Re: best way to sleep. IMHO
http://www.rawpaleodietforum.com/off-topic/elevating-the-head-of-your-bed/
7 page thread  :P just had a quick glimpse at it, and immediately thought about something equivalent, but even more natural in my own opinion. Since I've ditched my pillow, I have slowly taken the habit of sleeping on my forearm, like other cultural groups/ethnicities who sleep on the ground or on hard surfaces do.An example of people who sleep this way are the Kenyans, Amazonian tribesmen, and most likely our own ancestors of the paleolithic era.
As for sleeping on an angle, I think our ancestors instinctively positioned themselves with their head uphill when going to sleep.

Here's a photo of a Kenyan man sleeping on his forearm, and one of our distant cousin doing the same. I once found a photo of a Amazonian tribeswoman sleeping this way, but couldn't find it today.

Maybe this thread should be renamed "way(s) to a healthy spine & posture".

I've just taken a glimpse into the Dorn method's website (not sure if it's the official one): It seems to them that a misalignment of the Sacrum could actually be one cause, amongst others, of many spinal troubles and diseases :)!

http://www.dorn-method.com/backpain_causes.html:
-"Although there are many secondary causes possible like a slipped disc, certain diseases, toxins, psychological stress, stones in organs, cancer and other pathology, that all may require specific medical approaches, a Misalignment in the Sacrum (ISJ) seems to be the start of it all, at least a blockage in the ISJ can be diagnosed in almost all patients and is likely co-responsible. "

Perhaps Atlas vertebra correction and Sacrum Correction go hand in hand, the Atlas being the first "piece" of the spine and the Sacrum the last.
GS thanks for the phone number, although I don't know how Dr. Bien Castro could be of any help in my case, given the fact that I live more or less on the other side of the globe. Maybe if he happens to know any North European practitioners. Though I think they have a list of international practitioners on their website, and my mom knows a lot of people working in the holistic health scene.

About maintaining a healthy spine (so once you've cured it, or even before if possible), three practices comes to mind:
-sleeping on the right surface and in the right position
-squatting
-walking barefoot, or in zero drop shoes.

At this present moment I can do neither of the first two properly:

-To be able to sleep in a correct posture, your nose must be unclogged for proper nose breathing, which is not my case. Also I found it difficult to do it right while sleeping with a cover, and I feel too chilly at night to not have one, even when I'm wearing several layers. I think I might just design my own natural sleeping onesie/pijama for the colder days  :P.
Or maybe I'll be less chilly when I'm fully RP/instincto. In a transition period at the moment  :).

Here's a little something I found on natural sleeping positions: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1119282/
If you guys have more info on this please let me know.

-As for squatting, 19 times/20 my right knee makes a very distinctive cracking noise that doesn't sound healthy or normal at all, so I unfortunately avoid squatting too deep when I can.

-Already running barefoot, and wear zero drop shoes from the vivobarefoot brand most of the time; http://www.vivobarefoot.com/eu

About correcting postural problems and recovering from spinal problems such as scoliosis and vertebra misalignments, Quantum Touch seems to be an effective health approach. It's mostly energy work apparently, but just look at the pictures of people cured from quite severe postural or spinal issues on google image:
https://www.google.be/search?q=quantum+touch&client=firefox-a&hs=cEE&rls=org.mozilla:fr:official&channel=sb&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=c_wFVOOLIYmP7AafnYCIBQ&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1600&bih=785

What are your thoughts on quantum touch? Has anyone ever tried this health approach before, and noticed any conclusive results?

Yeah I'm quite aware that this will certainly not be a miracle cure (they say it themselves) to all my health troubles, but at least I will (might) benefit from it regarding healing processes of the body and overall health. It can go in the mix of various health approaches, such as proper diet, lifestyle, exercising, good sleep, etc...

I've been to osteopaths some times, but chiropractic actually sounds like something worth trying out. I wonder however if at least one of the osteopaths I previously consulted wasn't also a trained chiropractor. Will look into it.

Health / Atlas vertebra correction
« on: September 02, 2014, 04:37:35 am »
To cut it short, the Atlas vertebra correction is a process in which your atlas vertebra is put back to it's right place with the use of a vibration device.
The Atlas vertebra is the first vertebra of your body. It supports your head, hence the name Atlas, a figure in Greek mythology who supports the world on his shoulders.  Most people have it more or less unaligned, and this might be the cause of several health problems such as migraines, neck pain, chronic fatigue, idiopathic scoliosis, tilted pelvis, one leg feeling longer than the other, etc...
The vibration device untightens specific muscles and tendons in the neck, enabling the Atlas to go back to it's natural position. Only one session is needed, though you will probably get one or two check-ups later. Because nerves and muscles get unblocked after the Atlas is realigned, it is said that the body's natural healing capacity expresses itself more fully. Some people will find that the health problems they once suffered from, previously caused by the misalignment, tend to disappear over time. Back pain disappears, so does neck pain, less headaches, realigned spine, better posture, possible detox effect...

Here's a website in English that will probably explain it better than me:
http://www.atlantotec.com/en

And here's some videos:
Video: The AtlasPROfilax® method (English version, March 2012)

Gentle Upper Cervical "Atlas" Spinal Correction

I am thinking about correcting my Atlas, mostly because my head and shoulders tend to lean forward (poor posture). I also have light scoliosis, chronic fatigue, and some form of depression which could be at least partially due to biological factor, as opposed to psychological.

What are your thoughts on the Atlas vertebra correction?
Has anyone ever gotten their Atlas realigned before, and could testify to it's effectiveness?
Do you think it's a safe and natural thing to do, realigning it, knowing that most people on this planet have it unaligned?
Do you have an idea what could be the origin, or the cause of almost everybody having their Atlas vertebra misaligned? (I'm open to any suggestion, but know that I will be most dubious of surrealistic explanations such as alien engineering, Illuminati ect...)

Even animals the size of a person can put up a fight. Although it's rare, grazing animals like whitetail deer do in fact kill people. Even hunters who shoot deer with firearms are sometimes still killed in scuffles with the dying animals. While it's certainly possible for a person to catch and kill an animal with their bare hands, as a species we've been using tools like spears, bows and arrows, and now firearms for so long that it's hard to imagine going back to hunting without these. Prior to developing tools, we were probably more scavengers than predators, stealing kills from other animals using our superior numbers rather than bringing down and butchering our own game.

Yes, we can run animals down. If you read thoroughly about that method of hunting though, the hunter always kills the animal with a spear or a knife, never with bare hands. Even animals that are totally exhausted can get a second wind, and all it takes is a well placed puncture wound from an antler, a horn or a hoof to cause a life-threatening infection in a person, or break a bone, or kill them outright.
Agreed. However hypothetically speaking you could also kill the animal at the end of the chase with nothing more complex than a big and/or pointy rock, or a wooden club.
Stone it, or bash his skull open.

And yes, I'm deeply skeptical of Ucles' videos' authenticity. Four legged animals run faster than two legged animals, so I have a hard time imagining he can catch up to a deer or the feral goats without them being hampered in some way, or drugged. I watched a video he showed of him 'catching' a feral deer, and I refuse to belief it was legitimate. The deer trotted through the watering hole he was hiding in, and he dashed out after it having apparently been surprised by its timing. No way he caught up to it without it taking off like a speeding bullet. Deer run fast, far faster than any man over short distances. It's possible to run it down over miles and miles, but you need hot weather and open terrain for that, and someone trained to run marathons. Maybe Ucles is this man, but he's not given any indication of such on his website or in other videos.

Yeah I'm starting to get skeptical of this too. As one youtuber said, it would be nice if he wore a Gopro on his forehead or something when he chases down these animals. Otherwise it's difficult (impossible, really) to tell if this is for real or not. I might send a request on his website, just to see what happens.

It would also invalid (once again, as with the persistent-running hunting method) the argument that humans depend on sophisticated weapons to kill their prey.

Eric is right, although I was thinking about animals more around the same mass as an average adult human, so no giant elks etc...

I understand why Eric would be skeptical about Andrew Ucles' videos' authenticity, although I personally don't think his videos are faked. But until I've seen it live it would be unwise to have a definite opinion about this.

If it is ever possible to kill a medium weight animal bare-handed I wonder if humans or pre-humans ever did it. Maybe it wasn't worth the risk...
How amazing would it be though  :P

What about strangling them, in an arm-lock kind of way? Don't know if it's scientifically accurate, but in the movie "I Am Legend" the main character strangles to death his soon-to-be-contaminated dog.

I stumbled upon this guy's youtube channel while searching for spear hunting videos. This is even better  :)!
He catches bare-handed all kinds of wild (and dangerous!) animals. Here are some of my favorite videos of his:

A quick presentation of his work: http://youtu.be/6gg2d9P6eHA?list=UUvAxJ9OyWcpQl7ft1XrZPRg

http://youtu.be/rUiPmHA7Xqg?list=UUvAxJ9OyWcpQl7ft1XrZPRg

Do you think it's possible to kill one of these animals bare-handed once you catch it, by strangling it or breaking its neck? Or is it too strong?

Personals / Re: Put your location in your profile
« on: August 19, 2014, 07:01:18 pm »
I would like to ask again for people here to post their photos, as I believe it would help us all here to better get to know who we're responding to.  I now it's just an image of a real person, but at least it will help with keeping people straight here, as it's so easy to mix up one name with another, especially when they're mostly make up names to begin with.
Not everybody wants their face shown on a public internet forum, although I see your point about having perhaps more sincere/fair discussion with other forum members, if one gets to see how the other actually look like. However there are several reasons why other people, including myself, would choose not to post a personal photo.

First of all anonymity will make a person feel more comfortable of talking about issues or subjects sensible in its view. Why would a kid with raging face acne put a picture of himself on an open forum, to the risk of getting mocked at by some unworthy forum member(s)? It goes to the person to decide if he can trust the members of this forum to be considerate no matter what written material this person decides to post, or if he has to remain careful and not expose himself too much.

Anonymity also protects you, especially if you happen to be a very attractive woman, against constant harassing from overly crude (male) members. Of course you shouldn't necessarily assume that this situation would ever happen to you, or at least not in such an extreme way that you are then forced to leave this forum. Proof is a lot of attractive girl have made the choice of posting at least one picture of themselves on RPDF. I'm just saying this could be one reason why a person would not post pictures of themselves.

Finally, and something that I find quite amusing in a way, is the gap that you sometimes find between a member's profile pic and what is actually written by that same person. What's more surrealistic than two forum members getting at each other's throat on a chosen topic, while their profile pics show large smiling lads chilling in their backyard, come to think about it?
Of course after some time spent on different social networks you somehow develop the capacity to ignore the absurd break that sometimes happen between mood pictured and written content. Not a very natural thing IMO, but not such a serious issue either. Maybe it's better than no pics at all, if you follow Van's point...

Personally I'm not looking for a martial art that is meant for killing or (permanently) handicapping  my opponent. I can see how these kind of combat sports could've emerged over time, given the fact that there is no true predator left to man, other than man himself.

Observing nature one will find that animals rarely attempt to kill members of the same specie, especially if the animal happens to be a clan member, for obvious survival reasons. The time a wolf does fight a wolf, or a deer fights another deer (ex: during mating season, or when members of rival clans meet), the disputant's aim during the clash will be to inflict enough pain to it's adversary as to force it to abandon the fight. Blood, broken ribs, sure, but if the animal gets a broken leg or something worse from it's opponent, the animal is likely to die. This does happen, but it would usually not be intentional from the opponent's part.

If you applied this to an overly caricatural paleo man's situation, Harry would be fighting Sam because Sam also has eyes for the beautiful Lucy. Feeling too hurt after a good deal of kicks and punches from Harry's part, Sam would then abandon the fight and decide that Lucy isn't worth all the beating up. Sam would leave the battle scene and be off to the flower fields, letting his bruises heal while soaking up the hot afternoon sun rays. Sam is a stubborn one, and would soon seek out another gorgeous paleo woman, ready to take another beating from a competing admirer...

I'll have to look deeper into all the martial arts that where suggested here, but it looks like MMA is quite close to what I would like to practice. Even though I picture MMA as being the kind of place where overly aggressive kids go to throw their punches, without there being a more lifestyle or individual betterment philosophy to it, if you get what mean; As opposed to martial arts in general.

However seeing that Sully practiced or still practices MMA, I wouldn't be surprised to have my presumptions shown wrong.

Thank you Tyler and Eric for your suggestions!

I have to look more into this, but as a first impression (meaning: after watching two-three videos for each martial arts) both ninjutsu and jiu-jitsu appear to me as more "artistic" combat sports, with aesthetically pleasing -and certainly efficient, to some degree-, complex fighting techniques. But can it really be applied in a real life fist-fight against any opponents, be it a martial artist, or just a chaotic run-at-you throw-some-kicks-and-punches thug? If you have any experience with these martial arts, maybe you could clarify this.
Krav-maga already looks more like what I'm looking for, judging by the little I know about it. Then again it seems a bit too defense-oriented, with no real offensive components to it. Am I right?

Also aside of that I would like to know if there is any combat sport out there that is less directed for personal protection and real life, serious fighting, and instead is more fun, unwinding oriented. I had wrestling in mind, but if you know of another combat sport, or a better one that falls into that category, I'd love to know. I was thinking about this when I saw my dog "play" with her mates, and remembering how I used to play-fight as a kid.

Btw I live in Belgium  :P But who knows, the ninjas are everywhere....

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Fighting naturally/fighting smart
« on: July 09, 2014, 08:22:45 pm »
Hi everyone!

I started this topic because I believe physical fighting to be a good way to exercise, keep fit and release certain tensions, in the body and the mind. I am looking for a martial art or combat sport that feels both natural and is realistically applicable in a fist-to-fist situation. I am not really interested in a defense sport that would enable me to take the gun away from an armed man or anything of the like, even though I would not for the matter reject anyone's suggestion of a combat sport that would implement this kind of ability. What I'm after is a MA or combat sport that puts into use natural, functional movements, and in various forms (hands, legs, elbows, standing up, on the ground,...). It could also be a combination of two combat sports: for example wrestling and karate (note: I clearly know very little about combat sports, and have taken part in very few martial art lessons when younger, meaning one year of judo, another of "king-boxing", and some karate and taekwondo here and there)

An example of a combat sport that I don't find natural at all: boxing.
Use of fists only, bad technique (Fist strikes should be used against the softer part of the opponent's body, or else the fighter might end up with broken knuckles or generally just any type of hand trauma. Open hand strikes should be used against harder part of the body such as the head, in my opinion. Might be wrong though; please do correct if it's the case), virtually inapplicable in real-life fights.

This topic is open to any suggestions, or remarks.

and the majority of today's populace are eating freaky livestock. very bad.  is there a movement to stop this monstrous practice?

Creating a demand is one way of changing this situation. The more people buy and ask for uncastrated meat, the more butchers and meat industrials will (have to) provide. Thing is not a lot of people really know, or care to know what's truly on their plate...
So right now the best you can do is continue buying from safe guaranteed sources.

Also wild game usually never is castrated. Probably the same for fish..

Talking about testosterone and libido I remember quite a funny encounter with the family doctor  ;D:

At that time I had just bought a vegan rice protein powder, because it seemed healthier and as efficient as the whey dairy one.
When the doctor found out she said:"If you get your protein powder from plants ,you'll have the sexual strengh of a plant!"
And i thought:"Well just where do bulls get their sexual strengh from?!"  :P

Note: not using any of this crap anymore ;)

I'm all in GS  ;D! Always believed ( kind of in a "you are what you eat" way) that eating meat from an apathetic castrated bull could only lead to less durable health. Left alone the fact that a lot of important nutriants may be missing. It could be one of the reasons why people tend to be less sexually active nowadays, more tired, weaker etc...

However in the wild grown up males are usually the ones that have the most chance of surviving when being hunted on, as opposed to young ones and females, who are usually weaker, slower...thus easier for a predator to kill.
Put in an order, members of an animal group having the highest chance of getting killed:
first comes the yougest, the sick and injured, the very old, then the females, and at the top we find the adult males: stronger, more agressive.

No cheetah would be dumb enough to mess with the later if they had the chance of preying on weaker members of the herd. But hey, maybe one time out of ten, they do get to feed on grown up male flesh.

The point being that perhaps the gender of the animal we feed on is not of the utmost importance in this case, even though uncastrated meat is of course a lot better than the other stuff. Like Jessica I think that exercice and environment is equally, if not even more significant when it comes to hormonal health and balance.
Personally, I think its more complex than just "eat males to be the baddest male/eat females to be the hottest female".

Interestingly there's a community of gay people here in europe (or at least France-Benelux) called the "bears", that really aren't efeminated at all: bearded, beer-gutted, often quite hairy people, wearing lumberjack shirts and whatnot. Kind of an opposite to bakla, or drag queen, or however one decides to call them.
Recently I was making researches on men wearing long hair and found an article written by a homosexual, complaining about how nowadays gay people tend to strongly reject anything that could be considered too feminin, and how he was being criticized by his peer for wearing his hair long. Maybe this kind of mentality is just present in current western culture.

I'm having difficulties joining a picture of a "gay bear" with my ipad, but if you type exactly that on google image you'll see what I mean.
Also you can type "têtu" to have a look at some covers of the leading gay magazine in France-Belgium. Look like average male models/football players to me...

Western mindset - sex is for recreation (made possible by ubiquitous contraception)

Tribal mindset - sex is for reproduction
...and primal mindset - sex is both for recreation (or more like bond creating/well maintaining  between group members) and for reproduction.

No need for contraceptive pills or condoms to have non-reproductive sex, BTW. The female is not fertilizable all year round. Certainly not all month round. I believe it is quite possible for such animals to identify certain bodily signals sent out by the female (could be the hormonal mix in the ambiant air, or some visible change re her reproductive system), indicating the males that it is now "safe" to go! But they could also be having sex randomly at any given time, thus taking the obvious risk of making the female pregnant.

To the people who think homosexualy happens because of poor diet, polluted environment, cold, warmth, roses, barby dolls, missing parents,....fear not!

Even lions living in the most pristine wilderness, feading on the best, purest food they can find, living the perfect paleo life... Can be prone to homosexual acts. It is a thoroughly studied, largely observed occurrence. Homosexual acts are present, and happen commonly amongst most highly social species of animals on this planet.
Homosexuality regarded by individuals, thus -some- humans, as a deviance is only the result of life long social conditioning. Or culture, if you want to put it that way.

(It may seem that I am repeating  what I first wrote on page 1, but sometimes people need a little reminder. Obviously   l))
