The best way of making "fresh" raw meat edible is to dry it thoroughly. Forget about germs.
Whatever it is that makes for unpleasant reactions (very complicated - environmental medicine) has been shown to be removed by making it into jerky or pemmican.

Another way is high meat, where bacteria thoroughly "process" the meat into an edible form for the bold and brave. I haven't tried it yet.

Yes.. that's what I was thinking!  [drying], I spose when it's dry the bacteria's got nothing left to live on [needs moisture], I'm going to have to hit somebodys post about a homemade dehydrator again

yeah yeah, I know, but see, I'm an experimental individual, so I would like to try sterilization to see if there's a difference in feeling when eating the food.

When I eat raw fish there's a definite bacterial problem. Slight, but definite.  The health benefits are always worth it in the long term, but, again, I'm experimental. And at the moment I'm not on an all raw animal product diet, so there's also the factor of being adapted to the bacteria that I'd take into consideration. Not from a 'fear' perspective but from a "I am not eating this every day and if I did I would have to wait to see how long it would take my body to get used to it, if it would at all and if my body would be able to get along with it" kinda deal.

The bacteria is only a slight issue at the time but I'd like to experiment and see what would happen if i ate that same raw product after some sterilization technique.

Heeey good folks!
So I've been thinking about something for a while now, but haven't tried it yet.  [except for squeezing lemon onto raw fish..]

First of all I need to make it clear that I don't have a bacteria / parasite paranoia, because I've eaten a lot of raw animal foods without any major serious problems. I understand problems are possible but the most serious I've ever experienced was perhaps an acute bacterial infection, which was not confirmed as being bacterial, and a couple yrs ago a bad parasite overload which I only got from eating a specific food.

Anyway, reason I'm posting today is that I'm wondering if any of you know of , or have innovated methods of sterilizing your raw meat foods. I believe some food is salted to sterilize it but I'm thinking of other methods cause I dont want to eat a lot of salt.

Reason I'd like to try this is because I do get some bad feelings / physical symptoms from eating some raw animal foods and would like to see what would happen if I actually sterilized the food. That way I wouldn't become bacteria-sick but would still get all the nutrients I want from the food.

I know maybe some of you don't agree with the idea of blending because it's not 'paleo' or whatever,  but I've been considering blending a few of my favorite top quality raw animal foods into a mixture, and mixing it with something that would sterilize it. I know lemon juice is anti-bacterial. I'm wondering if you's know of any specific foods or food grade products that I could mix with or soak  raw animal food that either would, generally sterilize it , but more importantly  aim towards specific types of bacteria IE food X has Z bacteria and Y food is proven to kill that bacteria.

Haha maybe I'm going on a wild goose chase here but hopefully something interesting will come up.

Hey ,
alright guys so. I'm wondering WHERE you get or buy your natural food.
I've been having a bit of trouble with this.
Luckily, I recently found a mennonite shop in Whitby [one of my hometowns] that sells grass fed organic beef.

Where are the best places to buy raw animal products of high quality? List them here. Country> City> location [street name if possible].

Hopefully someone on this forum is from Ontario. Right now I'm living in Peterborough Ontario and I have no clue where to buy high quality food. I'm next to a no-frills and a price chopper and don't know any specialty shops around here, in fact I'm not sure they exist.. though there are farms and farmer's market...

General Discussion / Re: Raw eggs: whites and yolks.
« on: November 01, 2009, 01:29:20 pm »
Here's an article stating that fertilized eggs have less avidin:-

http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/171406.htm

I presume that as the egg becomes a chick, the egg-components simply change into other substances.

Thanks. Yeah I figured that maybe the yolk would be 'using up' the whites at that point and there would be a slight progression towards the yolk being heavier? I'm talkin shit. Anyway, great link!!

The problem is not so much the egg-white but the fact that raw eggs generally come, unfertilised, unlike what would happen in the wild. Fertilised raw eggs have much lower levels of the antinutrient, avidin.

Would you happen to be able to pull up any links or recommend a reading on this?  Why is it that a fertilized egg has less avidin?

Suuuuper high in amino acids, b12, and I'm especially fond of them for their high omega3 content.

Question: anyone know where to get these raw? I get them in a tin with spring water , but I'm not sure if they're actually raw..

General Discussion / Raw eggs: whites and yolks.
« on: August 01, 2009, 05:51:13 am »
I just wanted to leave a quick comment on here about raw eggs. I've eaten a lot of raw eggs during certain periods. I've also read about egg white protein being barely digestible, as well as the whites containing anti nutrients such as avidin, and more if I'm not mistaken. It's also likely that a lot of people may be allergic to the whites.

I won't say what's right for you but when I've eaten eggs with the whites, my body never gave any sign of digesting them, in fact they would pretty much almost fall out of my bum at any given moment. I also found that the whites kind of made me feel sick.

But then I started eating only the yolks alone, and I find that I feel a lot better doing that. So if you're having problems with raw eggs, maybe the yolks alone will work for you too.

I'd like anyone's opinion , knowledge or experience with whites and yolks.

Thanks Kyle. I think I will. I am also very hopeful.

Tyler, I picked up a grocery load on Friday to feed me for about 4 days. I picked up [all beef] shoulder steaks, liver, and marrow bones. I decided that for those "impulsive eating" moments I should pick up fruits and vegetables [and I just likem anyway], so I bought oranges, limes, plums, raspberries, avacados and tomatoes.
I just want to let you guys know that I did grow up eating the crappiest food, and over the past few years doing a lot of dietary transitioning I have learned to eat only healthy foods and it has become a lot easier for me. There are  times when I just relapse for some reason or another. My mind is incredibly scatty and I lose track of things and sometimes it's like I can't manage 'how' to do what I need to do. But once I slip into the habit that gets around it, that fits with what I'm wanting to do, it's a lot easier.

I think a lot of my problems with feeling really crappy has something to do with my body switching over from sugar/carbs. I do not know much scientifically but I have had vegetarian and fruitarian stints that went on for quite a while and I don't think I had anything to really transport these sugars from my body [nor really a way for my body to USE them!], so what happens to them? I've mostly urinated clear before, especially if I eat a lot of fruit/sugar, and when I started eating raw fats I urinate yellow instead. Also, I know at some point in the past my experience with sugars changed.. the usual highs and lows associated with them just went to a whole different level. It's like someone who uses drugs so much that the high and low isn't really there anymore on the same level but the drug is still needed. Know what I mean? When I started eating fats again it's like those sugar highs and lows became more noticable like they were before everything went out of wack on such a high level.

I ran out of most of my fruit and vegetables now and I think it will do me good to wean off the fruit for now, lessen the intake. For some reason I do think I should continue eating avocados. But yea, I think any eating impulses comes from something happening with my sugar levels, and a sugar addiction. It's a very neurotic feeling and I find that it "flushes out" after the raw fats get a chance to settle in. [The blood returns to my face!]

Does that make sense to you guys, any related experience?

Edit: BTW... out of those foods I buy, the shoulder steak is organic as well as the fruits and veggies. The liver and bone marrow is not organic. I have been contacting some shops in Toronto and did make an order for organics and I hope it'll make a difference. I also know that the place I made an order for the organics with sells organic everything else and they also have grass fed beef which I was glad to hear so I hope to be buying some of that.

For a while now I've been out of commission and wasting away on this diet. In the beginning I experienced an increase in strength and I noticed other improvements like with my vision and certain mental variables [depression and other things going away]. One week I just got really sick, I 've been going through fevers for the past weeks as well as a lot of weakness. Bubbles came up in my joints and my bones have been fucked [for example, something happened with my spine and it is making me feel debilitated while a nerve is getting pinched. I thought it was vitamin a toxicity at first but I doubt it and it might be just a part of the catabolism of detox]. There were periods of increased strength. There was also a period where I finally gained weight that I've been trying to gain and it maintained pretty well- between 125 and 130, which I havent been at in years. Right now I'm only 120 and I've been incredibly weak for the past week. I just cant do anything except lay down and sleep. For some reason I kept trying to stay up but I realized that I should give in and sleep because my body needs to recuperate. A problem came up recently, too, where I've been eating junk food (slushies from the convenience store, I've eaten candies at times, and I ate candy-like breakfast foods today).

I'm thinking that what I need to do is to be able to rest and go through the detox period, and find a circumstance where I can do this, because I don't believe my family will accomodate me for much longer. I need to eat the good foods, like steak, bone marrow and liver, and perhaps some fruit and vegetables...  and then, when I feel a detox in process I need to allow myself to rest and sleep, because I cannot do otherwise. I should also not force myself to eat, instead I should do a bit of fasting during periods where my body is accomodating the new raw animal fats/other nutrients and doing a detox.

Hello. I am wondering if any of you who have been doing the paleo diet for a long while now would be able to tell me about what you experienced transitioning into the diet, or what kinds of detox symptoms you had to go through. I am just looking for some support cause ive been going through a real rough time and i want to be able to look forward and say "it's worth it to get better". .. to be able to relate to what other people have experienced.. thanks..

I actually think I got a parasite a few weeks ago from eating some raw wild salmon that I bought from a grocery store... apparently almost all wild salmon carries parasites?

Anyway, I ate it then later that day I felt very nauseous. My mouth started salivating like CRAZY and I gagged a bit, and felt like I was ABOUT to throw up, but didn't. This repeated itself about once a day at random times for the next few days. It even happened in my sleep and I woke up because of it. I noticed allergies starting to come back as well. I started taking cayenne pepper again (I used to take it for allergies, but stopped needing it), to help with my allergies. It was around this time when I seriously was getting worried about the nausea I was experiencing and began wondering if I had a parasite. I read that cayenne pepper was really good to take to kill off parasites as well, so I was happy about that. From the first time I took the cayenne pepper I stopped getting those nauseous outbreaks!

Cayenne pepper seems to be good for lots of things!

Dude, I totally got parasites when I used to eat a lot of raw wild salmon. I love salmon and I think it's one of the healthiest things, but I do remember that I had such a parasite overload that they were coming out in my Phlegm. I don't know what to think in cases like that, when I want to eat the healthier food! Do you think over time the body would adapt to the parasites, or are their some parasites we should just avoid?

General Discussion / Fat/Prot Ratio in ONE food
« on: August 05, 2008, 09:02:27 am »
HEY! I came up with a cool question while I was eating some beef shoulder chop. I'm wondering if anybody here knows foods with a great fat and protein ratio, as to make eating more convenient (I'm sure there are other ways but I am looking for this way in particular). I want to be able to eat foods that, as one item will fulfill the needs for fat and protein. I'm not looking for a specific percentage ratio, for myself, but I'm wondering if any of you have any experiences or ideas on this and if you could list the ratio for each food if you have any idea.

I'll post if I find anything.

Thanks for posting this, I think it is very useful. I've actually had a huge desire for jerky as of late [real jerky] even though I was never big on jerky in the past. SO I think I'll get down on this sometime soon. is there any way to make jerky in a small oven that can heat at very low temps?

I know that once I added more raw animal fat into my diet (NOT raw dairy though...) that the way my body reacts to sugars in fruit is different. It's like my body actually USES the sugars, instead of me getting diabetes insipidus.

« on: August 02, 2008, 08:46:38 am »
Hello there. My name is Adam. I have been doing dietary experimentation for a couple of years now [also have experience with fasting], and have ended up doing a 'raw paleo' diet. I've been vegetarian as well as fruitarian in the past and I found that these were not effective in terms of health. However, when I started eating the meat and then adding some organ meats, things started to pick up, finally, after years of being nowhere [being in a really shitty state]. Things haven't picked up TOO much; reasons which I'd love to discuss but it may be more appropriate somewhere other than the Welcome forum ;) I've read some posts on here and it's all very interesting. I'll be discussing along with you guys soon :)
