General Discussion / Re: What are you eating right now?
« on: October 02, 2008, 05:59:13 pm »
I had some two week old raw liver last night. It smelled bad (which bothered the GF far more than me) but had a very tangy and sharp taste. It wasn't bad. I'm gonna have the rest for breakfast tomorrow. I was a bit worried though since I haven't aired it out for many days.

This makes me wonder: is there a considerable difference between meat that is aired out regularly and meat that is not? Is it a difference between aerobic and anaerobic fermentation?

I think that Aajonus said that not airing it allowed the "bad" bacteria to multiply at the expense of the "good" bacteria, with the reverse happening to the meat, if aired. In a way, that does make sense as canned (precooked) goods are the most implicated in food-poisoning. Whatever the case, I have never had the same benefits from high-meat, if not aired for weeks.

Tyler, how do you digest 1,5 kg liver in one meal; raw meat still gives me runny stools (jogging and rebounding must just push things threw, what others seem to hold back for days?) so I just can not understand if that amount of liver would not cause trouble!!!!

I have fasted for two days, that may not be a problem if you don't do any/much sport...but both times I felt sick when I started to eat again - sooo sick I had to go to bed!!! I could not do my normal sport and felt  -v but I am underweight any way so that just did not help. The funny thing is; I am not hungry and just eat meat and fat because I like to eat once a day...but am always trying to make it work with out runny stools - those eating cooked meat don't have runny stools because it takes longer to digest and has less water perhaps.

Nicola

Nicola

The 1 meal, remember, can cover up to 4 hours, according to IF doctrine - though, admittedly, I usually take much less time, in this case, I think I took  a couple of hours or so to eat it all. I tend not to do as well, if I eat every single day - I need a few whole days, here and there, for fasting, and I find, anyway, that my appetite goes when I concentrate heavily on some project or other.

I only get runny stools from liver, if I'm constantly eating it all the time in large amounts(a sign that my body's had enough of the liver's nutrients?) It's been some time since I ate the stuff, so my stools are fine. I never have a problem with other meats/organ-meats.

yes, Squall... you are right... there are many religious sects that practise vegetarianism mostly lacto-vegetarianism... prominent among them are the Brahmins...
and of course there are a majority of others who take meat but restricted to only mutton, chicken and fish --- as cow is sacred so beef is no-no item among Hindus and they dont consider pork mostly.

Some vegetarians consider eggs and fish as vegetables (i think Bengalis)

I come from a family that eats the above standard meat types - I have open to all types of meat (ofcourse, my family members forbid me to beef/pork which i dont listen whenever possible -- btw beef is bit allergic to me it seems, it doesnt stay in my stomach for long -- may be as I am allergic to dairy even raw dairy it may so to beef too)

Sarav

It's very unusual to experience any form of allergy towards meat, let alone beef.

I would suggest that you go in for raw glandulars(thyroid/adrenal) either from organic, grassfed farms(the best and cheapest option) or Dr Ron's website:-

http://www.drrons.com/

I had similiar health-problems as you had(irritable bowel, chronic fatigue, and the main reason why I went vegetarian and then Raw Vegan/Fruitarian, prior to going rawpalaeo, was, in hindsight,  because I had adrenal burnout/hypothyroidism and my body increasingly couldn't digest any cooked animal-food at all. Here's some info re this:-

Hey everybody. I won't be around very much for a while because my hardrive is toast. I have to wait for the money to get a new one. I'm using the computer at work but nonbusiness is a no-no so I must be discreet.

That's fine. I had a similiar problem a while back, with my PC fusing completely. I've since made sure to buy surge-protectors so as to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

with its high yeast content, high meat is the carnivore counterpart of wine (or bread or cheese)

methinks

"High-Meat"  doesn't have the same kind of effects as alcohol, though. While alcohol dulls the senses, "high-meat" actually heightens the senses and increases concentration etc, without the toxic effect that alcohol has. And the effect of "high-meat" is really to do with the bacteria in the high-meat, which stimulate the body into increasing the serotonin levels in the brain:-

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/66840.php

Granted, in small amounts alcohol also stimulates serotonin production, but, unlike "high-meat", in excess, alcohol actually reduces serotonin levels, thus increasing depression/lowering mood.

Carnivorous / Zero Carb Approach / Re: Bacteria/zero-carb conundrum
« on: September 28, 2008, 12:42:36 am »
I wasn't personally suggesting that bacteria are only useful as regards digesting carbs. it's just that this is a common claim made by some raw zero-carbers(such as Jeff Wissler/Craig? among others) - they also claim that a zero-carbers's gut would be virtually sterile, in the long-term, due to lack of carbs entering the digestive-system. They usually point to the fact that zero-carbers find digesting carbs increasingly difficult, when they go off the wagon, and sugest that this is due to a lack of the necessary bacteria in the gut. My own view would be that it merely suggests that carb-oriented bacteria are done away with on zero-carb, and that meat-oriented bacteria remain.

I just wanted those on raw, zero-carb who subscribe to the above theory to give a more detailed explanation of it. Certainly, the fact that the Inuit go in for high-meat in such large quantities, indicates that the claim is wrong.

Carnivorous / Zero Carb Approach / Bacteria/zero-carb conundrum
« on: September 27, 2008, 05:39:11 pm »
On our sister-forum, rawpaleodiet, I read a post which reminded me of something. Raw zero-carbers always seem to claim that the gut loses all its bacteria once you go zero-carb as the bacteria are only needed to digest carbs. However, why then do the Inuit and other zero-carber tribes always go in for large amounts of bacteria-rich aged, raw meats(ie "high-meat","high fish" etc.). The fact that they eat such aged raw meat often is an indication that they do actually need the bacteria, after all. Any comments from zero-carbers, here?

General Discussion / Re: Hunting
« on: September 26, 2008, 05:17:42 pm »
Yes. It just seems appropriate to include actual hunting in a lifestyle that uses paleolithic wisdom.

I understand, though, that many folks don't share the same opportunities re hunting like those in the UK and Australia due to despicable gun laws. I really feel for you. I just hope the same doesn't happen here in the States. That's for another topic.

Yes, it's now so difficult to get handguns that the British Olympic shooting team has to travel to Switzerland, apparently, in order to practice - our chances of getting gold in shooting are therefore pretty much nil.

Farmers can still get shotguns, but, unless you're a farmer, or one of those American millionaires who shoot at the big country-estates, you're unlikely to be able to get hold of guns.

Andrew's right, coconut oil, even raw, contains lectins, salicylates and other antinutrients which cause problems for some people. I've also had digestive problems after eating coconut oil(which was 100% raw, cold-pressed etc.)

I've eaten them before, but can't recall the taste.

My garden in Northern Italy has such prickly pears but they generally don't ripen properly. It can't be lack of water, as they're cacti, but I suppose the climate is too cold.

Re antinutrients:- There's no specific link about the antinutrients in vegetable-juices, it's mostly anecdotal from posts on other forums. However, there is plenty of information on the Web about the antinutrients present in raw, solid vegetables(eg:-

http://www.youngerthanyourage.com/13/plants.htm

)

The idea is that juicing solid vegetables breaks down the indigestible cell-walls and thereby makes the nutrients in the solid vegetables more bioavailable, but the antinutrients in the vegetables are also made more accessible that way as well. In addition, juicing allows one to consume far more in the way of vegetable-matter(and far more of the harmful antinutrients within the veg) than would be possible if one just ate raw, solid vegetables, instead - raw vegetables are, mostly, rather bland and tasteless(eg;- raw broccoli/raw kale) and it would not be possible to match the amounts that would, otherwise, be juiced each day, in liquid form. Plus, those who juice routinely add sweeteners such as raw honey, raw cream or raw eggs in order to improve the taste/appetite.

To get round the social conditioning, you could try marinating raw animal food in (raw, organic)freshly-squeezed lemon-juice as happens with ceviche(raw fish). The texture of the resulting raw animal food is, apparently, much like cooked-food.

Primal Diet / Re: Detox from Ground beef?
« on: September 25, 2008, 11:30:37 pm »
I personally found, early on in the diet, that ground/minced meat digested less well than meat in chunks - don't know why, exactly.

There has been a lot of concern among Primal Dieters re the issue of veggie-juices:- for one thing mixing veg and meat together in the same meal is not a good idea re food-combination rules(they require different types of stomach-acid) but also veggie-juice contains antinutrients, so that, if one drinks them too regularly, they tend to cause problems.

Other than issues with raw dairy/coconut-oil and the like(to which I'm allergic), I have had the occasional digestive upset with raw meats - these generally occurred, though, due to mistakes on my part such as eating aged, raw meat which I hadn't left exposed to the air on a regular basis, or eating too much raw meat at one time. I'm not discounting the notion that it's a particular batch which is at fault, though. I take it, it's 100% grassfed?

No idea - if I leave it outside the fridge and it works, then it takes 10 days to 2 weeks or so, for me to get the main benefit re energy/concentration, instead of 3 weeks for fridge high-meat. For some reason, half of my experiments with high-meat left outside fail completely(they just dry up instead of blossoming into a fungoid, putrid mass), and onl c.10% of the high-meat I leave in the fridge fails. I think this has something to do with lack of humidity? No idea, really.

does freezing have any effect on enzymes?

Technically speaking, freezing doesn't kill of bacteria, it just inactivates them. Freezing does damage the structure of enzymes - I think some RPDers have stated that enzymes get completely destroyed if the food is left for as much as 10 weeks in a frozen state - no idea how to corroborate that. The main problem with freezing is that cell-walls get broken by the ice-particles so that nutrients leak out etc.

Is there anything wrong with leaving a sealed container outside of the fridge? I put some heart in a sealed jar to make high yesterday, but left it outside of the fridge.
And does anyone how approx. how long it will take unrefrigerated meats to become high, as opposed to refrigerated?

The problem is that you have to air the sealed container regularly(I find once a day airing to speed up the process). By airing, you dislodge some of the tiny eggs laid by flies around the lid, which then fall into the high-meat mess below, and you then get maggots crawling all over sooner or later. I've managed, by being ultra-careful, to avoid such a thing happening, over a 3-week period, but one always forgets sooner or later.
