Good info from everyone posted.  All the veggies/fruits - carrots, zucchini, yams, apples, prunes ; nuts ; extracted oils - coconut, olive, nut; especially in combination together, and so many times per day are likely the root of the problem.

You would do well to move towards 2 large meals of mostly fatty animal products, with a snack somewhere (perhaps reworked).  After workout, it's best to get one of those big meals in about 30-60 Min's after.  You can still eat some limited pale cabs with your meat, but it should be something like a small tomato, or some bell pepper, basically a cornstarch, non fibrous type of crab.
Be careful about mixing fruit with eggs.  The only fruits I can eat with raw eggs are berries.

Only thing I have to add is a caution about ground beef.  If eaten day after day, in 2-3 weeks my digestive system clogs up, but also somehow have diarrhea.  I went in cycles of good/bad for months before I figured that ground beef was the culprit.  But I have eaten fatty steak and ribs for months now with no problems at all, so I mostly avoid ground beef.  But I'm like Yon, I can eat and enjoy a steak with nothing else, can't say the same for ground.

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Re: Need to bulk!
« on: May 26, 2009, 01:32:17 am »
As far as meal plans go, here's some ideas:

Breakfast:  Eggs/berries.
Lunch:  Short ribs, ribeye, ny strip (all pretty fatty), with some tomato and avocado
Dinner:  Ribeye steak with peppers, onions, and garlic.
Snacks:  a small handful of nuts, berries, perhaps a small piece of fruit, an egg or two, some guacamole (some people don't digest avocado well tho).

This really ended up being a transition diet for me.  You may ultimately find that you only need 2 meals a day.

I eat a pound of beef anywhere between 930AM-1PM depending on when I get hungry, and 1.5 lb after I work out in the evening between 7 and 9 PM.  Occasionally I get just a small snack.

Hey Shelby,

I started RP too with the desire to put on some muscle.  I've always been a thin and a relatively hard gainer.  After I finally got my diet sorted out, I am as trim and stong as I've ever been.

Muscle building requires protein, fat, and nutrients (among other factors - get to that later).  You simply cannot get enough of all of these while on a vegan or vegitarian diet to satisfy long lasting growth.  The best thing you can do is eat fatty red meat, and lots of it.  You will get plenty of protein, fat, B vitamins (which are difficult to get on vegan diet), and allow your body to absorb fat soluable vitamins (A,D,E,K).  Having been a former vegan, you should definitely consider eating a few ounces of liver at least once a week as well.  It contains massive amounts of A and B vitamins, and it's very likely that your own stores of these vitamins are depleted.  The eggs you are eating can be a good supplementation, but shouldn't be the the mainstay of your animal food intake.  Also, I'd guess you probably eat plenty of nuts.  A small handful once or twice a day is okay, but any more than that is really not helping you much, better to get your calories from animal sources, as they are generally easier to digest and rich in nutrients.

If you want to eat plenty of red meat and fat without putting on excess amts of fat, you will need to limit your carbs.  Of course, paleo eating means no grains, rice, pasta, oats, bread, potatoes, etc, so that makes it a bit simpler right away.  I would stick mostly to berries, and 1 piece of fruit a day.  You can also eat your red meat with some non-starchy fruit/veg like bell pepper, avocado, onions, tomatoes, etc, just don't go overboard.  Ultimately, the goal is to work your carbs down to 30-60g per day, so that your body switches from carb burning to fat burning metabolism - known as ketosis.  This can take a few days to a few weeks, and it's probably best to move there gradually.  Remember though, if you are not eating plenty of fat on a carb restricting diet you will lose even more weight.  If your interested to learn the basics of insulin response, and why excess carbs are detrimental to health, check out  http://www.biblelife.org/rosedale.htm    The begininning is a bit dry, but after the first couple sections it really starts to explain whats going on metabolically.

Last thing - exercise.  It looks like in your avatar you are running a marathon, or some type of long distance race?  I can tell you, you will never bulk up or get to a healthy weight doing long distance, endurance type sports.  They automatically put your body into a prolonged catabolic state which consumes your tissues to provide energy.  If you really want to bulk up and put the right type of weight on, you need intensity.  Short bursts of strength over a 20-60 min period, followed by a good meal.  What this means is you can either do very fast sudden movements with lighter weights (sprints for example) or heavy weights with slower controlled movements.  www.crossfit.org has TONS of great exercises for overall health without much weight.  Also, it looks like you're a pretty thin girl already, it could take some months, even a couple years maybe, depending on just how much muscle you are trying to gain.  Then again, perhaps a radical shift to an optimal diet will give you a few extra pounds of lean mass in just a few weeks.

Keep us updated on what you decide to do and how you're progressing.

Just a couple weeks ago I took a 1 lb ribeye through security.  I could see the wrinkles in their eyes as it was going through the scanner, so I told em it was a steak, to which they laughed, told me about someone who brought a roast through recently, and I was on my merry.  Then I ate it during my layover.  I've found it's actually pretty easy to get away with it right out in public and here's how/why:

Eat it wrapped up in wax paper like maybe it was a burger.  Stay leaned over w/ elbows on knees, hands dropped, one holding the steak, the other covering the opening.  Most of the time is spent chewing anyways.  People see that your eating, but almost no one actually takes the time (or cares) to examine what you're eating.  It's one of those, you see what you want to see - since eating a raw steak is so far outside the box, it's not anything anyone really would expect to see; and thus, they don't.

And if anyone did and ask me about it, well there's another person who learns for the first time about RPD... lol, or I've just met one of you guys.

Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Re: Talk about avocados

wow, that's a lot of pharmacology!  I have done just a bit of tyramine research as a result of doing MAO inhibitor research.  Mono amine oxidase inhibitors block the actions of various enzymes in the body allowing certain compounds to enter the blood stream unaltered (tyramine being one of them).  In addition this enzyme inhibition increases the level of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin.

Thus, MAOIs are often used as antidepressants.  I don't know names for lab created ones, but herbs like St Johns Wort, Yohimbe, and Syrian Rue are all MAOIs.  And foods containing tyramine should not be consumed for a couple hours after taking these (time will vary with dose and strength of MAOI).

Unless consuming one of these MAOIs, you should generally be okay to handle moderate amts of tyramine; and I'm sure everyone has varying sensitivity to it - it does seem to be a vasoconstrictor.  Avocados don't seem to give anyone major problems, but for some seem to be not entirely ideal.  I would hesitate to lay the finger of blame on tyramine just yet, maybe just a finger of blame.

I have also noticed a somewhat reduced taste for raw fat as it's started warming up.  And I've had to start drinking coconut water again, regular water just doesn't satisfy me completely - that and the electrolyte replenishment I think is a good think (particularly in the desert).  From what I've read tho, carbs burn 'hotter' than fats - more heat is released in the chemical reaction than with fats, which might be why Aajonus says they will keep you cooler in the summer.  But then again paleo carbs generally come with water, which always seems to absorb and satisfy my thirst better than water.

Of course some would ask, why not burn carbs in the winter then?  But to do that would require a constant intake of them for burning, which would have your insulin / glucagon response varying considerably (and is not realistic or practical anyways).  Fats can supply a steady state long lasting heat, even if you haven't eaten in awhile.

dude, why not go buy a steak and just lightly cook the outside (if your worried about getting sick).  Eat with some of those mushrooms and onions.  That way your still eating mostly raw.  I know it may not be grassfed, but even grainfed raw (or very rare), is still MUCH better than cooked, or eating twinkies.  When I travel I'm generally forced to eat this way.  Glad to hear the cooked paleo helped you feel better.

I do the same for guitar.  I didn't really pay much attention, but I did notice a month ago that the nails on my right hand seemed stronger than a year or two ago.  But it's hard to say since I didn't 'measure' their strength or anything.

I have had probs w/ avocado in the past (after I started the diet), but I seem to do okay now.  I think part of the prob was I ate 1-2 every day when I first started, now I eat 1/2 - 1 every other day.  I can't eat raw carrots or broccoli, they make my stomach hurt.  If I do eat them, it is steamed and b/c I'm at a restaurant ordering the rarest steak they'll give me.

Tyler, how did you like the ACV soaked lettuce?  How did it work for you?  I used to make some great tasting salads w/ lettuce, spinach, tomato, bell pepper, jalapenos, onions, garlic, ginger, and a honey/ACV mixture for dressing.  I toss in tupperware and let soak for a bit in the fridge.  Haven't done that in a long time now.  Tasted great, but I always end up eating too much and get a sore stomach.

I'm on raw omnivore: fruits, some vegs, animal foods

* Eating rice + cooked meat takes uncomfortably too long to digest and just sits in my stomach up to my esophagus.

I often notice this same effect when I really cheat bad.  It's like my body doesn't even want to let the food reach my stomach, so I get this full, almost acidic feeling in the bottom of my throat.

General Discussion / Re: how do you feel when/after you "cheat"?
« on: May 19, 2009, 05:54:35 am »
Let's see, how do I feel when/after I cheat?  Well, at first, while I'm eating, I feel great.  It's like drugs really... no actually I'm fairly convinced it is drugs - based on the reaction of the body and mind.  But pretty soon in to the meal I start to feel thirsty.  Very thirsty.  In a humid environment I drink less than 8 oz a day on RP, but I'll chug down a full 16oz in one cooked meal.

Dairy doesn't bother me so much, unless it's straight cows milk, in which case I get pretty congested.
Grains are actually not that bad, in small amts.  I don't really have any probs unless it's a plate full of spaghetti (which is excessive)
Sweet fruit/high carb is no problem really, except for they can get the bowels a little loose in excess amts.
Cooked (that is fully cooked) meat is no good.  For a full day afterwards I have 2-3 bowel movements, and w/ poor consistency and smell.

Last bit:  I know from a biochemical standpoint there is no need to consume carbs.  I know our bodies can manufacture all we need, but when I try to go prolonged zero carb, it doesn't work.  It's one of those, who am I going to believe, you or my lying eyes?  I know it's not a matter of keto adaption as I am FULLY keto adapted at less than 30g, usually less than 15g every day (for a good 4 months now).  But if I drop to zero and keep it that way, I start getting symptoms similar to Tyler (not quite so bad tho).  Not only that, the first time I tried it I DEVELOPED CAVITIES for the first time ever in my life.  Immediately after I added some carbs back in, I felt better, breath smelled better, and the caries began to shrink (just 1 tiny dot on 1 tooth now).  But for some people it works great.

Satya, you are experimenting with zero carb right now correct?  How long how you gone w/o ANY carbs?  How is it working out for you?

Also, random question, what animal sources contain potassium?  I was just thinking about that today.

It's been 4 days since my last transgression.  Tonight I ate raw oysters, good, also had a mostly raw/rare ribeye steak.  But they still hit the outside for 20 seconds or so.  I'm travelling w/ coworkers (peer pressure), so I'll refrain from any further confessions until I'm done, maybe just give an after-action report.

All those carbs by your type O buddy is probably harmful in the long run, despite the bragging.  I would venture to say that the ideal diet for all humans consists of low carb meat eating regardless of blood type - I wasn't saying more carbs for A B (or potentially just grains, potatoes, beans, etc) was more ideal for them, just maybe less harmful. Again tho, this is probably mostly non sequitur as A B blood types are recent developments.

I also got some liver which is a bit more challenging! When I eat it there's something about it that's really good - I can see why it is a prized delicacy. However, it does have a dark musky taste as well which is gonna take a bit of getting used to.

I have the exact same experience with liver.  Like there's an instinctual desire to eat more, even though it just tastes so strong.  One thing you can try is what Kyle said, to keep some berries and honey around, eat them as small snacks.  When I first started I liked to eat them with coconut oil, though I don't eat coconut oil anymore.

If you're looking for fat, maybe try avocado with steak, or ribs and ribeyes.  I know they're a bit expenisve tho.  A less expensive option is to eat some nuts (tho they're probably not ideal in any more than small amts) - almonds, pecans, walnuts, pumpkin seeds are high in fat, low in carbs.  Also, you can try eating bell peppers and tomatoes with your beef.  Or sometimes I'll eat a lemon or a lime randomly during the day if I'm feeling it.

I find that I can't do 0 carbs either, whether I've gone cold turkey or tried a gradual shift.  I don't even need carbs every day, but I do need them occasionally.  I would be willing to bet if you ate just a some bell peppers/tomatoes or avocado with your beef, and maybe a few berries every day, you could keep your carb cravings at bay without any loss of energy.

In Lord of the Rings, Gollum catches a fish and eats it raw.

In the opening scene of Apocolypto, they hunt down a hog and divy up the organs eating them raw on the spot, including the balls... altho that was just a prank.

Also, in the Temple of Doom, does the "KAHH LIH MAHH!" dude eat the heart?

Enzymes start to be destroyed above 98-100 degrees F (36-38 C) if your talking about honey.  Meat is just a little higher than that, about 105, and all are lost by 115. (40-46C)

I sometimes toss stuff in the oven at 170 straight from the fridge (low as it will go).  Depending on the thickness, can take 10-20 mins to warm to body temp.  You don't have to worry about it "cooking", as the cool inside will keep all but a thin outer layer from the higher temps.

But if you heat meat too slowly and for too long, it tends to dry out.  Also, it's easy to lose track of time, I've accidentally cooked stuff before.

I understand the omega 6:3 ratio is poor for grainfed.  Is that b/c grained cows overproduce omega 6, or underproduce omega 3?  or both?

I'm in GA right now where the humidity is like 90%.  I drank 8 ounces yesterday and even less today.   2 weeks ago I was in Las Vegas drinking at least 1 liter sometimes 2 every day.  I dont like drinking that much water, but I gotta.  Adding a little salt helps quench thirst a little better for me.

Update:

After about a week or so of pretty much no carbs, my breath started to smell again, so I gave it up.  Don't get me wrong tho, I'm still at less than 30-40 grams every day.  I gained pretty quickly on zero carb, but then after a few days it kind of leveled out.

So I finally did a carb loading phase.  I didn't mean to exactly, but the results were very good.  I got in a decent workout, nothing with any big weights, just pullups, incline pushups, twirling a metal pipe (alot), and some basic dumbell exercises.  I ate 3/4 pound steak soon after.  Then went out for Mexican a few hours later.  I had sauted veggies with ribeye, 1/2 a tortilla (homemade!), and a couple beers.  Now usually when I drink after a workout I lose size, but I gained overnight.  Yes some of this was fat, but a good portion was also muscle.

But then I blew it all by drinking again the next night, and not really sticking to my diet and not getting much sleep the next few days (I was back home w/ family, friends).  I think I 1/2 took myself out of keto adaption.  Nonetheless, I'm pretty excited to get back on my diet and do a more controlled periodic carb up.  I think I'll follow the carb up with a few 0 carb days.

Altho it's gonna be tough, I'm travelling off and on for the next 6 weeks.

A, B, and AB blood types are neolithic, recent developments in our evolution, and you should be banned from the forum.

No just kidding.  But seriously tho, A came about 20kya, B was 10kya, and AB 1500ya, all suspected results of farming and modern diet.

I wouldn't be suprised if this held some water regarding cooked eaters (prob not so much raw), as I do know blood types influence the type of antibodies we have.  Those that eat cooked food have to produce a MUCH larger amt of antibodies to deal with its toxic effects.

Since this mutation occurred probably b/c of farming, then perhaps those A, B, AB types can tolerate a few more carbs than type O.  And since farming is in their past, I would suspect at least a couple other mutations to make plant materials more useful and less harmful.

My guess is the difference between the diet of various blood types for RPers (if any) is very minor - 20k years isn't that long.

I love fat.  I love bone marrow, ribs, ribeye, etc.  But I ordered 10 lb of suet from slankers and I've eaten like 3oz.  Don't know, I just hate the taste, despite how much I love other fat.
