Hot Topics / Re: Vege diet's affect on the liver
« on: January 12, 2011, 11:02:30 am »
I was in Chinatown today on some business and I decided out of curiosity, to see a Doctor in Traditional Chinese medicine.

He mentioned that my liver was a bit puffed up. I knew this from Ayurveda assessments, so no news there.

When I told him I had been a long term vege and the last year I was eating a raw diet with meat, he explained that the liver issue was a result of being a vege. He said that the lack of iron and vitamin d is the cause.

Interesting indeed, because all of the modern Ayurvedic docs (that I have met) highly recommend being a vege. The original texts are not even vaguely vege as they are full of meat references. They suggest meats by using their properties as an antidote to the excesses of the opposite issue in the body.

In other words if a person has a condition where there is fluid build up, (oedema) then a dry meat is prescribed. In a case of a wasting disease, the meat of a very heavy solid animal is prescribed. Etc. etc.

This was a fascinating discovery and has blown away the remaining doubts I have about this diet.

Vegan/Vegetarians have tried hijacking ayurveda too. My sister is deep into ayurveda - but refuses non-veg, even though she is having more issues than her hubby (who actually loves/thrives on SAD).

Athletes are like the 0.1% of smokers who get to live past 90 years old. Just because some of them get to live that long doesn't mean smoking is not dangerous. How athletes react to cooked food is just not relevant, they have best genes a human could hope for while some of us here are on the opposite side of the gene spectrum.

Its not all genes. They undergo surgeries/drug regime etc to perform -  that is not my definition of health, its a very narrow perspective on health: redefinition of the word athlete and health.

Life can be long and health can have many facets. ( i would much prefer a short one)

Me neighbors (husband and wife) are both olympic athletes in their late forties - i think a lot of you will have better health at that age - most of them are like the US economy - borrowing from the future health.

There may be a point when humans don't have to perform maintenance on sophisticated machines because of being able to sustain themselves. Then, there goes the maintenance work for humans too.

Inspite of all the glamour of science i really doubt humans will merge with technology.

After delving into qigong/taichi i have realized that we humans have not even aware of the connection to the very body we posses & strange thing is that very few even talk about it ..

..who knows.. maybe we all here downplay the advantage that wealth, airtravel and 'banging sluts' provide.
being in the zone (mentally/emotinally/physically/spiritually) - does compensate a bad diet (or lifestyle) to a certain extent.

For some short peroid of my life i have been there, food and sleep were not necessary, used to get away with very little food/sleep. But whatever little i ate i used to chew like crazy....

It would also be interesting to know how long it took to get cured on this diet.

I've been raw paleo for almost a year and still suffer from quite severe eczema; couldn't get to sleep last night until 8:30am this morning due to the itching. I hope this will change with time. The only thing that seems to "cure" it is sunshine...in summer it disappeared completely and when I travelled to the tropics my skin was in excellent condition. But unfortunately it's winter here now.

your case seems similiar to my wife's skin/eczema. Fish makes her feel better (even bone soup) - citrus fruits make it worse for her. EVOO massage seems to help to.

this is not feasible for people who live in metropolitan areas.  i would not eat anything grown within 100 mile radius even if it is grass-fed because of proximity to industrial pollution and so many highways.

probably true. i have seen that grass fed beef (and raw milk) around where i live is not great (Central NJ). however when i get them from remote locations, they tend to be better.

Well, slanker's offers only grassfed meats, afaik, so their raw pork should be fine.

do you recommend any specific cuts from a pig - to a beginner like me.

Sabertooth, Rome had a wonderful civilisation, but slavery was one of the reasons it was eventually destroyed, according to Gibbon. At first glance , slavery might seem like it benefits the masters but it actually weakens them, making them too dependent on such slaves.

True Tyler,
we had Slave Kings in India, who were slaves to begin with but they grew in rank in the army (as they did the actual fighting) untill eventually they overthrew their weak rulers.

35
In light of abouve comments, do you guys think it would safe to eat raw pork from slankers?

If yes then which cut should i start with (this will be a first)

43 million AMERICANS on food stamps. America is FULL of fish, and plenty of places to fish.

is most of this stamp food money is spent on junk food (corn, canned, cured meat.....).

it could a way to create consumers for junk food (which already is subsidized by tax payers)

Primal Diet / Re: Is high meat more effective than probiotic supplements?
« on: January 11, 2011, 05:53:35 am »
I first cut the high-meat into tiny slivers before even storing it. I would then chase each tiny sliver down with a gulp of alkaline mineral water from a spring. That washed away the taste. It also helped a great deal, psychologically,  that I had consumed a lot of raw, aged cheeses well before I had ever heard of RVAF diets.

Do you recommend i start trying smelly aged cheese's to prepare for it.

I imagine your response is going to vary on a person's dairy tolerance, so bear the following in mind for my case: after eating butter a few more times this last week I got really sick of the taste and didn't want to eat anymore, like a really strong "stop signal." In earlier experiments I ate butter and sour cream for 2 months without any of these reactions. However, when I had tried to drink raw milk (~1 quart a day) in the past, I never really acclimated to it, even after 1.5 months, still getting gas and electrolyte imbalance symptoms.

Raw grassfed butter does the same to me, not having similiar issues with lard, or raw animal fat. I get clear stop signal with animal fat, and satiety too.

Primal Diet / Re: Is high meat more effective than probiotic supplements?
« on: January 10, 2011, 10:20:58 am »
I have tried several brands of probiotics, both dairy and nondairy. None of them did anything noticeable for me. Some had warnings about not taking too many of them at once, which gave me the idea to take a lot, out of frustration. Still zero effect. I did one final test by searching the Internet to find the brand that was supposed to be the best, per a study and testimonials. I took the prescribed amount for several days, again without effect, and then took the entire rest of the bottle at once. Still zero effect. So, unsuprisingly, I'm skeptical of probiotics, which have been ineffective and expensive for me. (And it's not that I don't believe some supplements can help some people--minerals have worked wonders for me re: toe cramps, acne and leukonychia, and minerals tend to be relatively cheap).

On the other hand, high meat hasn't had any noticeable effect either, though I haven't taken nearly as much at once.

which probiotics did you try? Did u try VSL#3?

Yesterday me and my friends we had lamb leg cooked of course I didn't even want to mention them that I wana try it raw they would think I'm psycho.

Dont eat too much almond or at least dont do it often.

Carnivorous / Zero Carb Approach / Re: Help with weak digestion
« on: January 10, 2011, 06:14:10 am »
Eating much more fat seems like a good idea. Do you happen to know which fat is easiest to digest?

I actually counted up the amount of protein I usually eat. It's about 130-150g per day. I'm not a big guy, just 172cm and 62kg. I guess it's too much protein? ???

i found marrow fat easier to digest than backfat - but that could be just me.

I've been drinking 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar diluted with water before meals and there has been some improvement. Does anyone have any experience in using this for indigestion? How much do or did you use while having digestive issues? Any suggestions at all? ???

I would like to solve this issue because it's hard to eat when my stomach feels full for most of the day. I'm not getting enough calories and my weight is going down.

i am trying raw honey, it seems to helping bit with digestion, also reduced my water intake. Previously i used to drink water - even when the body did not ask for it.

I read Dostoevsky, Victor Hugo, Goethe, and countless others. It was a happy time for me. I found reading to be an more engaged kind of meditation which allowed my mind to focus on streams of thought and to cultivate a greater overall awareness and inner peace.

Most of the far out conspiracy stuff I believe in was learned from talking to my old war vets and other street people long before I ever began to troll the internet.

Sabertooth,
since you have read more literature than i have, any recommendation for kids. How to start them on it, my daughter is 8.5yrs old i want to start her on good literature but have no clue (being a science guy). Any ideas on how to start get her started.

Curious about the conspiracy stuff from vets.

Also at some point in my life I plan on purchasing a hunting permit and hopefully bringing home some wild game meat that way. In Kentucky where I live, it is ridiculous the amount of red tape one needs to wade through, just to get a gun and go out into the woods to bring back some dinner for the family. But I'll do it someday.

I dont know much about hunting but why not bow and arrow. Its equally effective, not sure if that too involves red tape.

Well, the sceptics apparently have their own alternative interpretation of that:- they state that the farmer feels good about giving the animal medicine because he believes in homeopathy, so the animal senses this and feels better too due to the placebo effect, without curing anything.

good one, i loved it.

I am on food stamps and I use it mainly to buy my wife and kids food, I have 3 kids and a stay at home wife and make less than 30,000 a year so that qualifies me for 500 dollars a month in food assistance. Every six months I have to show proof of income and get the card renewed. Good food is so expensive and I wouldn't be able to live as well If I didn't have that assistance. There is an Irony about the program which is if I made an extra 500 a month through hard work I would lose my benefits so I am stuck on this reservation with no motivation to better my income. There are many people who are in the same situation. There is no motivation for me to work harder for less money, so I am better off camping out on the boarderline of poverty.

We get some choice Items at the whole foods store and I try to buy some of the cleaner foods the standard grocery stores have to offer. I buy my meats with cash from a restaurant. I am fairly poor and I have to budjet my diet strictly and I have sacrificed many material goods to be able to afford good food for my family. It is well worth not having cable TV , my own  cell Phone, new shoes, curtains, appliances, or a fancy ride, car insurance, etc in order to provide me and my family with good food.

I see wealthy people who have everything , but feed their kids garbage, many of these these kids are surrounded by fancy toys and material goods but they are being made sickly and stupid from bad nutrition and I know that my children are much better off than the majority of children who come from wealthy homes.

I justify my eatting at the governments expense by knowing that If I couldn't afford to feed my family well, then the government would be having to pay for a lifetime of their medical expenses due to the sickness that are cause by poor nutrition. As things are, I never have to take my kids to a government Doctor, except for their yearly check ups in which they are labeled to be perfectly healthy. Do you know how much money I will save the government just by raising healthy kids.

I know many poor families who actually sell their food stamps for drug money and let their kids live on noodles and cereal.

Wow Sabertooth,
you are very wise indeed - it took me a long time to figure this out. I agree with everything you say. But you still should try to read good books - i believe books and nature are the best teachers.

have you tried foraging or growing ur own food?

How can a vegetarian eat eggs? lacto-ovo veg. That's an omnivore to me. Then there are thos ethat just eat fish. Give me a break.

this whole vegetarian/non-veg thing is an artificial abstraction made by humans - it does not exist in nature.
