Hot Topics / WA state GMO labeling issues currently at hand.
« on: October 10, 2013, 07:47:10 am »
There has been ongoing debate concerning the law around labeling GMO products. It seems in the organic world they are pressing for GMO, arguing that it would help clarify what is GMO or not in the grocery store. IMO this is a good thing, as I think we can all agree, it's a small step in the right direction.

However, as I watch TV/news/other media, there seems to be STRONG backing against it. For example, the Washington State Farm Bureau is INSISTENT that it will cause more work for farmers. Yet nobody questions what farmers? Wheat and corn and soy farmers for sure!! They have no non-GMO crops! This kind of labeling may finally turn people on to the idea of how much genetically modified foods they are eating. As for fruit farmers, we have little to no GMO in WA state, in fact none IIRC. Maybe Watermelons, but not many come from WA.

Another argument is the law is "incomplete" and there are exceptions to the labeling, dog food made with the same meat source as something thats gmo would be labeled, but the same meat wouldn't be.

http://factsabout522.com/?utm_term=I-522&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Search&utm_campaign=WAI522 is the site against it. It seems like a money driven thing, just curious what you guys know about this sort of political drive.

Exercise / Bodybuilding / My legs never get as sore as the rest of my body
« on: September 29, 2013, 02:36:59 am »
Even if I go to complete failure in the same way as my other muscles doing squats, deadlifts, sprinting, whatever else to the point where I have to sit down for a few minutes to regain my composure, they are never as sore as my back and chest and arms the next day. Why is this?

Is it because I keep walking on them for the rest of the day? Would continuing to lift light weights with my other muscles for the rest of the day continue to grow and strengthen my muscles? I'm not a believer that I need to be dead sore to experience results. I just am curious why they are not all the same.

Side note, I've not yet been as sore as my heavy carb eating days. Going from workout to eating fat and meat does really well to increase results and healing time. A little bit of carbs seems to add some energy back without a BG spike, but that's minimal at about 20g. However I don't think this lack of soreness in my legs has anything to do with that.

Health / My jaw hurts.
« on: September 13, 2013, 01:49:50 am »
I was chewing on a piece of fat last week and out of nowhere my jaw popped and felt like I pulled a muscle. It has been hurting ever since when I try to chew hard things like fat or tendons and when I yawn. It is the part of the jaw that is directly in front of your ear, so upper jaw.

Is this a sign of a potential nutrient deficiency? I've done jaw exercises in the past to strengthen it and get over previous pain. Previously I could move and feel the pain somewhere and then strengthen the muscles that move that way, currently I'm having a harder time finding the right muscles so I've just been doing full range.

Any other thoughts on relieving a pulled/tight/cramped/painful jaw muscle?

Off Topic / Separation of possession: benefits.
« on: September 03, 2013, 12:21:26 pm »
On my way home tonight, I saw a truck on the side of the road. This truck was parked at a cross that was placed on the side of the road for a person who I graduated with who died about a year ago in a crash at that spot. I believe it was Edgar Luna's family that was grieving for his death.

One thing I've been thinking about lately is what possession means. Do I really own this person? Mom is my mom but what else is she to other people? I no longer think a girlfriend would be mine alone, as I think that can be selfish. Then the same could be said from the other end, there must be benefits aside from 'denial of self' that allows one to feel generally more content through the separation of possession.

I thought about a mom and dad losing their son. What if the family was not the only one to lose their son? What if they viewed their while tribe as the parents? What if the whole group of 150 or so people saw Edgar as their son? Would that relieve some of the pain off the two people that he called Mom and Dad? I think so. Did that lessen their relationship overall? Not one bit, they still got to share in his whole life.

This lack of ownership has many benefits and I want us to all name some so we can learn. I personally believe that early humans lived without ownership and possession came about with agriculture. You don't have to agree with me but I still think there are many benefits to lack of ownership. Let's talk about them.

Also, feel free to share negatives: being taking advantage of is one that I can think of.

Being ZC for a while now and using my dad's breathalyzer, I frequently blow anywhere from .02-.10% BAC. I've been searching and cant seem to find anything correlating these numbers with blood ketones. Does anybody have any idea if there is something I haven't found that shows if I blow a .10 (like this morning) it means I'm at 3.0 blood ketones, or something similar?

Also, in terms of risk of getting pulled over, taking a breathalyzer, failing, going to jail, does anybody know how to beat this? Does the blood alcohol read ketones the same way breath alcohol tests read breath acetone (ethyl alcohol)? Or do I have to ask to be given a breathalyzer every 2 hours to prove that my "alcohol content" isn't going down and that my body is producing the false positive?

I'm trying to learn more about how relationships would have worked in paleo times. As I seem to have read non-ownership polygamy, though I don't think those terms do  the lifestyle justice.

I don't expect anyone to write me a book on it. However I have seen book suggestions thrown around and would love some.

Health / treating jaundice?
« on: August 20, 2013, 10:52:34 pm »
My mom has jaundice and in trying to help her heal. She can do raw fruits and veggies but not meat.

I've had her drink lemon juice, a bit of iodine for detox, and eat whatever raw fruits and veggies we have available.

I've tried to get her to avoid nut butters, crackers, grains, cooked poor quality meats like chicken broth or grain fed meat.

What else specifically can we add or avoid to help?

Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / mixing high meat with fermented plant foods?
« on: August 13, 2013, 01:15:28 am »
Does mixing sauerkraut and high meat reduce eithers effectiveness? I have no clue and was thinking about it as I really enjoy my fermented foods but can't always separate them by a few hours.

Health / When to apply heat or cold to an injury?
« on: August 08, 2013, 12:01:33 pm »
I hurt my ankle and essentially bruised and slightly strained it. I've been applying cold for the last 4 days since I feel heat coming off it. I was told by a few acupuncturists that when there is heat, you apply cold, and if there is no heat, but pain, you want to apply heat to get the flow there.

Maybe it's because I haven't taken perfect rest other than the first two days, but I have to keep working and so I limped my way around the following two. The inflammation feels pretty bad and I'm just wondering if the ice is stagnating it. I've soaked for 15-20 min at least 2 times a day since the incident. It is very slightly swollen and a little bit purple in spots. It hurts more than it appears to be bad.

Should I try heat? I read someone post (don't remember) that cold wouldn't have been a paleo option and only stops the body from bringing nutrients and as long as I'm eating right, heat would be a better option, as that increases circulation. Truth?

Off Topic / Puas, AMOGing DLV, and my "macklemore" haircut, i need help
« on: August 08, 2013, 07:24:08 am »
Definitely off topic and more of a personally request but I need help with a decision. To those that understand seduction, I get really tired of being called macklemore when I go out. Its like middle school quality heckling and EVERYWHERE I go I hear "hey did you know you look like macklemore?" Its really stupid and I'm tired of it. I like the haircut so these are the options I see:

1 get over it and just say thanks, even though its never phrased as a compliment.

2 have a funny comeback/joke to follow it

3 cut my hair, which is last resort IMO because it takes a whilke to grow long hair like this.

Off Topic / What are your passions?
« on: July 30, 2013, 09:15:41 am »
What makes you tick? What makes you wake up in the morning excited about your day? I'm sure most of us would say nutrition/health/raw eating so let's just keep that minimal, unless you have an interested perspective on it.

For me:

-Music; particularly complex music, jazz, classical (art music), and metal. Sax, guitar, and drums, in that order. Music is truly something that is so important in my life, no matter how much happens, it always makes me feel better. It is something that, more than any understanding of history, culture, science, or similar belief/experience, has caused me to believe that God exists. Music is transcendent of humanity and it's universal impact is something that makes me feel unbelievably small and insignificant in a good way, and therefore blessed to be a part of. I'm happy that I'm able to make it my profession.

-Teaching; I really enjoy sharing myself and my knowledge with someone else. Gives me a sense of accomplishment and importance. I've always said, if music didn't exist, I'd still be a teacher. I love working with people and the joy I bring from helping others is incomparable.

-Dogs; particularly German Shepherds. I find the breed to be a step above any other breed. The companionship, determination, loyalty, devotion, and pure raw drive of a German Shepherd is life-changing.

-Controversial issues; I tend to develop mini-passions over time about things that are controversial, so I've decided that it is a passion of mine to go against the grain. For example; exercise doesn't need to be spending 4 hours a day at the gym, sleep doesn't need to be 7-8 hours nightly (Polyphasic was fun and the most difficult thing I've ever done), and I'm a Christian that doesn't think a person needs to say they believe in Christ to go to heaven (and not in the way of being a "good person" as many confused Catholic Americans believe). I like to make people get out of their comfort zone when around me.

Share your passions!

Hot Topics / a crash course on fermenting/curing sausage or salami
« on: July 24, 2013, 04:47:01 am »
http://www.meatsandsausages.com/sausage-types/fermented-sausage

it talks about nurturing good bacteria, preventing bad bacteria, humidity levels, ph, dry aging secrets essentially.

it is not high meat. This is for guaranteeing your dry aged meat doesn't go sour. Most of the article promotes raw fermentation, aside from a tid-bit about smoking, which even then is geared towards fermentation rather than cooking.

lots of detail and I may try to dry age my meat in salt and at a certain humidity recommended here, as I love the flavor.

Hot Topics / I'm a non-organic fruit grower's son. Ask me anything.
« on: July 10, 2013, 07:32:13 am »
As was addressed in another thread, I'm happy to let anyone know the insides of how fruit gets poisoned. Haha but seriously, I will do my best to share knowledge of pesticides and anything else.

we grow apples, cherries, and pears. Our farm is located in bridgeport, WA.

As CK asked, soil additives: I know we use ammonium nitrate sulfate, A.N.S. I'm pretty sure nothing else is used for soil. Sometimes we put strychnine in specific holes to kill gophers. I'll ask about other fertilizers to be sure.

Also we have approx. 80 acres. So we aren't empire sized corporate pigs. ;)

Health / Plaque balls in throat
« on: July 09, 2013, 12:57:04 am »
It's tough to describe, but they build up in the pockets of my tonsils. I still have them, but I notice as I cut down carbs, the inflammation in my tonsils shrinks, and the balls are becoming fewer. Possibly a sign of candida die off.

Personal note: this may be something that would redirect me to a future life of carnivory, as they have started to come back stronger after reintroducing carbs.

Per request I'll post pics. It would be a picture of the back of my throat and one of the balls on my finger. The stink is awful too.

Hot Topics / Why do not all desert people wear the same attire?
« on: July 08, 2013, 05:22:37 am »
I'm curious. Arabic nations wear robes with turbans. African nations wear loin cloths and jewelry. It may be religious in nature only, seeing as Islamic nations prefer modesty. But There is also something to protecting from the heat, as South American nations wear full attire as well, for protection from the heat.

Are Africans more adapted to heat protection?

Carnivorous / Zero Carb Approach / Low-carb limbo
« on: July 06, 2013, 07:38:25 am »
http://primalnorth.blogspot.com/p/keto-adaptation-vs-low-carb-limbo.html

I found this very interesting. Do you think we can achieve those ketone blood levels by 'feel'? Perhaps we can because we eat raw, since raw seems to return ones instinct for food? Its a long read but interesting if you know little about ketosis like I did before. Perhaps those that are more freq. ZC can shed light on his flaws?

General Discussion / Cycling ketosis for summer/winter
« on: July 04, 2013, 06:14:59 am »
I noticed today working outside in the 100 degree weather I felt weak and exhausted. Granted i hadn't had any protein for near 48 hours, just 100% fat. But I noticed the same thing yesterday also. I'm guessing im in or near ketosis because my carb intake has been low for the past month and I feel pretty decent. But the heat drains me so fast. Both days, after taking a cold shower, instantly rejuvenated. As long as I remain cold (60-70 degree weather) I do great. Is it possible carbs help offsetting the heat? Which may be why Eskimos ate so much fat and why warner climates have an easier time with plants especially because they are more available.

Journals / Life with a doctor
« on: June 28, 2013, 07:53:32 am »
Okay so I'm not REALLY a doctor, I just play one on the internet. If I were to be a doctor I would likely have my PhD in Orchestral conducting, with some variation, as those things get picky.

I started my nutrition journey after reading The Four Hour Body by Tim Ferris. I had been working out for the past 4 months daily, took my knowledge, gained from friends who were always in shape in school, (work hard, lift hard, eat carbs and LOTS of protein after a workout, etc. basically the stuff that doesn't work) and ran daily, lifted every other day, managed my meals, and only ever got as far as barely being able to see the inside definition of my pecs. Shortly after, I injured my knee and had to rest for a few months, found it difficult to find the motivation to start again, seeing as i barely got any results. Shortly after that, I picked up a book I saw was popular online, and read it cover to cover twice, how Tim supposedly barely slept, ate as much as he wanted, had massive energy, strength, lost 20 lbs. in a month without exercise, and gained 10 lbs of pure muscle in one month without anabolics. The rebel in me listened. I had to defy the odds. I talked with my awesome roommate who had been saying for the past few weeks he wanted to work out with me that I was going to switch to this diet, what he could expect and if he wanted to join and we could split groceries. He was in. We BOTH lost nearly 20 lbs (me 16, him 18) in one month, he continued being more restrictive than me, and went on to lose 25 lbs over the following two months, totaling a little over 40lbs in three months, never exercising, never starving himself. To hell with calorie counting.

I don't mind going against the grain. In fact, I've always enjoyed it a little. Controversy makes things interesting. When I told my immediate family about raw meat and how people are healing diseases left and right, they weren't too surprised (they know me well).

The rest of my family can't even get over that I feed my dogs raw meat, I think I'll hold off on telling them I do the same.

I've been on raw for about 6 weeks. I currently have been off coffee for 5 days. Since starting raw, I haven't "needed" more than 7 mg of Adderall on my worst of days, this is having 4 beers the night before with a nice sugary meal.. somewhat of a cheat/break. Before, I ate any of these following things: fruits(30%), veggies (40%), beans meat eggs   (30%), "healthy" grains were somewhat a part of my diet, but not very frequently (other than beans). Breakfast was usually quickly seared veggies with 3-4 eggs. Lunch was usually a salad with fruit, maybe a bit of meat to be easy to digest or possibly beans like chili or a fried bean dish. Dinner contained meat and grains like quinoa or farroh or rice. I didn't stray from bread for any other reason than it made me fat. No clue it zapped my energy. I would have approx 1 piece of "whole grain" bread per day.

That diet went on since I graduated college. My days since arriving back home were filled with a strong desire to sleep. I literally couldn't keep my eyes open for most of the day. When I could, I was somewhere else, mind racing all directions, tough to focus, impossible to listen to directions. I could simply state it as "hard." Dustin, listen. Sorry, it's hard. Wake up! Okay okay. 2 hours later, still asleep. Seeing as my dad and brother both have ADHD and its genetic, they figured I did too. Adderall sure as hell helped wake me up. I felt... normal. I didn't feel zooted or stimulated. Just normal. I could think. Stay awake. Be clear (kinda) in my head. I don't think its as much I changed, or that the drug changed, but rather that I grew. I realized that the drug induced a sort of euphoric state, where things are slightly better than they are. Music, work, conversation, driving, all most interesting and engaging. Suddenly, even the most bland of idea becomes cool and enticing. But that's not pushing my potential. That's not driving me forward. It causes me to be happy in the status quo. I need to find a way to stop.

For a year and a half I continued my "healthy" diet, seeking the pinnacle of health, always needing more supplements, finding something different to try. Until it hit me when my dad talked about my brother doing the same (finding more supplements, more healthy foods) for his drug recovery, I was seeking in the same way. Aren't we all though? Aren't we just trying to FEEL BETTER?? It really drilled home when I came to this forum and saw the mindset of elimination, rather than addition to diets. Dusty likey. Plant foods are inherently lacking, even though I based my diet around them, and was convinced that's the way our ancestors ate, I always wondered how the eskimos and other cold region people lived. Myself being of swedish/slavic descent has the cold region genes bred into me. I have a deep love of seafood, yet it never clicked, and I kept downing my spinach and beans and green drinks and herbs; "this is the way to be healthy," I thought. "This is what God intended: 'eat from any fruit in the garden,' and 'the lion will lay with the lamb'" But that was pre-flood.

(quick side note: whether or not you believe in the literalness of the bible, it still is a deep and wonderful account of humanity, filtered a little bit through Hebrew culture, and often you will see me make reference to it. I may or may not believe in the literalness of its historical account, but whether it really happened or not, I find no flaw in its philosophy, when filtered correctly with an understanding of Hebrew culture.)

So pre-flood, the world was intended to be a different place. The bible alludes to it being almost tropical-like conditions world wide. There have been scientific claims that long ago there was high oxygen content and more plant life. Well, humans could live on plants then. But post-flood? When the land to the Israelites is literally a desert. What must one do? Write a book (Leviticus) outlining all the new foods one can consume and use for sacrifice and how to do so. Damn its boring to read. But I digress.

God wants us to eat the animals. It's outlined in Leviticus. Also he says all fruits bearing seed and the seed. He said nothing about eating leaves. Bye bye spinach.

So here I am, 6 weeks in. I've had my med free days, and I didn't want to sleep all day. Quite awesome really. I'm also quitting coffee so that has to be taken into account. I am still unsure about going VLC, though I kinda naturally am, seeing as my appetite for meat has always been high. I'm guessing no more than 40-80g carbs per day, moving slightly less daily.

I have difficulty stopping delicious sugar foods that are in the house. Mom got these great seattle chocolates, 70% dark chocolate with coconut bits mixed in... YUM! Plus, grandma makes this AMAZING raspberry jam, I can take it by the spoonful. Those are about the only two I'm working off of. It's tough when they are nearby. I got my own fridge for my meat so I don't have to see it in their fridge as much and think about it, but the plant foods are in that one, which I have some daily.

If I have some time to live on the toilet I'll try GS's VCO detox. Sounds tough though.

I've been attempting Intermittent fasting and failing: our water supply cuts in and out, we are getting a new pump. I get dehydrated and tired and decide in my drunken stupor that sugar would be perfect for me, seeing as eating fats and proteins make me more thirsty. I want to try 48 hours without food. I have at least been able to get to 24 since starting RAW, fat keep me satiated for a long time. Quite different than the 4-6 hours I could go on plant foods before wanting a nap.

Not sure I feel stronger yet. I feel... extremely relaxed. Not tired. Not weaker. Just like I don't need to or want to use energy. I think it's due to eating too frequently. Tyler  says it's good to give your body a rest from digestion and I feel that way, since I become more relaxed after I eat. My sense of well-being has improved slightly. Paradoxically enough, I'm slightly disappointed that it hasn't improved more. But I also look at my eating habits and I haven't yet had more than about 2-3 days straight without a refined sugar. So maybe there is a lot to be thankful for.

However, for the first time in my life, my 6-pack is starting to show. Enough that I cast a shadow on myself finally. It's there. I think I may be in a healing cycle, hence the tiredness. When it passes and I feel better (as I'm sure I will) I may be a little arrogant and show-off.

Frequent foods: beef suet, pork back fat, lamb, I just got a deer roadkill, salmon 3-4 times a week.

My water source is from a natural aqueduct that has about 7.8 ph and high mineral content according to state drinking water standards, though I don't know the actual numbers or minerals.

Feel free to ask about anything. It's the internet, I have no shame here.

General Discussion / Let's discuss magnesium deficiency...
« on: June 28, 2013, 05:58:32 am »
So we could be blind eye and say the frequently occurring Mg deficiency among RPD is due to modern issues concerning lack of knowledge of paleo times, or that paleo man would've lived closer to the water therefore always catching seafood (which is probably fairly true) but we still run into Mg deficiency frequently. In my thirst for knowledge, I've made a recent consideration I haven't seen as an explanation yet and I'd like it to be tested.

Magnesium deficiency is caused by shoes.

Rather, by a lack of touching the soil. We wear shoes and don't touch dirt. Magnesium is absorbed best through the skin. Why could we not at very least make an assumption that our ancestors had little to no issue re Mg deficiency because of living on the dirt always? It's tough to find decent numbers on the subject, especially because soil nutrient content is very localized. Magnesium rich clay holds 50% more water http://www.agtest.com/articles/highmg_soils.pdf I have often dug my feet into the clay pockets by the river. It's quite enjoyable, I don't see why another human wouldn't want to do the same. At least there is a slight indication of its possibility, leaning towards probable.

The only thing I'd see as an issue for this idea is if someone could point out that soil during paleo times was in fact poor in Mg, but that is near impossible, because Mg is water soluble, so if there was a super heavy downpour, even that would affect how deep Mg is moved throughout the soil. Tough to prove, tough to disprove.

This may also lend to the idea for us that a supplemental Mg may not be that bad, for those of us that can't access great seafood frequently.  :'(

Please discuss and let's solve.

Found a young deer on the side of the road, checked it out, still seemed soft and warm with only flies on it, took it.

As you can see it was hit on one side and when I got in there he had a broken femur (?) and lots of coagulated blood with yellow pus surrounding the wound. More on that later.

What is that I'm holding there? Its blue and spongy and didn't smell good. But organs don't smell good to me at first anyways.

Guts out, a bit more dressed.

I have no clue how to get into that dome. Neither did my dogs. I kinda wanted the brain.

All the organs into jars. Excrement organs on left (for dogs, intestines, stomach) and mine on the right (liver, kidney, heart)
You can also see some of the coagulated blood on the broken leg there on the left.

That is just some of the yellow pus, which I assume is infection?, those pieces I cut out and left to the dogs. I would rather not eat infected meat. It seems the deer was hit and lived for quite a while.

A better pic of the messed up leg.

Here in my fridge it shall wait and air age as I have been doing recently and enjoy the flavor, plus it gives me plenty of time to eat.

And of course the organs and more meat. I didn't weight it but I'm assuming its somewhere between 20-30 lbs. Pretty happy about it. Will not freeze, let the bacteria grow!
