Health / Fluoridation
« on: November 29, 2013, 09:00:54 pm »
I was unaware there was so much info on fluoride being so toxic. When I originally eliminated it from my drinking water I did it just because I thought it was "a bad chemical." However this website shows there's a lot more to it than it just being "bad." The science actually shows it's neuro-toxic and has many other negative effects.

It's interesting to note that every measure passed by the FDA which restricts access to supplements, healthy food, etc. is done under the guise of "protecting the public."

http://www.fda.gov/downloads/Food/FoodborneIllnessContaminants/UCM166069.pdf

"Controlling on--farm inventories of bulk tank raw milk ––an opportunity to protect public health.”

http://www.fda.gov/aboutfda/transparency/basics/ucm192695.htm

"Protecting the public health by assuring that foods (except for meat from livestock, poultry and some egg products which are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture) are safe, wholesome, sanitary and properly labeled; ensuring that human and veterinary drugs, and vaccines and other biological products and medical devices intended for human use are safe and effective"

http://www.fda.gov/Food/guidanceregulation/FSMA/ucm334114.htm

"FSMA was signed into law by President Obama on January 4, 2011 to better protect public health by helping to ensure the safety and security of the food supply. FSMA embraces preventing food safety problems  as the foundation of a modern food safety system. "

All these laws undermine the individual's ability to choose healthy foods and supplements to better their health, while doing nothing to remedy the real threats to public health.

The majority of those outbreaks are by LARGE corporations, not small farmers.

Are there any advantages to adhering to these guide lines?

No. A Kosher diet is just as unhealthy as any other, in fact possibly more so due to cooking foods heavily to eliminate blood which would increase the amount of heat created toxins produced (as well as oxidized fats, cholesterol, etc).

If it makes the patent more comfortable I am located in the south eastern United States, and I would be willing to cut her a break, lets say 100 dollars an hour as a nutrition consultant.

Perhaps those of us here are being too modest and overly ethical, by not jumping on the nutritional guru bandwagon. There are countless people getting tons of money spewing out all kinds of nonsense to the uneducated public.

There are countless shysters who because they have have some degree from some nutritional course where they learned all about heart healthy whole grains, and the benefits of replacing red meat with soy, believe themselves worthy of advising the sick.

So who is there to best represent the Raw Paleo diet and treat people who could most benefit from its potential to heal?

That's actually a good idea. You have the experience of years of RPD, you could call yourself a guru and make some bucks while also (potentially) helping others.

You need to stop posting these lengthy documentaries! I finished watching Fat Head and it was over an hour and a half, now I definitely want to watch this too. I have other things to do lol

In a lot of ways a raw diet could be partially Kosher. Ie. the animal foods could all be from animals eating exclusively non animal foods (ie. beef, buffalo, lamb, horse etc. eating grass) and slaughtered according to Kosher laws. But I don't see how they'd get around the blood in raw meat even if it was drained very well.

Methyl Folate and Schizophrenia

http://www.schizophreniaoptions.com/methyl-folate-and-b12/

"Many individuals with schizophrenia have deficits in metabolism related to methylation, a metabolic process involving carbon donation.   This issues stem from multiple interrelated risk factors involving Cobalamine (B12), Folic Acid (Folate) and Pyridoxine (B6) and the enzymes that interact with these vitamins.

Specifically, low folate levels, high homocysteine levels, and poor folate activation genetics are common in schizophrenia, and these issues appear to confer significant increased risk for development and maintenance of the disorder.  While these deficits occur for a variety of reasons, research has shown that supplementation can correct some aspects of this problem and directly improve symptoms in many individuals."

"Homocysteine is a specific marker for methylation deficits that involve Folate, B12 and/or B6.  Homocysteine is a toxic metabolic step in the methylation cycle (and folate cycle) and high levels of homocysteine have been implicated in many diseases including Depression, Heart Disease, Stroke, Dementia, and Bone Loss.

High plasma homocysteine levels are also common in schizophrenia.   One case-control study reported mean plasma homocysteine levels that were almost 50% higher in schizophrenia compared to controls (16.1 versus 10.9 µmol/L; p=0.028).  Hyperhomocysteinemia with levels greater than 15 µmol/L was seen in 34.4% of subjects with schizophrenia compared to 15.2% of controls (Mabrouk et al. 2011)."

"High homocysteine levels imply that myriad complex metabolic processes essential to physical and mental health are impaired.

One example is Glutathione, an endogenous antioxidant that is often dangerously low in schizophrenia.  In building glutathione homocysteine is first converted to cysteine, the sulfur containing amino acid that acts as its limiting reagent.  Impairment in the complex methylation cycles illustrated in Figure 1 below (from Bradley and Lascalzo 2009) can help explain why glutathione levels are often so low in schizophrenia.  Regardless of whether this is due to genetic abnormalities (e.g., clutamate-cysteine ligase enzyme) or low levels of folate, B6 or B12, intervention is warranted."

"Two problems related to folate have been clearly identified in schizophrenia.  The first issue is clear.  Low plasma folate levels are quite common in this disorder.

One small double-blind study found that 37% of inpatients admitted for schizophrenia had folate levels below 200 µg/l (Godfrey et al. 1990).  A case-control study found high homocysteine levels in schizophrenia in conjunction with folate levels that were half that of controls (8.2 versus 4.2 µmol/L; p<0.001) (Mabrouk et al. 2011).

And these low folate levels appear to matter regarding symptom severity.  Goff et al. (2004) reported plasma folate levels in schizophrenia that are reduced by 43% compared to controls, and they correlated these lower levels to negative symptoms severity as measured by the Schedule for Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) (r=–0.31, N=91, p<0.01).  In other words, there is a correlation between low folate levels and a worsening negative symptoms."

"Kale et al. (2010) reported 36% reductions in plasma folate and 53% reductions in red blood cell folate in individuals with a first episode of psychosis compared to healthy controls.  This study clearly demonstrates that low levels are not the result of antipsychotic medication use."

"In their study of 123 Han Chinese, Feng et al. (2009) reported that subjects with schizophrenia were more than twice as likely to have two copies of the C677T allele of MTHFR compared with controls (31.7% versus 14.6% in controls with p<0.001).  The presence of two copies was associated with significantly increased homocysteine levels in controls and in schizophrenia.  Particularly notable however was that this adverse effect on homocysteine was especially pronounced in schizophrenia, perhaps due to other overlapping genetic risk factors."

"Folate Trials in Schizophrenia

The studies are clear.  Individuals with schizophrenia are at risk for low plasma folate levels and these low levels are likely to impact symptom severity.  At the same time, there is also risk for carrying folate-related genetics that reduce folate activity by over 50%.  In fact, both issues can exist within the same individual because both are common.

Studies using inactive folate in schizophrenia are likely to increase chances of false negative outcomes.  The use of methyfolate is likely to be a more effective treatment approach in general."

Talk about a missing piece of the puzzle! Methylation and folic acid/methyl folate.

A large percentage of the population doesn't have the ability to convert folic acid (its basic form) into methyl folate (its active form) that the brain and body uses.

The active form plays a big role in methylation, which plays a big role in schizophrenia.

"What is histamine and why is it so important? Carl Pfeiffer studied more than 20,000 people with schizophrenia and determined that 90% of them fell into three bio-chemical subgroups: high histamine, low histamine, and pyrroluria - hence the term “The Schizophrenias” (Pfeiffer, 1970; Walsh, 1997b). Histamine is a reflection of neurotransmitter availability. Histamine is integral in balancing the electrical activity of the nucleus accumbens, which is an area of the brain responsible for behavioral responses, filtering incoming sensory information, and communicating with the hypothalamus, ventral tegmentum, and amygdala (Shoblock & O’Donnell, 2000; Otake & Nakamura, 2000; Chronister et al, 1982). A plethora of research has determined that people with schizophrenia have poor ability to filter incoming sensory information. It has also been reported that 15-20 % of people with schizophrenia have high whole blood histamine levels and another 30-40 % of people with schizophrenia have low whole blood histamine levels (Heleniak, 1999; Pfeiffer, 1988; Heleniak, 1985; Chronister & DeFrance, 1982; Rauscher et al, 1977; Pfeiffer, 1972a).

A person with schizophrenia who has high histamine is under-methylated (Walsh, PTC- Ref. B; Heleniak & Frechen, 1989). A person with schizophrenia who has low histamine is over-methylated (Walsh, PTC- Ref. B; Heleniak & Frechen, 1989). Taking detailed patient histories is key (Jackson et al, 1998; Edelman, 1996; Jaffe & Kruesi, 1992; Pfeiffer, 1988; Walsh, PTC - Ref B). People with high histamine have been found with typical symptoms of high intelligence, thought blanking, low grade hallucinations, and thought disorder, perfectionism, competititiveness, obsessions, compulsions, suicidal and seasonal depression, defiance, and phobia.

High histamine individuals are inherently high in folic acid. Although folic acid is used along with B-12 in the production of methoionline it is also involved in histamine production along with B-12. Consequently B-12 and folic acid are strictly avoided in high histamine patient care. These patients need to avoid multi-vitamins.

People with low histamine have been found with typical symptoms of under-achievement, more severe thought disorder and hallucinations, paranoid thoughts with less pronounced obsessions, suicidal depression, cyclic or suicidal depression, and anxiety. (Jackson et al, 1998; Edelman, 1996; Jaffe & Kruesi, 1992; Walsh, PTC - Ref. B).

Excess copper and zinc defiiciency, discussed below under heavy-metal overload, are typical low histamine traits that need to be addressed (Sandstead, 1994; Wallwork, 1987; Pfeiffer & Braverman, 1982; Walsh, PTC - Ref. B) "

Here's a good website with info on the genetic trait that limits folic acid conversion into its active form. There's a test that checks for the genetic trait that limits folic acid conversion into its active form that may be covered by insurance.

http://mthfr.net/

I just ordered a supplement of 10 mg Methyl Folate - http://www.methyl-life.com/methylfolate-10.html - This website also has good info on methyl folate.

I've been taking 800 mcg 3x daily, plus about 1000 mcg daily from my b complex and multivitamin. Today I'm upping it to 1,200 mcg 3x daily, then probably 1,600 mcg 3x daily till the 10 mg supplement comes.

I've noticed I'm feeling more of an overall sense of well being. I sleep much better, have more energy, and am overall more productive. I'm also exercising more, after upping my dose I have more of a drive to go out and get sweating.

I've gotten diarrhea from high meat. I do well on aged meat too. I age all of my meat and prefer it after it's been there a while rather than fresh.

I decided to start experimenting with Methyl-Folate. It's a form of folic acid that is actively used by the body, and even crosses the blood brain barrier.

"There are no recognized “distinctive nutritional requirements” for depressed patients, but based on neurochemistry, it makes sense that folate might help. How? Well, folate is first converted into dihydrofolate (DHF), and then into L-methylfolate (Deplin). L-methylfolate is the “active” form of folate in the brain; it helps to form tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), a crucial cofactor in the synthesis of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. In theory then (even though this has not been proven), low levels of folate could cause neurotransmitter deficiencies, which could then be corrected by L-methylfolate supplementation. Because L-methylfolate is involved in the synthesis of three monoamines, Dr. Stephen Stahl has dubbed Deplin a “trimonoamine modulator” (Stahl SM, CNS Spectrums 2007;12(10):739–744)."

Here's a good article explaining the conversion process needed to make the active form of folate (methyl folate).

http://evolutionarypsychiatry.blogspot.com/2011/08/folate-beginning.html

I'm looking into whether I'll get a prescription depending on how much it costs. A prescription would probably be pretty expensive since I don't think insurance covers it.

I'm thinking of buying the 5 mg (90 caps) from this company - http://www.metabolicmaintenance.com/category/cognitive_support

That's probably the best price and supplies a good amount. The supplements I've seen in Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods, etc. are typically only 400 mcg (some times 800).

The Methyl Folate is actually something a previous psychiatrist recommended and also something my primary care physician suggested.

For now I'm taking about 2,000 mcg daily till I get one with a higher potency.

You could try feeding them RAF. However I'm going to suggest an alternative course of action you may not want to hear.

I've had family members with beloved pets that get sick and they end up spending thousands upon thousands of dollars to get them better, only for them to die in the end.

The medical care provided to animals is generally no better than the medical care provided for humans. Generally they're very expensive, and very ineffective.

At the end of the event, my family member was thousands in the hole, with nothing to show for it. After the incident she explained that if it were to happen again (ie with their next pet), she'd put them down.

I've continued reading Dr. Howell's book. He explains how soaking seeds decreases enzyme inhibitors significantly, and within 24 hours completely removed enzyme inhibitors. He also explains germination increases the enzyme activity.

I started soaking my seeds. I'm considering making high meat. But I feel the dry aging I do is sufficient for starting the pre digestion process.

I do think that animals do communicate telepathically to help them learn new skills, and this also applies to humans.

"During the 1950s, macaques on the island of Koshima learned to wash sweet potatoes and explicitly passed this skill onto younger members of the group.

According to Watson and Blair, this behaviour then spread and was observed on neighbouring islands among groups of macaques who had never seemingly come into contact with each other.

They chalked this up to the monkeys sharing a collective consciousness, often referred to as a ‘shared mind’ or ‘hive mind’, in which the practices were shared telepathically."

I think that we all share a sort of collective consciousness. It's actually something I've thought for a while now.

I was reading up on the book "Enzyme Nutrition" by Dr. Edward Howell and he actually talks about raw meat dishes around the world. And especially mentions the Inuit. He describes their "high" meat and fish as being broken down by enzymes saving the body enzymes that would be needed to digest it.

He also mentions raw honey and its high enzyme content. Very good information.

Going strong on 10 mg of the geodon. Exciting! Lol

Still eating an oz of brain daily, I can't go without it! Lol I feel like the brain is really helping a lot.

I started using Iguana's method of cleaning meat with seawater. I've learned from experience that New Zealand lamb and brain (both of which come pre packaged in plastic) will start smelling while aging. So I put some Redomond's Real Salt in distilled water and dip them in. It eliminated the smell completely.

Still taking a tsp of FCLO. I'm considering decreasing it to maybe 3/4 or 1/2 tsp.

Still taking 50 mg Lugol's iodine daily.

I started putting 3 drops of Blue Ocean Minerals in each gallon of water, in addition to the pinch of salt. The 3 drops of BOM adds about 12 mg magnesium to each gallon of water.

The 300 tons...  I wonder what that really means.  For instance, if one were to add one drop of radioactive water to an olympic size swimming pool, theoretically that pool would be considered radioactive waste....  do you get my meaning?

Yes. I'm not sure exactly to be honest.

For me to stop eating food grown here in Ca.  someone would have to show scientific data revealing levels of radioactive material, in say a piece of cow, and how it related to any significant danger to my body.    Not to say I'm not interested.

The articles are conflicting. Some say everything grown and raised in California are contaminated, while others say only certain things are contaminated, some say nothing is contaminated.

"Milk samples taken across the United States have shown radiation at levels 2000 percent higher than EPA maximums."

http://biontologyblogging.com/radiation-fukushima/

"Good News: It seems, as of August 2011 in California, many of the vegetables are not contaminated with radioactive isotopes.

“8/16 (6:48pm): We just finished testing a sample of carrots and a sample of cherry tomatoes, both from a local organic farm that has supplied most of our strawberry samples. No radioactive isotopes from Japan were detected.”"

"Bad News: If you drink milk from California, there still seems to be detectible levels of radioactive Cesium.

“9/27 (12:17pm): We have posted two new store-bought milk samples with Best By dates of 9/26 and 10/1. We continue to detect low levels of both Cs-134 and Cs-137.”

And from raw milk as well:

“9/1 (4:22pm): Two raw milk samples were added to our raw milk page. Both samples come from a single dairy the Sacramento area, and one sample is cow milk and the other is goat milk. Both samples show detectable levels of Cs-134 and Cs-137.”"

http://geigercounter.com/fukushima-nuclear-california-dairy-products/

I'm eliminating them more on a precautionary basis. I can't say definitively that the food I've been getting from California is horribly contaminated. But I've seen so much info on food being tainted that I prefer to eliminate them and er on the side of safety. Especially considering my animal foods haven't been coming from California and they're the bulk of my diet. While plant foods make up a very small amount (maybe 5-6 pieces of fruit daily), so making sure my fruit (mainly bananas, lol) is from elsewhere is doable.

You'd have to include rejecting all foods grown in Ca.,, as in beef etc. for the rains are dowsing the grass that the cows eat.

I'm considering rejecting foods from animals fed food from California. Ie. Eggs fed feed from California. I'm considering giving Miller's a call and asking about their chicken feed.

It would be a different story if the whole crumbling plant with it's hundreds tons of highly radioactive spent fuel is washed away by a typhoon or another tsunami.

It's my understanding it's leaking over 100,000 tons of radioactive toxins annually.

"Then yesterday, the government estimated that some 300 tons of radioactive water are pouring into the ocean each day."

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=210253942

Look, this is all bullshit scaremongering. Radioactivity of the kind  at Fukushima would long ago have become diluted in the world's oceans to the point where it was quite harmless.

To each their own. I'll be eliminating produce and animal foods from California. I personally don't think 300 tons of radioactive water pouring into the ocean daily is diluted so easily.

The meltdown happened in 2011.

"Now to Japan for an update on the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. It was heavily damaged by an earthquake and resulting tsunami in March 2011, leading to several meltdowns."

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=210253942

While the Japanese government doesn't say it's been leaking 300 tons daily since the accident started. 300 tons even over the course of one year (300 tons x365 days/year = 109,500 tons) is a substantial amount.

TEPCO didn't admit it till much later, but potentially it's been leaking that much the whole time.

"But certainly, it's not a good situation, and I think it's as much about public trust as anything else. It took TEPCO a long time to admit this leaking was happening."

I think the media is underestimating the true extent of the damage that will (and has been) be caused by it.

You might want  to ask the question, what's worse;  the possible radiation or the fear of it.

I think I'll feel better knowing I've eliminated the source of the radiation (at least the main source), giving me peace of mind knowing I don't need to worry about it.

Is it extracted from Natto?

No. The kind of K2 extracted from Natto is MK-7.

"K2, the vitamin extracted from fermented natto soyfood, has been shown to have greater levels of absorption in the blood than commonly used vitamin K, as well as reducing several risk factors for osteoporosis, suggest new findings."

http://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/Research/Natto-vitamin-K2-superior-to-vitamin-K

I prefer the MK-4 form which is what's found in pastured animal foods.

"Two forms of vitamin K2 supplements are commercially available: menaquinone-4 (MK-4), also called menatetrenone, and menaquinone-7 (MK-7). MK-4 is a synthetic product that is believed to be chemically and physiologically identical to the vitamin K2 found in animal fats. This form has been used in most of the animal experiments and in the Japanese osteoporosis studies. Although synthetic, it is effective, and there is no known toxicity. MK-7 is a natural extract of natto, a fermented soy food popular in Eastern Japan. MK-4 is much less expensive than MK-7, but no studies have yet compared the efficacy of these two forms."

http://www.westonaprice.org/fat-soluble-activators/x-factor-is-vitamin-k2#supplementing

By "synthetic" they mean that is it's not a food extract. None of my supplements are (except the blue ocean minerals and FCLO) and all the sources I've seen say they're exactly the same chemically.

"Natural vs. synthetic ascorbic acid

Natural and synthetic L-ascorbic acid are chemically identical, and there are no known differences in their biological activity. The possibility that the bioavailability of L-ascorbic acid from natural sources might differ from that of synthetic ascorbic acid was investigated in at least two human studies, and no clinically significant differences were observed. A study of 12 males (six smokers and six nonsmokers) found the bioavailability of synthetic ascorbic acid (powder administered in water) to be slightly superior to that of orange juice, based on blood levels of ascorbic acid, and not different based on ascorbic acid in leukocytes (white blood cells) (1). A study in 68 male nonsmokers found that ascorbic acid consumed in cooked broccoli, orange juice, orange slices, and as synthetic ascorbic acid tablets are equally bioavailable, as measured by plasma ascorbic acid levels (2, 3)."

After doing some research for the past few days I came across some really interesting information about the relationship between Retinol (Vitamin A) and Iodide uptake: Retinol significantly increases Iodide uptake as well as protein iodination, therefore the more Vitamin A and protein one eats the more thyroid hormone the body produces.

Could you elaborate on what "protein iodination" means and also possibly post the links where you found that info?
