BTW, there was a thread on high density grazing here:

Thanks Phil - saw that lecture a long while back - it's what got me interested. Do you have any knowledge or guesses about the efficacy in shallow clay soils with a solid rock base - like we have here?

I don't have any knowledge on the subject, but there are people who do, like this Texas-based advocacy organization:

Free HMI seminars in Texas

Holistic Planned Grazing Improves Soil Moisture

"...simulated holistic planned grazing (SHPG), 'where cattle grazed at high density (66 AU/11 ha) for a short period of time (6 days) during the first week of June each year'" produced pasture that was significantly higher in moisture than other more conventional grazing techniques.

Here's a Texas ranch that employs the principles:

Darn - missed the seminar in Cedar Creek! I'll wait patiently for the next one. Thank you so very much for the link to that org Phil. All the seminars are located where the soil is deeper but you are right - they will know the answer to my questions for sure! The best way to learn more about this is to go to one of their free all day seminars for women I'm sure. Now that's my idea of fun.
