General Discussion / Re: wild game

King Salmon, how appropriate that we discuss salmon. I was merely talking about the taste of the farm raised salmon which with a little lemon and salt is amazing. I realize its not nutritionally equivalent to the ocean caught variety. I can't even remember having ocean caught salmon - perhaps it tastes better? Grass-fed meats do taste much better raw than grain-fed.

As for the addition of seafood to the diet - I've read some papers (maybe it was just one) where stable isotope analysis of paleo bones show that the percentage of seafood in the diet varied by how close the tribe was to water. Some bones showed a very high percentage of seafood while others showed almost nothing. I'm not sure whether a diet of say 90% land animals and 10% seafood would be any better than a diet of 100% land animals. In fact, it could easily be worse as we could be more adapted to land animals. This is not to rule out seafoods - they can supply much needed nutrition that is not easily found in the animals we eat today. Fatty acids DHA and AA as well as zinc are found in much greater quantities in seafood.

I'd actually lean towards saying that a proper land-based diet is likely to be superior than a proper land and sea diet. Proper being defined as getting fresh wild game, and eating the entire animal. But since I have not seen one person here achieve this proper diet, seafood can be a nice addition to our diets.

How do we know its dangerous? Who are the ones that got in the most trouble from following its paths?

It surely is far healthier than fruitarianism and veganism and most likely SAD, so what is it dangerous in respect to? In this respect it could be extremely healthy and certainly eventually lead to an even healthier diet once more research is conducted.

I think it is ridiculous though the way it is advocated, especially in someones modern home. Necessarily it must take place outside in the wild, most likely the tropics in a tribal setting with very few tools and no permanent dwellings and so on. The fact that instinctos are glossing over the very basic premise to their own diet and not accepting this fact is depressing and very hard to take them seriously. I do appreciate their arguments as again I always learn something from someone who has a vastly different approach to nutrition or any other science for that matter.

I agree that wild game isn't make or break, especially for someone like me just getting into rpd. I see adding wild game as about the last major change to my diet.  I would like to gradually eat more and more of it as life goes on and perhaps eat nothing but wild game at some point in the future. Becoming a hunter seems to be the best bet to obtain fresh wild game, though I just looked and there are some wild game processing plants and ranches close enough to me that I could possibly be able to get some at least every so often. The thought of just experimenting with a completely different animal that I've never tasted is really appealing as well. Raw lamb tastes better to me than raw beef, so I'm wondering if Elk or antelope are going to taste even better.

You might be confusing me with someone else with the fish/seafood. I don't think there is seafood that I don't like (haven't tried a whole lot though). I especially like raw fatty farm-raised salmon (the bright pink variety....yuuuum). I haven't looked into getting wild ocean-fish or oysters and other mollusks - I don't see them as that big a deal, less than the issue of getting wild game. If I do obtain some good seafood it will be by random chance. I do plan on going fishing in the gulf this summer.

Here is the ranch I found - http://www.brokenarrowranch.com/

Totals almost 1 million acres. The animals are shot and processed in the field in their natural setting, not loaded up and taken to a processing plant, which they say reduces the amount of stress on the animal making for better meat. Though, wouldn't pretty much all the meat we ate be from animals that were extremely stressed..

I've got some questions about wild game vs domesticated.

Anyone want to take a stab at how much better wild game meat is than domesticated meat?

And which domesticated animal would be best to consume? Bison, lamb, beef?

Could a lifetime of eating a VLC diet with predominantly domesticated animals be worse than a  low-fat ornish-type diet?

Yes, it all works together. Diet and Mind. I was making the case that I could most likely overcome a pretty bad diet with a very solid mental approach (and not as easily the other way around), though I'd probably be sick in 30 years. I mean, the only people that I know that care about diet are online. Every single one of my friends seems to overcome their terrible diets and seem at least as happy as me. If it takes me 5 years to get my diet reasonably settled that'll be great.

Mentally, things were accelerating for me in rehab and during the first part of the year (when I was much stricter diet wise - again usually all or nothing for me) but have really fallen off the last couple months when my diet has spun out of control.

One simple reoccurring anecdote (not in the last year or so though) is when I would take amphetamines before going out at night. My mind would very quickly clear, all anxieties taken a back seat and I would notice my body would start functioning better. I would urinate far less frequently when drinking, it was amazing. My anger book tells me that hangovers are far worse for angry people and I would have notoriously bad and depressed hangovers. These never happened even after 10+ drinks with the uppers. I also don't have ADD and have taken and passed those tests with ease. Mainly because I do not tolerate doing poorly on standardized type tests. I do however have horribly bad attention span in real life situations where it counts as my mind is wrapped up in something else and I do not get graded on it.

Its actually very cool to see what kind of things you notice whenever you are not locked into your own thoughts. I surprise myself with these rarely used abilities. Creative thoughts just kind of pop into my head.

There is still that fear of losing myself by becoming present in the world. I have worked so hard to be in my own mind that it is scary thinking about never coming back. All the little superstitions and phobias that I have used to control my emotions from leaking out have been a huge part of my life. Of course, there is little truth to these fears as I feel far better letting go of the anxious thoughts but it remains.

I only eat the yolks. Adding squeezed citrus makes them decent. Adding honey makes it taste pretty good. I also like warm (leave them out at room temperature) yolks better than cold.

Thanks for the agreement and yes re-prioritizing is something that is important for me to do. My sister told me today that she knows I'm constantly in thought and angry. I had a really good day letting out some emotions that had been tangled up inside me with my family - crying can feel so good.

I should also mention that removal of amalgam fillings and liver flushing or parasite cleansing or whatever will not reverse depression or anxiety and are too just long term practices towards good health.

I have been doing quite a good amount of stretching lately and I suppose have been feeling a bit more limber and was feeling pretty good today and decided to run some sprints. I ran several 40 yard dashes and the lowest I was timed was 4.48, timed on approximate first movement. This seems rather fast, so theres a good chance that something wasn't right as timing the start has a huge impact on the time. Regardless I was pleased with my results, especially so being on grass and barefoot. I felt fast, fluid and pain free. I also broad jumped 108" which was pretty good too.

24 eggs daily for 30 years? Sounds like another ridiculous AV claim. Thats around 1600 calories which means he's getting most likely more than half of his calories from eggs. This doesn't sound reasonable.

On that note, I do plan on trying out a diet that generates a similar caloric percentage from egg yolks. I have been eating plenty of yolks plus a dab of honey (which makes a pretty big difference in taste) the last week without problems. Egg yolks are a great source of DHA which is absent from a fish-less, brainless diet.

Got link Tyler?

The link he has is from one young woman who has written a few papers and from my knowledge is the only person on the planet to have "proof" that neaderthals were not carnivorous. In her research, she lasered off some gunk off the back of the teeth of some neanderthals and found traces of grains iirc. This one researcher far from disproves anything since I don't think the research has been repeated by anyone else and we have no idea (and might never know) to what degree these grains were present in the diet. I, for one would like to see much more evidence than this one person, before saying anything like "completely debunked"

Having been trained in plant microfossil analysis, I am particularly interested in examining questions regarding:

Thanks for the responses KD and alpha. I eagerly await the instincto retort to this very obvious and very important fact that the differences in taste and quality of wild fruit changes dramatically over fruit on the kitchen table.

I think wodgina's (I find this name hysterical by the way) campaign for settling demons of the mind as first and foremost is striking multiple chords with me lately. In fact, I'm fairly certain that I could probably handle any reasonable diet as long as long as I had a comprehensive daily plan for dealing with my depression and anxiety. No dietary change has had much of any effect on me and the only thing that has ever really produced results is calming my mind and expressing my emotions.

I get no rush or high from doing this, just peaceful mindfulness. I figured I am young enough that my body can cope with a fairly bad diet as long as my mind exercises are in tune. I think the diet is more of just a very long term insurance plan as many people, probably most don't have many symptoms of disease until over 50. Many people came to this diet after having much, much more difficult health issues than I.

This is not to discount any diet its just that I really need to put more effort into feeling good about myself. I think I was fooled into thinking that a change in diet could have an immediate impact on my health with my first round of low carb. I did get a rush, an unnatural spike in energy that I thought would sustain me the rest of my life, but it turned out to be false. There is no magic pill (in the homeopathic sense), or even perfect diet that will help me (at least not in the short run). A holistic, comprehensive approach to settling the mind does do wonders for me and surely my digestion as well.

And the hard part is actually over. I know what to do to make myself feel better. I was lost for quite some time with some severely bad anxious moments years ago.

I have used coconut oil in the past but its not natural and I don't use anything now. Still no burning and I've been outside a ton the last month.

Also, I wonder if breast cancer in females could be linked to having that specific area of the body completely devoid of sunlight for the entire life. Perhaps areas like the genitals and bottom of the feet evolved to not need sunlight. My jimmy is brown and dark as I am and I don't think its seen sunlight since I was 5. My upper thighs are quite white though. I look a bit like an ice cream sandwich naked.

Can someone explain the difference between eating fruit that was picked several days ago and ripened off the tree vs. fruit picked and eaten immediately from the tree in the area that it was designed to be eaten. I hear there can be quite a difference with respect to taste for fruit that is eaten freshly picked. Papaya's for example generally taste like vomitted mango to me but I've heard first hand accounts that their taste changes within 20 minutes of being picked.

I tend to agree with TD (but not with the idea about pressure), athletes across the board will cheat vigorously if possible, especially in today's markets where the difference in money from one level to the next is enormous. Take professional baseball where minor leaguers make 50k a year and by just being a little better in MLB the minimum is almost 10x this amount and 100x for an above average player. The incentives to cheat are enormous. Baseball players across the board 'cheated' (technically just used performance enhancing drugs) before they adopted any rules against performance enhancing drugs.

Perhaps the thread has run its course where we can all take something from it. I think alphagruis' "falsifies instincto" comes across as too strong as you only need one minor point of contention to technically falsify one's way of eating. To me it seems clear that there is obviously an element of instincts that come into play when deciding what to eat and how often and its not wholly completely simply surviving on what is easiest available. I've seen lions kill other carnivores and leave the meat untouched even though it seems it would be beneficial in some way for the pride to eat the meat (perhaps not, animals usually know what they are doing). GCB also seems to make too strong of statement where he states that our instincts completely fail us ("extremely indistinct") when eating domesticated animals. Perhaps there is a middle ground.

For me, I think the emphasis on eating wild game is now enough to at least make a point in the future to attempt at securing it on a regular basis and I thank this thread for that.

Those look pretty bad for anything athletic (I have no idea as Im not a shoe expert just going on looks) - like your foot would be sliding all over the place and not secure at all to the shoe. Did your brothers blame the injury on the shoes? Might as well get a pair of vibrams if you're going to wear those things.

It seems perhaps that you have an unreasonable fear of what others might think of your way of eating and you are rewarding yourself with your invisibility cloaking. If not, then maybe you could explain why its reasonable. I mean what is the worst thing that can happen to you if your invisibility cloak fails?

Of course now that you've hid your diet so well from everyone you could really surprise the hell out of them which would be great especially if you got in on camera. Are you superstitious when it comes to other things? Did you learn these things from yiayia?

The only unnatural substances, in my opinion, that would give you an edge in oly lifting or powerlifting would be illegal steroids and the such. I see no better form of nutrition for obtaining stronger functioning muscles than what you could get on a raw paleo diet. I do think refined carbohydrates will most likely refill glycogen stores faster than whole fruits, but I don't think this will translate at all to increased muscle.

But maybe we are all wrong, and raw paleo somehow does not allow us to gain muscle beyond a certain limit. I plan on testing this myself and hopefully will be competing in some oly/power lifting in the next couple years if not sooner. I have gotten a bit stronger and am at my all time strongest right now, though I've been cheating immensely with my diet the last couple months, but with a raw meat and fat core.

Yet, what is advised by the “instincto” model? To place at disposal, on the basis of our knowledge of the human food range (thus of the culture), all that is prone to be consumed, so that the instinct (thus nature) can decide under the best possible conditions which are the most suitable stuff to ingest at the moment. It has never been question of letting the sense of smell lead the consumers towards an useful food located miles away, but rather of benefiting from the little smell ability we still have left to recognize the most appropriate food in a given choice. Could Alphagruis have understood my position, this time?

Lovely post, but the problem I have with the above is that these "best possible conditions" are extremely poor and artificial for moderns. Necessarily instinctual eating needs to take place in the wild, or at least with food supplied like it would be in the wild and this is fairly impossible.

174
For foxes, martens and other small carnivores this was known long since. Just remember the tales by Jean de la Fontaine.
Moreover this is routinely teached here in France to hunting license applicants.

One may wonder whether fruits also play a substantial role in the diet of lions or other tropical areas carnivores.

How do we not know whether fruit is a part of the diet of lions? African lions are one of the most researched animals, are they not?

Also, you finally made a grammar mistake. Please do not tell me you did it on purpose, you will ruin my day.

Also, lately I've been trying to feed my dog fruit. He ignores my offering. He does really like ground beef and huge chunks of beef fat and of course bones. But will go after the refined sugars.

Since you are mainly looking for a solid relationship (presumably one), I think your strategy of being as honest as you can be is correct. Some people, including my brother, attempt to tell me to avoid being upfront about my diet to women. I ignore this advice and I thought of an example to illustrate this point while driving to a farm today.

Suppose you have ten women that you are interested in and are available for pursuit of a romantic relationship and you have two options - either to not be as forthcoming as you can be about yourself, which might attract a greater number of women, or use your current strategy which might be off-putting to the vast majority but very appealing for one of them.

Here is some math behind this thinking. So, for the 10 women, going with the other strategy of concealing information you will have a much larger appeal, say each woman has on average a 30%(don't be offended by this number, its just used to illustrate a point) chance that she will want to start a relationship with you. On average, you will have 3 dates. This is similar to what politicians do. They have no need to be honest because they are looking for the broadest scope of appeal. And direct honesty will simply cause them to lose votes, at least thats how they think.

Now your strategy is completely different and to be honest which will lead to you having a 0% chance with 90% of the women and a 100% chance with 10% of them. As you can see, you will have on average about 1 date from the same 10 women above but the chance that this woman is truly for you is going to be much, much higher. With the alternate strategy, you would likely not even have a chance to date this woman (she probably wouldn't be one of the three), but with yours you are almost guaranteed to find her. The assumption that you are only looking for one woman for a long-term relationship is important here. You won't have to waste time dating women that won't be interested in you as well.

I apply this sort of reasoning when it comes to job applications. Most people have advised me to not put professional poker on my resume. Of course, I ignore this advice as I am just looking for one job and don't care how many times I get rejected. The one employer that happens to like the fact that I was a professional poker player will most likely be a great match. This seems like common sense but most people think in terms of getting the most people to like them which is not correct in my opinion.
