General Discussion / Pakistani lamb
« on: September 28, 2011, 08:35:07 pm »
Has anyone got any idea what the quality is likely to be?

It tastes ok, but seemed a bit queasy like grain fed meat.

It's easy to convince myself it's grain fed and gonna cause problems, but I don't know. Apparently it's hard to grain feed sheep which is why lamb is usually ok.

Thoughts.

Hot Topics / Botulism may be endemic to eskimo diet, not just modern

This interesting article discusses botulism from incorrectly made 'high' products which has been discussed, but also mentions that botulism is a hazard of the eskimo diet due to aquatic foodstuffs e.g. raw rotted whale.

Also worth following the links at the end, they're interesting.

Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Lotus Root
« on: September 28, 2011, 04:11:47 pm »
Anyone had any experiences with lotus root?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelumbo_nucifera#Uses

I tried some cooked and thought it might be a good veg to eat raw. Would probably be a good idea to drop it in hot water for a couple of seconds to kill the parasites mentioned.

Health / Ultratrace - mineral supp. from the salt lake. Thoughts?
« on: September 18, 2011, 06:43:33 pm »
I've been taking this supplement from Higher Nature.

http://www.highernature.co.uk/ShowProductFamily.aspx?ProductFamilyID=347

The reason I got into it was because minerals help me with anxiety, mental clarity etc and I can't stand the gelcaps with fillers on a paleo diet - they make me feel sick. I notice a big difference when I take it in terms of mental state. Sure some would say placebo, but I'm convinced.

What are your opinions of taking it longer term? It could boost minerals and be a way of hedging my bets against low magnesium paleo diet etc.

It comes from sea water ultimately from the salt lake in Utah. So sea water is not a 'food' and may have dangers. At least it doesn't have a load of crap in it though.

I've read a couple of Lyle McDonald books 'the ketogenic diet' and 'a guide to flexible dieting' and he seems pretty spot on in his recommendations for standard low carb and normal eaters. I recommend a read.

Both of them particularly the latter have helped me to clarify a few thoughts about why raw paleo can be hard to stick to and harder to do 'flexible dieting' with.

For people just wanting to lose weight his idea of a couple of 'free meals' a week where you can eat a meal with some junk as long as you don't go mad is good psychologically and practically and for raising hormone levels.

For standard dieters or low-carbers he also introduces refeeds where you eat a certain amount of carbs over a controlled time period. Some people have managed to adapt to low carb in the long term by just sticking it out for ages, but for those who can't for whatever reason (and we don't know for sure that everyone can in the same way) it seems good as it's likely that you still get adaptions to ketosis if you do this.

It also increases hormone levels so metabolism, sex drive etc can return which is good if you're in a period of life where you can't really wait for the adaption to take place.

I think his approach is great for standard dieters rather than the 'strict..strict..strict...FAIL!' approach that most people invariably take.

Display Your Culinary Creations / Fruit with avocado cream
« on: June 18, 2011, 07:53:55 pm »

Mashed up ripe avocado with banana and cherries. The avocado makes it more filling/easier not to eat too much fruit.

I might also try adding cocoa powder sometime for an indulgence.

Hot Topics / Your fav way to gently heat meat?
« on: June 14, 2011, 09:56:54 pm »
I've found it hard to gently heat meat without cooking it. I don't really like it cold. A plastic bag under the hot tap works for small pieces of fat or meat, but not really good for a big portion.

What are your favourite ways?

General Discussion / Interesting point of view - counter low carb
« on: June 02, 2011, 03:20:02 am »
Hi. Alan posted this in Lex's journal. I found it interesting, so thought I'd break it out here.

Basically a blog post, and a link to a more academic letter questioning whether humans are meant for low carb diets, and proposing that carbs, in particular starches could have formed a large part of our diet.

http://donmatesz.blogspot.com/2011/05/who-said-paleo-diet-was-high-in-fat_28.html#links

I'm very interested to hear your comments and critiques of these ideas. It sounds fairly plausible but the devil is in the details. I admit I'm not strong on all the details of the theory. If I read Cordain, he has me convinced, and this seems plausible.

Even after a while on low carb, I can't deny that I don't feel half as good..maybe that can continue to change.

What are you thoughts?

General Discussion / Why would raw meat cause digestive problems?
« on: May 08, 2011, 10:16:22 pm »
Hi. I'm back again in my ongoing quest to be able to eat raw. I have been trying people's suggestions with no luck so far. The acid problem seems gone.

It seems like the only issue I have now is that if I eat wholly raw for a few days, I feel ill and under the weather, feel terribly sluggish in the mornings and brain doesn't work properly, and my stools are infrequent loose and nasty. Should I push through and see what happens or what?

I'm trying to look at it rationally and think of reasons why this could be happening.

Why is it giving me problems to digest?
What are the differences in how our systems digest cooked and raw meats?

If you have any ideas it would be much appreciated. Google is just giving my veggie propaganda.

This happens whether I eat a bit of carb, or no carb.
I can exist on cooked meat with no apparent digestive issues, and feel ok.
Too much rare meat does the same thing as raw.
I have been phasing it in, but it seems hard to get used to the raw.
Prefer the taste of raw now and am craving it.

Why Why Why? I don't understand why I can eat cooked not raw it makes no sense. ;)

I'm getting a bit sick of training at the gym, and thinking of training at home with a minimal setup and gradually adding more.

This guy Pavel Tsatsouline pushed a workout around just 2 exercises deadlift and side press.

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBsQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsfuk.tripod.com%2Freviews%2Fpavel_pttp.html&ei=H1TCTfiaJ46JhQe_sqytBQ&usg=AFQjCNGP9VeFIc8XXzJ2HumGx5QfToUpvQ

But that's his schtick and other people are not sure.

There is also this info here

http://stronglifts.com/strength-training-with-only-one-barbell/

Most people seem to recommend getting a squat rack at some point, and you can make your own with 4x4s in plastic buckets filled with concrete. And this guy has made his own dip station.

I was just wondering if anyone had experience with minimal equipment/just barbell workouts.

My goal is just to get as strong as possible at the moment. I would have thought I have to do a fair bit of volume at first as I'm far from massive.

General Discussion / Foods or things that can reduce stomach acid
« on: April 30, 2011, 05:12:30 pm »
Hi. I'm working on an idea that some of my digestion problems are caused by my stomach becoming too acid in order to handle cooked meat, so it's too much for raw meat.

Do you know anything I could try to reduce the acid and see if it helps?

I tried some antacid pill the other day and it felt worse if anything. I'm reluctant to invest in a load of edible clay because I'm not sure if it will help and hope this won't last long.

Any ideas? Don't mind if it's not strictly raw paleo or non-medicinal as I think it will be very temporary.

Is glycogen stored in skeletal muscles on a zero carb diet?

I'm thinking about the potential to produce short bursts of energy.

According to 'body by science' FWIW this can be accomplished by glycogen in skeletal muscles instantly converting to glucose for energy.

Some zero carbers report diminished ability to sprint etc.

Thoughts?

I am finding carbs get on my nerves and enjoying zero. However, short bursts important to martial arts etc. which I do.

General Discussion / Not hitting mineral targets
« on: April 07, 2011, 01:35:05 am »
Revisiting the topic of minerals:

I've been using fitday and noticed that I am not hitting anywhere near RDA's of minerals like magnesium and potassium.

If I play around putting in 100% raw meat, and with adding nutrient dense foods like liver, sea fish and oysters it's still not what they say.

So either the RDA's are very off base, or it's very hard to get enough from RPD. Or of course somewhere in between the two.

Some people say the food source is depleted of these minerals through agriculture so they're not in meat.

Some people recommend edible clays. I can't find any nutritional data for these, in fact I found a lot of handwaving when searching.

What do you think? And if you do hit nutritional targets, how, what are your strategies?

General Discussion / How long between cooked and raw meals?
« on: April 04, 2011, 08:49:03 pm »
Hi. What is the minimum time to leave between cooked and raw meals in your experience?

I left about 5 hours between yesterday and had a bit of stomachache...not sure if it was mixing or what but I've usually got iron guts.

Health / Does anyone have ADD/ADHD?
« on: March 30, 2011, 07:35:38 pm »
I've been reading another forum, and looking at information, and I feel strongly that a lot of the problems that brought me to looking at diet are to do with an attention deficit disorder. The list of problems fits like a glove.

At the moment I'm thinking of going the medication route as if I self-medicate with coffee it's like night and day as to how I can function, but I can't sustain using coffee.

I guess that some of us are anti-medication, and I am cautious in a lot of ways but on the other hand it's a case of being able to function well enough to keep earning to pay for good food, and being together enough to sustain consistently being on the diet so there's that.

I'm very interested to hear if anyone has this condition, knows about it and experiences/stories with raw paleo and other treatments.

If you don't post much, feel free to pm me if you want.

General Discussion / Dealing with low appetite
« on: March 13, 2011, 10:26:47 am »
Sorry if this has been done before, but I couldn't find any discussion.

How do you handle not having appetite?

I was overeating before, making myself eat a lot of meat and fat and it caused problems.

Now I seem to often only eat a very small amount of raw food before wanting to stop. In the past, I've become weak by not eating enough, so I don't trust my instincts either.

Options:

Just eat what I want and hope it works out.
Force myself to eat past when I want to a bit
Fill up on foods I can always eat like egg yolk
??????

Any thoughts?

General Discussion / High meat indoors
« on: March 12, 2011, 01:18:16 am »
I have acquired a mini drinks cooler - like a little fridge that runs on a fan. It's too expensive and noisy to run, but was thinking of using it for high meat.

Thought I'd run the plan by you guys in case I've missed something..

Put meat in a jar in a plastic bag. Place into mini drink cooler. Put it in my bay window with the window ajar and inside door closed so stink can get out.

To air high meat, step inside bay window and close door. Wipe cooler clean to remove fly eggs if present. Open window wide and Air meat. Let stink out of window. Go back out and close door. Repeat every couple of days.

Any thoughts?

General Discussion / Deficiency of dopamine
« on: March 01, 2011, 08:14:29 pm »
I'm considering the possibility that I might have a deficiency of dopamine.

I've always been a bit attention defecit, and have a pattern of feeling down, lacking motivation and not taking pleasure in life.

Not to make it sound terrible, it's a low level thing sometimes and raw paleo is good.

When I have coffee though, it's like night and day.

There are various supplements available like l-tyrosine and SAMe. Before I start messing about with that shit though, I thought I'd see what the raw paleo crowd think and if anyone's experienced this.

General Discussion / Feeling and looking a bit seedy
« on: February 17, 2011, 08:18:04 pm »
Been doing raw paleo VLC for 5 weeks now and sticking to it. Longer than I've truly managed low carb before.

I eat up to a kilo of meat and fat a day, less if I don't feel like it. Top quality grass fed mince/ground beef as it comes, with occasional heart and tongue roughly the same proportion of fat.

Have had 4 oysters on the weekend twice in that time.

30g carb a day, mostly from butternut squash and a few times from fruit.

I went through about 3 weeks of feeling fantastic, high libido looking good. I am eating fairly high protein, and think this made it easier to stick to than 70-80% fat that I tried before.

To be honest now though I feel slightly under the weather. Not terrible, I can get through the day ok, but not very good.

The skin on my face also looks worrying. On higher fat diets, my skin always looked great. Now it looks a bit aged, and is quite porous.

So the question is, push through it or change something? And if so what?

No answers like, 'just change to my version of raw paleo' please! I know people can do well on what I'm eating or other diets, so trying to pin down what exactly could be the problem.

Off Topic / Can't eat that crap again
« on: January 30, 2011, 03:38:40 am »
I've been pure RP for about 5 weeks. I was out late so decided to give cooked meat a go. I had some lamb ribs which used to be my favourite. Can't eat that horrible shit again! It tasted of feces and the fat made me feel sick. I can't wait to get it out of my system.

I think this is a real turning point, now I can't wait for a clean raw meal, before it was a chore and I craved cooked, so stick with it if you're new.

Health / Steroid spray before nose operation - alternatives
« on: January 27, 2011, 02:06:20 am »
I broke my nose and have to go into hospital next week to get it reset. In the meantime I have been prescribed a steroid spray Avamis (Fluticasone) to inhale.

It doesn't sit well with me, as it has side affects on the hormone balance in the body.

However it's an unnatural situation, as they want the swelling to go down fast from the original break so they can re-break it and put it in position.

Thoughts/Experiences?

Any natural remedies that are believed to make inflammation go down?

Health / Helminthic worm therapy

Has anyone here tried Helminithic therapy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helminthic_therapy

i.e. deliberate 'infection' with hookworms or whipworms, to cause and regulate immune response.

Just curious about it.
