Using Xylitol as a carb source?

It's just given me diarrhea, that was mentioned but didn't know it would be so definite. I guess that's out then, but leaving the post for posterity.

For those of us that eat carbs, what do you think of using Xylitol as a carb source?

OK, it's not paleo but it is naturally occurring in paleo foods like berries.

The main benefit would be it's extremely low effect on blood sugar. It's GI is 11 compared to berries c.30, sucrose 100.

Also it doesn't contain any unknown quantities like some fruits and it's easy to measure and store.

Downsides: it doesn't contain any micronutrients...but some of us have got that covered with raw meat. And in fact it may be a positive not to contain any antioxidants...e.g. the study that showed antioxidants reduced the body's own ability to deal with oxidation.

Obvious solution:- don't take processed xylitol, just eat raw fruits instead.

I would say its better than sugar but i read that most of it is produced from GM corn.

I forgot to say that the xylitol from w/e tree source is better than sugar but the large majority of xylitol producers make it from GM corn.

Well yeh fruit is good natch, but xylitol has very low GI and it's an interesting idea to avoid all the compounds in fruit for good or bad...

...but if it makes you piss out of your arse it can't be good for you.

If you crave a sweet tasting substance, try bee pollen

From personaly experience, what I was personally craving was a stimulant from a high sugar food, not the taste of sugar.

But bee pollen tastes mostly sugarish,

best to avoid most fractured foods. Nutrients appear bound with other compounds in nature for a reason. Besides, as much as we know, our knowledge about nutrition and the micro world is yet so limited that we really have no idea what the purpose of the myriad compounds in each food, indeed in each single cell, is to serve.

I love it in the shape of fresh "birch sap". Find out where there are birch trees and hit them when its season. Its delicious and I think its plausibly paleo.

I don't know why you would want a processed sugar when you could get the same thing from actual fruits...
