Oh, and here are 3  photos of a place I visit every couple of years in a sort of pilgrimage:-

It's a whole series of valleys centred around the "Vallee Des Merveilles" with fascinating drawings on rocks from the Bronze Age etc. It's in southeastern France and one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen, barring a few parts of North and South America.

Oh, great thread!

TD, where is your place in Italy?  And what/where do eat when you are there?

On the coast next to the French border.

Choices re rawpalaeo food are limited, really. If I lived there all year round, and knew Italian, it would be easy for me to simply travel into the hills and find some lone farmer willing to sell me a few raw goat-carcasses and the like. Since I know no Italian and only go there on holiday, I am forced to either buy woefully expensive raw seafood from the local fish-market and tourist-trap; or I can get relatively decent raw horsemeat from a local cavalheria. There is raw grainfed beef available which, ironically, costs way more than the raw horsemeat. Raw fruit is easy to get, but not organic - but it's better than most of the intensively-farmed fruits one finds in a supermarket.

Here's the brook (creek) behind my house where I first developed my love of nature:

Here's a sunset from where I lived from 2006-2009:

Some shots from a local State Park (Fahnestock) that we like to hike in:

We've got a nice mix of open water, mountains, forests, and open fields around here. I wouldn't choose anywhere else to settle. :)

I'm impressed, DJR. I'd always thought that the 3 western States were the only truly scenic areas in the US, well other than Colorado, Alaska or Hawaii, maybe. Guess I was wrong.

That seems to be a common trend among people who haven't visited the area. I've got a friend who lives in The Netherlands and he was very surprised at the breadth of surroundings we have when he visited.
I'll see if I can find some other photos to give a better impression of the Hudson River proper. It's humbling when you see it in person from some of the vantages. :)

Not my photos:

Oh gosh, I wish were still on east coast to take pics of my day trips to Vermont and New Hampshire... there is beautiful hiking along the river with crystal clear fresh waters that are so invigorating... these waters are sort of water holes in a huge rock formation, the bottom looks only inches away because it's so clear, but it's quite deep (way over my head anyway)... One can even climb the rock/swim behind the waterfalls.. so pretty!
