Exercise / Bodybuilding / Sand dunes!
« on: March 12, 2014, 04:32:31 pm »
So, inspired by the MovNat video I watched yesterday (in the thread below actually), I traded my usual workout of running on the flat beach near my home to running up and down and around the sand dunes five minutes away. It felt so much more natural to be jumping over small dune and running up and down the steep sand slopes. I was really surprised at how much fun I was having - I usually detest cardio!

I finally feel like I've found a form of exercise that works for me. To be honest, exercise is the wrong word, because it didn't even feel like I was exercising! I actually found myself adapting my movement to suite the environment. It was a really cool moment for me :)

I do have a question for MovNat veterans or people that have exercised regularly on sand dunes. Are there are specific warm up routines or stretches that I should focus on before getting out there? I did notice that certain muscle were overworked when compared to my other workouts...

Here is a sample of MovNat:

I feel like just using this simple video as inspiration is enough to begin.

I'm curious of what recommendations Sully, KD, and Skinny Devil have to offer as you seem to exercise regularly.

This is awesome! I really really want to train like this. After watching that video, I feel like slapping myself for wasting all of those hours in the gym...

My friend got me onto Ido Portal a year ago. Totally transformed the way I train and move. Amazing man.

The first person I thought of was Kody Lundin. He is on a survival show on the Discovery Channel called Duel Survival. He ALWAYS goes barefoot no matter what the terrain or circumstances are (within reason of course). He explains that he has a better connection to the Earth. Just like you said.  :) .

The first person I thought of was Socrates!

You said it yourself.

Do not live in a major city.

Easier said than done :)

I have my doubts that such a stress free existence can be attained these days. Hidden pressures from society take their toll like an invisible enemy, just think about the things out of your control if you live in a major city - air pollution, noise pollution, toxic food and toxic people.

But then there are the things you can control - the feeling of helplessness you get by watching the people you love waste away in front of a flickering death box (I have a very low opinion of TV, haha). I've learned to let people go. Their life, their decisions.

This might sound super defensive, but I've found that you need to stand guard at the gates of your mind. I have hope because I see more and more people waking up and making huge changes in their lives. This forum is a perfect example of that.

Health / Re: Jaw pain?
« on: March 09, 2014, 08:38:23 am »
I had that kind of jaw popping as a teenager, and my dentist tested me by carefully watching how my teeth fit together as I opened and closed my jaw. Instead of seeing my jaw closed in one motion, it hit a "high" spot on a molar, and then "slid" to an accommodating closed position. It was like my jaw was limping in order to close.

The solution was to grind off the "high" spot so I could closed my jaw directly. I have never had a recurrence of that problem again, now it is 50 years later.

That's really interesting because I had spring loaded overbite correctors put in as a teenager. I can't help but think that they have had some sort of effect on my current condition. Might have to go see my dentist.

Thanks for your advice!

Health / Jaw pain?
« on: March 08, 2014, 05:48:07 pm »
I've had chronic jaw pain for quite a while now (over a year at least). I feel this pressure in my jaw joints (the hinge) and the only way to relive it is to 'pop' my jaw - I open my mouth really wide until I the joint literally pops. Think of cracking your knuckles, same concept but with your jaw. It's really annoying, and strangely, it feels much worse when I smoke marijuana.

Any ideas on what it is and what I can do to remedy it?
