Thoughts?

Off Topic / Kratom?
« on: July 09, 2016, 03:08:40 am »
Anyone ever heard of it! They sell it down here at the pot shop and I've tried some. Apparently it's a part of the opium family? I used to abuse opiates in the past when I was a young and dumb experimenting teen and the high I get from this stuff is very similar! I really like it and it's legal...just wondering if anyone else has tried it?

31
Eric-Thank you for the info! I will try to contact Inger to ask her some more questions! ;D

Sabertooth- I'm honored you think I might make a decent disciple! ;D haha  I definitely hear you on how the quantity and quality of a VLC diet would impact how long one is able to manage and sustain such a diet. At this point, I feel I am getting a good mix of quality animal meat and fat as long as I throw in some coconut products as well (coconut butter, meat, etc.). If I start noticing that my health is taking a hit, I may try to incorporate more organ meats and whatnot...perhaps I will adjust mentally in this aspect as well as right now I do not really care for organs all that much and haven't tried bone marrow. It would make perfect sense though that one would have to eat more of the whole animal in order to stay on a VLC diet long-term.
Do you guys think that maintaining a VLC diet is a wise idea for a female? Seems most of the VLCers here are or were males. Just wondering if this is even something I should consider doing seeing as that female hormones and genetic makeup is quite different than that of males and therefore the diet could effect me differently long term?

General Discussion / Hormones me balancing on RAF?
« on: July 06, 2016, 11:56:07 pm »
This question is more directed towards the females but if any men have suggestions or personal experiences with their own hormones in regards to following the RAF diet, feel free to comment.

I suspect I have some hormonal issues going on. Up until a year or so ago, my periods were always irregular. Sometimes they were very light and short while heavy and lengthy at other times. I've also had adult acne that gets pretty bad during menses (but is slowly clearing since being raw). I also went to my gyno with right-sided ovary pain and they found a small cyst. I wassurptises by the cyst because I have never been in birth control but did have the copper iud in at the time and for some years prior. I'm thinking, and have read that the iud can upset the hormonal balance and cause ovarian cysts. I still feel the pain in my ovary though and it gets pretty bad during menses, ovulation, and during orgasm so I know it still has to be there. I'm hoping that by eating a high fat, raw diet, I can hopefully overcome these issues. Do you think this is a good course of action or should I seek other treatment?

Hi Eric, I'm curious as to what you mean by:

"Once our body's stocks of these fat soluble vitamins and building blocks are built back up the metabolic costs associated with this diet start to overwhelm the benefits, and it's time to make some changes. "

I thought that a lot of folks here were either ZC or low-carB and had been doing very well for several years following such a diet?  ???

So lately, I've really been trying to listen to my body and give it what it craves, I've been eating high fat content beef, coconut meat, coconut butter, coconut oil, grass-fed butter, tallow and realize from tracking what I've eaten that my carbs are generally 20-30g. I feel AMAZING! Don't know if ketosis has set in or not because I've only noticed being dizzy on rare occasion and feeling a bit fatigued at times. However, the extra fat and reduction in carbs has done magnificently for me! I notice changes fairly quickly in my body and have noticed a much more peaceful mindset, greater strength/energy at the gym, more lean muscle definition, hair and skin are beginning to get lustrous and strong (both were extremely dry from going low fat for even a few months), and satiety that lasts for much longer than carbs ever provided me! Just wanted to share some progress that I'm very happy with...I love this way of eating!

General Discussion / Re: The Holy Grail of food combinations!

I guess the fear of eating the wildlife here is just my judgement of the state in general, seems to be quite dirty and unkempt with lots of industrial plants here that release chemicals into the air all the time. I moved here from Colorado and wouldn't even think twice of eating the wild game there. I'm just hoping the wildlife here isn't as dirty and contaminated as the environment it's living in.... -\

Tyler-I live in the deep and dirty south lol.  That being said, it's difficult to find even grass-fed beef from a trust-worthy source here much less any other type of animal. But, being the "sportsman's paradise" state, wild game (deer, fish, water fowl, rabbits) are always in high abundance. I'm on the fence about consuming the wild game here though as I fear they may be infested with parasites aland I know the water here is anything but clean (near the Gulf of Mexico) and am skeptical about consuming any wild-caught seafood for that reason as well....

Cherimoya-Kid: I eat two big meals a day, my salad and then my final meal consisting of fat and meat. Sometimes I will snack on some veggies/fruit or some fatty foods in between if I get really hungry. I just find that I am typically satiated eating this way and this amount. I don't eat in the mornings because it leaves me feeling lethargic and heavy the rest of the day.  You mentioned several other forum members not eating enough and experiencing adrenal burnout. I definitely don't want to be a part of that camp but am really confused with how much I should/shouldn't be eating. I've always read (and experienced this for myself) that one can only really lose weight by eating in a caloric deficit. I just don't know if need to be eating more calories since the raw food is better assimilated by the body or if I should stick to my current caloric deficit in order to achieve my bodyfat goals? -\

Tyler- That's awesome about the wild blood being sealed in the package with the meat! Where do you buy your wild hare from (assuming you buy it since you mentioned it being packaged) out of curiousity? Would like to order some soon!

I find that aside from my salads and combining my meat with either tallow or coconut butter, mono-eating is far superior and one is able to enjoy the flavors of the food more. Plus, it's easier on my digestion to eat mono or mostly mono meals. BUT, I adore my new coconut butter and beef combo :D

Thanks for sharing your favs, Tyler. Wild hare does sound delicious, I hope to try it someday soon!

Also, I find that without counting calories, I naturally eat around 1300-1500 calories...depending on different factors.  Like I mentioned above, I find that a large salad followed by a fat and meat meal is typically enough to satisfy me for the day. However, because I am very active (both at work and the gym) I am wondering if I am getting enough calories in?  I also am wondering if I am getting enough protein and fat. My carbs are generally between 30-80g depending on the day, fat is usually between 80-100g and protein is typically between 50-70g. I have been feeling a bit fatigued lately but am confused as to whether this might just be my body adapting to less carbs or if it's because my calories are too low?

I have found the Holy Grail of food combinations...for me at least.  Last night, I melted some coconut butter and dipped some of my grass-fed beef flank skirt in it. Oh my goodness! I have never tasted anything so decadent and perfect! It was like they were a match made in heaven! ;D Mmmmm! I'm hooked to say the very least lol.

What are some of your favorite food combinations? I would love to hear how you combine certain raw foods or even some of your favorite raw food recipes. As a newbie, I'm constantly searching and experimenting for yummy combinations! So share away!!! -d

Sabertooth- "Finicky as a feline..." eh? lol I see what you did there ;D  I have been experimenting with different carbs (high glycemic etc) and find that the higher the glycemic index, the worse I feel in a couple of hours after my blood sugar falls again. I have been so accustomed to eating super sweet fruit after being on the HCLF vegan diet and I think it got to the point of addiction, that and without having much fat for energy, high sugar fruits were what got me through the day. Lately, I have been trying to stay away from sweeter fruits though and have been eating a lot more fats (both plant and animal) along with veggies in place of the fruits. I find my energy to be much more stable and I don't experience the huge sugar crashes. I've been finding that a salad in the late afternoon followed by a large meal of meat and fat in the evening suits me very well and keeps my hunger to a minimum. I feel much more satisfied when I eat more fat so I think my body is naturally gravitating towards ketosis or a near ketosis state as I have been recording my intake and finding that I tend to naturally consume between 30-80 g of carbs and mostly from coconut butter, avocados, and my greens. I still need to find my optimal macro ratio but am choosing to just give my body what it craves which appears to be more fat and meat.  Perhaps my body will want more carbs in the future, time will tell.

By the way, your description of your salad had me drooling! I really like all the add-ins you mentioned and might try re-creating such a salad once I get off work today haha! 8)

Sabertooth- I guess I'll just have to continue experimenting and adjusting my diet so what kind of benefits I notice in regards to exercise and my goals. You mention that you are low-carb...can I ask how much carbs you consume on the daily? Just curious ;D

I have never tried pole-dancing but think it looks like a ton of fun! I had a friend who was a pole-dancer and she had a pole at home that she tried showing me a few tricks on. It was fun to learn some moves but it's a lot harder than it looks, that's for sure!

Thank you all for your replies, they were quite reassuring. So I'm guessing that because the body is better able to assimilate the raw food, especially the animal meat/fat, I must simply not have as much waste to get rid of since it appears that those of you who replied seem to go only once or twice a day too.

General Discussion / Let's talk poop...
« on: July 01, 2016, 07:36:51 am »
Ha! Ok, I know that poop is kind of a taboo topic these days but I have some questions regarding poop frequency and quantity on a raw diet vs. SAD.  As some of you may know from reading my introductory post, I got pretty constipated on SAD which really isn't a surprise.  When I switched to high-carb, low-fat vegan or 80/10/10, my bowel movements (regarding frequency) improved from having to take laxatives/enemas to having nice, formed movements at least 2x a day.  Before getting constipated on SAD, I was having 3+ bowel movements a day, typically after each large meal.

Since moving to an omnivore raw diet (lower carb, higher fat and protein), I've noticed I will only have one bowel movement a day.  However, it doesn't feel like I'm constipated or like it's a complete movement which is nice and I'm not complaining about that. However, what I am confused about is that many old texts (from soilandhealth.org along with other data) shows that it is optimal to move the bowels after each meal. I practice Intermittent fasting and typically eat only two large meals a day so I feel I should be having at least 2 bowel movements a day according to the research regarding such.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone else here has noticed a decreased amount of bowel movements per day on this diet. Like I said, I don't feel constipated or like I'm only partially evacuating, just wondering if this is "normal" or if I need to keep working on my digestion so I have a bowel movement after each meal like I did previously while on SAD. Any and all input is welcomed, thank you!

Satya- As far as to WHY I want to achieve a higher degree of leaness--I don't expect everyone to fully understand but reaching the aforementioned degree of leaness is merely a goal for me. I've worked very hard on my bodybuilding journey and just feel this is the next step. I don't plan to stay this lean for a long time but rather just want to see if I can get there, so to speak.

You mentioned that you employ carb-cycling?  I'm curious as to how you personally use carb-cycling (like which days your carbs are higher and typically what are your carb macros for low and high carb days)?  Do you feel your results have benefited from carb-cycling?
Hi.  I am wondering why you would want to go lower in body fat.  Seems like you are already pretty lean.

I find ketosis is more a factor of my exercise levels more than strictly what I eat.  YMMV.

I'm not quite sure I understand the above-statement regarding ketosis as you mentioned previously that you carb-cycle? Can once still cycle carbs while in ketosis???

48
Eric- Thank you for the attention in detail when answering my post, found the replies to be very helpful! I hadn't quite understood that ketosis might not be ideal for the goals I listed while continuing bodybuilding.  I've decided to just take it easy for a bit and try and let my body instinctively guide me, as Eveheart suggested well, to what it wants/needs on a daily basis as far as my fat and carb ratios.  Maybe I will try manipulating my ratios to induce ketosis just for the heck of self-expirementation one of these days but I realize I probably need to slow my roll lol...I'm known for chewing off more than I can swallow haha, no pun intended! :o ;D

General Discussion / Re: Getting acclimated to raw fat.....
« on: June 30, 2016, 01:21:03 am »
Sabertooth & Eveheart-I appreciate the responses and found them helpful.  I know I need to ease up on trying to calculate and weigh everything out.  I'm a very regimented person though and came from a bodybuilding diet where I was supposed to weigh out and calculate macros as closely as possible and I'm finding it difficult to break out of that, being as that it became second nature to me.  I've gotten pretty good though and decreased my incessant need to calculate everything by just trying to consume a set amount of calories (as I still have goals in the gym and need to be following a restricted calorie diet to some degree) but have been letting intuition guide me daily as to what my percentages of fat, protein, and carbs are. Some days I intuitively eat more fat than carbs and some days I feel better consuming more carbs than fat. I don't think I will worry about going in or out of ketosis quite yet but am rather trying to become accustom to better listening to my body and giving it what it wants on a daily basis.

General Discussion / Re: Ideas for making liver more palatable?
« on: June 30, 2016, 01:13:24 am »
Sabertooth-I really like the idea of trying out different types of organ meats and waiting for tastebuds and senses to fully evolve so I can better select what my body really wants/needs at the time. I also love the idea of freezing it and cutting off cubes to eat like that...great idea. Currently putting my liver in the freezer! ;D

YS-I would definitely describe the texture of my beef liver as you described...kinda firm and crunchy but the slimy part comes soon after putting it in my mouth. It tastes fresh but the entire texture in general still makes my stomach turn a bit -\

Eveheart-I really wish I had as many options available as you when it comes to seafood. There are not many...if any Korean or Vietnamese fish markets in my immediate area. Seems I have to drive an hour or two to find anything like that. The South in general is not very health-oriented when it comes to food and the city I live in has NO healthy options aside from the grass-fed beef I obtain from a local, trusted farmer :'( Sad, sad day.
