General Discussion / Re: What does pemmican taste like?
« on: July 04, 2011, 04:49:17 pm »
I find heart and fish taste great.  Although it also depends on the fat you mix it with and I found mixing fats improved the flavor.  So to put it simply, it really depends on the type of pemmican your eating.  I've had stuff that tasted awful before but now learned to make some amazing pemmicans.  To me sometimes they taste like cookies, however when I gave them to friends that don't eat raw paleo, they don't agree, so it really depends on ones taste buds as well.

I get mine ground up so you don't notice the connective tissue you sometimes get.  I then just put it on my meats/organs or mix it with egg yolks.  It's also my favorite fat in terms of how it makes me feel.

Also I felt ridicoulusly horny after eating it. Weird.

I felt like that all of last week and was flirting with girls everywhere I went.  I usually don't eat pork but last week it ended up being pretty much all I ate.

This is one of my favorite movies.  The part that really touched me was the quote he left in his diary before he died: happiness in only real when shared.

Is there a reason citrus fruits and grapefruit are toping the list at being so evil?  -d

Well vegetarians aren't that bright and I'm seeking from experience.  When I was one I didn't think straight and now that I look back on what my life as a vegan, it was basically wasted away: no motivation or drive to accomplish anything like I usually did before and now once again have while not being vegan.

I have to agree with Boomshaker.  While it is true that when using machines all the muscles in the muscles group being worked will fire, the neurons going to those muscles won't adapt to stabilizing that joint as quickly as if one was training without machines.  Also one uses so many more muscles groups when doing free weights or body weight exercises then you would with machines.  Just try doing a one handed and one foot pushup and compare it to a chest press machine.  In the prior one you use your whole body to stabilize your position while working chest, while in the later all you use is your chest muscles.

Well HIT_it_RAW I guess it's obvious then that you haven't studied any bio-mechanics of the body.

If an education in exercise does not increase ones knowledge of how they body functions and reacts, then why is it that kinesiologists and physiotherapists are the ones who work with professional athletes (Olympians, body builders, NHL players...)?  Why don't these top athletes just go to the average Joe trainer then?

As the digestive system is in proximity to the core muscles, any digestive problems may cause tension in these muscles. The problem is usually caused in the lower abdominal muscles as the large intestine is where junk sits and ferments.  In sever cases one will feel cramping but in others it may be unnoticeable to the person.  By looking at her posture in the first row of pictures, it looks as her abdominals are flexed which is causing her back to arch.

;D
If walking/cycling is good for your health, the postman would be immortal
A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water and is fat
A rabbit runs hops and only lives 15 years
A tortoise doesn't run, does nothing  yet lives for 450 years.
And y'all think exercise is important.

This is an interesting point.  Exercise has not been shown to increase ones life expectancy while diet on the other hand has.  In fact some long aerobic exercises done frequently can cause muscle breakdown and in some people (depending on what their body is accustomed to using as fuel once their glycogen stores run out) their bodies can start to catabolize protein for energy, which in some die hard aerobic trainees can lead to a weaker heart muscle.

On the other hand exercise does have numerous benefits that improve ones daily lifestyle and there are so many exercises and/or activities one can do to make it fun as well.

I think I tried wild apples once; found some trees in a park which had small apples on them. They tasted bitter although I'm color blind so even though it was apple season maybe they weren't fully ripe yet  -\

Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Re: Nuts VS Meats
« on: June 11, 2011, 04:38:29 pm »
I prefer meats over nuts as I find them easier on my stomach and more satisfying.  However when I do eat nuts I make sure to soak them for the day in water with a little bit of vinegar added.  Seeds (including nuts) sprout better when the soil is slightly acidic so the vinegar added to the water helps mimic this environment.

I like apples but if I eat one on an empty it will usually make my stomach feel strange and make me feel a bit light headed.  It must be cleansing me (as the raw vegans would say)  :D

My diet is roughly 80% fat and almost all animal fat which is usually fat from the grass fed meats I eat and extra suet.  I drink roughly 6 glasses of water a day too.  I don't feel dehydrated though and when I eat the same meals on days I don't have eggs my nose doesn't feel clogged up.

I've worked in rehabilitation for a long time with some top physiotherapists and we do leg extensions with some patients however only with low weight.  With heavy weights it can cause some wear on the knee joint over time.  It's simple physics: when your foot is not planted to something and in an extended position (parallel to the ground), when a force is then applied downwards it pushes the entire leg down causing a slight shearing at the knee.  Your knee is not a hinge joint, it is held together with tendons and ligaments, thus it will have some motion in various directions.  The leg extension is not a movement that is naturally designed for high weights in our daily lives; things like jumping, running, walking... on the other hand are and these apply compression forces on the knee joint.

Off Topic / Re: To much omega 3?
« on: June 10, 2011, 01:15:34 pm »
When I used to take fermented fish oil I bruised easily.  Most of the time it was from working out by having weights on me but one time I had a girl grab my arm to pull me to her and the day after I had a big bruise, even though she didn't grab me that hard.  I think it all depends on the types of animal products you eat and what the animals eat as this will affect their omega-3 content.  I eat grass fed animals so I think my omega-3 content is high enough without the settlement.

We should have a fat party.  We'll get some drums and have a primitive rave, dancing around a fire like the natives did.

One can get a much better workout without machines.  All you have to do is look at gymnasts, power lifters and crossfiters.  Sticking to compound exercises gives far better results as it stimulates more nerves to fire and more stabilization muscle.  Also some machines are dangerous, such as leg extensions as when one adds heavy weight to an extended food that is not planted to something, it can cause shearing at the knee.

The eggs are from true pasture hens.  I've tried them from numerous farms now and still the same results.  I did notice the symptoms weren't so bad from store bought eggs though so maybe it is a reaction or overdose of some nutrient(s).

They may detoxify the bad stuff but they can also detoxify good minerals from your body as well, so it's important to replenish those.

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Re: is Stretching Paleo/Neccesary?
« on: June 08, 2011, 02:45:44 pm »
Some good points made here.  Stretching should never be done before a workout as it stimulates the para-sympathetic nervous system to fire, causing the body to relax, thus the muscles become weaker and there is a greater chance of injury.  Stretching after a workout has been shown to help blood flow and recovery time though.

With regards to the question if stretching is necessary, well it depends on ones overall posture and what activities one performs.  By sitting most of our days many people have tight muscles and should stretch them.  On the other hand, being to flexible has it's downsides too as we need that tension to hold our joint in place.  Gymnastics who have the muscle to keep their joints in place may not have any issues but others, say yoga fanatics, who do no strength training have and are excessively flexible do have problems.

Thus to answer your question simply, if we lived in a pale world, stretching wouldn't be necessary, but since we don't, it is recommended for most to some degree.

Even better then a bar would be some gymnastic rings.  You can do some extreme workouts with just those.

Other then that I'd recommend a bar and some weights to do squats, deadlifts, cleans, overhead squats, shoulder press...

With just those two things you can get a whole body workout and you'd be maximizing your workouts by doing compound exercises.
