i like the suet and jerky log idea. i'm gonna have to try that for sure. i usually just take a bunch of jerky and some dried raw suet or some raw butter or coconut oil for fat.

cool, thanks iguana.

i just walked hiked around today foraging. found some chickweed, wood sorrel, and henbit. the chickweed and wood sorrel were delicious! wood sorrel is really sour and pleasant. also found some turk's cap apples and some rose hips that i ate. found a load of pecans too but am saving them for later. it's amazing how much free food there is even in the winter when you know what to look for

My view of a wonderful future  Utopia would be something like Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World"

interesting... i loved that book but how the hell would that be a desirable future?

Look at how much we achieved in terms of inventions and technologies in the last 150 years, CHK91. Our intelligence is definitely increasing.

sir, you are incorrect. technology does not equal intelligence. can't you see this technology is killing the planet? far from intelligent in my opinion

damn, that horse looks delicious.

i just ate some fatty pastured pork  and bison marrow and then some marinated eggplant a little while after.

i also tried chewing on some licorice root (ala iguana). it was ok at first but then it started tasting pretty foul...

tonight i'll probably eat some seaweed and veggies. or something. not really feeling like eating any more animal stuff today. we'll see

edit: ended up eating half a grapefruit, some blueberries, parsley, and then some pecans later

I saw Avatar on the most massive IMAX in my area. Yeah it was a terribly artless movie with a naive premise, but i'm sure that premise hit home in a positive way to some equally naive people. Some of the scenes did transcended just effects and transported you to somewhere else.

exactly, yeah, it might have been 'cliche' or whatever, but there's no getting around the GREAT parabole. it was just awesome to see such a huge movie attacking industry and western culture

no country for old men... i really liked this, but then i didn't understand the very end  -\

yeah, it's kinda open to your interpretation which is... cool... i'd rather it be more direct though

Any truth to the claim that cured meat causes colon cancer? That alone is a good reason to avoid nitrates.

it's a good point. im not sure where the nitrates that are used in cured meats originate, but nitrates are prevalent in lots of vegetables, so it seems unlikely. interestingly, celery juice, which is very high in nitrates, is sometimes used to cure artisinal salami in place of the more conventional nitrates. if i had to cure my own salami, i would use celery juice.

right. But I think most of the kind in WF and similar shops have indeed been heated.

very true. pretty much any salami you can buy in a store is no good. you gotta find the artisinal traditional salami craftsmen. they're rare, but i found one. but i don't eat the stuff regularly at all. only once a month or so when it's more convenient than lugging around fresh raw meat. it's definitely not something to eat very often. i see it more as a survival food. a good way to preserve food too.

lunch: bison heart, lamb suet, beef marrow

dinner: beef jerky, lamb suet

snacks after dinner: mizuna, hen of the woods mushroom (maitake), carob powder, banana, celeriac

i had a very physically demanding day so ate a good amount of food today

ps: first time i had celeriac. coincidentally, i saw that miles and yuli also had some recently. miles, it does taste a lot like mushrooms actually. good call. i like it

Raw means unprocessed.

i understand what you're saying, but to me, raw means unheated. so, to me, ceviche, traditional salami, jerky, etc are raw. and i've noticed i do MUCH better with those foods than cooked meats. which is all that really matters to me.

No, salami is definitely not raw as it is cured. It is also filled with very large amounts of unhealthy preservatives.

well it IS raw. but it's processed. i work for a guy who makes artisinal salami and it's never heated above 85 degrees F.

Meat cut straight from a freshly dead animal while its still warm is not as magic as you would believe, it takes around 3 days for it to begin getting some taste and softening up.  It is nowhere near as good as meat that has been hung up to age for 3+ weeks.

i agree with this. i had super fresh meat in southeast asia (slaughtered that morning) and it never really tasted like anything. i prefer the meat i get here by far because it's aged and tasty. i would think the fresh organs would be good though. haven't gotten any super fresh ones though

i've had cow eye before. the trick is to just puncture the eye without letting everything shoot out and then sucking the contents out. it's salty and yes, there is like a hard gelatinous thing in there (spherical i think). not sure what it is exactly but i ate it. i didn't eat the eye 'pouch', just sucked out the juices

Hot Topics / Re: Anyone eating a strict raw food diet?
« on: December 16, 2010, 02:30:00 am »
Is there anyone in this forum eating a 100% raw diet without much cheating?

yes for about two and a half years. very little 'cheating'. maybe a handful of times a year just due to social situations. and it's weird, i don't really think eating a little cooked meat every once in a while is terrible, i just don't really see the point. why would i cook it if i could eat it raw and it tasted great? that's mainly why i stay 'strict', it just doesn't appeal to me. but i do notice cooked meat's detrimental effects when i eat them. i just eat cooked when i have no other choice.

edit: still hungry so ate 4 small apples, a handful of cilantro, some kombu seaweed (first time, it's delicious! unexpectedly sweet tasting), some honey, and a handful of pecans. in that order. waited a while before the pecans.

beef chuck roast, lamb liver, bison heart, and hog back fat

it varies but mostly twice a day. first around noon, then around 7 or 8 at night. but like i said, it changes up a lot. that's just what happens most of the time i guess

Eat the liver for sure. Don't think twice it's all right.

really? i've heard a lot about this hantavirus. sounds pretty shitty. not something i want really. does freezing 'kill' viruses? anyone know?

Me want pics!

ha, i'll try and do that. the carcass looks awesome actually. really clean. im proud of myself. first skinned animal well done

Or I'd skin and gut the mouse, put some seasalt over it and hang it to dry then eat it

i was thinking about this too. it's so weird though, i skinned him so he (most definitely a he) pretty much looks like a tiny skinned rabbit but the skin immediately around the whiskers (and the whiskers themselves) didn't pull off with the rest of the skin. so it's this carcass with whiskers, ha. looks kinda cool actually.
